Q
Will this run the Polk psw10 subwoofer? If not, guide me towards the right receiver/amp? Thx.
richard  Jan 20, 2018
1 answer
A
Can't say for sure. I have this amp in my wood shop and it's hooked up to some very old bass reflex speakers. It handles them fine and I have no complaints after two years. This unit is bare bones, but that's all I needed. Crutchfield's tech. support is excellent. They can probably help. Best of luck. Cheers.

Q
Will this power 2 75w speakers and 100w subwoofer?
richard  Jan 20, 2018
1 answer
A
It is not made to power a subwoofer. Most home subs these days are self-powered (built-in amplification) and only need the audio signal from the receiver; not the amplification. Hi, sorry for the delayed response, I had to look. No there are no fade and balance controls.
rich  Dec 15, 2017

Yes, there is a balance control. Not exact obvious, requiring a press of the AMP MENU button on the remote, but it works fine. Overall, given the price, this is a very decent stereo receiver; better than I expected.

Q
Can Bose 701 series 1 (1 pair) damage the amp? They are 6 ohm. Ive noticed the volume is set higher to achieve the same level of sound than when I was using 8 ohm spkrs. The sensitivity is better on the Bose, so it should be louder with the Bose having a lower impedance, but, its the opposite.
russell  Oct 04, 2017
1 answer
A
Bose marketed those speakers as working with 8 ohm receivers so we don't expect them to damage this Sony just by connecting them and playing them. However, this Sony does not give those speakers all the power they can handle for their best and loudest sound. Its still possible to cause damage to either the receiver or the speakers if you want more from them than this match can give. If its not meeting your performance goals, I recommend calling an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 for a personal recommendation on one that will My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101

I have a detached garage with no heat, will this receiver be ok in Northeast Ohio winters?
sloan  Sep 13, 2017
2 answers
A
I'm from the north Columbus area and 80% of my electronics are used in an unheated garage, on my golf cart or just straight up outside and I never had any problems and it has reached negative temperatures several times (-12° Fahrenheit the one time).
kerry  Sep 15, 2017
A
I purchased this unit as a gift for my son-in-law but I know that it is being used indoors [contolled HVAC environment]. However, SONY will usually provide the expected operating conditions in its User Manual under "Technical Specifications". If you go to the SONY website and search on the product number, you should be able to download the User Manual [.pdf]. And, since I've had experience with electronic assembly design and manufacture, I'd be more concerned with component failure at high temperatures [above, say, 140 F] for continuous periods in an un-insulated detached garage.

Q
can you connect cd player and turn table ?
paul  Aug 02, 2017
4 answers
A
Yes you can. There is an input labeled for CD on the rear panel. Most turntables these days have a built in preamp, they are easy to connect to the audio inputs on the rear panel as well.
keith  Aug 03, 2017
A
You can connect a CD Player w/o any issues. For a turntable, it depends. If the turntable only has Phono Out then you would need a phono preamp to convert to a line level output - this receiver does not have a Phone input. Some newer turntables like the Audio Technica LP-120 have a selectable build-in preamp so you can hook directly to this receiver - that's the way I have mine hooked up att.

I purchased this stereo receiver in 2015 as a gift for my son-in-law who uses it to provide AM/FM mood music in his family room. I have not heard from him that he has attempted to input a CD player but the tech specs say that he can. I know that he has NOT attempted to input a turntable but the tech specs say that the unit will NOT support one, anyway.

Yes you can connect a CD player or mp3 player with RCA cable's.

Is there a rack mount kit for this receiver?
michaelking1014  Jul 13, 2017

There are no provision on the receiver chassis for mounting it to a rack. It is a standard component width (17") so, it will fit on most standard component/rack shelving.

Q
Will this reciever work on a turntable that has a built in preamp and one that does not have a preamp built in?
ash  Dec 10, 2016
1 answer
A
I purchased this Sony receiver as a gift for my son, so don't have access to the unit myself. He does not have it connected to a turntable, Provided your turntable has rica output jacks it should connect through the SA/CD connector. If your turntable only has USB outputs, it will NOT work as this unit does not have any USB inputs.

Will this work with other Sony components even if a different model #. My receiver power button broke and I still have the Cd , cassette player and tuner and just need to replace the receiver?

I use this in my shop and we have a Sirrius XM satellite receiver hooked up to it and we plug our smart phones into it to listen to music. It has the proper inputs for the other components should it should work fine with yours. Look at the rear picture to see if it has correct type of inputs and enough of them to hook up your components.
scott  Nov 26, 2016

I understand any receiver can be used with any brand/model of standard input, though the connections may need adapting. I gave this Sony receiver away quickly because the bass/sound quality was disappointing. I'd go for another one here or have your power switch fixed as I did...my 1987 receiver is back in action and sounds great.

I'm putting together a simple 2-channel stereo system and want to know if this amp will perform well. I am an audiophile on a budget. Will this amp compete with an amp costing up to $500? I don't need lots of volume, just a nice smooth sound.

Joel, I am using my receiver in a sheltered outdoor patio setting and like you was looking for a simple two channel set-up (seems to be hard to find these days). I like good sound and the system works well for my use. I have not used it indoors and as such cannot compare it to other systems I have owned.
jeffrey r  Apr 05, 2016
A
This amp will serve your needs very well. It has a"a nice smooth sound" and you can adjust your bass and treble very easily. If you want to blast your sound, it can handle it, and at low volume everything is still crisp and clean. I've had mine for 3-4 years and am quite happy with it.
susan  Apr 05, 2016

I am using this amp in my shop and it does an outstanding job. I use the Aux input a lot with my phone's music and the receiver has plenty of power. I would buy again.
mike  Apr 05, 2016
A
We use this unit to drive two sets of outdoor speakers on our patio and pool areas. Sounds great, plenty of power even for outside use. Never had any trouble with it, and I'm not the kindest to my stereo equipment. I like loud. I'd spend that extra money on nice speakers.
joseph  Apr 04, 2016
A
Joel: The amp is smooth and solid. As long as it has enough power for your speakers, it will be fine. It's a SONY. Enjoy.

I would always go for a receiver with pre-amp built in. I have friends who use external ones and experience lots of noise from the electrical supply.
joseph  Apr 04, 2016
A
This model dose not offer a built-in phono pre-amp for connection of a turntable. If your turntable does not feature a built-in pre-amp of it's own, you can use an external one to connect it to any of the available stereo RCA audio inputs on this receiver: http://www.crutchfield.com/g_50500/Phono-Preamps.html?tp=204 I hope that helps! Yes, one of the menu operations on the remote allows you to balance the speakers. I've never used it because factory preset of balanced sperakers works for me. See p 26 of the booklet if you have it, under Using the Setting Menu. It says 1 press AMP MENU button 2 use up/dwn arrows (1 db steps) then press the center target button 3 press return. Hope you can make it work!

dave  Aug 31, 2015

Unfortunately, this receiver doesn't have bluetooth capability, which is required for wireless speaker operation. You can, however, buy a bluetooth adapter, generally for less than $100. Such adapters can have limited range, so may not work for you depending on speaker placement relative to the receiver/adaptor. Hookup and signal pairing of a bluetooth adaptor can be a little tricky, so you might be wise to purchase from an electronics store where a salesperson can walk you through it.
russell a  Aug 30, 2015

Answer is no. Here is a paragraph from the owners manual. A/B Speaker Switching: The STR-DH130 features A & B speaker outputs which allows 4 speaker connection so you can run a pair of speakers in two different rooms of your home. The stereo receiver allows you to select which pair of speakers you wish to play or play back both of them. The A & B speaker outputs are wired in parallel. The stereo amplifier supports 8 to 16-ohm speakers."

Can I connect a MP3 player to the receiver?

Yes you can! There are two ways to do this. You can use a stereo mini-plug cable to connect to the "Portable" input on the back of the Sony STR-DH130, or use a stereo mini-plug adapter cable to stereo RCA jacks to an available input on the back of the receiver. Both ways will work fine. I use both as I have an iPod connected as well as a MP3 player part of the time. Be sure to set volume level high enough to provide a strong input level for amplification.
mark  Jul 23, 2015
A
Yes you can! I use a stereo mini-plug to RCA cable adapter to connect my iPod or MP3 player. Just select an unused RCA stereo input on the back of the Sony STR-DH130 for your connection, and connect the stereo mini-plug to your MP3 player headset connection. Just be certain to turn the volume up high enough on your MP3 player to fully enjoy your player. Then enjoy.

I see nothing in the manual about only using 8-16 ohm speakers. I have 6 ohm speakers, am I not able to use this receiver? What if I connect a sub to the receiver and run my two 6 ohm speakers through the sub's crossover?
amsgator  Jun 09, 2015

A
I have 4 ohm speakers and chatted with Crutchfield about this. The manual for this receiver has a procedure to set it in 4 ohm, 6 ohm or 8 ohm mode. I comes from the factory in 8 ohm mode. During the set up process I set mine in 4 ohm mode. It has no trouble driving my emotiva floor standing towers.
tim  May 27, 2020
A
The minimum recommended impedance for this receiver is 8-ohms. Using a lower ohm rating speaker could result in damage to the receiver. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to quick discuss the features you are looking for and then help you find a receiver that will work with your speakers.

I am not very knowledgeable about matching receivers with speakers. In fact, I blew out my last set of speakers. Is this receiver too strong or not strong enough for two Niles - 6-1/2" 2-Way Outdoor Rock Speaker (Sensitivity = 89dB, Impedance = 8 ohms, Required Amplifier Power = 10-150W, Maximum Power Handling = 200W, Peak Power handling = 400W, Frequency Response = 60Hz - 21kHz, Tweeter Size = 1" , Tweeter Composition = Teteron, Woofer = 6-1/2" polypropylene, Speaker type = 2 way) ???

brett b  Mar 25, 2015
A
The short non technical answer is that this receiver will work perfectly for your application. Some precautionary sidenotes would include saying that just about any receiver can harm just about any set of speakers regardless of power ratings. Yes, matching power output with power handling is ideal but simple over or under powering of speakers will do no harm. It's when the amplifier is asked to do something that it can't, known as "clipping" that harms speakers. For instance, "blowing out your last set of speakers" probably had more to do with trying to work the receiver too hard than a power rating mismatch. If you hear "dirty" sound- distortion, anything not crisp and clear, turn the volume down, adjust bass down, etc... or speaker damage will result again. If distortion is something that happens often, consider adding a subwoofer to take the work load off of the smaller speakers. They were not designed to reproduce low frequencies and struggle to do so. Good luck!

It's possible but not probable. I use mine to power a couple of small Yamaha outdoor speakers and it handles the job nicely.

I guess it depends on the BR speaker you want to use. This unit has RCA inputs and outputs, as well as speaker-level outputs. So if your BT speaker is compatible with RCA, you should

Do the 2 channels of this receiver share the same power amp? I need to hook up a pair of speakers, in another room, that have their own volume control.

Stereo means 2 independent channels so they have to have 2 independent power amps. Look up and get a "padder" volume control for the other room. A "padder" is a combination rheostat that varies volume while keeping impedance to the amp contant.

Yes. I have the second channel running to a sub that has it's own amp. Just adjust the volume on the second channel. Be careful to start at zero on the second amp as the first one acts as a pre-amp. If you can figure out why every time I want to power the amp I have to first unplug it for a few seconds, let me know. Thanks

You will need two units. The two channels share the same volume knob.

How does this receiver hold up when driving 2 sets of 8 ohm speakers at the same time(A+B)? I don't see anything in the manual about limitations for having to only use 16 ohm speakers for that.

It will work fine with 8 ohm speakers, or 16 ohm speakers. Just don't use 4 ohm speakers that are for car audio running on 12volts.

I run 3 pairs of speakers using a splitter and find no problems. They are outdoor speakers surrounding a pool and there is more than enough volume and fidelity to get the neighbors attention. The kids have a volume curfew

Not too bad but does wash out a bit at high volume,we use this as a garage unit

You should have no problem with 2 sets of speakers. I have 3 of these stereos in 3 different shops I have and run 2 sets of speakers on them 10 hours a day without any problem. Since I run them all dave I do have a small fan on top of the stereo to keep it cool.

I'm pretty sure it's possible but correct me if I'm wrong (I am very new to connecting these sorts of technologies), but how can I connect my turntable that has a built-in phono pre-amp to this receiver??? It's a sony ps-lx300usb turntable with an equalizer switch so it can use phono or line inputs. So which input can I use???? Nothing seems to work!

If your table has pre amp built in, you should be able to connect with rca plugs into a regular input such as cd or tv. The signal gets amped by the table before going into the receiver. Low-level would be an rca input if that helps.

I didn't connect to a turn table but what stumped me when hooking it up was the switch that controlled which speakers were on. Example a&b ,a , b or none Good luck.... Hope this helps.

Got speakers rated at 80-watts. Will I regret buying this unit as it is rated at 90-watts?

I have two of these. They're being used with speakers rated at less than 90 watts. Both receivers have done a very good job. As long as the sound is clean (no hisses, pops, etc.) the receiver should perform flawlessly. The number of watts an amp/receiver produces usually isn't the issue; it's the distortion that can be caused by some audio recordings and/or components.

If you're worried that this will overpower your speakers, you have no worries. Receiver power ratings are often inflated by manufacturers. I think you will be fine.

Can you connect a sub woofer to this stereo receiver?
larry  Jul 27, 2014
6 answers
A
Yes, you can -- if the subwoofer has high-level inputs. If the subwoofer has only line-level inputs then you cannot directly connect this unit to the subwoofer; in this case you will need a speaker-to-line level converter. Connect the B speaker outputs to the converter's high-level inputs, and connect the converter's line output to the subwoofer's line inputs.

Sorry to answer late but no, you cannot attach a powered subwoofer to this stereo receiver. It a decent little stereo as long as your speakers do not require very much power. Crutchfield has great front and back pictures of all their receivers. If you look closely at the back there will be a connection label: pre-amp. It is often purple and this is where you would plug in a subwoofer. Hope this helps. Hopefully you got your answer before buying in case you were looking for a receiver with sub pre-amp ability. Also! This might be too much info but stereo receivers often don't have subwoofer attachment because people often attach large speakers to them which have subs built into them. Have a good one! :)

Only if it is a subwoofer that has a built in crossover and accept speaker level inputs. The only outputs on this are for 4 speakers - left and right on both A and B channels.
jonathan  Jul 29, 2014

Since I do not use subwoofers with the Sony STR-DH130, I cannot answer with direct experience. In my opinion, to avoid sound distortion (clipping) and/or power transistor failures a highly efficient and/or self powered subwoofer might work with this amp. Given a choice, I would go with a the highest power amp I could afford as subwoofers need significant amounts of power even at modest listening levels. My "opinion" suggests that this 90 watt amp, while providing remarkably exceptional fidelity at modest volume levels, might be overstressed by subwoofers. Sorry I could not offer you direct experience with your question.

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: We go by the numbers provided by the manufacturer in terms of output and that model is rated at 90 watts per channel at 8 ohms. I hope that helps. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

james  Aug 29, 2014
A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: If you hook up speakers that have a lower impedance than the recommended Ohm rating on the amp, it creates a potential for overheating and ruining the amp. These speakers could be wired in a way that would allow you to use that amp, however you would lose a lot of control for fading and stereo L/R sound, as the speakers would be wired together in series to create a 12 ohm load. This will also drop the power output on the amp significantly. The best case scenario, in order to retain the full fading and controls, would be to jump into an amp that has the stability needed to support that lower impedance. The first one I found was the Onkyo TX-8020. This is a great amp as well, although a little higher in price, it will give you of the same features. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

I bought a cable that has the 3.5 mm headphone jack on one end and the red and white audio cables on the other end. The cable is so inexpensive that I just leave it permanently plugged in to the back and ran out to the top of my entertainment center. I simply plug my iPhone in and change the source.
jonathan  Mar 09, 2014
A
I do not use an iPhone so I cannot answer the question based on direct experience. However, an internet search indicates connecting an iPhone to a stereo amp should not be a problem. A cable with a connector to the iPhone with two standard male phono plugs should be used to connect to the amp. This type of cable is not uncommon and is available commercially. Crutchfield may offer the above cable or direct you to a source. Do not plug the iPhone cable into the "phono" jack on the amp as this input is not designed for iPhone use. The other inputs should be fine. I recommend starting with the the lowest volume (iPhone and Amp) and increasing listening volume on both units alternatively and SLOWLY until a satisfactory volume results so as not to overload your amp and speakers.. Hope the above helps.

David: You can connect a cd player. I don't know anything about wireless headphones, call them. PS, it sounds great.
gerard  Mar 05, 2014

Sure. Five input options. CD will work fine with own power source. Not sure how your wireless headphones and the associated signal receiver are designed to operate. The unit''s headphone jack (/4") is the only other "audio out" option beyond the speaker output plugs (two sets) in the rear. There is no USB port.
lindley  Mar 05, 2014

You certainly can attach a CD player. I think the wireless headphones is a no, but if they connect through a gadget that plugs into the receiver, could be a yes. The receiver itself does not have wireless or bluetooth capability to the best of my knowledge.

Does this system have an option for Mono output? I want to use this to connect an iPod to an individual outdoor speaker.
erin  Jan 02, 2014

A
Hello Erin, most modern receivers do not have mono outputs. The best way to have decent sound out of a single speaker would be to use a dual voice coil speaker in that location. This receiver would work in such an application. That way you are running true stereo signal to a single speaker that is capable of playing both channels.
bryan  Jan 10, 2014
A
It does not, but if thats the only speaker you're using you can wire the 2 red speaker terminals, and the 2 black speaker terminals together for mono operation and send them to the speaker
