Getting started with a home theater system doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. Whether you're looking for a way to enjoy movies and music in your living room, bedroom, basement, or rec room, the Sony STR-DH550 will get you on the right track. Connect stereo or surround speakers to this receiver, along with your cable or satellite box, Blu-ray player, and streaming media device. HDMI connectivity ensures high-definition video and sound, while keeping your setup simple and easy to manage. There are also two subwoofer outputs, so you'll have the option of adding plenty of low-frequency rumble in larger rooms. Before you know it, you'll have a brand new room in your house: the home theater.
With more people using smartphones and tablets for music and movies, it's great to have a receiver that can take advantage of them. The 'DH550 features a front-panel USB port for connecting an iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod®. Plug it in and control it with the receiver's remote, so you can listen to your digital music collection while your device charges. If you're an Android user, connect your compatible device to the MHL port. It's an HDMI input that can take video, photos, and music from portable devices and show them on the big screen and play them through your surround speakers. No more huddling around a smartphone to share a video with friends or family.
Sturdy binding posts make connecting speakers quick and easy, with bare wire or banana plug connectors — a rarity at this price point. Worried about getting evenly balanced surround sound from your speakers? Sony does the heavy lifting for you. The STR-DH550 features Digital Cinema Auto Calibration. That means the receiver can configure your speakers for optimum sound once you have them placed where you want them. Just plug in the included setup mic and follow the on-screen instructions for sound tailored to your room and speakers.
Your receiver powers your speakers and lets you connect and select your entertainment sources. But a great receiver does a lot more it ignites your emotions. From the passion of a favorite musical artist, to the crossfire of a super-charged movie soundtrack, to the intensity and immersion of a fast-paced video game, your receiver is the key to experiencing and enjoying it in full.
Great replacement for an old Kenwood unit that failed. I really like the Easy setup feature that optimizes your listening area for you.
Pros: Easy to setup. Sounds great.
I purchased this unit because it can be hooked up to my HD TV, PS3 and my Blu-ray player and it works great.
Pros: Easy setup, Easy to program and sounds great when watching movies or listening to music.
Cons: None for me.
I really like this receiver. First let me say that I bought from the scratch and dent section so I got an even better price. (just a hint for all you bargain shoppers).
Even thought I bought this from the scratch and dent section, the receiver was perfect, no scratches no dents and looked to be in perfect shape.
The set=up was straight forward, plug the wires in etc., the antenna set up is typical of other Sony receivers (I have two others that I bought used... So this is my first "new" Sony). The HDMI plugs were the reason I bought this, and they work fine. The speaker connectors are the cap and post kind. Bend the wire and screw it on. I miss the plug and stuff and the RCA type connectors.
Once set up with all the wires you can either set have the unit "tweak" the sound to your room, or ignore it. Tweaking was easy, lay out the microphone and aloe the receiver to go though it's noises and you're done.
Great looks and Great sound.
One bugaboo about the set=up thought the remote takes triple A batteries, the box the unit came in contained double A.
Pros: Easy set up Good looks Great sound Extremely wonderful price.
Cons: Why don't the manufacturers build in a MP3 players that will randomize files for music instead of assuming you have one that will do it. Would be handy. Why does Sony not take the lead and have connections for other sound devices (turntables tape decks tec.) or, at least more than one auxiliary connection?
Only wish I had known the ohms as low for my Boss speakers
Easy to setup and will switch audio and video between HDMI devices. Love the auto sound measurement device included.
positively one of the best products I have ever used !!!
Simple to set up if you are highly tech savvy. If not, good luck. Instructions are extremely basic. No manual. No explanation of buttons on remote. Push a button and take your chances, I guess. They saved money in several ways on this unit. Speaker terminals are cheap, basic and difficult to use. Sound quality is good enough for the average human ear. Still a good value for the price.
Pros: Good value. Good basic unit
Cons: No Manual.
Have not been unable to check out the full function yet. So far the product seems to be solid and meets my expectations. Sound and video are great during a blue ray input test.
Pros: The ability to easily play content from an iPhone or iPod was key to me. I wish my high dollar Sony home theatre receiver offered this.
Cons: None that have surfaced in my limited testing so far.
I wasn't sure if I wanted to buy the 7.2 Sony or the 5.2 Sony set up. After reading many pages from Crutchfield, I finally decided to go with Sony's STR-DH550. The box arrived and I was like a child on Christmas morning. After unpacking the Sony and placing it under the TV I was marveled on how beautiful this Sony STR-DH550 really was. Clean lines, front buttons virtually hidden and easy to read display. Hooking the STR-DH550 up was quick and easy. HDMI's clearly marked and easy to read as well. I had no problem hooking up the Sony CDP-CE500, PS4, Direct-TV as well as the speaker wires. My only issue was the speaker hook up. My hands are nimble but it true isn't easy to hook speak wire to the terminals. This fault, if you want to call it that wasn't so bad that I would change my 5 star rating on this Sony STR-DH550. Thank you Sony for making an incredible and cost effective piece of entertainment.
Pros: Clean lines. Easy to read front display. Plenty of HDMI hook ups. Powerful.
Cons: Speaker terminals (if that's really a problem)
Easy set up. Excellent build quality and sound!
Just what it says. Read reviews and talked with tech.sounds great with my dmh speakers. Set up was easy, also got all new monster cables. I replaced a six year old denon amp.
Pros: None so far
Cons: No printed manual
I have been using Sony products for all of my home theater and audio needs for several years. Sony has always been very dependable and innovative and the Sony STR DH-550 is no exception. I enjoy listening to hi-rez audio files and purchased this receiver with that in mind. WAV files(44.1kHz /16bit) can be played easily using USB storage devices through the USB port on the front of the receiver. I have a portable hi-rez audio player which plays all levels of files from MP3, WAV and on up to Sony's DSD(Direct Stream Digital) resolution. I can play this device through the receiver by connection via the coaxial input on the back of the receiver. Switching to the coaxial input involves going through menu steps to reassign the input. I have another Sony receiver(STR DH-700) in which switching to coaxial input involves pushing a button. Having to go through the menu to enable the coaxial input as opposed to just pushing a button is about the only drawback. But, it is a one-time operation to reassign the input. I do have the receiver connected to a Blu-ray player and television. The setup is easy. The sound quality is excellent and I would highly recommend this receiver, especially to music lovers who are into higher resolution listening.
Pros: Easy setup. Ease of use involving the USB port to listen to WAV audio files. Ability to connect higher resolution audio player is a major plus.
Cons: Having to maneuver through the menu system to setup the coaxial input is a tiny bother.
I bought this to replace my out of date Pioneer receiver. I stream 95% of my movies via my Roku3. The HDMI switching allows me to stream movies from my Roku3 through the receiver and into my TV without having to run audio lines from the TV back into the receiver. It makes wiring very simple. So far the sound quality has been great and I haven't noticed any degradation with the video signal. Overall I'm very happy with the purchase and of course the excellent service from Crutchfield. Prompt shipping and they were nice enough to include 4 sheets of labels which made wiring the surround speakers easy.
Pros: Easy to wire. Accepts banana plugs for clean connections. If you have a Bravia TV it will sync with the TV allowing you to use the TV controls to control the receiver.
Cons: I haven't come across any cons.
For the price this is an excellent receiver/amplifier. Perhaps my favorite feature of the item is it's passive HDMI connection. Meaning that even when the amp is turned off he dvd player hooked up through it's HDMI inputs can still play movies and simply use the tv speakers.
Pros: Passive HDMI
Cons: None for me.
So far i'm very pleased with this product.
Pros: easy to set-up, easy to use
Cons: none yet
you do not get 90 watts per channel... you get 70 watts per channel... sony rates this receiver at 6ohms... very deceptive.... most people have 8 ohms speakers... so beware... you only get 70 watts per channel... moving around the on screen menu is a pain... a no frills receiver... you get what you pay for... not much.... would i buy this again.... nooooooooooooooo.... i gave it to my son... nuff said....
Pros: plays 4 ohm speakers quite easily that is why i gave it a three star rating...
Cons: only 70 watts at 8 ohms... not enough power for my living room stereo... had to buy 110 watt yamaha av...
Love this Sony Receiver. We had a little difficulty setting it up, but most likely it was us, not the receiver! Would recommend to others.
Overall a solid product. Please keep in mind that this product supports up to 5 speaker surround. I've had HDMI "handshake issues" when connecting XBOX 360 to this receiver and sending signal wirelessly. One has to turn on XBOX360 last in sequence for video to display; this did not occur when hooking up XBOX to Yamaha receiver.
Cons: only supports 5 speakers; HDMI handshake issue not observed with Yamaha receiver
This receiver sounds really nice!
Pros: Good quality of sound, easy to setup
I love this sony receiver this is my first time buying a receiver i had no problems with it the setup was easy and soon as i connected my tv,ps3 cable box, speakers the sounds was great
Pros: Sounds, quality ,service
I needed to replace my 14 year old home theatre receiver. After talking with Crutchfield's advisors I confirmed that the DH550 would be the best value for my existing and future needs. I used HDMI cable to hook up my cable, Blu-ray, and Apple TV and had no problems starting the receiver up. I had an immediate improvement in picture/sound quality. This is a very reasonable cost unit!
Pros: Very Reasonable cost home theatre receiver. SONY has a long history as a reliable supplier. Easy hookup and fit comfortably in my existing cabinet. Remote control much simpler than older models.
Cons: Finding the User Manual online was not difficult and but SONY did not provide a PDF copy for download.
Very happy with this product for the price
Pros: Easy to set up
Cons: Goes into stand-by mode too quickly
For the money this is an excellent receiver. I had an Onkyo 5008 ($3,000 receiver) go bad and until the new line of Denon receivers come out I just needed something to hold me over. I have expensive Def Tech speakers, a 9.1 channel setup. I was shocked that this less expensive receiver would produce such good sound. Obviously it's not the same as the Onkyo, but it is surprisingly good. What I learned is that you need to put the bulk of your money into speakers and less into the receiver in order to get the most for your money.
Pros: Excellent sound for the money
Cons: Lacks some power and features, only outputs to a 5.1 speaker system
As always, Sony has another one of the best home theatre systems for the dollar. I am very satisfied with the unit and would recommend it to people on a moderate budget.
Pros: Easy to use remote control. It has a simple to use sound leveling system built in that adjusts the speakers automatically which is a huge time saver. Blends in well with other units I have without a lot of distracting lights and buttons. Crutchfield had it here in a day which was a pleasant surprise!!
Cons: I have not found anything I do not like about it yet.
Replacement for my 20 year plus Onkyo Stereo. Connected to my Samsung smart HDTV, Sony Blueray DVD player, Teac CD, book shelf speakers without any issues.
Pros: Great entry level product for todays HDTV and Blueray w/ 4 HDMI inputs and 1 output. Great for customers like me that was looking for easy hook ups w/o all the bells and whistles of the higher end stereos. Fits my needs w/o costing more than necessary.
Cons: Access to initial on screen setup was a bit tricky but understand why they did it this way w/ so many different combinations of audio / video products possibilities. Very helpful when you have older products pre HDMI and need to understand how to hook up.
Ok for the money'will use in the bedroom.Be sure to read what it will play.Does not play super cds But well worth the money
Cons: will not play super cds
Great budget receiver with enough power to fill my 12x14 bedroom with clean & loud surround sound. Sony is always solid. Easy set-up with included microphone.
Pros: *Lots of power *Easy set up *Can use two subs *Sounds very good
Cons: *Better sounding receivers out there (cost more though)
Very satisfied with the Sony STR-DH550 rcvr! Replaced an Onkyo 750 with a bad HDMI board which eventually fried after 6 yrs. Would not go back to Onkyo. They offered a refurbished unit at half the refurbished price to get about the same power level as the Sony. They may have corrected their board problem but at half the price it was still $100 more than Sony and only a 1 yr. warranty. The Sony matches my tv and b/r player. It performs flawlessly with crisp sound via my Mirage OS3 spkr 5.1 system.
Pros: Excellent Sound control especially the DCS (Digital Cinema Sound) for B/R movies! Plenty of Power. Movies at 55 setting (of 73 max) are very, very loud but clear. No distortion even though the bass does rattle some nearby loose items which are now moved elsewhere.
Cons: On screen menu is sometimes time consuming to get to settings. Only reason I did not give it 5 stars. Downloaded parts of the manual via Crutchfield website. Their site is awesome.
Recently bought to replace an older Sony home theater amp. Relatively simple hookups which actually improve the video signals, especially on my non hi def channels, which is something of an unexpected surprise. Instruction guides should be much more complete/detailed, and like many new amps, does not have a phono connection, so if you need one will have to invest in a separate phono pre amp. Fortunately, I have a separate system for my music.
Exactly as advertised. Great product for basic home theater system. Remote was very basic, but receiver works perfectly with xfinity remote.
Pros: Ease of set up, Size, Sound quality
Cons: Remote not very useful
This receiver suits my needs perfectly. Ability to use the HD pass through is great. Sound quality is good. One major factor in this purchase was the HD inputs and compatibility with Sony products.
Pros: Easy set up. Friendly on screen menu. Sounds great. Looks great. Works well with other Sony equipment. Auto calibration works nicely. Nice price for a good receiver for home use.
Cons: Can not find any in my house. A sound engineer in an acousticly perfect room may need an upgrade. In the average living room it's great. .
Good, basic receiver. Easy to use & set up.
We purchased this receiver as part of an electronics upgrade in our motor home. It had all the features we needed and at a good price point.
Pros: Price, connections, size/power.
Cons: A lot of the features such as radio presets, and setup features can only be accessed by the on screen function on an HDMI connected TV. If you are thinking of using this receiver without an HDMI connected TV this can be an issue.
This Sony DH550 is very good for the price and I am satisfied with the purchase so far.
Pros: Generally very good for the price, for music and movies.
Cons: But the remote is too basic, and do not know how to use remote for on screen settings. I would prefer a manual with instructions.
Another very good product from Sony. Easy to set up and works perfectly with my Infinity speakers and sub.
I received the SonyDH 550 in good time and boxed fairly well. Outside box could have been a little heavier with a bit more tape, but well packaged. The DH 550 was easy to set up and the only caveat is the annoying fact that it does not come with a paper manual. One problem I encountered was the subwoofer was not getting a signal. I called Crutchfield tech assistance after not being able to find a solution on the Sony customer service site. Sony really drops the ball on tech support. A very annoying experience. My call to Crutchfield was almost as frustrating. The gentleman I spoke to could not identify what the problem was, with a little attitude thrown in, and suggested I reset the receiver and start again. I did that and still the problem persisted. It was only after I did more online research that I discovered that the receiver has to be configured manually to the 5.1 setting. That's something basic, but after just getting out of hospital a few days prior, and after a fifteen hour procedure with a lot of drugs, I wasn't as sharp as I would hope for.
Pros: Easy set up without the unnecessary bells and whistle's. Excellent sound and HDMI pass thru. Good value.
Cons: No manual, unimpressive tech support from Sony and Crutchfield. It lost one star for those reasons.
Excellent service from Crutchfield and this is a great product.
This a get what you paid for item. Nothing extraordinary. I use it for my CD player and it works fine.
Cons: Wish it had more options for 2 speaker sound system.
I found that the first receiver I got from Crutchfield, a Denon AVRS500BT, simply would not work with my Comcast X1 box, OR with the replacement box I made them come out and install. In desperation I tried this Sony and it worked perfectly out of the box the first time. Same identical conditions that the Denon would not work under. All-HDMI hook-ups don't always just plain work, but this combo was very happy. So Comcast X-1 customers might want to consider this receiver first, and it's $50 cheaper. No downside. All sounds are crisp and clear and it solved the center channel dialog problem that made us want to do this in the first place. Highly recommended as an excellent value.
Pros: Worked fine with Comcast X1 DVR box on an all HDMI connection, very reasonably priced.
Cons: None for me.
Exceptional A/V receiver for the money. Sound/power output quality is so much better than I expected from a $200 unit. Simple to use, setup and customize.
Pros: Bang for the buck. Simple menus.
Cons: A little bulky.
I am simply amazed at the quality of this product for the price. It blows my old 5 .2 system away. The sound & video quality of this unit is amazing & it provides me with all The inputs & outputs that I need. Had no idea how much better sound & video quality this unit had compared to my old one until I set it up. Sales Rep named Troy was great at helping me determine which unit was right for me. I would not hesitate to purchase from Crutchfied in the future. Great prices & customer service with life of the equipment customer support service. So great to order from a company that really cares about their customers. Unit was simple to set up & even though they provide assistance setting it up if needed I did not require any. Many thanks Crutchfield. If a 5 .2 system meets your needs I don't think you could beat this one for the price.
Pros: Great quality unit for the price, very simple & easy to use remote unit. I am completely happy with my purchase.
I got this to replace a 10 year old Sony Home Theater Receiver and to go with my new Sony 4K TV and Media player. Big improvement in quality sound from my old receiver. Very easy to set up with all the HDMI inputs and the HDMI output to the TV. The auto-calibration for the sup pound sound worked very well.
Pros: Very good quality especially for the cost.
I'm pretty much in agreement with all the comments/reviews I looked over on-line, before deciding to purchase. I like the product for the price and would purchase again. Mind you, I'm just starting to enjoy it and don't pretend to be an expert.
Pros: Nice appearance and styling. Good price. Solid.
Cons: Button titles on front are amazingly small and foolish. Product designers need to talk to the market place -- clearly they don't ask for user input. The technical aspects of design are fine, but design the whole package--not just the insides! (This isn't just a Sony issue; nearly every major electronics manufacturer fails in this regard.)
Great entry level surround sound system at an affordable price. Bought infinity primus bookshelf speakers and sounds great just ordered my central channel speaker yesterday and plan to buy two tower speakers in near future to round out system
Pros: Great sound at an affordable price
Cons: No operating manual have to download it off the net to learn how to program it
Replaced my previous Sony receiver to be able to have HDMI access with my 5.2 system. great options and easy to configure and use.
Pros: Easy set up, ample power, clean sound at low and high volume, but also is dependent on your speaker system.
Great receiver without unneeded features. Easy setup and good sound.
Pros: Low price and good audio. Good remote.
Cons: No component connectivity up-conversion for older component peripherals.
I needed an entry level receiver for a pair of book shelf Klipsch speakers that I bought recently. This combo works well together what can I say.
Pros: Great price, well built, looks good and works great.
Cons: One complaint is there is no 5.1 channel in or out. But already knew this. At this price point you can't get everything.
Great product and the customer service was awesome. I expect no less from crutchfield. Thanks
Pros: Great have no problems
Bought this as a replacement for an old mid-range Sony receiver from the early 90's that finally bit the dust. Arrived quickly, easily set up, and allows a great deal of flexibility in use. However, I am extremely disappointed in the bass response of this unit. MY fault - didn't research it enough to determine that there are no longer any bass / treble controls on lower end receivers. Just assumed they would be there and I would be able to adjust the sound to my tastes. Only adjustments available are pre-set sound fields and very minor B/T adjustments (+/- 5 db). Using this with a set of Infinity SM 115's that have never had any trouble with low end reproduction. Currently researching weather a powered sub will solve the issue or if I need to bite the bullet and purchase a whole new receiver. Again, a nice unit. Just not what I was expecting.
Pros: easy hook-up and use
Cons: no bass response no bass/treble controls (only pre-selected sound fields)
Excellent Receiver for the price. I have 5 speakers & 2 subwoofers hooked up & it sounds great. Great receiver if you just want a 5-2 system.
Great sound and features for the price. Highly recommend.
receiver works good. not having a operating mauual that you can use while sitting in front of the tv is a pain. i have purchased many sony products this is first one without instruction manual
Pros: works good
Cons: no instruction manual for operator
Overall a great receiver for a moderate sized home theater environment. Easy to use, simple controls. Very nice sound staging, simple set up.
Pros: Sound staging, easy to use, simple setup. Aesthetically pleasing Sony compatibility
Cons: Annoying "boink" sound on startup.
Exelente amplificador muy buen power con exelente calidad de sonido. Por el precio es exelente compra.
Excellent amplifier with very good power and excellent quality of sound. Its an excellent purchase for the price.
Cons:Crutchfield response on November 18, 2014 Translation provided by Crutchfield's Spanish Sales & Support team. Visit our new Spanish-language site at www.crutchfieldenespanol.com.
awsome reciever pushes my 2 12s and 15 with no problem
Pros: has allot of power pushing for the price
Cons: don't see any thing wrong yet
Better than expected. Workes great
Excellent receiver at a low price, works well with my Sony Bravia TV and the remote from the TV.
Pros: Quality at a low price,
Cons: Lack of wifi
I purchased this receiver to replace an older Sony. I was amazed at the clarity of the audio and video! Both are excellent, even though I was very pleased with the older model. Very easy to set up. Great features. Use with my 42" Panasonic Plasma. Would highly recommend to anyone who desires a outstanding 5:2 receiver.
Pros: Features and ease of setup. Great HDMI connections. Attractive receiver!
We purchased to replace a Sony bravia all in one receiver that died in an electrical storm. The STR-DH550 sounds much nicer and the surround sound is noticeably better than the previous receiver.
Pros: Sounds great.
Cons: Rather large No option for unpowered sub that we already owned. We purchased a new powered subwoofer to go along.
This unit is used to improve on TV audio. I'm not looking for great fidelity here.
Pros: Lots of connectivity. Great value.
Cons: Silly audio output mixer presets
I bought this receiver as a gift for my daughter and son-in-law, and I must write that this receiver is perfect for their needs. They couldn't be happier. It is both stylish and functional, and it has all the features that they wanted including a USB port that charges their smartphones while they enjoy their favorite tunes. Most importantly, this receiver effortlessly makes their speakers sing with great detail and clarity.
Pros: Functional and stylish with just the right added features at a terrific price!
This Sony receiver ascted and set up like all the others I have ever had...fast and easy. Even easier now with HDMI cables. Sound was great and there was a noticable difference in quality from the previous receiver (which was an older Sony)
Pros: Easy set up, HDMI cable compatable, easy navigation menu, great sound quality
Cons: Knobs for speaker wires are close and hard to work with if you have big fingers. Some other simple clip style would be nice.
Fast and easy set-up. I was replacing an old amp. I used the pre-printed cable labels provided and this made the removal and replacement very fast. The speaker tuning feature worked great and was very accurate. I control this unit with a logitech universal remote and it responds as expected.
Pros: Speaker tuning and ease of set-up
Cons: microphone for speaker set-up is about 12ft. If you have a large room this could be an issue
In the past year I have owned three different Sony receivers. The first two were the 550, the one I purchased and the replacement. I also bought a high end Sony receiver from a friend and took it to get repaired. It wasn't but 2 years old. The HDMI circuit board was fried. The tech says he sees a lot of the Sony receivers with this problem... My friend kindly took it back. The 550 I still have and it's turning on and off out of the blue and of course, it's out of warranty.. Buy a Yamaha... The rx-v590 I purchased 16 years ago is still going strong in my sons room.
Pros: Bells and whistles.
Cons: Where do I start...? The scan function takes forever and is not user friendly, the center speaker sounds muffled(power amp issue) bugs in the system, etc....
Replaced my previous Sony receiver to be able to have HDMI access, IPOD access, with my 5.2 system. The receiver provides ample power for my Triad Speaker System. Ample sound settings for any venue you may have, and it is very easy to setup and use.
Pros: Easy set up, ample power, clean sound at low and high volume, but also is dependent upon the fidelity of your speaker system.
Cons: The only constructive criticism I have, being old school, is having a complete printed user manual. A setup guide is provided to get setup to get you started, and I was able to download the user pdf file provided by the Sony website.
I've only had this receiver for a couple weeks but I'm very happy with it. I mainly use it to improve the sound of my TV. Seems like a good product for the money.
I use this receiver with a Sony S5100 Bluray and a Sharp LC-70SQ15U. When I power off the TV, the bluray and this Sony Receiver power off, makes it simple. The menu system is ok, could be better with clearer on screen descriptions.
Pros: Connects well with other products via HDMI. ARC - audio return channel works well with the Sharp TV. Good quality sound. Auto speaker setup with included microphone.
Cons: Remote control is limited. No way to disable on screen volume numbers that show up on the TV. No way to delay the picture to help fixed the out of sync video/audio with LCD TVs.Crutchfield response on September 10, 2014 Thanks for your review. Here's how to find and activate the AV Sync feature: From the Home menu, go to the Settings menu and select Audio Settings. Select A/V Sync and turn it on. The receiver's audio output will be delayed by 60 milliseconds, which will minimize the time gap between the audio output and visual display.
great product for the price, pretty straight forward to use. good quality
Pros: ease of use, sounds great
Cons: none really
I've only had it hooked up for 2 days but it works beautifully, great options and easy to configure and use. As usual Crutchfield's service both in the ordering and shipping was outstanding!
Pros: Ease of use, quick set up, flexibility.
This is a great receiver with plenty of options. I had originally purchased a Yamaha and didn't like it. So, I returned it (Crutchfield is great about returns) and got this one. It was easy to setup. I couldn't be happier.
Pros: HDMI Pass-through Plenty of power
Replaced our 14 year old 5.1 JVC with the Sony and was stunned with the improved sound and clarity of the voices in movies, which is primarily what we use it for with our 65inch Viera Plasma TV
Pros: easy intuitive set up and sound balancing with the included microphone was simple and accurate.

The STR-DH550 also includes dual LFE (mono-subwoofer) outputs for connecting two powered subs.
Digital Cinema Auto Calibration (DCAC): The Sony STR-DH550 is equipped with Digital Cinema Auto Calibration Technology which uses the included microphone to automatically check the speaker connections, adjust the speaker output levels, calculate the distance from each speaker to the listening position, and distinguish frequency characteristics of each speaker. The microphone has an 15' cord attached that plugs into the microphone input on front of the receiver. You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker settings.
Auto Format Direct (A.F.D.) Mode: The Auto Format Direct (A.F.D.) mode allows you to listen to high fidelity sound and select the decoding mode for listening to a 2-channel stereo sound as multi-channel. You can set the A.F.D. mode to Auto or Multi Stereo.
Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic: The Sony STR-DH550 AV receiver features Dolby Digital and DTS-HD decoding, as well as offers Dolby Pro Logic audio processing.
Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). Even though the AV receiver will decode 7.1ch surround sound (via HDMI), it will only output 5.1ch surround, because it lacks Surround Back channel speaker outputs.
HD Digital Cinema Sound (HD D.C.S): HD Digital Cinema Sound (HD-D.C.S.) is Sony's new innovative home theater technology using the latest acoustic and digital signal processing technologies. It is based on precise response measurement data of a mastering studio. With this mode, you are able to enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies at home with not only the high quality of sound, but also the best sound ambience, just as the movie's sound engineer intended in the mastering process.
Pure Direct: The receiver's Pure Direct mode outputs audio from only the front left and right speakers without any tone or DSP processing; only the volume and front speaker balance adjustments are active.
Headphone Modes: The receiver offers two distinct headphone sound modes.
Advanced Audio Settings: These advanced audio settings allow you to tailor the sound to your source content, listening conditions, and your personal preferences.
Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Sony STR-DH550 offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.
HDMI 2.0: The receiver is equipped with four HDMI (v.2.0) inputs for connecting HDMI-equipped audio/video component; such as your satellite/cable receiver, Blu-ray/DVD player, and game system. It also allows you to connect all of your devices to your TV with a single HDMI cable via its ARC-compatible HDMI monitor output, reducing cable clutter. The receiver's HDMI v.2.0 jacks are compatible with 4K/60Hz and 1080p video, 3D video signals, Deep Color & x.v.Color technology; as well as LipSync, ARC, and HDMI control.
Note: The AV receiver's HDMI 2.0 jacks do not support the latest HDCP 2.2 copyright protection for 4K ultra-HD content, so it will not support 4K content from satellite/cable providers, online video services, and Blu-ray disc which are copyright protected with HDCP 2.2.
24p True Cinema Mode: The 24p True Cinema Mode allows you to watch movies at their native frame rate 24p format (24 frames per second) when paired with a 24p playback device like a Blu-ray Disc Player.
MHL Compatible HDMI: One of the receiver's rear-panel HDMI inputs (labeled "Video/MHL") is MHL compatible, which provides direct connection of MHL compatible smartphones, like your Android smartphone. Playback of up to 1080p video and multi-channel audio from the phone is supported. The receiver will also charge (5V/1A) your connected phone. Play, Stop, and other basic operations can be controlled from the AV receiver's remote control.
HDMI Standby Pass-Through: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through feature conveniently allows you to access all your HDMI connected devices without having to power on the receiver.
Composite Video Inputs: The Sony STR-DH550 is also fitted with two analog composite video inputs and one composite video monitor output. The composite video jacks support 480i video signals only.
Front-Panel USB Port: This AV receiver is equipped with a front-panel USB (type-A) port that allows you to enjoy WAV (8-48kHz; 16-bit), MP3 (32-320kbps), WMA (48-192kbps), and AAC (48-320kbps)music files from a USB mass storage class memory device; such as your Android smartphone (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), Sony Walkman, or USB thumbdrive. The receiver can recognize up to 256 folders and 256 files in each folder. You can use the receiver's on-screen menu (via HDMI) and remote control to navigate your stored music files on your connected USB memory device. USB portable audio devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the AV receiver's USB port (5V/1A); even in standby mode.
iPod/iPhone Direct: The Sony STR-DH550 supports digital music playback from an iPod, iPhone, or iPad using its front-panel USB (type-A) port. Simply plug your compatible Apple device into the receiver's front-panel USB port, using the cable that came with your iPod/iPhone/iPad. Stored music and music apps from your connected Apple device can be played through the AV receiver, bypassing the iPod/iPhone D/A converter for better sound quality. The iPod/iPhone/iPad can be controlled by the receiver's remote, or you can continue to use the Apple device's clickwheel or touchscreen. You can search for stored music on your compatible Apple device by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, Composer, or Audiobook. You also have access to Repeat (One/All/Off) and Shuffle (Songs/Albums/Off) functions. The receiver offers limited control (Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) of music apps on your iPod/iPhone. Song/artist information from stored music and music apps on your iPod/iPhone will display on your connected TV via HDMI. Your Apple iPod/iPhone's battery will be charged while connected to the receiver (max. 1A). This unit will not charge the iPad. The Sony STR-DH550 is "made for iPod/iPhone" and supports the following iPod/iPhone model functions (as of 4/4/2014).
|Apple Device||Generation||Tested Version||Media Type||Control Type||Display Type||Charge|
|Audio||Video||Remote||iPod/iPhone||Album Art||Artist/Song Text||Track Info|
Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.
On-Screen Menu (via HDMI): You can display the menu of the receiver on your HDMI connected TV screen and select the function you want to use from the on-screen menu using the included IR remote control. If your TV is connected to the composite video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.
AM/FM Tuner: The STR-DH550 has 30 presets each for AM and FM for a total of 60. In addition to preset and auto tuning, stations can be tuned directly by frequency. Each preset station can be given an 8 character name.
Input Naming: You can enter a name of up to 8 characters for each of the receiver's inputs (except Tuner) and display the name on its display. This is convenient for labeling the jacks with the names of your connected components.
Sleep Timer: The unit may be set to automatically turn off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.
Auto Standby: Auto Standby lets you set the receiver switch to standby mode automatically after 30 minutes when you do not operate the receiver or when there is no signal input to the receiver.
Wireless Remote: The supplied IR remote is pre-coded to control this Sony receiver, Sony TVs, Sony CD players, Sony DVD players and recorders, and Sony Blu-ray disc players and recorders.
Bravia Sync (HDMI-CEC): Sony's Bravia Sync feature allows you to easily manage select Sony Bravia Sync components and other manufacturer's HDMI-CEC enabled audio/video components with a single remote. By connecting Bravia Sync and other components that are compatible with the HDMI Control function using a HDMI (1.3+) cable, operation is simplified in the following ways.
Did a web search and narrowed choice to two. Brooke helped me narrow down to Sony because I phone connectivity with USB port is important to us. This is my third Crutchfield purchase in last year and the main reason I came back is your exceptional tech support and customer assistance. Yes you have 4 separate HDMI input with 2 optical input. The phono spec Analog: Sensitivity: 500 mV/50 kilohms S/N (*3): 105 dB (A, 500 mV (*4)), since I do not know your spec of your turntable not sure. It's a very nice receiver for the cost. [ AMOS Feb 10, 2016 ]
If your question is relative to physical separation then absolutely yes, check out the picture of the back of the unit on the product page. While I haven't the exact set up you want I think input choices should be easy with the remote. [ Todd Feb 10, 2016 ]

I only use the hdmi in/outs VC they for sure carry both digital video and audio. Here's what Sony says about that jack.., so I'm guessing it's video only. Don't take my word for it.., ck the manual to be sure (manual online) Sony says; An input that lets you connect any device with a coaxial digital output. Though coaxial digital connections use standard RCA-style jacks, a coaxial digital audio cable designed specifically for the wider frequency bandwidth of digital signals is recommended. [ TONY Aug 13, 2015 ]
the unit is not DNLA capable, you will need to connect another device that is DNLA compatible. The USB port plays audio files from a USB drive in many formats including WAV and MP3, and is also compatible with iOS devices. [ JASON Dec 23, 2015 ]
No it won't. I tried myself. After checking the manual it is only for Apple devices with USB capabilities, like a IPOD. [ THELORD Jul 19, 2015 ]

Yes, this receiver will work for the surround sound however I would recommend the Sony STR DN850 as a better option for a 4K TV. I have both of these receivers and they both perform great. There are two big differences between the two. The 850 is easier to hook up to you 4K TV as you will only need one Hi Speed HDMI cable to hook up the receiver to the TV for video and sound plus the 850 also has WIFI. [ Dale May 30, 2015 ]

Yes. (see notes from the Crutchfield website too) Getting started with a home theater system doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. Plug in your Apple® or AndroidT device With more people using smartphones and tablets for music and movies, it's great to have a receiver that can take advantage of them. Sturdy binding posts make connecting speakers quick and easy, with bare wire or banana plug connectors - a rarity at this price point. [ TONY May 11, 2015 ]

I currently have two bookshelf speakers and a sub woofer. So far, it does drive all speakers simultaneously. It also has Dolby Digital setting. You have to figure out which setting is most pleasing to you. I'm saving up to buy a center-channel speaker. I'll update my reply after I test it out. I don't have any serious complaints about this unit. [ SAM Jul 12, 2015 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The Sony receiver does have a multi channel stereo that sounds like what your Pioneer might have been doing. Sony describes it like this: Multi Stereo: Outputs 2-channel left/right signals from all speakers. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy Jan 21, 2015 ] Staff
yes you can use this with two speakers. There are several different speaker modes you can choose from. I have been using this receiver for almost a month now and it has been great.I would highly recommend this because For the price you can't beat it and you always have the flexibility of using it for surround sound down the road. [ CYNTHIA Jan 16, 2015 ]
I am using mine in a 3.1 setup and it sounds great. My two devices output 5.1 and the receiver adjusts the sound really well to 3.1. I can see a setting in the calibration settings for 2.0 and 2.1 so I would assume it works the same. [ David Jan 16, 2015 ]
Yes you can use as a conventional 2 channel receiver. [ JAMES Jan 15, 2015 ]
I would think so. But if I were you I would contact customer support at Crutchfield & you can chat with them online & I feel sure they can answer your question. I am using all channels on mine & it is by far the best receiver I have owned. I chatted with them online & they helped me decide the best replacement system for my old one & I am very sastified. Hope this helps. [ ROBERT Jan 14, 2015 ]
I just bought this amp and am using it to run two Pioneer bookshelf speakers--that's all I wanted--and it's working beautifully. [ PAUL Jan 14, 2015 ]
No problem with 2 channel setup. That is how mine is currently connected. I got it for the USB, not the 5.2 capability. [ STEVE Jan 14, 2015 ]
Yes, you can. I currently have only a left and right hooked up to this receiver and it sounds really good. The receiver has a setting for stereo or 5.1. For the price (I paid 199) it's a good receiver. [ Frank Worsham Jan 14, 2015 ]
Unless you spent $5,000 on a projector... that is the problem. Get an 80" flat screen LED TV and you will be blown away by the color. The Sony receiver does a good job on the audio. But, you must know it is an "entry level" receiver. My audio is outstanding with the receiver but you must have top performing speakers. My speakers are NHT's at $250 per left/right front and rear speakers. The center speaker is $350.00. I have an M&K 75w subwoofer. The Sony receiver and these speakers produce sound that is hard to believe. Projection TVs are an older concept and are fading away... [ JOE Jan 12, 2015 ]
Hi John W. The main reason I bought this specific receiver is because I needed a receiver that could pass through a 3D audio signal. I didn't know that this was such an unusual function - but my Denon receiver couldn't do it. The TV I'm viewing is a new Sony KDL-60W850B 3D TV. I'm very happy with the total set-up. I can honestly say I don't see any picture difference between running the signal from my DirecTV input HDMI vs. running the signal through my new Sony STR-DH550 and back to my TV. [ PAUL Jan 11, 2015 ]
I have no comparison. I'm using my Sony for 2 channel audio only right now. I do have and older model Onkyo TX-SR 806.That I use in my living room home theater and it works beautifully since buying it from Crutchfield back in 2010 or 2011. Hope this helps. [ rickyqueens, nyc Jan 09, 2015 ]
I have had this unit for 5 weeks very pleased with both the audio and video qualithy. [ WILLIAM W Jan 09, 2015 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: That Sony receiver does not have the inputs necessary for an RG-6 connection. In most cases you would run that RG-6 cable to a cable box and from the Cable Box to the receiver with one of the available inputs. Or directly to a TV. The "Coax" style connection on that Sony is for an FM antenna. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. No Bluetooth but if you have a Samsung TV you can use the screen mirroring function to stream audio and video from your Samsung Galaxy. ..nice because you will see the album art on tv [ DENNIS P Jan 08, 2015 ]
Hi Rob, I purchased this Sony around Thanksgiving. So far it's been great. However you are correct, this receiver doesn't have BT. The only way to connect is via front USB. You can then control the Ipod/Iphone via the Sony remote. The good news it works well and really isn't a hassle. [ HARVEY R Jan 06, 2015 ]
I've only had mine since Nov. and since Sony doesn't include instructions, we, the customers, are screwed. If it wasn't for Crutchfield helping me figure it out, I might have sent it back. As to your question, I don't have smart phones or anything of the kind. Best I can offer is find some way to make Sony admit they made the thing and stand behind it with help and instructions. Good Luck [ WARREN H Jan 05, 2015 ]

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: As long as your TV had HDMI inputs the receiver will work with it. If it doesn't have HDMI, you can check to see if it has an Optical Digital audio output. That would work with the receiver as well. We have a great deal on the Energy Micro speaker system right now that would work well with the power of this receiver: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_732RCMIC/Energy-RC-Micro-5-1.html?tp=184 If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. You can attach turntable to any of the red/white RCA inputs. However if you use an input with the same label as the HDMI the receiver will probably default to the HDMI if something is plugged in to it. My receivers do this anyway.
