Great receiver

Written By Mitch, Atlanta on Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this Sony Home Theater receiver for several reasons; an update to my 15+ yr old Pioneer home theater receiver, obtain more HDMI inputs for my newly purchased Panasonic Plasma HDTV and have better sound quality for this new HDTV as well. It has served all these functions quite well. Was even pleased to find out that in addition to total Sony "BRAVIA" integration with my 40" Sony HDTV (now in bedroom), it also integrates well enough with my new Panasonic Plasma. When the right input is selected and I turn the Panasonic TV on, it also fires up this Sony receiver automatically and no need to use its remote to get the right source selected as this is done automatically as well and TV sound is heard shortly thereafter.

I also chose this one cause it has PLENTY of inputs; HDMI, composite and component. Upconverts composite/component to HD so was glad to see that and have that feature as well. Overall, a worthy purchase.

I purchased this as an update for my 10 year old Sony AV / Surround unit. The performance is dramatically improved, especially with surround features. This is true for all sources and modes. Ease of use has improved, too.

Exchanged for a Yamaha

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this because of a markdown. Its got a whole lot of whiz bang. However, after a month or so, the display started acting funky. I decided to pay more and exchange the Sony for a Yamaha. I didn't really want a Sony anyhow, but I can't resist a bargain.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit as a gift to upgrade my home stereo. Unfortunitly I needed to purchase a new TV while the unit was being shipped to me. This stereo is so easy to work with and intergrates into my Panasonic TV very easy. Setup was a breeze, and to use it has been very easy for my wife. Certaintly has more power hten I will ever use, but it sounds great. I would recomend it to anyone.

I Love It!!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this reciever several months ago & I love it!!I have it connected to a Samsung 46" HD TV & 7 Infinity Speakers, plus a 10" Pioneer Subwoofer. Music sounds incredible. Movies are great too. I have it connected to DirecTV. Don't have a BluRay Player yet, but looking forward to it. Crutchfield was easy to deal with & my reciever came in several days. I wish I had bought my HDMI, Digital & Optical cables from Crutchfield so it would have all arrived at once without going out for cables. I hope it lasts as long or longer than my previous Sony Reciever. Thanks Crutchfield. I really do love it!!!!

Pros: I needed to replace an older Sony that started saying it was in protection mode. This reciever worked great the first try. I love all the different sound fields it has & the number of HDMI, optical & digital inputs. I'm rocking out right now at 100 watts per channel-it can get very loud with great sound. I like the DTS Neo6 Sound Field for Music. Makes 2 channel stereo into 7 different channels.

Cons: I have a Sony Walkman I'd like to connect to the reciever, but not an option. (Which is kinda wierd since they're both from Sony.)

Good Receiver

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Aside from the above, the unit works well.

Pros: Price

Cons: It is not possible to set up BD and Sat/Cable buttons with HDMI. These buttons assume you are using a seperate sound source from HDMI. Consequntly you need to use HDMI 1 as BD and change the information on the display to reflect BD. the same for Sat/Cable. It is very odd as most would think that you would push the BD button to watch Blu-Ray.

Great reciever, great price ! Not too complicated to operate if you have a little common sense. Very easy set up. The manual could go a little bit further in dept but not too difficult to understand.

Pros: Great reciever for the money. The remote has a couple of drawbacks but nothing i can't deal with.

Cons: 1st. One was defected but crutchfield sent me a new one and i was up and running in a couple of days.

Awesome AV receiver!!! Sony does it again!!!!

Written By Ken C., Keene, N.H. on Thursday, November 17, 2011

I had to replace an older Sony A/V receiver due to channels dying. I bought this one due to its reviews and its functions. It took me only a short time to set up. I did have one problem but with the asistance of Crutchfield tech suppport it was easily fixed by resetting the unit back to factory settings. The problem was caused by my 2 year old getting a hold of the remote and playing with buttons. Another winner from Sony. I love Sony products.

Pros: Ease of use. All of its awesome functions. love the on screen display!!!

Cons: Nothing!!!!

Piece of junk

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had the receiver connected for about 3 weeks now. I went to play a Blue-ray tonight and about 15 minutes into the movie, the receiver turned off. I noticed before it turned off, it said protector on the screen. I went to the manual checked all the connections and turned back on the receiver and once again the same thing has happened. I have tried everything and 6 times after getting the same error message, I have given up. I would return the receiver if I had the box since it has been three weeks and I am already having problems. Not sure what I should do. Anyways, I would not buy this receiver again at any price so I suggest you don't buy it unless you want problems.

Cons: I hate this receiver and am very disgruntled at the moment.

Best AV Receiver I've Ever Had!

Written By rich584, NJ on Thursday, October 20, 2011

This AV receiver is, by far, the best receiver I've ever had. Easy to set up, easy to use and upscales very well. I really can't think of anything negative to say about it. The sound quality is outstanding. I'm still amazed at the price. I paid $299 for mine, well worth the money.

We got the STR-DN1000 when it was on sale and we thought it was a great receiver. Plenty of features in a nice looking package. When we saw this model on sale we decided to upgrade and we made a great choice. This model had A few upgrades and few more features and was worth the buy. Blu-Ray is amazing. This is coupled with a 55" Samsung and Polk Audio speakers. Great buy!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have always been a Sony fan because they make the majority of professional movie and TV equipment. If you combine that with the realibility of ordering from Crutchfield it becomes a win win situation. I particularly like this model because Sony has simplified the set up with auto tuning and on screen display if you want to fine tune the settings. The binder connections for all seven speakers are a plus to make sure you have a solid contact that won't come loose. This model delivers good clean sound with plenty of punch. I think this reciever gives the best performance for the money of anything on the market today.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Started to have problems with old Sony surround sound reciever. Front channel getting sick. Wanted an upgrade. This reciever had a little more power, and WAY easier connections with HDMI inputs. Individual speaker tuning much easier. (tried Auto set up, liked Manual mode better) surround sound through system MUCH improved. (I run w/4 10" full range enclosed speakers, one in each corner and a center, no sub). Would recommend this reciever !

I got the sony receiver to replace an older one I had, so far I am very pleased with the ease of hook-up and performance of this unit. It got rid of the echo I had before and also communicates good with my other sony products. So I am very pleased with the service, quality and price of this receiver.

Great Sony Receiver

Written By Ashish, Houston on Saturday, July 16, 2011

This is a very nice and simple receiver for an affordable price. Great sound and great picture combines to form an excellent media experience. I had the onkyo nr609 receiver which was feature packed. But the sound output was much lower than that of this Sony receiver. This receiver is very basic. I have this receiver combined with a Klipsch HDT500 and together they work great. With an optional adapter, listening to XM radio is possible. But, I like listening to internet radio via my apple tv and apple tv lets me listen to tons of free radio stations which makes me want to forget all about XM and HD radio.

Since this is a Sony product and since I own other Sony products that is connected to this receiver that I have not purchased from Crutchfield, I prefer Sony's support to Crutchfield's support. As long as Sony offers support for this product, it is better to call Sony for help. Sony's support is excellent.

The reciever was a good buy. It sounds great and it was easy to set up. I have a Sony BD and TV which made the connections easy and I can use all the featrues like Bravia Sync, etc. I have the BD connected to the intrernet. Before connecting it to the reciever the quiality of the internet video was great. After connecting to the reciever is not that great any more. I tried different configurations from the reciever but no improvement was noticed. I have the BD connected directly to the TV again.

This reciever is what I expected from a Sony product, solid, reliable and full of features. It is replacing a Sony STR-DN997. the 997 was pre HDMI and needed quite a few wires to hookup all the HDTV, DVDs, etc. When I recieved the 1010, it just required four HDMI cables, replacing about 12 comp, optical, svideo, etc., cables. The automatic speaker setup was really nice, in that it setup the level for all the 7.1 speakers without me needing to spend hours trying to get it right.

Works like a charm. Cannot beat the price. Only part I don't like is that it always defaults to PCM. Would like to be able to switch it or have the choice rather than having to disable pass through in the menus to make DTS priority over PCM.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just set this receiver up yesterday and first impressions are pretty good. I
noticed an improvement in sound quality over my older HK335 probably
because I now have everything connected via HDMI. Setup was a little time
consuming and if you don't know what you are doing, like my wife, then this will
seem like a daunting task. The video comes through very clear but I did have a
couple of times where sound would not transmit from the Motorola Comcast
cable box. I don't know if that is the catv's fault or the receiver's. The build
quality is lacking on this Sony, it did feel a little cheap when lifting it up but I am
used to the HK which weighs over 30lbs. Overall, so far, I am happy with this

This is my second SONY receiver - my first has lasted for 10 years and was one of the original DTS decoders. I upgraded to this recently and love it! There is nothing out there that compares for the money! My friends have NAD and Yamaha, and coupled with my infinity speakers - mine sounds better, has better features - and I saved thousands! This one has it all and is set up for 3D theater which i have -

Remote kind of stinks though - they could have done a better job there...

A Wise Choice

Written By The_Inspector_069, Belleville, IL on Sunday, January 23, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For some time now, I've been disappointed in Sony's "box with knobs" design in A/V receivers. When I saw Sony's new line of receivers for 2010, I saw something that I hadn't seen since 1995. After coming to the Crutchfield site, I discovered the STN-DN1010. Immediately I was impressed. The design is up to date and there are no knobs. To me, knobs are "old school", (naturally, you need a knob for volume, but you get the point). I was also happy to see that there are all screw-on post speaker wire connectors, instead of those nasty clips. I also got a kick out of the Auto Calibration feature. It feels as if you are in the middle of an actually "old school" video game.

The performance of this unit is pretty impressive, especially when it come to the video format conversion to HDMI. The on screen display is a feature I cannot live without. I was happy to see the receiver had plenty of inputs, where is appears that other manufacturers are eliminating that expandability. I was a little disappointed in the size of the font used for the display on the unit. I believe it could have been a tad larger. The remote, well, it's ok. After having a remote Sony RM-LJ304 for fifteen years with a LCD display and was a learning remote, I've become spoiled. . The older remote provided as many features as the new remote, just half the size.

Everything considered, I am happy with my purchase.

Amazing receiver!

Written By Paul, Brooklyn, NY on Tuesday, January 18, 2011

What I find amazing about the 1010 is how many inputs it can handle. There are so
many little benefits that when all in one unit make for great receiver. It's great to have
surround sound with my HD TV now. Football games never sounded this good!

Written By JasonR, Long Beach, MS on Sunday, December 12, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Everything needed for a HD TV today and a 3D TV for later. HDMI switching/upconversion
and 3D ready was the BIG selling point for me. The Auto Calibration feature takes all the
guess work out of manually tuning each channel (my old reviever took me hours to set
up). This replaces my old reciever in my main viewing area of 10+ years that I moved to
my Bedroom because that receiver finally died after 15+ years.

Great upgrade at a good price

Written By Jenkins, Buffalo NY on Friday, September 10, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this Sony over others mainly because of the understated face, no crazy button field or led's to distract. I had an older Sony with no HDMI inputs, this unit definitly sounds much better and the surround decoding is a world above the old model. I have a pretty average setup and mainly use this for movie and TV watching rather than critical music listening so the look, price and features were more important to me than wattage ratings and critical sound quality. I figure that just about all the models in this price range are going to sound basically the same and my listening is at less than moderate volume so it's not worth it to me to seek out and pay for sound quality that i'm not going to hear with my setup and volume levels. The auto setup feature seemed to work pretty well and was fairly easy to figure out.

Pro's: Cool looking unit, the only one I could find with a smooth uncluttered face. Sounds good, has all the features I needed and not too many that I don't need and will never use. Good price for the look and features. I could have probably gotten the same features at the same price or less but not with that cool understated look.

Con's: The manual is terrible. So far the HDMI inputs work fine but I still can't get my ipod dock to play through an analog stereo input and the poorly written and confusing manual has been of little help thus far.

Headphone Headphone (2ch) This mode is select automatically if you use headphones when 2ch Stereo mode or AFD mode is selected. Standard 2-channel stereo sources completely bypass the sound field processing and multichannel surround formats are downmixed to 2-channels except LFE signals.
Headphone (Direct) Outputs the analog signals without processing by the tone or sound field control.

Effect Level: The Effect Level feature lets you adjust the presence of the surround effect for sound fields selected with the Movie or Music mode or Headphone Theater mode. You can choose from Minimum effect, Standard effect or Maximum effect.

Two Channel Modes: The Sony ES receiver offers the following two-channel audio modes:

Two Channel Mode

2-Channel Audio Effect

Two Channel Stereo Sets the receiver to power only the front left and right speakers, no surround and no subwoofer. Two channel sources bypass the sound field processing and multi channel sources are down-mixed to 2 channels.
Two Channel Analog Direct Amplifies the source without any processing, only the volume and front speaker balance adjustments are active.

Equalizer: You can adjust the tonal quality (bass and treble level) of the front speakers from -10dB to +10dB in 1dB steps.

Dynamic Range Compressor: This feature allows you to compress the dynamic range of the sound track. You can select Standard, Maximum compression, Auto, or Off (only works with Dolby Digital sources).

Night Mode: This function allows you to retain a theater like environment at low volume levels. When watching a movie late at night, you will still be able to hear the dialog clear even at a low volume level.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

Digital Inputs: The receiver has three optical digital inputs and one coaxial digital input. You can choose auto decoding or PCM for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel. All the digital audio jacks will support 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, and 96 kHz sampling frequencies. Three of the 4 digital inputs are assignable, while one of the optical digital inputs is dedicated for TV.

Note: When you connect components to both digital and analog audio input jacks on the receive, you can fix the audio input mode to either of them, or switch from one to the other, depending on the type of material you intend to watch.

Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.

Tuner: The STR-DN1010 has 30 presets each for AM and FM for a total of 60. In addition to preset and auto tuning, stations can be tuned directly by frequency.

SIRIUS Port: The optional SiriusConnect Home Tuner kit (item number 607SCH1 or 220SCH2P, both sold separately) allows you to receive Sirius Satellite Radio through the receiver, you can search Sirius radio stations by channel number, category, or direct tuning; you can also choose to display the channel name, channel number, category, artist name, song title, or composer. You can store up to 30 Sirius channels as presets.

Video Features

7 HD Inputs: The Sony STR-DN1010 is equipped with seven HD inputs. Four HDMI inputs (up to 1080/24p capable) let you connect a high-definition satellite receiver, Blu-ray Disc player, and game system for high definition video and audio. Three component inputs (1080/60i capable) provide added HD-capable connectivity and versatility.

  • HDMI: The receiver is equipped with four HDMI (ver.1.4) inputs for connecting HDMI-equipped audio/video components. All three HDMI inputs are capable of carrying uncompressed digital audio and video up to 1080p. There is also an HDMI (v.1.4) output which supports the ARC function that feeds audio/video signals to an HDTV. All HDMI (v.1.4) connections support 24p playback, x.v. color, deep color, and 3D video.
  • HD Component Video: This unit features three component video inputs and a component video monitor output. These jacks feature an 80 MHz bandwidth, making them capable of passing high-definition video signals.

HDMI Upconvert/Upscale: The AV receiver's HDMI upconvert/upscale function improves image quality of analog connected devices to near HD. Analog connected device signals (component/composite) are converted to digital, upscaled, and output via HDMI (480p, 720p, 1080, or 1080p), making one cable connection from the receiver to your TV possible.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through feature conveniently allows you to access all your HDMI connected devices without having to power on the receiver .

3D-Ready: The Sony STR-DN1010 is compatible with 3D-ready Blu-ray disc movies, video games and other 3D content through its HDMI (v.1.4) connections.

Note: 3D viewing requires 3D-ready source with 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D glasses, and high-speed HDMI cable. Other 3D accessories may also be required.

24p True Cinema Mode: The 24p True Cinema Mode allows you to watch movies at their native frame rate 24p format (24 frames per second) when paired with a 24p playback device like a Blu-ray Disc Player.

x.v.Color: The AV receiver supports x.v.Color, offering a wider color range than the current broadcast standard. For the x.v.Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Deep Color: The Sony receiver also supports Deep Color which allows the color depth of video signals passing through HDMI to be raised. The number of colors that could be expressed by 1 pixel was 24 bits (16,777,216 colors) with a standard HDMI jack. However, the number of colors which can be expressed by 1 pixel is 36 bits with a Deep Color enabled HDMI jack. Since the gradation of the depth of a color can be expressed more finely with more bits, continuous color changes can be more smoothly expressed. For the Deep Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Note: x.v. Color and Deep Color technology are supported only when source product, HDMI cable, media and HDTV all support those features.

A/V Sync: The audio output can be delayed so that the time gap between the audio output and the visual display is minimized. This is especially helpful when you are using a large LCD or plasma TV or a projection TV. When activated, the delay can be adjusted from 0 to 300ms (in 10 ms increments).

Front Panel AV Inputs: The STR-DN1010 features a set of front panel inputs with left and right RCA audio jacks and a RCA composite video jack.

Convenience Features

On-Screen Display: You can set-up and control the A/V receiver with its intuitive on-screen graphical user interface (GUI). The OSD will output through the receiver's HDMI output.

Input Naming: You can enter a name of up to 8 characters for each of the receiver's inputs (except Tuner) and display the name on its display. This is convenient for labeling the jacks with the names of your connected components.

Reassign Inputs: You can reassign audio and/or video signals to another input when they are not currently being used.

Auto Standby: Auto Standby lets you set the receiver switch to standby mode automatically after 30 minutes when you do not operate the receiver or when there is no signal input to the receiver.

Sleep Timer: The unit may be set to automatically turn off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

Dimmer: You can adjust the brightness of the display in 3 steps - Dim Max, Dim Mid, and Dim Off.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote (RM-AAP051) is pre-coded to control this Sony receiver, Sony TVs, Sony CD players, Sony DVD players and recorders, and Sony Blu-ray disc players and recorders. You can also program this remote to control non-Sony audio/video components. You can also change the initial settings of the input buttons on the remote control to suit the components in your system.

Bravia Theater Sync: Sony's Bravia Theater Sync feature allows you to easily manage select BRAVIA televisions and Sony HDMI audio and video components with a single remote. By connecting Sony components that are compatible with the HDMI Control function with a HDMI cable, operation is simplified in the following ways.

  • One-Touch-Play: When you playback a component such as a DVD/Blu-ray Disc Player, the receiver and the TV are turned on automatically and switch to the appropriate HDMI input.
  • System Audio Control: While watching TV, you can select to output the sound from the TV speaker or the speakers connected to the receiver.
  • System Power Off: When you turn off the TV, the receiver and connected components are also turned off simultaneously.
