Enjoy wireless music with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

By equipping the STR-DN1050 with built-in Wi-Fi, Sony ensures the quickest, easiest connection to your home network. Once you're connected, you'll free all those digital music files from your computer or network storage device. If you're an iTunes® user, Apple AirPlay makes it easy to stream all your digital tunes wirelessly from your networked computer, as well as an iPhone®, iPod touch® or iPad®. Want to satisfy your thirst for new music? Listen to free Internet radio stations from around the world with TuneIn, or let Pandora create a custom station just for you. Spotify® subscribers can play nearly any song they can think of using the app on their smartphone or tablet. The 'DN1050 also has built-in Bluetooth, so you can listen to audio from any app on your smartphone or tablet through your home theater speakers.

High-res audio

Other digital music options

Even without a networked computer, there are cool options for enjoying digital music with the STR-DN1050. There's a front-panel USB port for connecting an iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod®. Plug it in and control it with the receiver's remote, so you can listen to your digital music collection while your device charges. For Android™ users, there's a front-panel MHL port. It's an HDMI input that can take video, photos, and music from compatible phones and tablets and show them on the big screen and play them through your surround speakers. If you have any high-resolution downloads from sites like HDtracks, load them onto a compatible USB memory drive and plug it into the USB port. This receiver can play high-res recordings, including DSD files, for greater detail and depth than CDs can deliver.

Praise for the Sony STR-DN1050 AV Receiver from Sound & Vision

"The Sony STR-DN1050 is the best receiver I've ever heard selling for $600, and I've heard quite a few. ...This receiver has dynamics reminiscent of something much more expensive, perhaps even twice its price, along with a fine-tuned tonal balance that benefits anything you might listen to. A high-end-of-the-low-end champion, it is now my top recommendation at this price. "

Multi-zone audio and video

If you're content with 5.2-channel sound in your main listening room, the 'DN1050's extra speaker outputs can be used for a second room. Connect a set of stereo speakers to the "rear surround" outputs, and you can listen to music in the kitchen or bedroom while the rest of the family watches a movie in the main room. Better yet, with dual-zone HDMI switching, you can send video from two different sources to two different TVs simultaneously. The kids can watch a Blu-ray disc in the living room, while you watch the game on cable in your bedroom. There's even a third HDMI output for sending the Zone 1 signal to a second display, such as a projector or a second TV in the back of your home theater.

Customized sound, HD video upscaling, and app control

What else does this versatile receiver offer? Digital Cinema Auto Calibration configures your speakers for optimum sound. Just plug in the included setup microphone and follow the on-screen instructions for sound tailored to your room and speakers. Once you're set up, you'll enjoy pristine 1080p HD video quality, even from older sources like DVD players thanks to HD (and Ultra HD for new 4K TVs) upscaling. Thanks to built-in Wi-Fi, you have a special remote to control your system: your smartphone. Download Sony's free SongPal app to your Apple or Android device for easy Wi-Fi control of the receiver.

Quality Construction & Circuitry: Borrowing construction and circuitry design from Sony's ES line, it all begins with a rigid chassis based on the legendary frame and beam concept. To this structure, Sony then mounts the various components; a high capacity power transformer, custom heat sink, and other specially selected audio-grade components that together add up to high-quality sound performance.

Assignable 7-Channel Amplifier: The Sony STR-DN1050 AV receiver is equipped with a 7-channel amplifier rated at 100 watts (into 6-ohms, at 20-20khz, with 0.09% THD, driving 2 channels). The AV receiver's Surround Back/Front Height amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup.

    • Surround Back: Allows you to enjoy high-fidelity reproduction of Dolby Digital TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD (High-Resolution Audio or Master Audio) with 7.2 channel surround, using the Surround Back speaker channels.
    • Front Height: You can enjoy vertical sound effects if you connect two additional Front-Height speakers; no Surround Back speakers in this configuration.
    • B-Speakers: If you are only connecting a 5.2ch speaker system, you can use the Surround Back/Front Height/Front B/Zone 2 channels as a Speaker B output, allowing you to place a pair of speakers in another room of the house. Speaker B can be played at the same time of Speaker A, or by itself.
    • Zone 2: If you are only connecting a 5.2ch speaker system, you can use the Surround Back/Front Height/Front/Zone 2 channels as a Zone 2 output, allowing you to place a pair of speakers in another room of the house. Zone can be play the same source or a different source as your main zone.
    • Bi-Amp: If you are not using the Surround Back/Front Height/Front B/Zone 2 channels at all, you can connect them to your front speakers using a bi-amplifier connection (provides better sound quality for front speakers). A bi-amplification connection uses two amplifiers for one speaker. One amplifier is connected to the woofer section of a loudspeaker while the other is connected to the combined midrange and tweeter section. With this arrangement each amplifier operates over a limited frequency range, making its job easier.

Advanced Digital Cinema Auto Calibration (DCAC) w/ A.P.M (Automatic Phase Matching): The Sony STR-DN1050 is equipped with Advanced Digital Cinema Auto Calibration Technology which uses the included microphone to automatically check the speaker connections, adjust the speaker output levels, calculate the distance from each speaker to the listening position, check for phase, and distinguish frequency characteristics of each speaker. The microphone has an 15' cord attached that plugs into the microphone input on front of the receiver. You can select between three auto calibration modes.

    • Full Flat: Makes the measurement of frequency from each speaker flat.
    • Engineer: Sets to "the Sony listening room standard" frequency characteristics.
    • Front Reference: Adjusts the characteristics of all of the speakers to match the characteristics of the front
      speaker.
    • Off: No auto calibration is applied.
Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker settings.

Auto Format Direct (A.F.D.) Mode: The Auto Format Direct (A.F.D.) mode allows you to listen to high fidelity sound and select the decoding mode for listening to a 2-channel stereo sound as multi-channel. You can set the A.F.D. mode to Auto or Multi Stereo.

    • A.F.D. Auto: Presets the sound as it was recorded/encoded without adding any surround effects.
    • Multi Stereo: Outputs 2-channel left/right signals from all speakers.

Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic: The Sony STR-DN1050 AV receiver features Dolby Digital and DTS-HD decoding, as well as offers Dolby Pro Logic audio processing.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V preamplifier via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the AV receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

HD Digital Cinema Sound (HD D.C.S): HD Digital Cinema Sound (HD-D.C.S.) is Sony's new innovative home theater technology using the latest acoustic and digital signal processing technologies. It is based on precise response measurement data of a mastering studio. With this mode, you are able to enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies at home with not only the high quality of sound, but also the best sound ambience, just as the movie's sound engineer intended in the mastering process.

    • For Movies:
      • Dynamic: This setting is suitable for an environment which is reverberant but lacks a spacious feel (where sound absorption is not sufficient). It emphasizes the reflection of sound and reproduces the sound of a large, classic movie theater. This emphasizes the spacious feel of a dubbing theater and creates a unique acoustic field.
      • Theater: This setting is suitable for a general living room. It reproduces the reverberation of sound just like in a movie theater (dubbing theater). It is most appropriate for watching content recorded on a Blu-ray Disc when you want the atmosphere of a movie theater.
      • Studio: This setting is suitable for a living room with the appropriate sound devices. It reproduces the reverberation of sound provided when a theatrical sound source is remixed for a Blu-ray Disc to a volume level suitable for home use. The level of reflection and reverberation of sound is kept to a minimum, while dialogues and surround effects are reproduced vividly.
    • For Music:
      • Berlin Philharmonic: Reproduces the sound characteristics of the Berlin Philharmonic Hall
      • Concertgebouw Amsterdam: Reproduces the sound characteristics produced by the reflectivity of a concert hall in Amsterdam, Netherlands that features a large sound stage.
      • Musikverein Vienna: Reproduces the sound characteristics of a concert hall in Vienna, Austria that features a resonant and unique reverberative sound.
      • Jazz Club: Reproduces the acoustics of a jazz club.
      • Live Concert: Reproduces the acoustics of a 300-seat live house.
      • Stadium: Reproduces the feel of a large open-air stadium.
      • Sports: Reproduces the feel of sports broadcasting.
      • Portable Audio: Reproduces clear enhanced sound from your portable audio device. This mode is ideal for MP3s and other compressed music.

Direct Modes: The Sony AV receiver offers two Direct audio modes for higher fidelity sound.

    • Analog Direct: The receiver's Analog Direct mode outputs audio from only the front left and right speakers without any tone or DSP processing; only the volume and front speaker balance adjustments are active.
    • Pure Direct: To further enhance sound quality, the receiver's Pure Direct mode not only bypasses the tone and DSP processing, but also turns off the front-panel display to suppress any noise which may affect sound quality.

Headphone Modes: The receiver offers two distinct headphone sound modes.

    • HP 2CH: Sets the receiver to power only the front left and right speakers, no surround and no subwoofer. Two channel sources bypass the sound field processing and multi channel sources are down-mixed to 2 channels.
    • HP Direct: Amplifies the source without any processing, only the volume and front speaker balance adjustments are active.

Advanced Audio Settings: These advanced audio settings allow you to tailor the sound to your source content, listening conditions, and your personal preferences.

    • D.L.L. (Digital Legato Linear): The Digital Legato Linear function is a Sony proprietary technology that allows low quality digital audio signals and analog audio signal to be played back with high quality sound.
    • Sound Optimizer: The Sound Optimizer lets you enjoy clear and dynamic sound at low volume levels. It automatically calibrates the sound which cannot be heard well when you turn down the volume level. After Auto Calibration is performed, the sound level is optimized to suit your environment.
    • Dynamic Range Compressor: This feature allows you to compress the dynamic range of the sound track. You can select standard or maximum compression, or off (only works with Dolby Digital sources).
    • Auto Volume: Auto Volume adjust the volume automatically depending on the input signal or content from the connected equipment. This function is useful, for example, when the sound of a commercial is louder than the TV programs.
    • Center Lift Up: By using front high speakers, you can lift up the sounds of the center speaker to an appropriate height on the screen, allowing you to enjoy a more natural representation.
    • Equalizer: You can adjust the tonal quality (bass & treble level) of the front speakers from -6dB to +6dB, in 1dB steps.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Sony STR-DN1050 offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Digital Inputs: The receiver has two optical digital inputs and one coaxial digital inputs (all assignable). You can choose auto decoding or PCM for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel. All of the digital audio jacks are compatible with 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, and 96 kHz sampling frequencies.
    • Speaker Outputs: The receiver is equipped with binding post terminals for all speaker channels. The binding post terminals will accept bare wire, pin connectors, and banana plugs (single only). Use speakers with a 6- to 16-ohm impedance.
    • Dual Sub Outputs: The AV receiver is fitted with two subwoofer preamp outputs to connect dual powered subs (the subwoofer outputs share the same input signal and are not discrete).
    • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted. No sound is output from the headphones when an iPod or iPhone is connected to the receiver.
    Video Section

HDMI 2.0: The Sony STR-DN1050 is equipped with six HDMI v.2.0 inputs (5 rear/1 front) for connecting HDMI-equipped audio/video component; such as your satellite/cable receiver, Blu-ray/DVD player, and game system. In addition, there are two HDMI v.2.0 monitor outputs (ARC capable) that feed audio/video signals to up to two TVs. You can toggle or simultaneously output the same video between two displays, such as two televisions or a television plus a projector. There is also a third HDMI (v.2.0) Zone 2 output, so you can view a different audio/video source in another room of your home. The receiver's HDMI v.2.0 jacks are compatible with 4K/60Hz and  1080p video, 3D video signals, Deep Color & x.v.Color technology; as well as LipSync, ARC, and HDMI control.

    • 4K/60Hz Pass Through: 4K/60Hz Pass Through allows the Sony STR-DN1050 to receive ultra high-definition resolution video and pass the video signal to a 4K/60Hz compatible TV or display monitor.
    • 3D-Ready: The Sony STR-DN1050 is compatible with 3D-ready Blu-ray disc movies, video games, and other 3D content through its HDMI (v.1.4) connections. 3D viewing requires 3D-ready source with 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D glasses, and high-speed HDMI cable. Other 3D accessories may also be needed.
    • Deep/x.v.Color Support: The Sony AV receiver also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • A/V Sync: The audio output can be delayed so that the time gap between the audio output and the visual display is minimized. This is especially helpful when you are using a large LCD or plasma TV or a projection TV. When activated, the delay can be adjusted from 0-300 ms or set to Auto.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.
Note: The AV receiver's HDMI 2.0 jacks do not support the latest HDCP 2.2 copyright protection for 4K ultra-HD content, so it will not support 4K content from satellite/cable providers, online video services, and Blu-ray disc which are copyright protected with HDCP 2.2.

HDMI Upconvert/Upscale (4K): The Sony AV receiver's HDMI upconvert/upscale function improves image quality of non-4K sources to ultra-HD. Analog connected device signals (component/composite) are converted to digital, upscaled to 4K, and output via HDMI, making one cable connection from the receiver to your TV possible. 1080p HDMI input video signals are also upscaled to 4K. The HDMI Zone 2 output does not support upconversion or upscaling.

24p True Cinema Mode: The 24p True Cinema Mode allows you to watch movies at their native frame rate 24p format (24 frames per second) when paired with a 24p playback device like a Blu-ray Disc Player.

MHL Compatible: The receiver's front-panel HDMI 2 input and rear-panel HDMI 1 input are MHL compatible, which provides direct connection of MHL compatible smartphones. Playback of up to 1080p video and multi-channel audio from the phone is supported. The receiver will also charge your connected phone. Play, Stop, and other basic operations can be controlled from the AV receiver's remote control.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through feature conveniently allows you to access all your HDMI connected devices without having to power on the receiver.

Analog Video Inputs: The Sony STR-DN1050 features 2 component video inputs and a component video monitor output. These jacks feature an 80 MHz bandwidth, making them capable of passing high-definition video signals (up to 1080i). The receiver is also fitted with two analog composite video inputs and one composite video monitor output. The composite video jacks support 480i video signals only.

And now you can stream those same songs from your smartphone to the Sony STR-DN1050 by using Spotify Connect; simply hit play on the app to start streaming music. What's more, when you've been listening to Spotify on your smartphone outside and come inside, the song immediately begins to stream to the receiver for uninterrupted music enjoyment. You'll also be able to control basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip) using the receiver's remote control. Advanced music operation will still need to be handled from your Bluetooth-enable device. There is no song/artist information display on the receiver or connected TV. Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony receiver.

iPod/iPhone Connectivity: The STR-DN1050 AV receiver supports iPod, iPhone, and iPad connectivity via its front-panel USB port and HDMI input, as well as built-in AirPlay.

    • AirPlay: AirPlay lets you stream your favorite songs directly from your iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad, or from your iTunes library on your PC or Mac to the Sony STR-DN1050, over your home network connection. By downloading Apple's free Remote app onto your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad you don't even need to be in the same room as the components or your computer to play, pause, skip, and stop the songs in your iTunes music library. Convenience Features

Advanced On-Screen Menu w/ Setup Wizard (via HDMI): You can display the receiver's on-screen menu on your HDMI connected TV screen and select the function you want to use from the on-screen menu using the included IR remote control. You can easily access and manage your input devices and settings with this intuitive 5-panel "activity based" on-screen menu. The STR-DN1050 on-screen, set-up wizard will take you through everything you need to create and control your home theater experience. The on-screen menu is only available from the receiver's HDMI A and HDMI B outputs (not HDMI Zone 2 output). If your TV is connected to the composite video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.

Dual Source/Dual Zone: The Sony STR-DN1050 AV receiver allows you to enjoy the same or different audio/video sources in the two different rooms of your home. Zone 2 features line-level and speaker audio outputs. This way, Zone 2 can be powered by a separate amplifier (keeping 7.2ch playback in your main room) or by the STR-DN1050's built-in amplifier (limiting the main room to 5.2ch). The volume of Zone 2 can be controlled by the Sony receiver using either configuration or from your add-on integrated amplifier when using the line-output. The Sony AV receiver also provides a Zone 2 HDMI video output, so two different HDMI audio/video input feeds can be sent to two different displays at the same time directly from the receiver. HDMI Zone 2 will also output 2ch audio signals (multi-channel audio is downmixed) for the HDMI input source selected (volume controlled from secondary TV or additional receiver).

    • Compatible Zone Sources: Tuner, Analog, HDMI, USB, Bluetooth, Network, and Online Music input sources are supported in Zone 2. The same AM/FM station will be played back in the Main Zone and Zone 2. To playback USB, Network, or Online Music content in Zone 2, you must also have the same streaming source selected in the main zone.
    • Incompatible Zone Sources: Analog video, AirPlay, and Optical/Coaxial digital sources are not output to Zone 2.
Note: If you connect TVs that have different resolutions to the Main Zone and Zone 2, but select the same HDMI input for
both zones, the video signals output to each TV are limited to the lower resolution TV. When Zone 2 is enabled and you select the same HDMI input for both the Main Zone and Zone 2, there may be some interference to the audio/video signal in the main zone; to avoid possible interference, you can place priority on the Main Zone for HDMI input selection.

Custom Presets: The Sony AV receiver features 3 Custom Preset buttons (Movie, Music, Party) on the remote control to make operating the receiver easier. Pressing a Preset button will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button; such as powering on the receiver, switching to the appropriate source input, and recalling the selected DSP surround mode.

    • Custom Preset 1 (Movie): Pressing the Custom Preset 1 button turns on the receiver and lets you access a video source (default BD/DVD) with its saved soundfield (default HD-D.C.S).
    • Custom Preset 2 (Music): Pressing the Custom Preset 2 button turns on the receiver and lets you access an audio source (default SACD/CD) with its saved soundfield (default HD-D.C.S).
    • Custom Preset 3 (Party): Pressing the Custom Preset 3 button turns the AV receiver's Zone 2 on automatically and simultaneously plays the same music in Zone 2 as the main zone (regardless of source or input); volume level will be the same in both Zone.
Note: These buttons can also be reconfigured to automatically select other sources and soundfields.

Input Modes & Naming: When you connect components to both digital and analog audio input jacks on the receiver, you can fix the audio input mode to either of them, or switch from one to the other, depending on the type of material you intend to watch. You can enter a name of up to 8 characters for each of the receiver's inputs (except Tuner) and display the name on its display. This is convenient for labeling the jacks with the names of your connected components.

Sleep Timer: The unit may be set to automatically turn off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

Auto Standby: Auto Standby lets you set the receiver switch to standby mode automatically after 20 minutes when you do not operate the receiver or when there is no signal input to the receiver.

    Remote Control

IR Remote + Bravia Theater Sync: The supplied IR remote is pre-coded to control this Sony receiver, Sony TVs, Sony CD players, Sony DVD players and recorders, and Sony Blu-ray disc players and recorders.  Sony's Bravia Theater Sync feature allows you to easily manage select BRAVIA televisions and Sony HDMI audio and video components with a single remote. By connecting Sony components that are compatible with the HDMI Control function with a HDMI cable, operation is simplified in the following ways.

    • One-Touch-Play: When you playback a component such as a DVD/Blu-ray Disc Player, the receiver and the TV are turned on automatically and switch to the appropriate HDMI input.
    • System Audio Control: While watching TV, you can select to output the sound from the TV speaker or the speakers connected to the receiver.
    • System Power Off: When you turn off the TV, the receiver and connected components are also turned off simultaneously.
    • Theater Mode Sync: Allows you to switch the AV receiver's Theater mode from the receiver's, TV, or connected Blu-ray disc player's remote control, while pointing the remote toward your television.

SongPal Remote App: By downloading Sony's free SongPal remote app (from iTunes or Google Play), you can use your Apple iOS (6.0+) or Android (2.3+) device to control the AV receiver via Bluetooth or WiFi connection. From the SongPal remote app, you can select input sources and customize sound settings of the Sony AV receiver. You'll also be able to browse music stored on your Network, Computer, or a USB mass storage class device from the SongPal remote app on your compatible smartphone. You'll even be able to access the AV receiver's built-in online music services; like Pandora, TuneIn, and Music Unlimited. In addition, you can access stored music and other apps on your smartphone using the SongPal remote app. The SongPal app will display song/artist information and album art.

IR In/Out: The Sony AV receiver is equipped with a 3.5mm IR input/output which accepts IR repeater systems, enabling you to operate components connected to the receiver behind a closed door or controlling the receiver's Zone 2.

    Q
Does anyone have an idea of what the up-scaling is at and the pass through for 4K TV support? 30Hrz or 60Hrz? Passthrough is usually 60Hrz but it's also very important to get the up-scaling at 60Hrz instead of 30Hrz, it would be terrible!

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The 4K upscaling on that UHDTV is at 60 Hz. From the webpage: 4K/60Hz Pass Through: 4K/60Hz Pass Through allows the Sony STR-DN1050 to receive ultra high-definition resolution video and pass the video signal to a 4K/60Hz compatible TV or display monitor. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

I had the same situation, previous speakers. I have since added a TV. The Sony STR-1050 is a wonderful receiver! Easy to set up, powerful and works great with a wide range of speakers. You should have no problem, and will be able to add new speakers in the future if you wish to.
    clifton  Feb 19, 2015

It would depend on how the other speakers are setup. It can drive my 7.1 speakers directly. I also use the Zone 2 HDMI output to connect to my old AVR which I now have it my bedroom. That it turn can drive speakers. I normally use an HDMI input on the 1050 (CD/Blu-Ray, Apple TV, or Roku. I don't know if I have tried sending say a 2 channel audio input to Zone 2 to see if that works. I could try it but just haven't tested it. You might want to check the Sony 1050 forum on the AVSforum web site for any other comments on this issue.

Ok...Looking to buy a receiver that has the ability to run a zone 2 through speaker wires (patio speakers prewired from patio to receiver) and not have to use another amp (Sony STR-DN1040 has this problem). So, can the Sony STR-DN1050 handle this? Also, I've read that Sony receivers have been having issues with HDMI input and output to TV and not getting a picture. People have been having to run HDMI or RCA cables straight to TV and bypass the receiver. Does this issue apply to the STR-DN1050? Thank you in advance.

I have the unit for several months and I have not had any issues. The only problem I have had (self inflicted) was that I have my unit inside a entertainment center and the wi fi antenna is enclosed in the wood cabinet so the signal was weak. So I drilled a hole large enough for the antenna to stick out and the problem was solved and the firmware updates easily now.

No. I have not had any HDMI or firmware problems with this receiver. All of my equipment (TV and Blu-ray player), except for my Hooper DVR, is by Sony. Everything is hooked up to the receiver with HDMI cables and it all works flawlessly. But initially to make the HDMI work properly, I did have to go into the receiver "Settings" / "HDMI Setting" and turn the Control for HDMI "On" and Pass Through "On" because that was not the default for the receiver out of the box.

You may want to take a look at the dedicated forum for the 850/1050 at AVSforum (look it up, Crutchfield will not allow URL references) There are a number of users with the unit who are willing to share their experiences and offer help. I've had no problems with the hdmi or the firmware in my use with the unit. I've connected the following via hdmi: Oppo BDP-93, Samsung BD-UP5000, Sony BDP-S5100, Roku 3, Apple TV. Output to a Vizio M501d-A2R (used for both 2D and 3D). I've also connected composite TV from an older cable box (which the Sony upgrades to 1080p HDMI). I have also used the various HDMI inputs to my older amplifier via the Zone 2 HDMI output. Audio Return Channel (ARC) from the TV output HDMI also works. I had no problem with the unit upgrading to the latest firmware over the internet. I don't use Spotify myself but others report that it is not yet supported by the firmware. I would guess (note) that you are asking based on the user reviews online. I have not seen any other comments about HDMI issues at the AVSforum or in magazine reviews. (Though obviously I might have missed those). Regards, Mike H.

Unfortunately the STR-DN1050 does not have the blue multi-channel indicator light on the front panel. And yes it does indicate on the scroll messaging display when in the multi-channel mode!!

No, I only see a green light indicator. I see the multi channel indicator on the display screen.

The STR-DN1050 does not have the big blue light and speaker diagram of older Sony models (such as the DG-910 which it replaced). It does initially have a large scrolling display showing what it is receiving and decoding when the source format is changed (this is displayed for a few seconds). It also has a small led a the top of the display which lists the format which is being decoded (that is always on). I happen to have an Oppo BDP-93 which readily displays (via a button push) the format which is being sent from the Blu-ray player to the receiver, so if I have any questions about what sound format I have selected I usually just use that. I have never encountered an instance where the STR-DN1050 has not properly interpreted/decoded the sound format sent to it. I must admit that I liked the old style where one could just glance at the receiver from across the room to ensure that the blue light was on, but I am not greatly inconvenienced by the new arrangement. I appreciate the extra features of the STR-DN1050.

    Q
Hi I have an old Sony that has zone A &B that you can either listen to zone A or B alone or together. Can this product do the same? Mine is dying and Need 7.2 now. If not can anyone suggest one that does have this option or what to do? Thanks

Can the 1050 send the same signal simultaneously to more than one HDMI output?

Yes. It works with the HDMI with Zone2.

I have not tried this so I can't say for sure but based on the example shown on page 172 of the Sony's help guide (that is available online), it appears that the STR-DN1050 could do that since it has multiple HDMI outputs.
