Take home theater beyond family movie night

If you think home theater is just about watching movies in your TV room, then check out the many features found in the Sony STR-DN1050. In addition to powering your surround speakers, it also offers wireless capability for streaming music from computers and smartphones. There are built-in digital music options like Pandora® Internet radio. The seven-channel amplifier can be configured for several setup options, including playback through stereo speakers in a second room. And there are three HDMI outputs along with dual-zone capability for watching two different movies in separate rooms simultaneously. Pretty impressive for such an affordable receiver.

Enjoy wireless music with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

By equipping the STR-DN1050 with built-in Wi-Fi, Sony ensures the quickest, easiest connection to your home network. Once you're connected, you'll free all those digital music files from your computer or network storage device. If you're an iTunes® user, Apple AirPlay makes it easy to stream all your digital tunes wirelessly from your networked computer, as well as an iPhone®, iPod touch® or iPad®. Want to satisfy your thirst for new music? Listen to free Internet radio stations from around the world with TuneIn, or let Pandora create a custom station just for you. Spotify® subscribers can play nearly any song they can think of using the app on their smartphone or tablet. The 'DN1050 also has built-in Bluetooth, so you can listen to audio from any app on your smartphone or tablet through your home theater speakers.

High-res audio

Other digital music options

Even without a networked computer, there are cool options for enjoying digital music with the STR-DN1050. There's a front-panel USB port for connecting an iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod®. Plug it in and control it with the receiver's remote, so you can listen to your digital music collection while your device charges. For Android™ users, there's a front-panel MHL port. It's an HDMI input that can take video, photos, and music from compatible phones and tablets and show them on the big screen and play them through your surround speakers. If you have any high-resolution downloads from sites like HDtracks, load them onto a compatible USB memory drive and plug it into the USB port. This receiver can play high-res recordings, including DSD files, for greater detail and depth than CDs can deliver.

Praise for the Sony STR-DN1050 AV Receiver from Sound & Vision

"The Sony STR-DN1050 is the best receiver I've ever heard selling for $600, and I've heard quite a few. ...This receiver has dynamics reminiscent of something much more expensive, perhaps even twice its price, along with a fine-tuned tonal balance that benefits anything you might listen to. A high-end-of-the-low-end champion, it is now my top recommendation at this price. "

Multi-zone audio and video

If you're content with 5.2-channel sound in your main listening room, the 'DN1050's extra speaker outputs can be used for a second room. Connect a set of stereo speakers to the "rear surround" outputs, and you can listen to music in the kitchen or bedroom while the rest of the family watches a movie in the main room. Better yet, with dual-zone HDMI switching, you can send video from two different sources to two different TVs simultaneously. The kids can watch a Blu-ray disc in the living room, while you watch the game on cable in your bedroom. There's even a third HDMI output for sending the Zone 1 signal to a second display, such as a projector or a second TV in the back of your home theater.

Customized sound, HD video upscaling, and app control

What else does this versatile receiver offer? Digital Cinema Auto Calibration configures your speakers for optimum sound. Just plug in the included setup microphone and follow the on-screen instructions for sound tailored to your room and speakers. Once you're set up, you'll enjoy pristine 1080p HD video quality, even from older sources like DVD players thanks to HD (and Ultra HD for new 4K TVs) upscaling. Thanks to built-in Wi-Fi, you have a special remote to control your system: your smartphone. Download Sony's free SongPal app to your Apple or Android device for easy Wi-Fi control of the receiver.

Quality Construction & Circuitry: Borrowing construction and circuitry design from Sony's ES line, it all begins with a rigid chassis based on the legendary frame and beam concept. To this structure, Sony then mounts the various components; a high capacity power transformer, custom heat sink, and other specially selected audio-grade components that together add up to high-quality sound performance.

Assignable 7-Channel Amplifier: The Sony STR-DN1050 AV receiver is equipped with a 7-channel amplifier rated at 100 watts (into 6-ohms, at 20-20khz, with 0.09% THD, driving 2 channels). The AV receiver's Surround Back/Front Height amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup.

    • Surround Back: Allows you to enjoy high-fidelity reproduction of Dolby Digital TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD (High-Resolution Audio or Master Audio) with 7.2 channel surround, using the Surround Back speaker channels.
    • Front Height: You can enjoy vertical sound effects if you connect two additional Front-Height speakers; no Surround Back speakers in this configuration.
    • B-Speakers: If you are only connecting a 5.2ch speaker system, you can use the Surround Back/Front Height/Front B/Zone 2 channels as a Speaker B output, allowing you to place a pair of speakers in another room of the house. Speaker B can be played at the same time of Speaker A, or by itself.
    • Zone 2: If you are only connecting a 5.2ch speaker system, you can use the Surround Back/Front Height/Front/Zone 2 channels as a Zone 2 output, allowing you to place a pair of speakers in another room of the house. Zone can be play the same source or a different source as your main zone.
    • Bi-Amp: If you are not using the Surround Back/Front Height/Front B/Zone 2 channels at all, you can connect them to your front speakers using a bi-amplifier connection (provides better sound quality for front speakers). A bi-amplification connection uses two amplifiers for one speaker. One amplifier is connected to the woofer section of a loudspeaker while the other is connected to the combined midrange and tweeter section. With this arrangement each amplifier operates over a limited frequency range, making its job easier.

Advanced Digital Cinema Auto Calibration (DCAC) w/ A.P.M (Automatic Phase Matching): The Sony STR-DN1050 is equipped with Advanced Digital Cinema Auto Calibration Technology which uses the included microphone to automatically check the speaker connections, adjust the speaker output levels, calculate the distance from each speaker to the listening position, check for phase, and distinguish frequency characteristics of each speaker. The microphone has an 15' cord attached that plugs into the microphone input on front of the receiver. You can select between three auto calibration modes.

    • Full Flat: Makes the measurement of frequency from each speaker flat.
    • Engineer: Sets to "the Sony listening room standard" frequency characteristics.
    • Front Reference: Adjusts the characteristics of all of the speakers to match the characteristics of the front
    • Off: No auto calibration is applied.
Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker settings.

Auto Format Direct (A.F.D.) Mode: The Auto Format Direct (A.F.D.) mode allows you to listen to high fidelity sound and select the decoding mode for listening to a 2-channel stereo sound as multi-channel. You can set the A.F.D. mode to Auto or Multi Stereo.

    • A.F.D. Auto: Presets the sound as it was recorded/encoded without adding any surround effects.
    • Multi Stereo: Outputs 2-channel left/right signals from all speakers.

Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic: The Sony STR-DN1050 AV receiver features Dolby Digital and DTS-HD decoding, as well as offers Dolby Pro Logic audio processing.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V preamplifier via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the AV receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

HD Digital Cinema Sound (HD D.C.S): HD Digital Cinema Sound (HD-D.C.S.) is Sony's new innovative home theater technology using the latest acoustic and digital signal processing technologies. It is based on precise response measurement data of a mastering studio. With this mode, you are able to enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies at home with not only the high quality of sound, but also the best sound ambience, just as the movie's sound engineer intended in the mastering process.

    • For Movies:
      • Dynamic: This setting is suitable for an environment which is reverberant but lacks a spacious feel (where sound absorption is not sufficient). It emphasizes the reflection of sound and reproduces the sound of a large, classic movie theater. This emphasizes the spacious feel of a dubbing theater and creates a unique acoustic field.
      • Theater: This setting is suitable for a general living room. It reproduces the reverberation of sound just like in a movie theater (dubbing theater). It is most appropriate for watching content recorded on a Blu-ray Disc when you want the atmosphere of a movie theater.
      • Studio: This setting is suitable for a living room with the appropriate sound devices. It reproduces the reverberation of sound provided when a theatrical sound source is remixed for a Blu-ray Disc to a volume level suitable for home use. The level of reflection and reverberation of sound is kept to a minimum, while dialogues and surround effects are reproduced vividly.
    • For Music:
      • Berlin Philharmonic: Reproduces the sound characteristics of the Berlin Philharmonic Hall
      • Concertgebouw Amsterdam: Reproduces the sound characteristics produced by the reflectivity of a concert hall in Amsterdam, Netherlands that features a large sound stage.
      • Musikverein Vienna: Reproduces the sound characteristics of a concert hall in Vienna, Austria that features a resonant and unique reverberative sound.
      • Jazz Club: Reproduces the acoustics of a jazz club.
      • Live Concert: Reproduces the acoustics of a 300-seat live house.
      • Stadium: Reproduces the feel of a large open-air stadium.
      • Sports: Reproduces the feel of sports broadcasting.
      • Portable Audio: Reproduces clear enhanced sound from your portable audio device. This mode is ideal for MP3s and other compressed music.

Direct Modes: The Sony AV receiver offers two Direct audio modes for higher fidelity sound.

    • Analog Direct: The receiver's Analog Direct mode outputs audio from only the front left and right speakers without any tone or DSP processing; only the volume and front speaker balance adjustments are active.
    • Pure Direct: To further enhance sound quality, the receiver's Pure Direct mode not only bypasses the tone and DSP processing, but also turns off the front-panel display to suppress any noise which may affect sound quality.

Headphone Modes: The receiver offers two distinct headphone sound modes.

    • HP 2CH: Sets the receiver to power only the front left and right speakers, no surround and no subwoofer. Two channel sources bypass the sound field processing and multi channel sources are down-mixed to 2 channels.
    • HP Direct: Amplifies the source without any processing, only the volume and front speaker balance adjustments are active.

Advanced Audio Settings: These advanced audio settings allow you to tailor the sound to your source content, listening conditions, and your personal preferences.

    • D.L.L. (Digital Legato Linear): The Digital Legato Linear function is a Sony proprietary technology that allows low quality digital audio signals and analog audio signal to be played back with high quality sound.
    • Sound Optimizer: The Sound Optimizer lets you enjoy clear and dynamic sound at low volume levels. It automatically calibrates the sound which cannot be heard well when you turn down the volume level. After Auto Calibration is performed, the sound level is optimized to suit your environment.
    • Dynamic Range Compressor: This feature allows you to compress the dynamic range of the sound track. You can select standard or maximum compression, or off (only works with Dolby Digital sources).
    • Auto Volume: Auto Volume adjust the volume automatically depending on the input signal or content from the connected equipment. This function is useful, for example, when the sound of a commercial is louder than the TV programs.
    • Center Lift Up: By using front high speakers, you can lift up the sounds of the center speaker to an appropriate height on the screen, allowing you to enjoy a more natural representation.
    • Equalizer: You can adjust the tonal quality (bass & treble level) of the front speakers from -6dB to +6dB, in 1dB steps.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Sony STR-DN1050 offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Digital Inputs: The receiver has two optical digital inputs and one coaxial digital inputs (all assignable). You can choose auto decoding or PCM for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel. All of the digital audio jacks are compatible with 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, and 96 kHz sampling frequencies.
    • Speaker Outputs: The receiver is equipped with binding post terminals for all speaker channels. The binding post terminals will accept bare wire, pin connectors, and banana plugs (single only). Use speakers with a 6- to 16-ohm impedance.
    • Dual Sub Outputs: The AV receiver is fitted with two subwoofer preamp outputs to connect dual powered subs (the subwoofer outputs share the same input signal and are not discrete).
    • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted. No sound is output from the headphones when an iPod or iPhone is connected to the receiver.

    Video Section

HDMI 2.0: The Sony STR-DN1050 is equipped with six HDMI v.2.0 inputs (5 rear/1 front) for connecting HDMI-equipped audio/video component; such as your satellite/cable receiver, Blu-ray/DVD player, and game system. In addition, there are two HDMI v.2.0 monitor outputs (ARC capable) that feed audio/video signals to up to two TVs. You can toggle or simultaneously output the same video between two displays, such as two televisions or a television plus a projector. There is also a third HDMI (v.2.0) Zone 2 output, so you can view a different audio/video source in another room of your home. The receiver's HDMI v.2.0 jacks are compatible with 4K/60Hz and  1080p video, 3D video signals, Deep Color & x.v.Color technology; as well as LipSync, ARC, and HDMI control.

    • 4K/60Hz Pass Through: 4K/60Hz Pass Through allows the Sony STR-DN1050 to receive ultra high-definition resolution video and pass the video signal to a 4K/60Hz compatible TV or display monitor.
    • 3D-Ready: The Sony STR-DN1050 is compatible with 3D-ready Blu-ray disc movies, video games, and other 3D content through its HDMI (v.1.4) connections. 3D viewing requires 3D-ready source with 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D glasses, and high-speed HDMI cable. Other 3D accessories may also be needed.
    • Deep/x.v.Color Support: The Sony AV receiver also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • A/V Sync: The audio output can be delayed so that the time gap between the audio output and the visual display is minimized. This is especially helpful when you are using a large LCD or plasma TV or a projection TV. When activated, the delay can be adjusted from 0-300 ms or set to Auto.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.
Note: The AV receiver's HDMI 2.0 jacks do not support the latest HDCP 2.2 copyright protection for 4K ultra-HD content, so it will not support 4K content from satellite/cable providers, online video services, and Blu-ray disc which are copyright protected with HDCP 2.2.

HDMI Upconvert/Upscale (4K): The Sony AV receiver's HDMI upconvert/upscale function improves image quality of non-4K sources to ultra-HD. Analog connected device signals (component/composite) are converted to digital, upscaled to 4K, and output via HDMI, making one cable connection from the receiver to your TV possible. 1080p HDMI input video signals are also upscaled to 4K. The HDMI Zone 2 output does not support upconversion or upscaling.

24p True Cinema Mode: The 24p True Cinema Mode allows you to watch movies at their native frame rate 24p format (24 frames per second) when paired with a 24p playback device like a Blu-ray Disc Player.

MHL Compatible: The receiver's front-panel HDMI 2 input and rear-panel HDMI 1 input are MHL compatible, which provides direct connection of MHL compatible smartphones. Playback of up to 1080p video and multi-channel audio from the phone is supported. The receiver will also charge your connected phone. Play, Stop, and other basic operations can be controlled from the AV receiver's remote control.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through feature conveniently allows you to access all your HDMI connected devices without having to power on the receiver.

Analog Video Inputs: The Sony STR-DN1050 features 2 component video inputs and a component video monitor output. These jacks feature an 80 MHz bandwidth, making them capable of passing high-definition video signals (up to 1080i). The receiver is also fitted with two analog composite video inputs and one composite video monitor output. The composite video jacks support 480i video signals only.

    Convenience Features

Advanced On-Screen Menu w/ Setup Wizard (via HDMI): You can display the receiver's on-screen menu on your HDMI connected TV screen and select the function you want to use from the on-screen menu using the included IR remote control. You can easily access and manage your input devices and settings with this intuitive 5-panel "activity based" on-screen menu. The STR-DN1050 on-screen, set-up wizard will take you through everything you need to create and control your home theater experience. The on-screen menu is only available from the receiver's HDMI A and HDMI B outputs (not HDMI Zone 2 output). If your TV is connected to the composite video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.

Dual Source/Dual Zone: The Sony STR-DN1050 AV receiver allows you to enjoy the same or different audio/video sources in the two different rooms of your home. Zone 2 features line-level and speaker audio outputs. This way, Zone 2 can be powered by a separate amplifier (keeping 7.2ch playback in your main room) or by the STR-DN1050's built-in amplifier (limiting the main room to 5.2ch). The volume of Zone 2 can be controlled by the Sony receiver using either configuration or from your add-on integrated amplifier when using the line-output. The Sony AV receiver also provides a Zone 2 HDMI video output, so two different HDMI audio/video input feeds can be sent to two different displays at the same time directly from the receiver. HDMI Zone 2 will also output 2ch audio signals (multi-channel audio is downmixed) for the HDMI input source selected (volume controlled from secondary TV or additional receiver).

    • Compatible Zone Sources: Tuner, Analog, HDMI, USB, Bluetooth, Network, and Online Music input sources are supported in Zone 2. The same AM/FM station will be played back in the Main Zone and Zone 2. To playback USB, Network, or Online Music content in Zone 2, you must also have the same streaming source selected in the main zone.
    • Incompatible Zone Sources: Analog video, AirPlay, and Optical/Coaxial digital sources are not output to Zone 2.
Note: If you connect TVs that have different resolutions to the Main Zone and Zone 2, but select the same HDMI input for
both zones, the video signals output to each TV are limited to the lower resolution TV. When Zone 2 is enabled and you select the same HDMI input for both the Main Zone and Zone 2, there may be some interference to the audio/video signal in the main zone; to avoid possible interference, you can place priority on the Main Zone for HDMI input selection.

Custom Presets: The Sony AV receiver features 3 Custom Preset buttons (Movie, Music, Party) on the remote control to make operating the receiver easier. Pressing a Preset button will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button; such as powering on the receiver, switching to the appropriate source input, and recalling the selected DSP surround mode.

    • Custom Preset 1 (Movie): Pressing the Custom Preset 1 button turns on the receiver and lets you access a video source (default BD/DVD) with its saved soundfield (default HD-D.C.S).
    • Custom Preset 2 (Music): Pressing the Custom Preset 2 button turns on the receiver and lets you access an audio source (default SACD/CD) with its saved soundfield (default HD-D.C.S).
    • Custom Preset 3 (Party): Pressing the Custom Preset 3 button turns the AV receiver's Zone 2 on automatically and simultaneously plays the same music in Zone 2 as the main zone (regardless of source or input); volume level will be the same in both Zone.
Note: These buttons can also be reconfigured to automatically select other sources and soundfields.

Input Modes & Naming: When you connect components to both digital and analog audio input jacks on the receiver, you can fix the audio input mode to either of them, or switch from one to the other, depending on the type of material you intend to watch. You can enter a name of up to 8 characters for each of the receiver's inputs (except Tuner) and display the name on its display. This is convenient for labeling the jacks with the names of your connected components.

Sleep Timer: The unit may be set to automatically turn off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

Auto Standby: Auto Standby lets you set the receiver switch to standby mode automatically after 20 minutes when you do not operate the receiver or when there is no signal input to the receiver.

    Remote Control

IR Remote + Bravia Theater Sync: The supplied IR remote is pre-coded to control this Sony receiver, Sony TVs, Sony CD players, Sony DVD players and recorders, and Sony Blu-ray disc players and recorders.  Sony's Bravia Theater Sync feature allows you to easily manage select BRAVIA televisions and Sony HDMI audio and video components with a single remote. By connecting Sony components that are compatible with the HDMI Control function with a HDMI cable, operation is simplified in the following ways.

    • One-Touch-Play: When you playback a component such as a DVD/Blu-ray Disc Player, the receiver and the TV are turned on automatically and switch to the appropriate HDMI input.
    • System Audio Control: While watching TV, you can select to output the sound from the TV speaker or the speakers connected to the receiver.
    • System Power Off: When you turn off the TV, the receiver and connected components are also turned off simultaneously.
    • Theater Mode Sync: Allows you to switch the AV receiver's Theater mode from the receiver's, TV, or connected Blu-ray disc player's remote control, while pointing the remote toward your television.

SongPal Remote App: By downloading Sony's free SongPal remote app (from iTunes or Google Play), you can use your Apple iOS (6.0+) or Android (2.3+) device to control the AV receiver via Bluetooth or WiFi connection. From the SongPal remote app, you can select input sources and customize sound settings of the Sony AV receiver. You'll also be able to browse music stored on your Network, Computer, or a USB mass storage class device from the SongPal remote app on your compatible smartphone. You'll even be able to access the AV receiver's built-in online music services; like Pandora, TuneIn, and Music Unlimited. In addition, you can access stored music and other apps on your smartphone using the SongPal remote app. The SongPal app will display song/artist information and album art.

IR In/Out: The Sony AV receiver is equipped with a 3.5mm IR input/output which accepts IR repeater systems, enabling you to operate components connected to the receiver behind a closed door or controlling the receiver's Zone 2.

    Requires HDMI connection to TV

Written By Darius, New York on Saturday, March 28, 2015

This may be a great unit. But if you don't have an HDMI capable TV, you won't be able to use it. Well, some, sure. The problem is that Sony has "dumbed down" the remote (certainly compared to an earlier home theater receiver of theirs that I owned for many years). If you want to set anything up on the receiver, you have to go into a setup mode that displays only on your TV and only Through The HDMI Connection. So if like me, you have only have component connections on your TV and no HDMI (I know, right, what's wrong with me? I bought a top of the line Sony TV 10 years ago that is still great) you can't see anything. Want to use the microphone to balance the speaker output? Can't. Want to set your tuner presets? Can't. (Here's the kicker, the remote can be used to hop between tuner preset stations - but you don't have any! and there is no "tune" knob on the unit). Want to hook up your component-connection DVD player? Can't. Want to reassign inputs to make wonderful stuff happen? Can't. Want to configure your connect to the internet to download an update? Can't. Want to connect with your bluetooth smartphone and all that? Can't. You can't see the menu on the TV unless you have connected to the TV with HDMI. I'm disappointed this isn't mentioned anywhere, not even at the premier electronics purchasing site you are viewing right now.

Pros: Probably has a lot of great featuers Sounds seems good

Cons: Requires HDMI TV connection to do any setup or configuration

Excellent Receiver and plenty of power! I now have the Zone capabilities I was hoping for. Although not intuitive, I did have to call tech support and they saved the day. Thanks!

Pros: Great Price! Easy to operate. I really like the HOME button, you can do everything from there.

Cons: Haven't run across any yet.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Exceeded my expectations! I was hesitant to purchase this product because the help guide stated that WMA lossless format cannot be played. Not true. WMA lossless streams from my PC to the Sony wirelessly with no problem. Sound is greatly improved (using same speakers) compared to my 10+ year old Onkyo TX-SR600 that I replaced. Probably because the speaker auto-calibration works so well. Love having only 1 HDMI cable running to my TV (old Onkyo didn't have HDMI I/O). Much easier to switch video inputs with this unit.

Pros: Streams WMA lossless, FLAC and MP3 from home network. Zone 2 speakers for playing outside. Sound is great.

Cons: User manual isn't great. Would like to be able to see signal strength of the wireless connection.

    4 months til failure

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked great for 4 months, now the network has failed. So no AirPlay or DLNA music, in settings when any attempt to correct settings when you highlight network, this message appears, "Not available. Please wait for the network to be ready to set up". Both wired and wireless it still won't recognize my home network though everything else still does. When it did work it was nice. The 4k up conversion works well with the Sony TV and blueray..tuner fm is not sensitive am is. Bluetooth pairing is a daily occurrence now if I want to hear AirPlay music over it..can't remember devices's a buggy little device that can't seem to remember Internet or Bluetooth settings or maybe it's a board failure...just torques me off to end. I thought at this price it was a great I'm thinking, you get what you pay for.

Pros: Worked great, but now it's just a TV and tuner amplifier.

Cons: OMG, SONY is a complete waste in customer service.. The repair phone number doesn't have a repair option just wants to sell me another? The Online repair page doesn't accept STR-DN1050 as a model number, so I'm totally without any type of repair option... Except maybe that 5 pound sledgehammer. As a note when my Denon went south, this was its replacement, I found a authorized repair center for it on line and they had a new replacement back in three weeks. No hassle no arguments.

    Cons: Not HDCP 2.2-compliant

Completely Excellent The New Modern Standard

Written By BADGERBKR, Milwaukee on Wednesday, February 11, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a receiver that could power two zones, had wifi built in, and was completely compatible with Apple. I tried the Denon AVR-X4000 In Command, and the Onxyo TX-NR828. The Denon completely failed and could not handle a 7.1 speaker load plus 2 zones. The protection circuit kept tripping. I actually returned one as defective, and then they sent me a new x4000 that did the same thing. Then I tried the Onkyo. The Onkyo is a great machine. It is well built, has built in wifi- it is a solid, heavy piece of machinery. It had excellent sound and video. I felt like it would last forever. Its fatal flaw was that it was not Apple compatible through Air Play, nor USB. That left only Bluetooth, which wasn't compatible with me. Of all 3 the Sony does everything and sounds the best. Its a computer and a receiver. It's easy to use, easy to set up and the presets that it offers are sophisticated enough to use and feel like you are not missing anything. Its got guts, sleek design, great sound, and its easy to use. Apple and Sony are like peas and carrots. This is hands down the best in class.

Pros: Lowest price of its competitors and its better. Apple compatible, great sound, great video, easy to use, great interface.

Cons: I haven't figured out if I can control it with a iPhone. Other than that, its perfect. It probably wont last as long as the Onkyo, but I have the feeling technology will make me want to upgrade before it dies.

    Perfect purchase

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love it. I did tons of research before buying and I have never had anything but Onkyo A/V receivers in the past. Despite many of the reviews I read, it was incredibly easy to setup and is very intuitive if you have had a receiver before. The GUI is second to none. The wifi, bluetooth and Airplay connected without a hitch and work flawlessly. The sound is great, plenty of power. Everything running through it looks and sounds better than ever. The remote is fine, less is more in my opinion. I have not set up a Zone 2, so I cannot speak to that. I have had no issues so far and I am extremely satisfied with my purchase.

Pros: Tons of technology for a great price Ease of setup Ease of use

    Cons: None so far

I purchased this receiver because of the top reviews it received on CNET and I'm not dissapointed.

Pros: Sound quality, design quality, features like pandora, all the USB ports and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capability.

Cons: Not many apps. I'd really like if they had apps like HBOGO and Netflix available. A little bulky.

The receiver was simple to set up and optimize. WiFi configured easily and is controlled by my iPhone allowing me to have the unit behind closed doors. Have not configured or used the second audio program as of yet.

    Cons: None yet

    Excellent Sound......but

Written By Albert, New Jersey on Thursday, January 08, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very pleased with the sound and enriched features like Wi fi and Bluetooth. However there is no manual and it was very difficult to set up. I called the Sony helpline was given a case number and they said I would get a call back within 24 hours. Well it's now 12 days since that call and they never got back to me. After spending about 12 hours over 3 days I was able to figure it out. The Sony website has information to facilitate the set up however it is not written very well and is confusing. They should at minimum have a concise manual with the important set up information in the box. If not for this it would have been 5 stars.

Pros: Sound, Wi fi, Bluetooth, 2 Zones, Simple remote, numerous features that I will likely not use

Cons: No manual, poor on line info, non existent customer service help from Sony

    Great price and features

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver to upgrade from a very outdated receiver with no HDMI inputs at all. The on-screen setup guide was great and posed no issue to me, however, I could see it being a downfall if you do not have a TV hooked up to it and plan to use it solely for audio. For the average user, the setup guide was adequate, however, if you are more knowledgeable it may be irritating and require a read through of the full manual as opposed to the quick set up guide included in the box. All of the inputs are easily accessible from the very simple remote control. The volume is at the bottom of the control, which is kind of strange if you are used to most remotes which place the volume at the center, but it was not a deal breaker for me. Buttons are clearly marked, and match up exactly to the inputs on the rear of the receiver. The only issue I have had so far is connecting to Apple AirPlay. There is no clearly marked button or menu option for airplay, you just have to enable it on your handheld device and hope it connects. I don't quite see the point in having AirPlay versus using Bluetooth. The front of the receiver is very streamlined and simple. with two knobs to control the input and volume. It is larger than my previous receiver but not unreasonably so. It's very light for such a large piece of equipment as well. I would recommend this to an average user, but am not knowledgeable enough to say if it would work for a serious audio person.

Pros: Great price Tons of input options Clearly labeled inputs Clearly labeled, simple remote

Cons: Strangely configured buttons on remote Must have TV connected to view audio options No AirPlay selection on remote or on-screen

    Very Satisfied

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit has great sound. Set up was straightforward and simple, with ample number of hdmi ports and easy to follow instructions. The onscreen menu is easy to learn and navigate. Only issue I have encountered is that the setup for sending different output to zone 2 speakers is a bit obscure. Otherwise everything has been a breeze.

    Pros: Great sound.

Cons: Independent Zone 2 controls are difficult to find.

    Setup clumsy & inadequate information

Written By Dca, California on Friday, January 02, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

No sound or video when it was installed & first turned on; had to call tech support who had me "Clear" a brand new device. After that, the "Easy Setup" didn't come on automatically so had to be done manually. Still trying to get Pandora working - on my previous receivers it was a simple signin with my account directly from the device. Selecting music from my NAS is a real pain - no way to quickly select a title or composer...simply an ancient interface which requires holding the forward or back buttons down...and the receiver scrolls very slowly. This one will likely be returned.

Pros: Reasonable price & sound. Crutchfield offers 60-day returns.

Cons: Out of box experience is terrible. Inadequate information in the box & online; remote too simple; setup antiquated - esp. the multi-step process for setting up internet music - e.g. Pandora. Selecting a title from a DLNA device requires long scrolls since there is no fast forward (also can't simply enter the first character[s] of a title or composer).

I bought the Bravia 65" 4K 3D HDTV. Top of the line at this moment in history. The problem, I was connected to an "older AV receiver". So I took the plunge. I'm glad I did. I finally know what outstanding sound quality is. Sure, you can save a few dollars and get an earlier model that might do the job, but this unit is good to go for at least a decade.

Cons: Needs an update to help with wireless music playing.

    Very Satisfied

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This home receiver has met and perhaps exceeded my expectations. I replaced a fairly old receiver that I thought was an excellent performer but the Sony is hands down better in all respects except one, that being my old receiver came with a very helpful "hard" copy instruction manual. While the Sony does have very helpful GUI instructions that are accessible via the remote it just hits the high spots. You have to go to the Sony website to dig deeper and even then it seems a little lacking. That being said the sound this unit generates is great. I have a Boise surround system and it has never sounded better. The WiFi works as advertised. Sony recommends that you attach the system directly to the router but I use the WiFi with no problems. My router is located in a second floor room quite a ways from the unit and it works just fine. I haven't tried to use Pandora but iTunes works great. I have a Sony TV & Blue-Ray and they do sinc via the TV remote although it is not as easy to use as Sony would lead you to believe. Again a good manual would be very helpful. Many thanks to the folks at Crutchfield for answering my questions and offering recommendations. They get five stars.

Pros: Excellent sound quality. Ease of operation. Great value for the money.

Cons: No hard copy instruction manual. (the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars)

    Worked great until it died

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just got a 4k TV and bought this to replace an old Yamaha receiver. This receiver was a breeze to set up, and the sound from the speakers was a huge improvement. Picture on new 4k TV was amazing, and dual HDMI outputs to a second TV a huge bonus - no more splitter! Everything great until half way through first Blu Ray movie when sound a picture suddenly went out. Discovered received had spontaneously switched to Bluetooth. Receiver then stopped responding to remote or to manual controls and started erratically switching inputs. Could not even turn it off without unplugging it. Plugged it back in the next morning - doing the same thing. Ended up returning it for a refund. Back to using the old Yamaha.

Pros: Easy set up. Dual HDMI out. Great sound. Unit it very slim from front to back - definite bonus if you are putting it on a shallow shelf.

Cons: My unit abruptly died less than 2 weeks after purchase.

    Sony STR-DN1050 vs Pioneer Vsx-1124

Written By bearclaw, New York on Thursday, December 18, 2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Pioneer Vsx-1124 and it sounded great through my speakers but the sound was not good through the headphone jack (uneven volume and veiled sound). A headphone amp did not fix this so I purchased the Sony STR-DN1050 to compare them both. Before the Sony arrived I discovered that I could connect my headphone amp to the Pioneer through the pre-outs. This bypassed the headphone jack and circuitry. I now had full control of the sound using the different listening modes and it sounded Amazing! I knew the Sony would have it's work cut out for it when it arrived. I read all the same great reviews that you probably have of the Sony 1050. I have to say that I am quite disappointed with it. The sound it puts out is nowhere even close to the pioneer 1124. The Sony puts out some bass but it is muddy and not very enjoyable. The mids are a bit overwhelmed by the bass and the highs, while more pronounced than the Pioneer, were less airy, more exaggerated, and a bit harsh. I went through all the settings in the menu but to no avail. There is no covering up the fact that the sound was punched up past the receivers actual ability to render the sound cleanly. Switching back to the Pioneer I was again amazed by the sound. It sounds like it costs 3x as much as the Sony. More bass, lower bass, better defined bass, more natural vocals, nicer airy highs. The machine just sounds awesome. I appreciate it even more now that i have heard the Sony STR-DN1050 and promptly returned it.

Pros: Great onscreen menu easy to use good looks/feel

Cons: not very adjustable no pre-outs Zone 2 sound barely audible (amped of course) Have you heard the Pioneer Vsx-1124k?

    Sony STR-DN1050 review

Written By ed, 75020 on Sunday, December 14, 2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After reading reviews, I decided to opt for this receiver to replace my 6 year old Harmon Kardon. The Sony was infinitely easier to setup with all of its HDMI ports and nearly one-step process and eliminated a lot of the behind the scenes wiring clutter my wife was continually fussing about. Sounds great with my old speakers and now my ancient ears can once again understand clear dialog when viewing programs.

Pros: ease of setup clarity of voice sound lots of input HDMI ports

Cons: lack of HDMI 2.2 might become an issue when 6K tv's become commonplace.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In the two months I have owned it, I have mixed feelings about this receiver because it has not met my expectations about being simple to use. First, the "detailed" PDF manual, which I had to download from the Sony website, is intended to be viewed on a computer due to the heavy reliance on hyperlinks. In frustration, I finally printed the 244 page document. Second, virtually all setup requires the receiver to be connected to a TV, which I did not have the first month I owned it. Even setting up FM stations requires the TV. Third, while it is true the receiver plays Pandora I did not find the ability to log into my Pandora account and so I had the choice of listening generic channels. I deliberately purchased a Sony TV, Sony Receiver, and Sony Blu-Ray to minimize complications. However, when displayed on the TV their visual interfaces are so similar it is sometimes hard to tell if I am interacting with the TV, receiver or DVD player. And, if there is a way to get all the functions to work on a single remote, I haven't found it. In frustration, I purchased an expensive Logitech programmable remote but that is only a partial fix. Alas, it cannot perform all the functions, and so I find myself sorting through the five remotes for the one that controls a particular option. I strongly suspect that this issue is common to all feature-rich receivers.

Pros: Like all the other have said it provides great sound and video, and is feature rich.

Cons: As the heart of my entertainment system, I hoped it would do a better job of integrating with my other Sony devices and thus require just one Sony remote. Perhaps my expectations are too high.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

the STR-DN1050 is an excellent product. It does more than I hoped. Many features, easy to set up and good power. This is a replacement of an older receiver. The sound produced from my surround system is greatly improved. With the fast delivery, price and wonderful service from Crutchfield, this replacement was a pleasant experience and an excellent choice.

Pros: HDMI ports, setup, and many features for the price.

    Cons: none

After much research I decided on this 1050. Dollar for dollar it had many features the comparable receivers didn't have WiFi and Bluetooth to name a few including iPod hook up. Set up with new PSB surround speakers took about 5 hours Every thing works and sounds fantastic. Very pleased with this purchase which came just under 1100 dollars. I settled for an open box option which save another 50. On line setup guide was very easy to follow. I've been watching for any cheaper price s and to date have not found any. Crutchfield service and shipping was great.

    Pros: Good SONY Product

    Great Receiver

Written By Dave, Staunton, VA on Wednesday, October 01, 2014

I was a little leery at first, because the receiver doesn't come with a manual. The Sony people are smart, though. They know most people don't read the manuals, so Sony has the receiver provide very good onscreen instructions to take you through the entire setup.

The sound is fantastic, much better than my old receiver. One particularly nice feature is the "Sound Effects" menu. By going to the "Sound Field" option you can choose effects ranging from various movie options to opera houses, whatever suits your taste.

All in all, this is a simple to use, great sounding receiver.

Pros: Great sound, easy to set up.

Cons: Setting up Pandora was a bit difficult. This is probably the only part of the onscreen instructions that is lacking. Fortunately, I called the Harrisonburg store (where I bought it), and my very helpful salesperson figured out how to do it, and guided me through the steps over the phone.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordered this receiver (before it was available from Sony!) as part of my main TV/entertainment room upgrade. Great power and clarity for my Paradigm main and surround speakers. The automatic sound environment set up was super easy with the included microphone. I love the Bluetooth and home network connectivity. Front panel is uncluttered, intuitive. The remote control is, thankfully, less "busy" than older Sony remotes that I have used in the past.

Pros: CONNECTIVITY! Plenty of power. Easy, intuitive, uncluttered.

Cons: No input for my phonograph (LOL, I actually never play my vinyl anymore!)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to setup. The menu is fairly intuitive but you really should download the 378 page help guide on the Sony website. IMO this receivers dynamic sound reproduction is the game changer and makes it a keeper. I have owned and heard lots of AV receivers and for the money you will be hard pressed to find a better choice out there right now. The STR-DN 1050 is a solid value despite the one con I have listed.

Pros: Pros: Plenty of power to run an HT system Excellent sound reproduction for movies and music. A simple and nicely laid out remote control. A pure audio mode for music Supports all the latest surround sound formats

Cons: Cons: I have only found one so far and that is while watching Blu-Rays with DTS or DMA if you use the movie button on the remote to experiment with different sound fields you can not go back to DTS/DMA without switching inputs first. This is not a big deal but an oddity none the less.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like the unit so far and it has been trouble free. At first I had issues with set up but when I connected it to the internet it ran an update it then worked great. It has so many features compared to my old system that I have not had time to explore them all. I would recommend that you download the PDF manual and keep your laptop handy when working with it. The PDF is easy to navigate by topic so it is not too difficult to find what you want.

Pros: Great sound for the money, Easy set up, Tons of features.

Cons: It runs a bit hot in standby mode. If you need to jam it into a tight space I would consider using a box fan.

Someone wrote that it had dull sound. I couldn't disagree more with their assessment. This AVR rocks. It has everything except Sirius, but I can use my iPhone, iPad, or MacBook to stream it, so it is no big deal.

The power is serious. My old receiver did not put out close to the sound this AVR does. It has all the inputs/outputs one should need. I am not too keen on the design of the front panel(Sony could make it look a lot better) but it I have it racked with the rest of my gear in the closet. The looks is not waht matters anyway, the performance matters and this AVR performs. The 165 watts/100 watts WRS cranks. The video in my TV is perfect, and the Airplay, BT, and networking and simple and work flawlessly.

I do have one wish though. The OSD when using Airplay or BT should move around on your TV so there is no way burn-in could happen. This is the one thing that makes me nervous. All TV's are susceptible to static images on the screen too long.

So far, I am very pleased with this AVR. It had the best reviews throughout my search for a new AVR. I wanted to go Yamaha this time, but the 1050 had more features and great reviews, so I'm happy with my secession.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Has a lot of features for this price range. But I got it after reading reviews about great sound quality and was very disappointed at very flat bland sound - not sure if the piece was defective. So I returned it and went to Yamaha.

Pros: Easy fast setup with pleasant tones. Good set of new features like HDMI 2, wireless network, Bluetooth etc. Good video quality.

Cons: As wrote above, sound was very disappointing, flat and surround sound for movies not enveloping at all. Setup is easy and fast but seems to primitive by current standard in receivers at this price range. Had trouble with HDMI passthrough when receiver was on standby. Did not like menu - too simple and somewhat inconvnient in finding screens you wish to go for.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had an existing several year old Sony receiver with a small number of HDMI v1.3 connections. It worked fine but was overloaded with inputs and could not pass 3D HDTV signals.

Pros: Quite versatile, supports both WiFi and ethernet, Apple Airplay, Bluetooth, and Near Field Communications (NFC, I haven't tested that). Adequate power. Zone 2 support for HDMI sources allows additional HDMI media players to be routed to my old receiver now in my bedroom. Decent remote, less cluttered than earlier models. Supports apps on both IOS and Android. IOS app easy to use (don't have Android device to test that one). Decent FM/AM performance (but I am in area of good reception).

Cons: USB support only for FAT16/FAT32, no support for the near-universal exFAT and the reasonably common NTFS. Rather skimpy printed documentation and pdf version of online help requires digging around for it. Versatility offered leads to some complexity (e.g. Zone2 output requires making settings in two locations). For some reason when Zone2 turned on CEC is disabled.

Awesome unit, glad I waited to buy this one instead of the 1040. It works well with my second zone speakers.

Pros: Easy setup, sound calibration is easy to use. Bluetooth and phone app works really well Great control features, the sound is incredible

Cons: I wish the wifi signal was a little stronger, I placed the unit in a TV stand and the cabinet blocks the signal to the receiver. My PS4is in the cabinet but my network signal isn't affected..

Ordered this and very happy with it. The main reason I got it because of Zone 2 with HDMI and bluetooth. Works great.

Pros: Many to list: zone2, bluetooth, multiple HDMI out, component (for my other projector)

Cons: I wish it output the Component in Zone2 with audio. It only outputs video but not audio. Perhaps it does and that I may not have been able to figure it out.
