Quality Construction & Circuitry: Borrowing construction and circuitry design from Sony's ES line, the STR-DN1070 AV receiver utilizes selected audio-grade components and parts that together add up to high-quality sound performance.

    • New Pre-Amplification Volume IC: Newly developed for the STR-DN1070, the pre-amplifier IC CXD90035, completely separates the ground in the IC and draws it outside of the IC. As a result, interference between each stage is eliminated, enabling high stability amplification to realize high-quality sound with rich low frequencies. In addition, the internal amplification circuit's new design improves excess properties and reduces distortion, for sound with a more open and airy feel.
    • Jitter Elimination Circuit w/ Precision Crystal Oscillator: An ES type jitter elimination circuit is used for all digital audio sources. It is a combination of carefully tuned analog and digital PLL circuitry. Unlike the conventional method, the target value is not the input master clock, but the timing reference of a precision crystal oscillator. Typical crystal oscillators are hermetically sealed and filled with nitrogen, but this method is susceptible to external vibrations that can interfere with the clock signal to produce jitter. So for the STR-DN1070, a vacuum-sealed Crystal Oscillator was chosen. This precision crystal oscillator is further enhanced with gold-plated electrodes. Gold is a well-known material for oscillators most notable for its property of adhesion to quartz that is strong enough to maintain contact even under strong physical shocks, and not forming oxides that can interfere with conductivity.
    • Stable Power Amplifier & Heat Sink Design: The STR-DN1070 offers improved structural stability for better sound via the analog signal path. This circuit is located on a glass epoxy board in order to achieve higher speed and power. By studying the fin shape and controlling the uniformity, good and stable sound can be achieved. The amplifier circuit is able to better withstand unwanted sound pressure.
    • Localized Analog Power Supply: The supply-ground path around the devices is voltage regulated locally to ensure that high frequency elements are minimized, thereby reducing electromagnetic radiation from the circuit and keeping the analogue signal path and amplifier circuit noise free. This design delivers an improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio of digital audio and digital video signals so low frequency sound is more defined, with greater purity and reality.
    • Large Capacity Power Transformer: A process of vacuum varnish achieves flat and even varnishing on internal wiring for the power transformer. Inclusion of both a copper short-ring and steel hum-proof belt around the coil and the core prevents noise leakage. This achieves rich bass and fine reproduction of image detail plus more powerful bass and lower frequency drive. The level of detail helps deliver more accurate acoustic bass and vocals, offering a new sense of clarity with space.
    • Sony Tuned Electrical Components: Large sized custom made block electrolytic capacitors are used for the main power supply. Selected audio grade resistors are used in all analogue signal paths. Large sized resistors are used together with the original type at selected critical locations. A bigger sized body offers less impedance drift from any thermal effect caused by current flow. This helps the amplifier to achieve a higher grade of sound imaging.
    • Premium Construction: For optimum audio-visual performance, the STR-DN1070 uses the highest quality components and design. The rigid steel chassis uses a frame and beam design to reduce external speaker pressure for more focused sound. While a resin-coated circuit board improves structural stability and enables greater output from the power amplifier. The unique heat sink design maximizes air intake into the amplifier circuit, helping to withstand unwanted sound pressure; all combining to deliver powerful, refined sound.
    • Digital Circuit Board: The circuit board for the digital stage is secured with strong metal frames to protect the board from speaker sound pressure. The heat sink bracket takes on the duty of shielding the digital circuit from unwanted radiation, and shields the high impedance circuit in the main body from unnecessary noise, thereby realizing clearer sound quality.
    • Second Generation ES Solder: Years of sound engineering experience and continuous sound testing by Sony helped to create an ES-grade sound quality solder. A high purity tin base is mixed with small amounts of specially chosen metal elements to create a special alloy capable of delivering sound that is responsive and very smooth.

Assignable 7-Channel Amplifier: The Sony STR-DN1070 AV receiver is equipped with a 7-channel amplifier rated at 100 watts (into 6-ohms, at 20-20khz, with 0.09% THD, driving 2 channels). The AV receiver's Surround Back/Front Height amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup.

    • Surround Back: Allows you to enjoy high-fidelity reproduction of Dolby Digital TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD (High-Resolution Audio or Master Audio) with 7.1 channel surround, using the Surround Back speaker channels.
    • Front Height: You can enjoy vertical sound effects if you connect two additional Front-Height speakers; no Surround Back speakers in this configuration.
    • B-Speakers: If you are only connecting a 5.1ch main speaker system, you can use the Surround Back/Front Height/Front B channels as a Speaker B output, allowing you to place a pair of speakers in another room of the house. Speaker B can be played at the same time of Speaker A, or by itself.
    • Zone 2: If you are only connecting a 5.1ch main speaker system, you can use the Surround Back/Front Height/Front/Zone 2 channels as a Zone 2 output, allowing you to place a pair of speakers in another room of the house. Zone 2 can be play the same source or a different source as your main zone.
    • Zone 2 + Zone: 3: If you are only connecting a 3.1ch main speaker system, you can use the Surround Back/Front Height/Front/Zone 2 channels as a Zone 2 and the Surround/Zone 3 channels as a Zone 3 output, allowing you to place multiple pairs of speakers in different rooms of the house. Zone 2 and Zone 3 can be play the same source or a different source as your main zone.
    • Bi-Amp: If you are not using the Surround Back/Front Height/Front B channels at all, you can connect them to your front speakers using a bi-amplifier connection (provides better sound quality for front speakers). A bi-amplification connection uses two amplifiers for one speaker. One amplifier is connected to the woofer section of a loudspeaker while the other is connected to the combined midrange and tweeter section. With this arrangement each amplifier operates over a limited frequency range, making its job easier.

Advanced Digital Cinema Auto Calibration (ADCAC) w/ A.P.M (Automatic Phase Matching): The Sony STR-DN1070 is equipped with Advanced Digital Cinema Auto Calibration Technology which uses the included microphone to automatically check the speaker connections, adjust the speaker output levels, calculate the distance from each speaker to the listening position, check for phase, and distinguish frequency characteristics of each speaker. The microphone has an 15' cord attached that plugs into the microphone input on front of the receiver. You can select between three auto calibration modes.

    • Full Flat: Makes the measurement of frequency from each speaker flat.
    • Engineer: Sets to "the Sony listening room standard" frequency characteristics.
    • Front Reference: Adjusts the characteristics of all of the speakers to match the characteristics of the front
      speaker.
    • Off: No auto calibration is applied.
    • Manual: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker settings.

Digital Signal Processing (DSP) & Supported Digital Audio Formats: The STR-DN1070 incorporates a powerful DSP that supports the latest surround sound formats and ensures the highest accuracy in the decoding of a variety of Dolby Digital, DTS, DSD & PCM audio formats. The digital audio formats that this receiver can decode depend on the digital audio output jacks of the connected device. This receiver supports the following audio formats

    • HP 2CH: This mode is selected automatically if you use headphones. Standard 2-channel stereo sources completely bypass the sound field processing and multi-channel surround formats are downmixed to 2 channels except LFE signals

Audio Enhancements: The Sony STR-DN1070 incorporates many different types of audio technologies to help your system sound its best whether you are enjoying high-resolution or compressed audio files, or even listening late at night at low volume levels.

    • DSEE HX: The Digital Sound Enhancement Engine HX (DSEE HX) upscales your 2ch stereo 44.1kHz or 48kHz digital music files and takes them closer to the quality of High-Resolution Audio. By restoring the high-range sound lost in the compression process, DSEE HX produces your digital music files in rich, natural sound, closer to the quality of the original recording.
    • D.L.L. (Digital Legato Linear): The Digital Legato Linear function is a Sony proprietary technology that allows low quality digital audio signals and analog audio signal to be played back with high quality sound.
    • Sound Optimizer: The Sound Optimizer lets you enjoy clear and dynamic sound at low volume levels. It automatically calibrates the sound which cannot be heard well when you turn down the volume level. After Auto Calibration is performed, the sound level is optimized to suit your environment.
    • Dynamic Range Compressor: This feature allows you to compress the dynamic range of the sound track. You can select standard or maximum compression, or off (only works with Dolby Digital sources).
    • Advanced Auto Volume: Advanced Auto Volume adjusts the volume automatically depending on the input signal or content from the connected equipment. This function is useful, for example, when the sound of a commercial is louder than the TV programs.

Flexible Home Theater Solutions: The Sony STR-DN1070 offers several unique home theater solutions when you can't accommodate a conventional 5.2ch or 7.2ch speaker setup in your room.

    • Front Surround: The AV receiver's S-Force PRO front surround mode delivers a virtual surround acoustic field using only 2.1 channels (a pair of front speakers & powered sub). So there is no need to place rear speakers behind you.
    • Wireless Surround: You can pair two Sony SongPal Link-compatible speakers (such as SRS-HG1, SRS-ZR5, or SRS-ZR7), to the receiver to use as wireless rear surrounds. A firmware update to the receiver (version M35.R.2078) may be necessary.
    • In-Ceiling Speaker Mode: This feature will virtually re-locate the Front and Center speakers of your in-ceiling speakers to around the screen. Now you will hear their characters' voices coming from the screen instead of the ceiling. This mode also makes music sound more natural and rich in the room with in-ceiling speakers.

Speaker Settings: The Sony AV receiver offers several audio settings for Front, Center, Surround, and Surround Back speakers; as well as the powered sub.

    • Equalizer: You can adjust bass & treble level of the front, center, surround/surround back and front high speakers.

    Video Section

HDMI 2.0a: The receiver is equipped with six HDMI 2.0a inputs (5 rear/1 front) for connecting HDMI-equipped audio/video component; such as your satellite/cable receiver, Blu-ray/DVD player, and game system. In addition, there are two HDMI 2.0a outputs that feed audio/video signals to up to two TVs. You can toggle or simultaneously output the same video between two displays, such as two televisions or a television plus a projector. Or you can setup the second HDMI output as a Zone 2 output, so you can view a different audio/video source in another room of your home. The receiver's HDMI 2.0a jacks are compatible with 4K/60Hz video, 4:4:4 color subsampling, HDR (High Dynamic Range) & BT.2020 video, & HDCP 2.2.

    • 4K/60Hz Pass-Through: 4K/60Hz pass-through allows the Sony STR-DN1070 to receive ultra high-definition resolution video and pass the video signal to a 4K/60Hz compatible TV or display monitor.
    • HDCP 2.2: HDCP 2.2 is supported by all of the receiver's HDMI jacks. HDCP 2.2 is short for "High bandwidth Digital Content Protection" and is used for 4K video copyright protection for compatibility with Ultra HD Blu-ray players and 4K Satellite/Cable providers.
    • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: The receiver's rear-panel HDMI jacks support RGB, YCbCr 4:4:4 color subsampling for more vibrant and lifelike images, as well as YCbCr 4:2:2 and YCbCr 4:2:0 color subsampling. With 4:4:4, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate, resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more total colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail. The front-panel HDMI input only supports up to 4:2:0.
    • HDR (High Dynamic Range): HDR (High Dynamic Range) reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, bringing greater contrast & wider color spectrum to the screen. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth. Previously hidden areas of dark shadow and sunlight are now full of clarity and detail.
    • Wide Color Gamut (BT.2020): The BT.2020 color standard delivers a much wider color gamut and represents about 75% of the total visual color spectrum, while the current Rec. 709 color standard selected as the color space for HDTVs and early generation 4K Ultra HDTVs covers only 35% of the total visual color spectrum.
Note: Use a premium high-speed 18Gbps HDMI cable for the best 4K/HDR performance.

1080p to 4K Upscale for HDMI: The Sony AV receiver's HDMI upscale function improves image quality of 1080p high-def sources to ultra-HD 4K. You can upscale 1080p HDMI input video signals to 4K and output them through the main HDMI monitor output jack of the receiver. The HDMI B/Zone output does not support upscaling.

Other HDMI Features: Other HDMI features of the Sony STR-DN1070 receiver include 3D video, HDMI Standby Pass-Through, A/V Sync, and ARC.

    • 3D-Ready: The Sony AV receiver supports 3D video pass-through (720p/1080p only) from connected 3D-compatible Blu-ray, games and broadcast devices to 3D-compatible HDTVs (all 3D components must be connected via HDMI). Special eyewear will be required for viewing 3D content.
    • HDMI Standby Pass-Through: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through feature conveniently allows you to access all your HDMI connected devices without having to power on the receiver.
    • A/V Sync: The audio output can be delayed so that the time gap between the audio output and the visual display is minimized. This is especially helpful when you are using a large LCD or plasma TV or a projection TV. When activated, the delay can be adjusted from 0-300 ms or set to Auto.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature of the receiver's main HDMI monitor output allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

Color Technologies: The Sony STR-DN1070 incorporates Triluminos Color, Super Bit Mapping, & Deep Color technologies for perfect color and smooth gradation.

    • Triluminos Color: The Sony receiver incorporates Sony's Triluminos Color technology to create a heightened sense of depth and incredibly true, natural shades of colors. Hard-to-reproduce reds, aqua blues and emerald greens are displayed beautifully, so landscapes and seascapes look more vivid. Faces look better too, with natural skin tones.
    • Super Bit Mapping: SBM (Super Bit Mapping) is a function that processes and outputs a smooth gradation video signal from the HDMI output jack.
    • Deep Color: The Sony receiver also supports Deep Color which allows the color depth of video signals passing through HDMI to be raised. The number of colors that could be expressed by 1 pixel was 24 bits (16,777,216 colors) with a standard HDMI jack. However, the number of colors which can be expressed by 1 pixel is 36 bits with a Deep Color enabled HDMI jack. Since the gradation of the depth of a color can be expressed more finely with more bits, continuous color changes can be more smoothly expressed.

24p Output: The 24p Output mode allows you to watch movies at their native frame rate 24p format (24 frames per second) when paired with a 24p playback device like a Blu-ray Disc Player.

Composite Video: The Sony receiver offers two composite video inputs and one composite video monitor output that support up to 480i video.  The composite video inputs must be out through the receiver's composite video monitor output (there is not HDMI upconversion).

    Network & Tuner Functions

You will even see the iTunes music information, including your track titles and artist info via the Sony receiver's on-screen menu (via HDMI).

DLNA Certified: The Sony STR-DN1070 is DLNA certified. The receiver's connected speakers are muted when transmitting audio wirelessly over Bluetooth to a set of headphones.
    • SSP + NFC Pairing: The STR-DN1070 pairs wirelessly and effortlessly with Bluetooth-enabled devices and headphones (up to 9) with a single press of a button. Android (OS 4.0+) smartphones that have Near Field Communication (NFC) pair simply by touching the Android device's NFC tag to the receiver's NFC tag on the front-panel. For older Android (OS 2.3.3+)smartphones, you'll need to download the NFC Easy Connect app from Google Play to use the head unit's NFC pairing function. Once paired, the AV receiver will automatically re-connect to your device or headphone when within range (up to 33').

    • Lossless: ALAC (32-96kHz; 16/24-bit)
    • Compressed: MP3 (32-320kbps), WMA (48-192kbps), AAC (48-320kbps)
    • Still-Images: JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP
Note: The receiver's USB port is not compatible with Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad or Android smartphones/tablets.
    Multi-Zone/Multi-Source

Zone 2: Zone 2 features line-level and speaker-level outputs. Zone 2 can be powered by a separate amplifier (keeping 7.1ch playback in your main room) or by the STR-DN1070's built-in amplifier (limiting the main room to 5.1ch). The volume of Zone 2 can be controlled by the Sony receiver using either configuration or from your add-on integrated amplifier when using the line-output.

    • Compatible Sources: Tuner, Analog, USB, Home Network, Music Services (including Spotify Connect & Google Cast Audio) and Bluetooth input sources are supported in Zone 2 via line-level or speaker-level output. When selecting USB, Home Network, Music Services, or Bluetooth from the main zone and Zone 2, priority is given to the choice which has most recently been selected; even if a different choice has already been selected in one of the zones. The same AM/FM station will be played back in the Main Zone and Zone 2.
    • Incompatible Sources: Analog video, HDMI, Optical/Coaxial, and Screen Mirroring sources are not output to Zone 2 via line-level or speaker-level.

Zone 3: Zone 3 features speaker level outputs for amplification of a pair of speakers in a third room of your home. By reassigning the receiver's Surround channels for Zone 3, you limit the main listening room to 3.1ch. Volume will be controlled from the Sony receiver.

    • Compatible Sources: Tuner, Analog, USB, Home Network, Music Services (including Spotify Connect & Google Cast Audio) and Bluetooth input sources are supported in Zone 3 via line-level or speaker-level output. When selecting USB, Home Network, Music Services, or Bluetooth from the main zone and Zone 3, priority is given to the choice which has most recently been selected; even if a different choice has already been selected in one of the zones. The same AM/FM station will be played back in the Main Zone and Zone 3.
    • Incompatible Sources: Analog video, HDMI, Optical/Coaxial, and Screen Mirroring sources are not output to Zone 3 via line-level or speaker-level.

HDMI Zone: The Sony AV receiver provides a HDMI Zone output, so two different HDMI audio/video input feeds can be sent to two different displays at the same time directly from the receiver. The HDMI Zone will also output 2ch audio signals (multi-channel audio is downmixed) for the HDMI input source selected, while maintain multichannel audio in the main zone (if you select the same HDMI source in the Main Zone and the HDMI Zone, then both zones will be limited to 2ch). If you connect TVs that have different resolutions in the Main Zone and HDMI Zone, but select the same HDMI input for both zones, the video signals output to each TV are limited to the lower resolution TV.

    • Compatible Sources: Only rear-panel HDMI input sources are supported by the receiver's HDMI Zone function.
    • Incompatible Sources: The front-panel HDMI input, AM/FM tuner, Analog video, USB, Bluetooth, Home Network, Music Services, and Optical/Coaxial sources are not supported by the receiver's HDMI Zone function.

SongPal Link: This Sony receiver supports Sony's SongPal Link feature. With SongPal Link, a feature of Sony's SongPal app for Apple iOS and Android, you can link multiple Sony SongPal Link compatible devices (sold separately) together to create zones, allowing you to stream the same or different music content from select online music services within the SongPal app to multiple rooms throughout your house over your home's WiFi network.

    Remote & App Control

IR Remote + Bravia Theater Sync: The supplied IR remote is pre-coded to control this Sony receiver, Sony TVs, Sony CD players, Sony DVD players and recorders, and Sony Blu-ray disc players and recorders.  Sony's Bravia Theater Sync feature allows you to easily manage select BRAVIA televisions and Sony HDMI audio and video components with a single remote. By connecting Sony components that are compatible with the HDMI Control function with a HDMI cable, operation is simplified in the following ways.

    • One-Touch-Play: When you playback a component such as a DVD/Blu-ray Disc Player, the receiver and the TV are turned on automatically and switch to the appropriate HDMI input.
    • System Audio Control: While watching TV, you can select to output the sound from the TV speaker or the speakers connected to the receiver.
    • System Power Off: When you turn off the TV, the receiver and connected components are also turned off simultaneously.
    • Theater Mode Sync: Allows you to switch the AV receiver's Theater mode from the receiver's, TV, or connected Blu-ray disc player's remote control, while pointing the remote toward your television.

IR In/Out: The Sony AV receiver is equipped with one IR input and one IR output enabling you to operate components connected to the receiver behind a closed door.

Remote Apps: The Sony STR-DN1070 offers remote control from your Apple iOS or Android device via Sony's SongPal or TV SideView apps.

    • SongPal App: Download Sony's free SongPal remote app onto your Apple iOS 8.0+ or Android OS 4.0+ device to control the AV receiver from your mobile device via a Bluetooth or WiFi connection. From the SongPal remote app, you can select input sources and customize sound settings of the Sony AV receiver. You'll also be able to browse music stored on your Network, Computer, or a USB mass storage class device from the SongPal remote app on your compatible smartphone. You'll even be able to access the AV receiver's built-in online music services from GoogleCast. In addition, you can access stored music and other apps on your smartphone using the SongPal remote app. The SongPal app will display song/artist information and album art.
    • Video & TV SideView App: You can also control the receiver using Sony's Video & TV SideView app on your Apple iOS 8.0+ or Android OS 4.1+ mobile device.
    Convenience Features

Advanced On-Screen Menu w/ Setup Wizard (via HDMI): You can display the receiver's on-screen menu on your HDMI connected TV screen and select the function you want to use from the on-screen menu using the included IR remote control. You can easily access and manage your input devices and settings with this intuitive 6-panel "activity based" on-screen menu. The STR-DN1070 on-screen, set-up wizard will take you through everything you need to create and control your home theater experience. The on-screen menu is only available from the receiver's HDMI output. If your TV is connected to the composite video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.

Note: Initial setup requires that the receiver be connected to your TV via HDMI for display of the on-screen menu. Many of the receiver's setup functions can only be found via the on-screen menu and not the front-panel display.

Custom Presets: The Sony AV receiver features four Custom Presets that are accessible through the on-screen menu. Selecting a Custom Preset will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of a source input; such as powering on the receiver, switching to the appropriate source input, and recalling the selected DSP surround mode. The presets are pre-configured, but can also be manually reconfigured to your preference. Customer Preset 1 & 2 have dedicated buttons on the remote control for even quicker access.

Input Mode: When you connect components to both digital and analog audio input jacks on the receiver, you can fix the audio input mode to either of them, or switch from one to the other, depending on the type of material you intend to watch.

Input Name: You can enter a name of up to 8 characters for each of the receiver's inputs (except Tuner) and display the name on its display. This is convenient for labeling the jacks with the names of your connected components.

Sleep Timer: The unit may be set to automatically turn off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

Auto Standby: Auto Standby lets you set the receiver switch to standby mode automatically after 20 minutes when you do not operate the receiver or when there is no signal input to the receiver.

Software Update: By downloading the latest version of software from Sony, you can take advantage of the newest functions. The receiver accesses the Sony server to update the software through its network connection. Visit the Sony eSupport website for the latest software updates.

    Q
Can I use this device in India?
    murali  Nov 08, 2017
    1 answer
    A
I'm afraid the Sony STR-DN1070 has been discontinued by Sony and is no longer available for purchase. When we last carried this model, it was designed for use in US/Canada (120V/60Hz) or Europe/Oceania (230V/50Hz) per the Owner's Manual.

Can you control the volume of active speakers with the receiver, if using zone 2 pre outs? They are variable outs?

The only way that I've found to control volume of zone 2 speakers independent of zone one is through the use of a second amplifier. I used my old one for that purpose

    Q
if the Amp is set to hdmi 1 input (but nothing playing) then i chromecast to the amp will it switch to chromecast or do i need to go to amp to switch input? I have 5 chromecast audio zones attached to multi zone amp and i just want this one to control the living room zone.

The Sony STR-DN1070 doesn't have built-in Chromecast but it does support Google Cast Audio which uses the same technology. Yes, the receiver will auto-switch to the networking capability when casting compatible apps from your devices on the same network. I hope that helps. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Ryan

    Q
Does this have a B speaker with FULL capability to play whatever source available to the receiver? For example; I want to play HDMI 2 (Amazon Fire TV) in my living room. I turn on B and get the same thing. This multi-room generally limits what sources you have to play through (Denon X1300). The fact that these things have to provide an extreme upgrade to get a B speakers is absurd.
    george  Oct 13, 2017
    1 answer
    A
No. The B and C sources are limited to USB, HOME NETWORK, Music Services or Bluetooth. Signals from the HDMI IN, OPTICAL IN and COAXIAL IN jacks cannot be output to the speakers in Zone 2 or Zone 3, even if you are playing the same source in Zone 1. I ended up purchasing a second receiver for Zone 2 and an optical switch - both of which are controlled from a universal remote. In my opinion, the Zone 2 and 3 functions for this receiver are useless and Sony's product description is misleading.
    robert  Oct 18, 2017
    Q
Is there a limit on how many speakers can or should be connected to this unit? If you have 3 zones do you need to split certain channels as mentioned in the Q&A. Example, living room, kitchen area, outdoor covered patio. If I wanted a second TV on my patio could that be powered thru the receiver as well as some speakers for it as well (doesn't have to be surround sound just amplified speakers so I don't rely on the TV speakers for sound)? Thank you.

While the Sony does support up to 3 powered zones, the main room would be restricted to 3.1 (front left, center, front right, powered sub), in this configuration. The Zone 2 pair would be connected to the Sony's "Zone 2" speaker outputs, and the Zone 3 speakers would be connected to the "Surround/Zone 3" outputs. In any of the potential configurations, the receiver will power a maximum of 7 speakers. Will the HKTS 20BQ 5.1 speakers from Harman Kardon work with the STR-DN1070?
    renusameer  Apr 03, 2017

yes they will it's according to the wattage of the speakers
    michael  Apr 06, 2017
    A
I don't see any reason why the Harman Kardon speaker system wouldn't work. I am using the STR-DN1070 with a 7.1 speaker system. The speakers I am using are larger and require a bit more power than the proposed HK system, and the amplifier is working fine with my system. In my 15-foot wide 30-foot long living room I can shake the windows without putting a strain on the amplifier. So the amplifier would certainly have the necessary power for the proposed speakers, and you can use the amplifier for any speaker configuration from just a simple 2-channel stereo arrangement all the way up to 7.1. In the setup, which is straight forward, all you have to do is specify how many speakers you have and where they're at, and then then the amplifier sets itself up properly. The proposed HK system has matched speakers for left/right main and the two surrounds. Mine are not matched and the automatic setup did a pretty good job of getting the balance adjusted with intervention on my part,

The Harmon Kardon speakers will work great. The Sony processor can be set up as a 5.1 unit as well as the 7.1. Good luck although you don't need it with Crutchfield behind you.

I have not tried that and it may depend to some extent on your TV but I suspect that there would be a way to do it through the zones for speakers.

That depends on the TV. Most Smart TV's wont allow both. Real question is why would you want to?

    Q
Can I access the sound setting equalizer hidden in "HOME/SETUP..." to adjust bass and treble for CD music without having a TV hooked up to the STR-DN1070? I don't see SETUP on the monitor as a selection option when using the the 1070 as a stand-alone amplifier for a CD player.

I do not believe it is possible to access this without a display connected unless it is accessible through the mobile app via WiFi. I have not tried it with the SongPal mobile app but that would be the only way I could think of accessing those settings without a display.
    michael  Mar 06, 2017

I believe the answer to this question is "yes" if you have the SongPal app on your smart phone. In the app there is a "settings" panel and within that is the "equalizer" for adjusting bass and treble for front, center and surround speakers. Hope that helps.

    Q
What do they mean by "AirPlay and optical/coaxial digital sources cannot be output to Zone 2"? If I use AirPlay for all 3 zones, will it be heard through zone 2 and 3 speakers?
    robert  Dec 06, 2016
    1 answer
    A
No, it won't. I don't know why they even advertise Zone 2 and 3 functionality on this receiver, because Zone 2 & 3 sources are limited to [USB], [HOME NETWORK], [Music Services] or [Bluetooth] regardless of what is playing in Zone 1. I bought a second receiver to drive Zone 2 and I handle the switching and source selection with a Logitech Harmony remote.

    Q
Can I connect three sets of speakers to play music from the same source in different rooms, and can I select the individual sets to play? For instance, can I play music from my iPad through my living room speakers, my patio speakers and my game room speakers simultaneously, or individually?
    robert  Nov 28, 2016
    3 answers
    A
Sort of. You can't play HDMI sources to the zone 3 speakers (if you decided for instance to hook your game room speakers up to the zone 3 speaker terminals) but you should be able to play your iPad and select the individual sets through Bluetooth to those zone speakers individually or in any combination. Also, it doesn't appear that you can have different non-hdmi sources playing to the three speaker sets, unless one of the sources is from the analog inputs on the back of the receiver (from a analog CD player, for instance). However note that if you choose to hook up your zone 3 speakers to your game room or patio, you will lose the ability to output your main entertainment room speakers to anything more than 3.1. That is, you cannot switch from listening to the zone 3 speakers and then decide you want to watch a movie in your media room in 5.1.The speaker terminals have one set for either zone 3 or 5.1on the back of the Sony 1070 so you must pick which set up you want when you attach your speakers. Assuming you have more than a 3.1 setup in your media room, this pretty much makes the zone 3 feature useless. That said, it's unlikely that any other receiver under $1,000 will be able to do much better in this regard. Alternatively, you could buy a speaker splitter to switch between the zone 3 and 5.1 settings.
    sam  Dec 12, 2016

With three-zone listening, you can connect three sets of speakers and listen to the same audio output across three rooms. The receiver can also control two separate source inputs at once. Select which signal is sent to each listening zone, so you can watch a DVD in your living room using 5.2 channels while others listen to a CD in the den using 2 channels.

I only got it for the 4k and HDCP 2.2 hdmi with passthru. From Sony: Listen in another room with three zone listening With three zone listening, you can connect three sets of speakers to the STR-DN1070 and listen to the same audio output across three rooms, with 3.2ch in the main room and 2ch each in the other two rooms. The receiver can also control two separate source inputs at once. Select which signal is sent to each listening zone, so you can watch a DVD in your living room with 5.2ch and listen to a CD at the same time in another room using 2ch. Of course you can bring it all together into one room as an immersive 7.2ch surround experience. Hope that helps

Yes, you can adjust the volume for each of the three zones, independently, from the Sony receiver. You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the receiver's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table. I hope that helps. Q
How does this receiver hold up to the competition like Onkyo TX-RZ800 and the Onkyo TX-NR747 because I hear that they have superior sound quality compared to the sony at similar prices. Would this receiver be a good replacement to my 8 year old sony str dg 720 receiver? Or would I be better off with the onkyo?

Michael, It may. I upgraded to this receiver at the same time I upgraded my BluRay player and TV. I went from a 10 year old 46" 720p to a 65" 1080p 4K TV and am absolutely amazed. During the world series I watched a ball leave the pitcher's hand and could see the backwards spin & stitching as it revolved going to the batter. I was stunned by the sharpness. This was over my 1080p DISHnetwork signal.

While the Sony does offer 4K video up-conversion, you will not benefit from this feature unless you have a 4K display. I hope that helps. My bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

    what is power @8 ohms?
    sam  Sep 03, 2016
    1 answer
    A
Sony only rates the power output of their STR-DN1070 receiver at 6-ohm, so there's no way to know for sure how much wattage it produces at an 8-ohm load. That said, a good "ballpark" estimate would likely be somewhere between 70-80 watts per channel at 8-ohm. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=159

What color is the front display, and is color changeable? and brightness adjustable? Are there black plugs to cover the front inputs for appearance?

The display is a blue/white and to my knowledge it is not changeable. I have not had mine long but I do think the brightness is adjustable. There are no cover plugs for the front inputs.

The front display on the STR-DN1070 is light blue, sometimes high intensity. I have not explored Easy Setup but I did not find any reference to changing the display in the Operating Instructions for Easy Setup. Perhaps if you noodle around in Easy Setup (see page 34) you'll find something I missed. Here is the first paragraph: Setting up the Receiver using the Easy Setup To perform initial setup of the receiver, make sure a TV is connected to the receiver (page 24). Then, switch the input of the TV to the input to which the receiver is connected. _____ I thought if I wanted to cover the front ports, I'd used a piece of black plastic and 2-sided tape and it would look fairly professional. Where to get such a piece of plastic? Stores that make name tags and nameplates for desks and cubicles would have these. There were no socket plugs in my product and none are listed in the parts part of the manual.

Hi, please what is the power input (electricity) for this amp? I might need to get a step up transformer to power it in an European region. It's not yet available in the UK. How many watts transformer would you recommend?

Hey there. I'm in a similar situation. It's strictly 120V AC. I purchased it in the US a couple of weeks ago but using it in Nigeria which is 230v. Specs in the user guide state a power consumption of 240W. I have a 1000W step down transformer connected to a Monster Power strip however this controls my entire entertainment A/V system, TV and all. Hope this helps.

Does this unit have the connected or active speaker display on the front panel? By that I mean similar to my current STR-DG1200, or as shown in the picture of the new STR-ZA1000ES.

The STR-DN1070 will display the audio format and decoding method but does not provide a diagram of active speakers on the built-in display. You can view all of the display indicators and their descriptions in the Sony Owner's Manual. You'll find the link to download the manual by clicking the "Details" tab on the receiver's main webpage. It's under the "What's in the box?" heading. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

We do not offer any Sony home theater speakers for use with a receiver/amplifier like this STR-DN1070. We do have a wide selection of home theater speaker systems though: http://www.crutchfield.com/g_12700/Surround-Sound-Speaker-Systems.html?tp=184 I hope that helps!
