About the Sony VPL-VW350ES

Steve Kindig

Sony lowers the price of entry for 4K detail and clarity — again

Sony's very first 4K Ultra HD home theater projector cost an eye-popping $25,000. Last year's VPL-VW600ES produces an amazing picture while costing a lot less — $15,000. Now comes the VPL-VW350ES, which while not inexpensive, delivers a truly cinema-like 4K home theater viewing experience for less than $10K.

Sony lowers the price of entry for 4K detail and clarity — again

Sony VPL-VW600ES

Sony's very first 4K Ultra HD home theater projector cost an eye-popping $25,000. Last year's VPL-VW600ES produces an amazing picture while costing a lot less — $15,000. Now comes the VPL-VW350ES, which while not inexpensive, delivers a truly cinema-like 4K home theater viewing experience for less than $10K.

How cinema-like? Well, the VPL-VW350ES is based on the same 4K Digital Cinema SXRD™ technology found in Sony's professional projectors. The 'VW350ES uses three of these SXRD image chips — one each for red, green, and blue — to produce extraordinarily rich, saturated colors that pop off the screen.

Actual 4K content looks spectacular, and the 'VW350ES's smart and powerful upconversion capabilities improve the picture quality of every source you run through it.

Larger-than-life images with Ultra HD detail

1080p vs 4K projected images

The VPL-VW350ES's 4K Ultra HD projection system has four times the detail of 1080p.

Ultra High Definition really comes into its own on larger screens. 4K provides four times the picture detail of full HD 1080p. The difference is certainly visible on TV-sized screens, but when you're projecting onto a screen that's 100", 120" or even larger, the enhanced clarity and sense of depth is profound.

True 4K content will be scarce for a while, but that won't be an issue for this projector. Based on ten years' experience upscaling movies to 4K in over 15,000 theaters worldwide, Sony has developed a processor so advanced it can upscale HD content to 4K quality. This 4K Reality Creation chip enhances picture quality by analyzing and correcting images, resulting in natural, unhyped detail and color.

You'll see the benefits of Reality Creation on everything from Blu-ray discs to Netflix® movies to video clips from your smartphone. Sony included a cool feature for gamers, too: a special picture mode for gaming with very low "input lag," for more responsive game play.

Praise for the Sony VPL-VW350ES from Sound & Vision

"At $5,000 less than Sony's next-least-expensive 4K projector, the VPL-VW350ES is a seriously good value. Properly set up, it delivers a stunning picture, with accurate color, good contrast (despite its lack of a dynamic or manual iris control), and brightness to spare. Plus it comes with most of the amenities you'd expect from a high-end projector, including motorized focus/zoom adjustments and lens shift. If you're considering scaling up to a screen size that will make an extra investment in 4K worth it, the VPL-VW350ES is worth your consideration."

Go with the Motionflow™

The larger the image, the more challenging it is to maintain a smooth, clear picture during fast-paced onscreen action. Sony's Motionflow is one of the most sophisticated and refined blur-reduction technologies available, and the VPL-VW350ES has a version with some unique capabilities.

Several presets, ranging from aggressive to mild, make it easy to reduce motion blur and judder without introducing the dreaded "soap opera effect." Some of the most effective modes make use of "dark frame insertion," which avoids the image artifacts created by motion compensation processing, but also reduces light output by about 25%. So, if your setup requires the projector's maximum light output, you may want to select one of the other Motionflow options.

Flexible setup for rooms large and small

Professional installation is a popular choice for projectors in this price range, but Sony designed the VPL-VW350ES for easy setup. It features a powered zoom lens and powered lens shift for adjusting the image either horizontally or vertically, to allow for off-center projector placement. Sony recommends a maximum screen size of 150", or 120" if you want to use the 3D feature. You'll also get amazing results with screens sized 100" or less. And because Sony's super-quiet built-in cooling fan is inaudible from more than a few feet away, you won't be distracted by the fan in smaller rooms. Out-of-the-box picture settings are so spot on you'll be tempted to leave them as is. But if you like to tweak you can fine-tune brightness, contrast, and color to suit a wide range of rooms, screens, and video sources.

For the best picture quality from any projector, we recommend using a projection screen.

4K SXRD Technology: SXRD is a display technology developed by television engineers at Sony to meet and exceed the demands of a Ultra-High Definition image at its full 4K resolution. It is a 4096 x 2160 panel characterized by several key benefits such as Ultra-HD resolution, smooth film-like image with minimal screen door effects, high response times (2.5ms rise and fall), high contrast ratio with wire grid polarizers and high contrast plate and accurate color rendition. The images from the three SXRD 0.74" panels (8,847,360 pixels each) are superimposed over each other, making the projector's native resolution 4096 x 2160, a total of 26,542,080 pixels

  • Full Digital Cinema 4K: Sony's VPL-VW350ES SXRD 4K video projector offers Full Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI)-based 4096 x 2160 resolution, delivering a cinematic 4K experience in your home. With 4096 x 2160 resolution and pixels one quarter the size of those from traditional 1080p projectors, the Sony 4K projector delivers smooth, lifelike images with fewer artifacts, even on home theater screens up to 150" in 2D (or 120" in 3D). Now you can sit closer to the action, while jagged edges and revealed pixels are eliminated.
  • 4K Reality Creation Upscaling: Dramatically improving your viewing experience, the projector's Reality Creation engine for 4K upscaling enhances both the "Mastered in 4K" Blu-ray Discs and high definition 1080p content including 3D video. Now you can watch all your favorite HD movies and television shows in 4K (3840 x 2160).

Dual HDMI 2.0 Inputs: The Sony VPL-VW350ES is fitted with two HDMI 2.0 inputs to connect your high-definition sources; such as Blu-ray/DVD player, Satellite/Cable receiver, game system, or AV receiver. In addition, the HDMI inputs can be used to connect a PC to this TV. The HDMI inputs will accept 4K/60Hz, 1080p (24/60Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.

  • HDCP 2.2: HDCP 2.2 is supported only by the projector's HDMI 2 input. HDCP 2.2 is short for "High bandwidth Digital Content Protection" and is used for 4K video copyright protection for compatibility with 4K Blu-ray players and 4K Satellite/Cable providers.
  • 4:2:0 Color Subsampling: The projector's HDMI inputs support 4:2:0 color subsampling. This ratio indicates that the chromo channels are subsampled both horizontally and vertically. This reduces color resolution in both the horizontal and vertical dimensions compared to 4:2:2, which only reduces horizontal chroma resolution.
Note: The projector does not offer any analog video inputs.

Optional 4K Media Player: Add a Sony 4K Ultra HD Media Player (FMP-X10, sold separately) for exclusive access to Sony's Video Unlimited 4K service, which hosts the largest selection of feature films and TV episodes in 4K Ultra HD for the home. Choose to download new releases and classic films for rental or purchase. Or choose from a vast library of included 4K videos. Also included is access to Netflix and its 4K movies.

Note: The Sony FMP-X10 4K Ultra-HD media player requires a network connection. It can be connected to your home network via an a wired (Ethernet) or wireless (WiFi) connection. A wireless connection requires a home network with an 802.11 access point (802.11n recommended) and internet connection. Sony recommends a home network connection speed of at least 2.5 Mbps recommended for standard definition, 10 Mbps for high definition, and 15 Mbps for ultra-high definition.

TRILUMINOS Color: The Sony  projector incorporates Sony's Triluminos Color technology to create a heightened sense of depth and incredibly true, natural shades of colors. Hard-to-reproduce reds, aqua blues and emerald greens are displayed beautifully, so landscapes and seascapes look more vivid. Faces look better too, with natural skin tones.

Lamp Control: Sony's lamp control technology perfectly establishes vibrant, cinema-quality brightness levels on your favorite 2D or 3D movies and TV shows. The Sony VPL-VW350ES video projector outputs 1500 lumens (ANSI rating) for a bright and dynamic picture.

Deep/x.v. Color: The Sony video projector supports a color depth of up to 12 bits. Connecting the projector and a Blu-ray player that supports Deep Color via HDMI allows more accurate color reproduction than when connecting it to a player that does not support Deep Color.   The VPL-VW350ES also supports x.v.Color, meaning it's ready for x.v.Color content when it becomes available in the near future.

Motionflow Technology: Enjoy smooth, sharp motion from sporting events, action movies, and video games with Sony's Motionflow  technology. Motionflow technology also minimizes 3D crosstalks and greatly diminishes the possibility of ghosting when watching 3D.

24pTrue Cinema (24p Input Capability): Many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (fps) and prime time TV programs are video taped at 24p. Seizing on an opportunity, some studios are taking a purist approach and encoding high definition video content such as Blu-ray Disc in 24p. Sony wisely takes advantage of this by including 24p input capability via HDMI on this television producing images that are smooth and natural looking.

Motorized Lens: Installing the VPL-VW350ES is easy with its motorized lens (85%[v]/31% [h]) motorized shift and wide throw distance range (1.38-2.83). The 2.06x powered zoom lens and a wide lens shift range provide further installation flexibility and remarkable performance in nearly every screening room. The Sony VPL-VW350ES video projector can produce a 4K image that is adjustable between 60" and 150" (up to 120" for 3D). The projector's adjustable lens provides a wide range of placement possibilities for a given screen size.

Screen Size Throw Distance
80" 8' - 16.4'
100" 10'- 20.5'
120" 12' - 24.75'
150" 15' - 30.9'

Installation Adjustments: During the initial setup, or subsequent adjustment, these features help optimize performance and offer placement flexibility.

  • Image Flip: Flips the image vertically or horizontally.
  • Blanking: Allows you to adjust the displayable region within the four directions of the screen.
  • Panel Alignment: This feature allows you to adjust the gaps in the color of characters or the picture.

Active 3D Technology: The Sony VPL-VW350ES gives you the option to enjoy 3D (three-dimensional) pictures and graphics. You can enjoy an immersive, realistic movie and gaming experience in Ultra-HD 4K using Sony's active 3D glasses (TDG-BT500A, sold separately). Enjoy 3D content from your HDMI connected Blu-ray player, satellite receiver, or gaming console (all sold separately). When using the active shutter glasses, the on-screen image is precisely synchronized and delivered with the full high-definition image intact, for an optimum 3D viewing experience. Sony's 3D technology displays high speed synchronized left- and right-eye images to deliver an amazing 3D experience. And since each frame you see is shown in high-definition, the 3D action still offers razor-sharp detail. You can adjust the following 3D settings.

  • 3D Adjustment: You can adjust the depth of the 3D image to your personal preference, as well as set the image brightness when using the 3D display mode.
  • 2D-to-3D Conversion: To ensure that you can enjoy 3D any time you want, Sony has incorporated 2D-to-3D conversion, which allows you to watch your favorite 2D movies, TV programs, or games in virtual 3D.

Picture Calibration: Quickly calibrate your picture to the type of content you're enjoying with a variety of adjustments.

  • Aspect Ratio: You can select an aspect ratio best suited for the video signal received. Choose from the following:
    • 1.85:1 Zoom: a 1.85:1 aspect ratio picture is displayed in its original aspect ratio, enlarged so that black bands do not appear at the top and bottom of the screen
    • 2.35:1 Zoom: a 2.35:1 aspect ratio picture is displayed in its original aspect ratio, enlarged so that black bands at the top and bottom of the screen are as small as possible
    • Normal: input video is displayed in its original aspect ratio, enlarged to fill the screen; this mode is suitable for viewing 1.78:1 (16:9) and 1.33:1 (4:3) video
    • Stretch: displays video that has been squeezed to 1.33:1 (4:3) as 1.78:1 (16:9) aspect ratio

Q
Can this unit be mounted from the ceiling?

A
Yes. But the light from the lens extends straight forward from the bottom of the lens and upwards at an angle from the top of the lens with screen size determined dy the distance from the projector lens to the screen. While this set up is optimal for a coffee table mounting location, if you want to mount it to the ceiling, the projector must be inverted with the light from the 'bottom' of the lens shining parallel to the ceiling to the top of the screen ang the angled light from the 'top' of the lens shining downward to the bootom of the screen. Inversion brackets are available for about $100
