Sony video in your car

You trust Sony to provide outstanding in-home video products, so why not enjoy the same quality in your car? Their XAV-65 DVD receiver will serve as your mobile A/V center, with a high-resolution 6.2" WVGA touchscreen that offers outstanding video performance and great system control. Slide a DVD into the front slot to enjoy movies or videos when you're parked.

iPod® and iPhone® control

You can plug your iPod into the receiver's front USB input for direct control and playback of audio files. Insert a CD or DVD loaded with MP3, WMA, or AAC music files for hours of audio entertainment.

Sophisticated sound controls

Factory radios often lack clarity and power — no such problem with this Sony. Its powerful amp combines with advanced circuitry to deliver excellent sound quality. You can adjust the EQ3 3-band equalizer to optimize the acoustics in your vehicle, and tailor the reciever's audio output to your speakers or external amps with the high- and low-pass filters.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Note: Use of a video display while moving may be subject to state and local laws.

I am very disappointed that this unit is touted as iPhone compatible, but when plugging the phone in through the USB cable it works properly about 30% of the time. Most often you just get the spinning wheel of death. Do not buy if your intent is to plug an iPhone into it. The sound is good and it appears to be well built, but when you buy a radio for the one purpose of plugging in your phone this unit fails to deliver.

    Pros: Easy install

Cons: It does not work as advertised.

I'm liking this newest addition to my 2007 hyundai azera. I have ran into problems with the SWC adapter that comes bundled through Crutchfield not being absolutely compatible with my stock wiring system. However, the sound quality is very nice in my stock infinity system and it's easy to use.

First off, I don't even care about the fact that this unit plays CDs/DVDs, the only reason I bought a DVD receiver is for the backup camera that I desperately need for my 2003 Honda Odyssey. I don't even use the AM/FM radio. I DID buy it mainly because it has a good sized volume knob vs. +/- buttons, it's just faster to adjust the volume with a knob, and because the USB/aux ports are in front, where they are supposed to be.

There are OS/CPU quirks with this unit, it feels like it's being powered by an 8086 processor, when you press a button to go to the sound settings for instance, the whole screen goes black for about 2 seconds, then it goes to the settings screen, so it has to "think" when you press certain functions. Also, if you are listening to files on a thumb drive and you press the HOME key, the music stops.... why?? It should stop only when you press a new source button.

Installation in a 2003 Odyssey is a chore, get yourself a good file set, you're going to have to mill down some extruded resin to get the receiver into the opening, the Metra kit shipped with the radio didn't help any either as it requires some modifications, you'll need diagonal pliers, maybe some sandpaper/files, strong hands and some patience.

As of right now I have not had the opportunity to test out what happens when you are listing to music and you put the car in reverse to activate the backup camera, I would hope that the music keeps playing but I think it's a coin toss

Pros: It's a Sony! vs. other "new to the game" Crutchfield brands you can buy. No frills, easy to learn and navigate, simple touchscreen interface, helps you focus on the road.

Cons: Pricey, should have been $50 less or come with Bluetooth, not worth the quirks. 3 band equalizer makes it feel it's 1985. Every time you start the car, you have to acknowledge a safety statement and press OK on the display before you can use the unit (I hope there is an option to turn this off). No dedicated pre-amp sub-woofer out RCA connection, you have to share/switch between rear speakers or sub-out, can't have both, this is the biggest downer for me.

If you are looking for an economical touch screen-based iPod player, this is the product for you. Typical Sony quality and sound, and easy navigation make this the perfect budget solution to a car that does not come with a USB input. It I had one complaint it is that I wish I could scroll faster through playlists. And the free wire harness and car kit make me question why anyone would buy anywhere else.

    Pros: Cost Sound Quality

Cons: Scrolling through long lists of playlists.

Purchased this for a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan. Replaced the base stock head unit. Sound quality is fine. Rather than do the install myself, I let a local retailer do it. The parts that Crutchfield sent made the install easy for the tech. Although I have more cons than pros, I would still buy this head unit again. I am satisfied with it. The cons, excluding the RDS implementation, are really minor annoying quirks.

RDS implementation suffers by the lack of space afforded to the radio information. A previous reviewer explained precisely the problem with the implementation. Two lines in the center with limited characters requiring scrolling of information. Totally unnecessary.

Pros: Pleasing background, front usb/ipod, aux connections. The USB connection charges the iPod and controls the iPod from the screen as advertised. Pleasing sound quality. Relatively low cost touchscreen. Steering wheel controls worked correctly after head unit change, with proper adapter supplied by Crutchfield. Plays MP3 CDs. If your MP3 CDs are tagged properly, album art will display as well as song, artist and album name. The space provided for the text, excluding the FMs RDS display, is huge.

Cons: RDS implementation is poor. Why such a small area was allotted to RDS is anyone's guess but the designer failed here. Purchased CDs do NOT display song names, although MP3 CDs may, if tagged correctly. Font size is fixed on the display. A larger font size or a different font would have been preferable. Can't change the background on the display. Album art NOT displayed from iPods. The legal message about distracted driving is annoying and should be fixed.

    Pros: Good price and quality

Cons: I have a 2011 nissan titan with cd player (regular base model truck). The factory install kit is no good because it makes the radio sit to far inside. I was able to remove the factory brackets from the old radio and use them in this sony. Works great now.

Great radio with a very responsive touch screen. It could do with a few more features like the option to change the background or put an SD card in to hold music but thats tiny. Overall a great radio for the price.

A very good, low cost receiver/DVD. Good sound quality, plays all my disks - CD, MP3, DVD etc. Replaced my stock receiver as the CD player went out - it would not play MP3 anyway.

Pros: Frame adapter fits properly, instructions fairly clear, although they missed a few screws. Easier to remove dash modules first, then disconnect the cables.

Cons: Annoying 'legal' message about distracted driving appears every time the car is started, that needs to be cleared.

this is a really great upgrade from factory for my 2010 ford transit connect work truck. the only thing it's missing is bluetooth for handsfree talking. it's a little slow to load discs when i get the truck cranked, but that's really minor. the touch screen is very responsive and the eq works very well. I wish the instructions had made it more clear that the dvd player won't read discs unless the parking break wire is connected to a source (whether it's the actual parking break indicator or not). The screen is nice and bright and the blue sony color scheme is very pleasing to me.

Not exactly what i expected but works fine for price. I should of researched a little better but the DVD/CD players are new to me. Doesn't have all the options i wanted owners manual very vague/generic.Overall is a good unit.

Pros: Easy to install after you get old unit out.

Cons: Installation instructions could be better. When removing center console on Mustang you must have shifter in drive and parking brake pulled as far back as you can.Instructions say to disconnect battery first but you have to have power and key on to put shifter in drive. So disconnect battery after you have adjusted shifter. Also when hooking up green wire for DVD to parking brake it doesnot specify which wire to use there are 2.

    2006 Honda Ridgeline
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    • "Coolness Factor"
    • Build Quality
    • Ease of Use
    • Sound Quality
    • Value

Purchased this head unit primarily for price and cosmetics, After spending 30 minutes on the bench with solder station and heat shrink, the free installation parts Crutchfield supplied made this installation a snap in the target 06 Ridgeline. The Sony is a nice compliment to the dash. The tuner does a remarkable job capturing and maintaining stations given the lousy antenna location built in the Ridgeline. For both AM and FM, this unit far exceeds the factory tuner, which was less than impressive. The amplifier produces impressive pressure levels driving two pairs of Kenwood KFc-709PS component speakers. And the built in EQ does a decent job of compensating for less than ideal cabin acoustics.

In my opinion, the control software isn't quite ready for primetime. For example: - RDS implementation is just plain goofy. The giant display on this device should afford the designer ample real estate to provide the user two line display of song title/artist/station. Instead, there is a very small character limited section in the center of the display where these elements scroll, sometimes cutting off words in one line then showing the user one or two letters in the next line. This renders RDS nearly useless by causing the user to constantly glance at the display when an unknown artist or title is (attempting to be) displayed. From a road safety perspective and general useability perspective, this is a very poor implementation.

    - Navigating to the home screen causes odd or disparate behavior depending on the current source selection. Case in point: when listening to the tuner and selecting the Home/DSPL function, the tuner continues to play until the user selects a new source, such as disc or iPod. However, when listening to disc or iPod and selecting the Home page, audio is muted until a new source is selected. Why the different treatment?

    - When using the built in DAC for an iPod, there are random pauses in audio, as if the data gets momentarily out of sync between the source and DAC. This is a very annoying characteristic and can come at times when attempting to enjoy a tune at high listening levels. All the music stored on the iPod Touch is coded Apple Lossless, perhaps when the source is compressed, this issue would not exist. (Phooey on compression!)

    - Navigating data on an iPod makes for a disappointing user experience. Example: When changing from random play to linear play, the expected behavior is that of iTunes or the user interface on an iPod, meaning if you are listening to a particular song and random is de-selected, the current album playing should continue. It does not. Instead, it will play the next tune in alphabetical order.

There are other issues with user interface design and software behavior of this unit that are less than ideal, but I don't mean to leave a negative impression. Once a user acclimates to some of the quirky aspects of this product, it offers a sonically satisfying experience

Pros: Cosmetically pleasing. Good sound for an all-in-one-unit. Decent value for the $.

Cons: Software is less than fully developed.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I picked this XAV-65 from all the other models mainly for the included built in adapter for steering wheel controls. I picked Crutchfield for the good tech support and included installation kit. I made a good choice. The Sony manual didn't have nearly enough information to connect the steering wheel controls so I called for support. DJ M at Crutchfield did some research and emailed me another Sony document that had all the info I needed to make the connections and the steering wheel controls work great. This Sony document only has info for certain Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Suzuki wiring harness connectors so if you have a different vehicle you may find it more difficult to make the connection. The Crutchfield supplied installation kit fit well and the installation in my Toyota Tacoma was fairly easy.

I am really happy with this unit. The iPod support is very nice allowing all the features for playing music by playlist, artist, etc. The FM radio works well and DVDs play just like at home. I am not using a sub-woofer but the connections and setup are straight forward. I also like the very simple styling. Overall the unit is easy to use and intuitive. There are a few features I would want to add or improve. The equalizer control is not very sophisticated and has just low, mid, and high with no other adjustments. I have had receivers with more detailed control. Also there is no option to change the screen background which would be nice.

Pros: Built in steering wheel control adapter Nice simple styling Easy to use touch screen control Good performance for the money

Cons: Sony manual does not have enough info for connecting steering wheel controls Can't change the screen background Equalizer is only very basic

The WVGA LCD monitor has a high resolution of 800 (H) x 480 (V) x RGB; with 1,152,000 total pixels. The LCD monitor provides touchscreen controls with interactive video graphics and icons, making menu navigation easy.

You can also change the screen's aspect ratio of the DVD receiver's LCD monitor to suit your video content. You can choose from Normal, Wide, Full, or Zoom.
    • Dimmer + Auto Off: To change the brightness of the display you can set the XAV-65 to one of two dimmer modes; Dimmer Auto (dims the display automatically when you turn your vehicle's lights on), or Dimmer On (display always dim). You can adjust the dimmer level from -5 to +5. When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting at a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.
    • 12-/24-Hour Clock: The head unit's clock can be set to a 12-hour or 24-hour mode. The clock will be visible during Tuner, Disc, USB, and iPod playback; as well as from the main menu screen and sub menus.
Note: For your convenience, this unit is equipped with a multiple language display. You can select the language which is best suited to your first language; English, French, or Spanish.

Front-Panel Controls: In addition to the head unit's touchscreen controls, the XAV-65 also offers a 3-way rotary knob and "HOME-DSPL" push button along the left side of the screen.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the light green wire in the supplied 16-pin harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. Video can only be displayed when the vehicle's parking brake is engaged. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view source information, song/artist information, and menus.

2-DIN Chassis: The Sony XAV-65 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is no mounting sleeve provided to Euro- or Custom-mount the in-dash receiver. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

The rear-panel composite video output will display whatever video source is being played on the DVD receiver. You can select an aspect ratio suitable for your connected monitor. You can choose from 16:9, 4:3 Letter-Box, or 4:3 Pan&Scan.

Rear View Camera: The Sony XAV-65 is equipped with a composite video Rear View Camera input. You can view a Normal or Reversed (mirror) image, as well as display marker lines to assist you while backing up. When your vehicle's shift lever is in the reverse position, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera. The purple/white wire (attached to the unit's preamp output harness), must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). Automatic video switching takes approximately 2.5 seconds.

Note: Audio from your music source will continue playing, while the back-up camera is displayed.

    Tuner & Remote Features

Digital Clarity Tuner w/ RDS: The Sony XAV-65 is equipped with a Digital Clarity Tuner for clear AM/FM stereo sound with digital processing technology.

    • RDS: Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible FM stations. FM stations with Radio Data System (RDS) service send inaudible digital information along with the regular radio program signal.
    • Presets: The radio features 5 memory bands to store and receive AM/FM stations. You can store up to 6 presets each in FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1 and AM2 (total: 18 FM/12 AM). Preset tuning can be done manually or automatically (BTM). BTM (Best Tuning Memory) selects stations with the best signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency. To help find what's playing on your preset stations, you can play the first few seconds of each preset radio station until you find the one you want.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The Sony XAV-65 offers built-in steering wheel remote compatibility with select Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Subaru, and Suzuki vehicles (the included 3-wire harness plugs into the head unit's OEM SWC input and will need to be hardwired to vehicle's wiring). through the USB slot only certain android devices work, none that I've tried. through auxiliary input they work just fine but the USB support is mainly for Apple products [ Eric  Feb 01, 2016 ]
Android devices will work with this radio through the front USB port if you have the right USB cable (One that will transfer data) . It's a bit slow because the radio needs to recognize the device before music will play (Takes about 20 seconds). Personally, I use a 32Gb thumbdrive will all my music stored on that and just leave it inside the radio. Plus it connects to the thumb drive instantly so there is no delay before I can play music like there is through a USB cable to my phone. [ Alex  Feb 01, 2016 ]

The illumination wire is not needed for a proper installation of this unit. The unit itself has a dimming function if it becomes too bright for you in lower lighting situations. [ JOHNN D  Jan 04, 2016 ]
Kind of. The illumination wire will tell the head unit to switch from BRIGHT to DIM display when you turn on your headlights. When I say DIM, I mean the radio's setting by way of it's internal dimmer feature (not your vehicle's dimmer switch). Your vehicle's harness adapter should have a wire devoted to this. What Metra adapter do you have? [ JEFFREY  Jan 04, 2016 ]
No you dont need it. [ FRANCISCO  Jan 04, 2016 ]
I think any would work, but I wouldn't suggest this one. It works well enough, but I was a bit disappointed overall. [ ROBERT  Dec 05, 2015 ]
Absolutely. There is an input dedicated to a rear view camera, but that's arbitrary. You could use that if you don't want to use a backup camera...however there is an additional A/V input you can use for any video source...from a DVD player or a 2nd camera. [ JEFFREY  Nov 05, 2015 ]
    No [ JOHNNY M  Dec 17, 2014 ]
No it does not. The newer model does but is upwards of 600 dollars. This is a good but but no Bluetooth. [ Benson  Dec 17, 2014 ]
Yes it does have Bluetooth and it wants to controls everything you have. It's like the terminator. It controls your time, presets , remote start, and eventually you phone. Not worth your time to figure it out. Looks great and sounds great, but it wants to go to Sony and resets everything you own. I gave it a 1 star. [ Michael  Dec 17, 2014 ]
No it does not. I did however purchase an audio bluetooth streaming receiver that works great with this deck for about $20. Crutchfield does have available the Sony XAV-68BT DVD receiver that does have Bluetooth capability. I saw it for about $280. That's a good deal cuz I bought my xav-65 for $300 or so back in March. Good luck. [ oliver  Dec 17, 2014 ]
