Sony XAV-68BT

The XAV-68BT offers a crisp and attractive interface.

iPhone® and Android™ control

You can plug your iPod, iPhone, or Android phone into the receiver's front USB input for direct control and playback of your music. Or insert a CD or DVD loaded with MP3 or WMA music files for hours of audio entertainment. For video entertainment, slide in a DVD or plug in a USB device to enjoy movies or videos when you're parked.

Optimize your audio

Everybody's familiar with the annoying sound of an underpowered factory radio turned up too loud — no such problem with this Sony. Its powerful amp combines with advanced circuitry to make your discs and digital music sound their best. You can adjust the EQ3 3-band equalizer to optimize the acoustics in your vehicle, or quickly access the eight preset tone curves to adjust your sound on the fly.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

This Sony radio displays a "0" instead of "12" for the hour on its clock. Sony is aware of this, but currently there's no fix for this display quirk.

6.1" Touchscreen Monitor: The Sony XAV-68BT DVD receiver features a 6.1" widescreen (17:9) touchscreen LCD monitor. The WVGA LCD monitor has a high resolution of 800 (H) x 480 (V) x RGB; with 1,152,000 total pixels. The LCD monitor provides touchscreen controls with interactive video graphics and icons, making menu navigation easy.

    • Picture EQ: You can select a picture quality mode suitable for the interior brightness of your vehicle. You can choose from Dynamic, Standard, Theater, or Sepia. You can also change the screen's aspect ratio of the DVD receiver's LCD monitor to suit your video content. You can choose from Normal, Wide, Full, or Zoom.
    • Illumination Dimmer: To change the brightness of the display you can set the XAV-68BT to one of two dimmer modes; Dimmer Auto (dims the display automatically when you turn your vehicle's lights on), or Dimmer On (display always dim). You can adjust the dimmer level from -5 to +5.
    • 12-/24-Hour Clock: The head unit's clock can be set to a 12-hour or 24-hour mode. The clock will be visible during Tuner, Disc, USB, iPod, and Bluetooth playback; as well as from the main menu screen and sub menus. The head unit's clock will display a "0" instead of "12" for the hour; Sony is aware of this, but currently there's no fix for this display quirk.
Note: In addition to the head unit's touchscreen controls, the XAV-68BT also offers a 3-way rotary knob and "HOME-DSPL" push button along the left side of the screen.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the light green wire in the supplied harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. Video can only be displayed when the vehicle's parking brake is engaged. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view source information, song/artist information, and menus.

2-DIN Chassis: The Sony XAV-68BT has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is no mounting sleeve provided to Euro- or Custom-mount the in-dash receiver. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Sony XAV-68BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 3.0), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone (like Apple iPhone or Android) to the head unit. Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony XAV-68BT. Please visit Sony eSupport for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

SPP (Secure Simple Pairing): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Sony XAV-68BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically connects the two units.

Note: Bluetooth and pairing must be turned on in the head unit's menu prior to connection your Bluetooth-enabled device.

Hands-Free Communication (w/ External Mic): The Sony XAV-68BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled smartphone (like Apple iPhone, Android, and Blackberry). You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will be heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone device. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: You must enable the head unit's "Home/DISPLAY" button for voice command within the head unit's menu before using Siri Eyes Free. You can choose from 16:9, 4:3 Letter-Box, or 4:3 Pan&Scan.

Rear View Camera: The Sony XAV-68BT is equipped with a composite video Rear View Camera input. You can view a Normal or Reversed (mirror) image. The head unit features a function that automatically switches to the rear camera image (Rear View Camera In jack) when an optional rear camera (such as the 158XAR800C, sold separately) is installed on your vehicle. When your vehicle's shift lever is in the reverse position, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera. The purple/white wire (within the radio's harness), must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). Automatic video switching takes approximately 2.5 seconds.

Note: Audio from your music source will continue playing, while the back-up camera is displayed.
    Remote Control

IR Remote Control: The Sony multimedia XAV-68BT comes supplied with an IR emote control for easy wireless operation of the head unit. The included wireless remote allows you to control the basic functions (not Bluetooth) of the Sony head unit while keeping your eyes on the road.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The Sony XAV-68BT offers built-in steering wheel remote compatibility for non-CAN bus vehicles; like select Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Subaru, and Suzuki vehicles (the included 3-wire harness plugs into the head unit's OEM SWC input and will need to be hardwired behind vehicle's steering column). You can configure the steering wheel remote commands from the XAV-68BT's touchscreen. The head unit's OEM steering wheel remote control input is also compatible with optional steering wheel control adapters (sold separately; see accessory list). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

do the rca composite inputs on this stereo support converting digital signal to analog signal? i.e. use an hdmi to rca cable that transmits digital signal to the rca input, the stereo head unit then converts that digital signal to analog for viewing...
    nick  Jan 11, 2016

The RCA inputs on this receiver are expecting analog audio. They will not work with digital audio. We have some receivers with HDMI inputs that might work. You can call an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 to see if we have something that can work for you.

Is it true that this radio supports MP3 with bit rate of maximum 192 kbps only ?
    tibor  Jan 05, 2016

    A
Well, we play MP3's through the USB port and it seems to be fine in that mode, but I can't really answer the bit rate question. Overall however we are disappointed with this unit. It has had gremlins from day one and just keeps getting worse. All kinds of little problems like not pairing well with phones, clock keeps resetting, will come on at random times, dash lighting no longer works, etc. I have a JVC in the Acura and it has been flawless. The Sony, not so much.
    brian  Jan 09, 2016

The Sony XAV-68BT supports playback of MP3 audio files from a compatible CD disc or USB device with a bit rate of 48-192 kbps & sampling rate of 32-48 kHz.

Does an iphone charge when plugged in using a USB cord?
    jeff  Jun 17, 2015

    A
When plugged in with a USB cord the iPhone indicates that it is being charged. But when you use GPS or play music the battery percentage on the iPhone drops slowly and will not charge the phone. If you use no applications on the iPhone and keep the USB cord plugged in, it charges the phone but barely. On a two hour ride using no applications my iPhone only charged one percent

Hi there, I just bought this deck, installed it any think it's pretty good (definitely entry level though). My question is related to music played from a USB key. I have a SanDisk 32GB 3.0 key. I have tried putting music on it (MP3 files) but for some reason it only shows half or a third of whats actually on the key? What I mean is I put various folders with music in those folders (ie Rock folder with Queen, ACDC, Metallica etc... Dance folder with top 40 music in it and about 15 other folders with music in them) but it only displays a few of the folders when I put it in the deck. I then tried doing it a different way with the same sort of format (folders with music in them) but it does not display all the folders when I connect to the deck. Please help!!!!!

Check out pages 22-23 of the manual. It explains the file formats and formatting limitations of RAW data on a USB memory device. The functions are barely worth messing with. VERY limited. My suggestion is to skip thinking you are going to get this to work well for you and use an iPod.

That is the only complaint I have about this unit. It is bright and I have not found a way to dim it.
    hicountry  Mar 19, 2015
    A
You have to manually dim it unless you have a light wire in your wiring harness. My truck is a basic model that does not have that wire coming out of the factory harness therefore it does not dim with the lights in the dash. The radio has an auto dim feature but does not work that well in my opinion.
    william  Mar 19, 2015
    A
My personal Opinion, id does not dim a whole lot. The factory nav system in an Escalade didn't dim much either, so I was kind of used to it. Also, the radio is off to my right pretty far, in a full size truck. If you like things really dim, you might want to look into ways to dim it. I do like this head unit. But to me, it's been about the same as the factory radio. A little brighter than I'd like, but, I've driven all night in this truck a few times, and honestly, it didn't bother me....

What bluetooth protocols does it have? Also does it pull in the phone book contacts from an Android phone? (I have a smasung s4) Does it have a built in mic?

I'm not tech savvy enough to answer the exact blue tooth protocols question, but I can't say enough about how awesome Crutchfield's customer service is - if you call, you'll get a person (who speaks English!) and can definitely answer that. I bought this radio for my husband's truck as a Christmas present and he absolutely loves it. He has a samsung S4 active and he did say that the way it pulled the contacts in was a little goofy, so he just dials from the phone. I don't believe there is a built in mic, just the separate wired one, which he has clipped to his visor. The bluetooth calling works great, but I've noticed that the mic seems to pick up the caller's voice coming through the speakers - so basically, when I'm talking to him, I hear my own voice echoed back to me.

I have a Android phone. Is it possible to use USB with my phone and stereo? Also will this stereo use the screen of the phone like when AT&T Nav is in use?
    eric  Jan 26, 2015

Any phone or device works in the usb. The screen does not display anything from your phone. Only during a bluetooth connection your phone will have hands free control of phone functions. It will display call info, phonebook, and music info when streaming bluetoorh from you device. Will do voice commands also. But device must be paired and connected. The background screen is what will always be on the display. It will do mapquest or navigation turm by turn directions through the speakers but no map display.

It's designed to work with an ipod or iphone. I tried hooking up my Samsung S-4 via USB but it wouldn't bring up anything. Although the manual says it will work with USB devices including compatible Android phones and media players if it's set up right. It does great playing audio via bluetooth, which I have done with the S-4. I don't think you can display a phone screen on it. Couldn't find anything in the manual about it.
    mikel  Jan 27, 2015

Eric: As far as using the USB with your phone and stereo, basically yes. You have a screen menu where you can select which input device you want to play. The USB can be a cable connection from you phone or a stand-alone jump (thumb) drive, doesn't matter. As far as the navigation is concern I am not sure, but I kind of doubt it. When playing music from my Android the Sony screen is the only thing on the receiver, so it is not displaying my phone screen when playing music from the phone, so I doubt there is a video link. I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 and the usb will connect the phone to the stereo so you can play music, the bluetooth connection will also allow you to play music and, of course, answer the phone. As for the phone screen to be displayed on the stereo, I don't know - I have not tried that.

Has anyone installed one of these in a 2012 Toyota Tundra? If so-how does it sound with the standard speakers = basic radio package. Also - how hard was the install??

Mine was a sonata. Sounds good with regular speakers. Not to bad to install. One gotcha for the stearing wheel controlls even though i got the steering wheel package you have to program parts of it through the radio options.

I am not a radio aficionado, but to me it sounds fine. My son did the install and this is his take on that: The installation was fairly straightforward, several pieces of the dashboard had to be taken out in order to remove and replace the stock radio. I installed the microphone for the Bluetooth phone connection in the overhead console where the stock mic on higher end models would go. This involved removing the passenger side A pillar housing, and the overhead console. I made sure to route the wires behind the airbag, and I also took the glove box out to more easily route the wires from the head unit to the A pillar. Nothing was really anymore complicated than any other install that I've done. It took probably 4 hours, but I was also installing a backup camera, and had to do some extra work to get power and signal wires to the license plate.

I have NOT put it in a Tundra. I put mine in a 2004 Escalade. It sounds GREAT in the Escalade. Plays nice with the somewhat odd factory amps and factory antenna arrangement. The install is not "easy". Wiring the Gateway to the Head unit is a project. You will have both sets of instructions open to the technical portion, and you have to wire them together. A lot of it will be color for color, but not all of it, so you will want to make sure, and go one at a time, and make sure you're wiring front left speaker on the head unit to front left speaker on the gateway, and so on.... Also, my mount came with instructions, which were extremely vague, but I did find a much better instruction PDF on the internet, which cleared things up.... Also, when you get this whole gateway and head unit deal put together, jamming it all into the dash, was difficult for me. Even in a full size truck, where you'd think you have plenty of room, you have to get very creative to jam all these wires and this gateway in there.... I have no idea how people do this in small cars.... I really like the head unit, and feel I made the right decision to buy it. It is exactly what I wanted... I guess you have to assess your abilities. If you don't feel you can do it, you could easily take all the stuff you get from Crutchfield to a professional installer, and let them do it....

I just installed one of these in my 2005 Ford F150, sounds great with the factory setup, night and day difference from the stock stereo. Another great feature is that it has customizable and pre-set equalizer to fit anyone's listening needs. Ease of installation was easy, Crutchfield gives you all the required wiring diagrams and harness's that you need to go with it. You do have to do some wiring which consists of hooking the receiver harness to the specified vehicle adapter harness that comes with the order. It is pretty much color coded and there is a diagram. I also went ahead and purchased a back-up camera also to install with this unit and it works great. It was a little more difficult to hook up the rearview camera since it had to be connected to the rear light wire in the dash. Crutchfield technical support was a great help when I called them, told me exactly where to look and what color wire it was. I would highly recommend this for the price and quality. Bluetooth works great.

Yes, I've paired it with a 6 Plus and it's worked for bluetooth and streaming music. However, it only works when you're on the Bluetooth Audio setting, not the specific Pandora setting. You can only use the Pandora interface when you're plugged into the car. This is an annoying problem specific to iPhones, you can only stream Pandora through the Pandora screen with Android phones.

Andrew: This receiver works just great with my iPhone 6. You can easily control the phone with the Sony touchpad screen or your phone. I have the 128 GB iPhone 6 with most of my music collection on the phone. It sounds great through this receiver using either Bluetooth or when wired directly into the USB port.

It works very well with my iPhone 6. I use Siri to voice control my playlists while I'm in my vehicle so I have no need to access my playlists. This is a blue tooth enabled device so you won't have any issues playing music. If you would like it has a USB and AUX inputs. For the money you spend on a upgraded sound system from a dealer you could get a home theater system and a car audio system that will blow a stock system away and still have money to spare.

Hello, Ive read that this head unit goes into annoying flashing light mode, flashes Sony on the screen lights flicker etc. Is this true? Is there a way to disable it? Thanks!

I have not experienced any annoying light mode that you describe. The only thing that annoyed me at first was the demo mode that I disabled in the settings. I also had to find the setting to lower the background lighting when the headlights are on. My other complaint is the way it handles the phone book from my phone, it displays last name first instead of first name first like my phone is setup. Also there is no label next to the phone number when there is more than one number for the single entry. It also does not appear to store the phone book. The phone quality is good. I have not tried to figure out the above problems, just thought that is the way it works. I did not purchase it for the phone use, I purchased it for my backup camera and an upgrade from stock. Pandora works well and my phone is a Samsung Galaxy S4.

That has not happened to me. When playing Pandora overtime the song changes the screen goes black for about 1/2 a second. There is a demo mode that you can turn off. If you don't turn off the demo mode it displays advertisements for the head unit.
