Enjoy mobile video and high-end audio in your vehicle with the Sony XAVW1 in-dash DVD receiver. The XAVW1 fills the double-sized opening in your dash with a 7" touchscreen, perfect for watching movies when you're parked. General Features

Motorized Touchscreen Display: The Sony XAV-W1 is equipped with a fully motorized slide-down 7" TFT active matrix LCD monitor with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a pixel count of 1,152,000. The monitor electronically slides down for loading or ejecting a disc. It also has a 3-step adjustable viewing angle. This unit has touch screen controls with interactive video graphics, making menu navigation easy. The screen is non-glare and smudge-resistant. The monitors brightness can be adjusted from -5 to +5 and features an auto-dimming function via the unit's illumination wire when your vehicle's lights are turned on. The monitor's aspect ratio can be changed to one of the following - Normal, Wide, Full or Zoom.

2-DIN Chassis: The Sony XAV-W1 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double DIN" or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. Unlike many in-dash monitors, there is no hideaway box; all the inputs and outputs are included within the unit's chassis. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. As always, please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

Front Panel Controls: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons along the bottom edge of the screen. You can change the illumination color of the buttons to better match the interior lighting of your vehicle. You can choose from the following colors - Aqua, Purple, Pink, Red, Green, Yellow, Orange, or White.

Background Screens: The background screen is displayed during audio playback. You can select from 3 types of backgrounds - Screen1, Screen2, or Screen3. Each background screen will consist of a wallpaper and a spectrum analyzer pattern. You can choose from one of four wallpaper settings and three spectrum analyzer patterns for each Background Screen mode.

Custom Wallpapers: During video/image disc playback you can capture images and store them (up to 4 images) to set as your custom wallpaper for the unit's Background Screen. You can also capture an image from a connected auxiliary video device.

Picture EQ: You can select a picture quality suitable for the interior brightness of your vehicle. You can choose from the following settings.

  • Dynamic: vivid picture with bright, clear colors
  • Theater: brightens the monitor; suitable for darkly-lit movies
  • Sepia: applies a sepia tone to the picture
  • Standard: standard picture quality
  • Custom1/Custom2: user-adjustable settings that allow you to manually adjust the monitors Color Tone, Color and Brightness levels

Radio Tuning: The XAV-W1 allows you to manual tune or seek tune AM/FM stations. In the Local Seek Mode, the unit will only tune in stations with very strong signals during Seek tuning. The Mono Mode allows you improve poor FM reception by selecting a monaural signal instead of a stereo signal. The radio features 5 memory bands to store and receive AM/FM stations. You can store up to 6 presets each in FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1 and AM2. Other tuner features include:

  • Best Tuning Memory (BTM): This feature automatically selects stations with the best signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency. You can select from FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.
  • Manual Tuning: You can manually tune and find your favorite radio stations one by one for FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.
  • Auto Tuning: You can use the seek button to help you search quickly through the available stations and then choose your own presets from these available stations.
  • IF (Intermediate Frequency): You can choose "Auto" to narrow automatically the reception frequency to eliminate noise, or "Wide" to always hear FM stereo broadcasts in stereo and with full frequency signal reception.

Drive S II: The Sony XAV-W1 features the Drive S II chassis platform. Drive S II includes the CD mechanism, audio stages, 12 volt power supply, and tuner section. The CD mechanism includes a suspension to resist shocks, a motor that draws less power, and a fast low-current pickup that improves durability and CD/DVD playback accuracy. The 52W Peak x 4-channel S-MOSFET Power IC produces clearer, more accurate sound, less distortion, and a higher signal-to-noise ratio than previous designs.

EQ7: The sound quality can be adjusted using the built-in 7-band EQ with 7 preset EQ curves including a custom EQ setting. The presets include the following settings:

Center Frequency → Preset ↓ 62Hz 157Hz 396Hz 1kHz 2.5kHz 6.34kHz 16kHz

Multi-Channel Decoder: The Sony XAV-W1 features six preamp outputs - stereo Front, stereo Rear, mono Center and mono Subwoofer. Along with its built-in 5.1 surround sound decoder, this allows the unit to support Dolby Digital/DTS and Dolby Pro Logic II. Dolby Digital/DTS offers 5.1-channels of discrete surround. Dolby Pro Logic II produces 5 full-bandwidth output from 2-channel sources. This is done using an advanced, high-purity matrix surround decoder that extracts the spatial properties of the original recording without adding any new sound or tonal colorations. The XAV-W1 supports two Dolby Pro Logic II modes.

  • Music: provides a deep, wide sound space to stereo audio recordings
  • Movie: provides enhanced sound field direction that approaches the quality of discrete 5.1-channel sound to stereo television shows and all programs encoded in Dolby Surround

Intelligent Time Alignment: This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it where you sit in your vehicle. You can choose from the following Listening Position modes - Front left, Front right, Front center, All or Custom. The Custom Listening Position mode allows you to precisely calibrate your listening position from each speaker so that the sound delay reaches the listener more correctly. The distance from each speaker to your custom listening position is adjustable in 2 cm steps from 0 to 400 cm.

Center Speaker Organizer (CSO): The CSO feature allows you to create a virtual center speaker when you don't have the center-channel preamp output connected so you can still fully enjoy surround sound in your vehicle.

Speaker Level: This unit allows you to adjust the volume level of each connected speaker so you get an even sound throughout your vehicle.

Crossover Filter: The XAV-W1 features built-in Low-pass and High-pass crossover filters. The HPF can be set to 80 or 120Hz and effects your connected front and rear speakers. The LPF can also be set to 80 or 120Hz but only effects the subwoofer preamp output.

Zone x Zone: Activating the Zone x Zone function allows you to simultaneously listen to separate sources in the front and rear of your vehicle. You can choose any source for the Front zone while the Rear zone is restricted to disc only playback.

Security Code: This unit has a security function to discourage theft. You can enter your own custom 4-digit number as your security code. Once the security function is activated, you need to enter the security code to turn on the unit after re-installing the unit in another vehicle or after charging your vehicle's battery.

Remote Control: The XAV-W1 is equipped with an IR wireless remote control (RM-X160) which can operate the unit. The XAV-W1 must be initially powered on by pressing the "SRC" key on the unit's front panel.

DVD/CD Playback

Disc Compatibility: The built-in DVD/CD player can play back the following video disc formats - DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+R DL, DVD+RW and Video CD. Compatible audio discs include CD (including CD-Text discs), CD-R, CD-RW and SA-CD. This unit cannot play 3" (8 cm) discs.

SA-CD Playback: Super Audio CD is a new high-quality audio disc standard where music is recorded in the DSD (Direct Stream Digital ) format where as conventional CDs are recorded in the PCM format. The DSD format, using a sampling frequency 64 times higher than that of a conventional CD and with 1-bit quantization, achieves both a wide frequency range and a wide dynamic range across the audible frequency range and so provides music reproduction extremely faithful to the original sound. This unit allows you to change the sound quality of Super Audio CD playback by switching the sampling frequency. You can choose from High Quality (outputs at 176.4 kHz) or Standard Quality (outputs at 44.1 kHz)

MP3/WMA/JPEG Compatibility: In addition to the above listed compatible discs, this unit can also play MP3, WMA and JPEG files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+R DL and DVD+RW discs. For CD, the files should be recorded using ISO 9660 level 1/2, Joliet, or Romeo formats. For DVD, the UDF Bridge format (combined UDF and ISO 9660) should be used. The unit will recognize up to 256 albums (folders) and a total of 2000 files and albums on a disc. ID3 tags up to 63 characters can be displayed. You can list up to five tracks or images at one time on the unit's screen for faster searches. JPEG files can be viewed in a slide show fashion with selectable intervals of 5, 10, 20 or 40 seconds.

  • CD/SA-CD/VCD/MP3/WMA:
    • Track Search: starts playing from a selected track

Monitor Type: You can select a 16:9 Wide, 4:3 Letter Box or 4:3 Pan Scan aspect ratio for the integrated monitor and an optional connected external monitor to suit your viewing needs.

DVD Level: The audio output level differs depending on the recorded format. To reduce the volume level differences between disc and source, you can ad-just audio output level according to the recorded format. The default level is set for PCM format and the level for Dolby Digital and DTS format can be adjusted separately from the default level. The Dolby Level and DTS level is adjustable in single steps between -10 to +10.

Audio DRC: This feature makes the sound clear when the volume is low. You can select from two DRC modes - Standard or Wide Range.

Restricted scenes can be blocked or replaced with different scenes when a parental control compatible DVD is played. The unit features 8 rating levels protected by a custom 4-digit password.

Karaoke Function: The XAV-W1 features a 3.5mm microphone input attached to a 36" cord on the rear-chassis of the unit so you can connect an optional microphone and enjoy karaoke. External Device Controls

iPod Ready: You can connect an iPod to this unit and control it via the touch-panel controls and remote. The optional XA-110IP or XA-120IP iPod Control Interface is required and plugs into the unit's UniLink bus-connector. The XA-110IP/XA120IP allows an iPod (3rd generation or newer, but not the iPod shuffle) digital music player with a dock connector to be connected to and controlled by the XAV-W1. All the iPod buttons will be disabled when connected to this adapter and it will be controlled from the XAV-W1's touch-panel. With this interface, you'll be able to play your iPod music files through the XAV-W1 and have all the titling information appear on the Sony's display.

Note: The XA-110IP or XA-120IP will not charge the iPod nano 4th generation and the iPod touch 2nd generation.

Satellite Radio Ready: There are currently three ways to connect an optional satellite radio tuner to the XAV-W1:

  • XM Satellite Radio: To receive XM Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional CNP2000UC XM Mini Tuner and the Sony CNP-SON1 adapter cable (package item number 700XMSON1).
  • SIRIUS Satellite Radio: To receive SIRIUS Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional SCC1 SiriusConnect vehicle tuner and the optional SNYSC1 Sony interface module (package item number 700SIRSONY).
  • A/V Input: A portable satellite radio receiver, such as the Delphi SkyFi3 or SIRIUS Sportster, can be connected to the head unit via one of the A/V auxiliary inputs or the Sony XA-300 UniLink auxiliary input adapter (item number 158XA300).

Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

HD Radio Ready: The Sony XAV-W1 is compatible with Sony's optional XT-100HD add-on HD Tuner (sold separately) through its UniLink Bus connection. HD Radio technology, where available, offers higher quality sound than conventional analog broadcasts and receives text data. HD Radio provides FM broadcasts that are equal to CD sound quality and AM broadcasts that are as good as analog FM stereo broadcasts. HD Radio also provides a variety of data, including station name, song title, artist name, album name, etc. Once connected, all AM and FM broadcasts are received by the XT-100HD. HD appears as an additional source, with five preset banks; HD1 (FM1), HD2 (FM2), HD3 (FM3), HD4 (AM1), and HD5 (AM2). In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

Changer Controls: This unit is compatible with Sony UniLink CD/MP3 and MD changers and allows for playback and control.

Multiple Changer Control: A maximum of 5 CD changers, 5 CD/MP3 changers, or 5 MD changers may be connected to this receiver. When connecting CD, CD/MP3 and MD changers, you may connect up to a total of 7 changers (but there must not be more than 5 of one type of changer). When connecting more than one changer to this receiver, you must use the Sony XA-C40 (item number 158XAC40) source selectors (up to three).

Input and Output Notes

Video Lock Out: The video signal is locked out to prevent the viewing of a video source on the XAV-W1's monitor while the vehicle is in motion. You will need to tap into the vehicle's parking brake light circuit, splicing in the unit's light green wire from the main power/speaker harness. Once connected, the video signal will only be visible on the unit's monitor when the parking brake is applied.

A/V Inputs: The XAV-W1 has three Audio/Video auxiliary inputs with stereo RCA audio and composite video jacks for use with a VCR or video game console. The three Audio/Video inputs can be used for audio/video sources or audio-only sources. A fourth Aux input is a video only RCA jack, which can be used for a rear view camera.

Note: The third A/V input shares its stereo RCA audio jacks with the unit's UniLink bus-connector. You can use these audio inputs for either the third A/V input or along with the UniLink bus-connector but not both together.

Rear View Camera: When the vehicle is put into reverse gear, the monitor will automatically switch to the video from the optional rear view camera. In order for the video to automatically switch, the purple/white wire in the A/V input harness needs to be spliced into the vehicle's back-up lamp circuit.

Rear Monitor Output: The XAV-W1 features an output that allows you to feed audio and video signal to a rear monitor. With the unit's Zone x Zone feature, you can watch a DVD on the rear monitor while the front passengers enjoy the radio (AM, FM, or optional XM) or an auxiliary source.

UniLink Port: The XAV-W1 is equipped with Sony's proprietary UniLink bus-connector for connection of Sony compatible CD-changers, XM Radio Tuners, HD Radio Tuners and iPod interfaces.

Optional Auxiliary Input: In addition to the A/V inputs, you can connect another auxiliary audio device (such as a portable digital memory player, cassette or MiniDisc when used with the optional XA-300 UniLink Auxiliary Input Adapter (item number 158XA300). The XA-300 uses the UniLink and Bus Audio inputs on the back of the receiver, and allows you to connect an optional CD/MD changer in addition to the auxiliary audio source.

MIC Input: The XAV-W1 features a 3.5mm microphone input attached to a 36" cord on the rear chassis of the unit for use with an optional microphone.

6-Channel Preamp Output: The Sony XAV-W1 features stereo Front and Rear preamp outputs as well as mono Center-Channel and Subwoofer outputs. The Front and Rear channels can be balanced and faded from -10 to +10 while the volume of the Center-Channel and Subwoofer outputs can be adjusted independently from -6 to +6.

Remote Input: The unit has a 3.5mm mini-jack input on the rear chassis for the optional Sony RM-X4S wired rotary commander. In addition, the PAC SWI-PS steering wheel remote interface is compatible with this head unit. The SWI-PS interface allows you to retain the use of your steering wheel and/or rear seat radio controls when replacing the factory head unit in select vehicles with this Sony head that features wired remote capability. In some GM vehicles, this adapter allows you to retain heater control buttons as well. The SWI-PS is compatible with over 95% of the vehicles made from 1986 to the present. Compatible vehicles include many Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hummer, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercury, Mini, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Suzuki, Toyota, and Volkswagen vehicles and Harley Davidson motorcycles. Great Unit, Great Price

Written By Jake, Asheboro, NC on Sunday, December 06, 2009

I installed this receiver in my 2005 F-150 Supercrew (with factory sub) about four days ago. Love it, Love it, Love it! Very easy install with everything Crutchfield supplies. My factory sound was already good, but after installing this unit, the factory set-up rivals much more expensive "built" systems. A lot of tuning and sound tweaking can be performed from the touchscreen (5.1 surround, EQ7, Dolby Pro, Center and Subs, and Intelligent Time Alignment). The receiver's radio reception is very good, and CD's sound wonderful. Everything about the screen and DVD playback is top notch, A+. Sounds like watching movies at the theater. Video quality is perfect. The instructions are clear and easy to understand, although you really do not them as the unit is very user friendly. Remote is awesome and works well also. Nothing negative in my opinion, this is my favorite receiver I've owned to date. Perfect customer service from Crutchfield as well!!

Good graphics, everything else not so good

Written By Neal, MD on Sunday, June 21, 2009

The graphics on this are great, good for playing dvds. My ipod is a big part of my driving and this headunit does not provide easy control of the ipod. It is very slow to interact with the ipod, doesnt charge 2nd gen itouch, when u turn off the car and turn back on, ipod resets to first song.

Steering wheel integration (PAC-SWI) doesnt fit into the headunit, you have to "modify" the input jack from steering buy stripping off some of the rubber in order for it to fit, the radio signal is sketchy
overall dont recommend this

Outstanding

Written By Fideaux, Dallas, Texas on Thursday, June 11, 2009

Just installed the unit in my 2009 Ridgeline, fantastic controls easy to use, video playback is unbelievable. The sound is more than I expected, I have not changed the factory speakers yet but with the new unit they sound pretty good. I also installed the Sirius tuner, the screen for sat radio is small but if you know what you like to listen to it is not bad. Easy install with all of the parts supplied by Crutchfield. Would recommend this to someone who does not need a navigation system.

Sony XAVW1

Written By Spencer, St. Louis, MO on Friday, March 27, 2009

Overall I hate this headunit. It freezes up all the time the iPod interface is terrible. Theres a big screen and yet it won't even display the whole song name. If you plan to use satellite radio with this and the iPod interface you can't use the pass through connection because it's not compatiable. You have to buy an adapter. Some good things about this headunit are the good graphics and large screen. Other than that I have yet to find anything good about it.

GET EXTENDED PROTECTION

Written By Scott, SLC, UT on Monday, March 09, 2009

Overall I've loved this unit but last month the dvd stopped playing dvd's. The only reason I'm writing this review is because I would hate for yours to die on you after spending this much. This unit is phenominal. I have 5.1 set up with pleanty of subs- very easy to adjust and very responsive. Of all the previous negative comments I say it all depends on who is installing and who is running the unit. iPod might not be all its cracked up to be- I'll find out I just got iPod last week.

good dvd player/ bad subwoofer control

Written By no, flora vista, nm on Sunday, January 18, 2009

This unit is great for the kids. If you like your music loud like I do with pleanty of bass get a different deck. There is no control for your sub woofers, if you adjust your amp to listen to rock and decide to listen to rap you have to pull over and readjust your EQ on your amp because there is not enough adjustment options on the deck its self.

Great, easy install for a first timer.

Written By chris, Indiana on Friday, July 11, 2008

This was my first after market radio install so with just knowledge of other electrical systems i had no problem installing this radio, the supplied mounting kit was a bit too tight for the screen to come back in, so a little filing was needed. Took about 30 minutes - 1 hour to get everything crimped, checked and ready to put in. First impressions, it takes like 2 seconds to fully boot up, for the buttons to light up and everything, so i was a little frightened at first. Then i saw the gorgeous screen! how beautiful, all of these options it gives you, the load times are not bad at all, everything is crisp and clear, i have only found one button that has a little trouble on the touchscreen and ill just have to calibrate it with the built in software. This head unit has so many features, tuning, custom wallpaper, back up camera, whole system utilization, so many possibilites to expand. The ipod interface for it works very well, i simply connected the bus plug and red/white cords and routed it to my glove compartment, no problems, boots right up. I dont know why that other guy was having trouble. Like stated before, this system is great for someone that doesnt need nav, but i believe you can ad navigation so try it! great product!

Best Graphics and Features for the Audiophile

Written By jim, Virginia Beach, VA on Saturday, February 16, 2008

Better graphics than the competitors. Vivid, clear, and detailed.
Nice graphic EQ and listening positions.
This product is the best for audio fanatics who do not need GPS.
Works well with the Sirius SIR-SNY1 interface. character display is limited , but understandable.
Touchpanel is well laid out, easy to use, and intuitive.

Sony XAVW1

Written By mark, Joliet, IL on Wednesday, January 16, 2008

Great Product! Very simple to use. Big touchscreen with many features. Only con I would say is the sub-out is weak. I had to install a seperate switch to control my subwoofer. Overall though sound options are solid. Never used the Ipod with this so I can't offer an opinion on this feature. Just burn a Mp3 DVD and you can hold 50+ albums on one disc. Great Price as well. Enjoy!

Great Unit as long as you don't plan to use it with an iPod

Written By NickBrewer, Anchorage, Alaska on Thursday, January 03, 2008

I am very impressed with the performance and ease of use of the XAVW1 with one exception, Sony's XA-110iP iPod Controller is totally useless with the XAVW1.

The XAVW1 has a very large, bright screen and the touchscreen controls are very easy to use and logically arranged, it is just a shame that the XA-110iP makes almost no use of these features to make it easy to control an iPod with this unit.

So if you plan to use an iPod to store your music and play it through your headunit, I would advise looking further, the Sony solution just doesn't cut it.
