About the Sony MEX-XB100BT

Ken Nail

Power. Double the power.

You don't have to be a Star Fleet engineer to crave more power, and Sony's MEX-XB100BT CD receiver delivers enough punch to kick your car's audio system to Warp 9 and beyond. Tucked behind the face of this receiver, you'll find a groundbreaking Class-D amplifier that delivers 40 watts RMS per channel — 100 watts of peak power — equivalent to what you'll find in many external car amplifiers. And check out this cool feature — Subwoofer Direct Connection lets you use the output of one the receiver's two rear channels to drive a small subwoofer. That's great way to add some extra bass kick to your ride, perfect for small compacts or truck cabs, where space for an amp may be limited. No doubt, this Sony has the soundpower to take your car audio to infinity and beyond.

Since even raw power deserves a gentle touch, Sony complements this beefy output with a sophisticated suite of sound shapers, including frequency filters, bass enhancers, time alignment, and a 10-band equalizer.

Bluetooth® that goes beyond run-of-the-mill

Bluetooth adds the convenience of hands-free calling and audio streaming. Sony makes it easy to set up with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. Just touch selected devices with NFC to the N-mark on the knob and you'll be ready to go. With compatible iPhones you'll enjoy Siri® Eyes Free. Just press the volume key to activate voice commands for making calls, setting up reminders, and other features. And don't miss a text while driving — Siri Eyes Free can read out text messages while you drive, and even let you compose responses while your hands are on the wheel.

Sony's SongPal app lets you connect through Bluetooth to use voice control for finding your favorite music tracks, and to provide touchscreen control from your smartphone to find sources, access apps, and even customize your sound settings.

Plug and play with USB

When you plug in your Android or iOS device you'll be able to rock with your favorite music tracks in a jiffy. The latest generation of smartphones can suck a lot of power, so the USB port kicks out 1.5 amps to keep your screens glowing bright.

Super styling

Whether you want your dash subtle or suave, you're covered. Sony's Dynamic Color Illuminator offers up to 35,000 combinations of colors in two different lighting zones, and will even pulse in time to the beat or volume of your music. Cool details like a nifty sliding USB port cover adda touch of style.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Installation Note: We recommend running a dedicated constant power wire to the battery for optimal performance from this Sony's amp — we offer an inexpensive wiring kit for this installation. This Sony's high-powered amp won't work in systems where an outboard factory amplifier is still active.

High-Power Digital Amplifier: A built-in 4-channel class-D amplifier delivers up to a maximum of 40 watts RMS (100 watts Peak) of  power per channel; approximately twice that of most head units, and comparable to the power output of a compact, external digital amplifier. The internal digital amplifier features a space-saving design that helps keep the receiver slim and compact.

Note: Because of its high-powered amplifier design, the Sony MEX-XB100BT does require that a separate +12V constant power wire is run to the battery with a separate inline 15A fuse in vehicles with lower than a 15A fuse protecting the factory radio. Check out the "Accessories" tab for wiring kit. This Sony high-powered receiver won't work in systems where an outboard factory amplifier is still active.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the Sony MEX-XB100BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the MEX-XB100BT are as follows:

    • Continuous Power Output: 40 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 100 watts x 4-channels (400 total watts)

6ch/5V Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Sony MEX-XB100BT is equipped with 5-volt Front, Rear, & Sub pre-amp outputs giving you the ability to connect external amplifiers to your car stereo system. The unit's subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The subwoofer preamp output features a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the low-pass crossover. You can even adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments. In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

Note: You can connect a subwoofer to this head unit without the need of a separate power amplifier. Simply connect a single subwoofer (4-8 ohm) directly to head unit's left or right rear speaker leads (but not both). Approximate power output for the direct subwoofer connection is 60 watts RMS. Same subwoofer controls apply.

High-Pass Filter: The front & rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the high-pass crossover.

Advanced Sound Engine: Sony's Advanced Sound Engine creates an ideal in-car soundfield with digital signal processing. Advanced Sound Engine contains the following features: EQ10, ClearAudio+, Listening Position, Mega Bass, Rear Bass Enhancer (RBE), Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE), Advanced Auto Volume (AAV), and Loudness.

    • EQ10: Select from a variety of EQ presets like R&B, Rock, Pop, Dance, Hip-Hop, Electronic, Jazz, Soul, Country, Custom, or Off (Flat). The Custom mode allows you to make your own equalizer settings. You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of 10 different frequency bands - Band1 (32Hz), Band2 (63Hz), Band3 (125Hz), Band4 (250Hz), Band5 (500Hz), Band6 (1khz), Band7 (2khz), Band8 (4kHz), Band9 (8kHz), and Band10 (16kHz).
    • ClearAudio+: ClearAudio+ reproduces sound by optimizing the digital signal with the Sony recommended sound settings.
    • Listening Position: This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, or Off. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far.
    • Mega Bass: Activate the Mega Bass sound setting to give your favorite tunes a bass boost. By utilizing DSP technologies, Mega Bass is able to efficiently enhance low frequency tones to deliver resonant, full-bodied bass that adds real depth to your audio.
    • Rear Bass Enhancer (RBE): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
    • Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE): DSEE improves digitally compressed music files by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process.
    • Advanced Auto Volume (AAV) + Loudness: This feature adjusts the playback volume level of all playback sources to the optimum level. Loudness reinforces bass and treble for clear sound at low volume levels.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Sony MEX-XB100BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 3.0), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.5 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony MEX-XB100BT. Please visit Sony eSupport for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Simple Pairing: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Sony MEX-XB100BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. You can register up to nine Bluetooth enabled devices with the Sony head unit, but only one can be connected and used at a time. Once paired, the MEX-XB100BT will automatically re-connect to your device when in close proximity. The head unit also offers unique pairing for Android smartphones and iPhones to make Bluetooth pairing even easier.

    • Near Field Communication (for Android): Android (OS 4.0+) smartphones that have Near Field Communication (NFC) pair simply by touching the Android device's NFC tag to the head unit's NFC tag on it rotary-knob. For older Android smartphones with OS 4.0 or lower, download the NFC Easy Connect app from Google Play to use the head unit's NFC pairing function.
    • USB Pairing (for iPhone): You can pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Sony head unit via USB and activating the Bluetooth function on your Apple device.

Hands-Free Communication w/ External Mic: The Sony MEX-XB100BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The controls of the MEX-XB100BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. And thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the MEX-XB100BT provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered manually or automatically (between 3-10 seconds) through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's LCD. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the MEX-XB100BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways.
      • Entering Phone #: Allows you to manually dial a phone number using the unit's control dial.
      • Preset Dial: You can store up to 6 contacts in the preset dial for quick dialing.
      • Phone Book: You can store up to 1,000 contacts in the unit's phone book. Up to a 40 character name can be input for each contact.
      • Call History: The unit will store the last 20 calls, allowing you to select a previous phone number quickly from the list.
      • Voice Dial: You can make a call using the voice tags stored on your connected cellular phone.
      • Redial: Use to easily redial the last number you called.
Note: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the level of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 11' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone comes with a mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.515" (depth).

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ AAC): The Sony MEX-XB100BT supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or audio player, plus song/artist information display and support for AAC music streaming.

    • Stored Music & Music Apps: You are able to stream your stored music library on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, as well as music apps downloaded on your smartphone to the Sony MEX-XB100BT for playback.
    • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the MEX-XB100BT offers support of AAC.  By supporting AAC, the MEX-XB100BT offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
    • Music Browsing: In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat) for both stored music and music apps, the MEX-XB100BT provides a Search List of your stored music by Category or Playlist (AVRCP 1.4 phones only; which includes Android 4.0+ and iPhone 5.0+).
    • Song/Artist Information: The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (not compatible with all apps).
Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control (for iPhone): When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the Sony MEX-XB100BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply activate the "voice dial" function on the MEX-XB100BT to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. You can even ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the MEX-XB100BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone).
    Disc & USB Playback

Disc Compatibility: The Sony MEX-XB100BT features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs. The unit supports the playback of MP3, WMA, and AAC music files on a CD-R or CD-RW disc.

    • Off Insert/Eject: A CD can be inserted or ejected with the power off. The head unit will automatically begin disc playback, when a disc is inserted with the receiver set to a different source.
    • Auto Reload: The CD player will automatically reinsert the disc if it's ejected, but not removed for 20 seconds or more.

    App + Remote Control

SongPal (Music Center) App: Download Sony's free SongPal (Music Center)app onto your Bluetooth-paired iPhone (10.0+) or Android (4.2+) smartphone and take control of the Sony MEX-XB100BT head unit right from your mobile device. You'll enjoy control over basic head unit functions, as well as navigation and seamless access to all your sources, music, apps, and more from your smartphone. The SongPal (Music Center) app also integrates Apple iOS and Android apps into the selectable source list of the Sony MEX-XB100BT and lets you launch apps from the head unit. In addition the app can also be used to help customize sound and display settings of the Sony receiver.

    • Receiver Sources: From the SongPal (Music Center) app on your smartphone device you can access and select the head unit's Tuner (AM/FM), CD, USB, Bluetooth, and Aux sources. Once an app is selected within the SongPal (Music Center) app, your smartphone's screen will divert to selected app. Audio of that source will be played through the MEX-XB100BT; any visual data will only be displayed by your iPhone or Android device. Basic playback functions such as Play/Pause and Next Track are available from the head unit; advanced control functions are still done from your smartphone device.
    • Volume & Sound Adjustments: You can access the head unit's sound menu and make adjustments from the app on your iPhone or Android device. Sound adjustments included Volume Up/Down, Balance/Fader, ClearAudio+, EQ, Mega Bass, Listening Position, DSEE, Auto Volume, and Sub Level.

Make changes to the preset color of the LCD and/or button illumination, as well as activate or deactivate Sound Synchronization.
    • Voice Recognition (Android only): You can use voice commands to ask for directions from Google maps or to play a particular song/artist in your smartphone's music library. You can even assign a music application within the SongPal (Music Center)app as a voice tag, so you can access it by simply speaking the name of the application. While using voice commands there will still be times where you have to make a selection on your smartphone's touchscreen.
    • Notification Readout (Android only): Exclusive to Android devices, incoming SMS/E-mail and Twitter/Facebook/Calendar notifications are automatically read aloud through the MEX-XB100BT and your vehicle's speakers to keep you safe and in touch. Display Features

Detachable Face w/ Caution Alarm: The Sony MEX-XB100BT features a detachable face for theft prevention. If you turn the ignition switch to the Off position without detaching the head unit's front-panel, the caution alarm will sound for a few seconds. The alarm will only sound if the unit's built-in amplifier is used. No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Dynamic Color Illuminator (35,000 colors): Dynamic Color Illuminator lets you match the head unit's LCD & button illumination to complement your existing vehicle lighting components. You can select from 15 preset colors or a customized color (R-G-B). You can choose to use the same color for the LCD display and button illumination, or use a separate color for each one. The unit's Dynamic Color Illuminator offers the following advance features.

    • Sound Synchronization: With selectable Sound Synchronization, the timing of the color change is synchronized with the audio source. The color changes according to synchronization of playing music.
    • Motion Display: This feature shows moving patterns and a spectrum analyzer on the display when turned on.
    • White Menu: You can display the menu more clearly (White text) without concern for the unit's other color settings.
    • Start White: When you power-on the head unit, the color of the unit's display and buttons turn white and then the color changes to your chosen customize color. You can enjoy this effect whenever the source is turned on.
    • Black Out: Turns off the head unit's LCD & key illumination automatically for any source when there is no operation for approximately 5 seconds; press any button on the unit to re-activate illumination.
Brightness: To change the brightness of the display you can set the MEX-XB100BT to one of three dimmer modes; Dimmer Auto (dims the display automatically when you turn your vehicle's lights on), Dimmer Off (deactivates the dimmer), and Dimmer On (display always dim).

Auto Scroll: The Auto Scroll feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc or device.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Source/Off button once will switch sources. Pressing and holding the Source/Off button for one second will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. To turn the unit off completely, you must press and hold the Source/Off button for two seconds.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

Demo Mode: The head unit's demo mode can be turned On or Off.

Will using a battery cutoff switch require reprogramming the unit each time its powered on again? I'm custom mounting this in an antique car and I disconnect the battery between uses.
    eric  Dec 23, 2017
    4 answers
    A
I do not think so. I've had my power disconnected a few times for maintenance and the unit seemed to keep the pre-programmed stations. Of course it might depend how long you have the unit uncharged. Best of luck. It is a great unit.
    tracy  Dec 24, 2017
    A
I'm rather sure it will. You'll need to keep a continual charge to the non-switched lead. You could do that with a separate circuit that was not disconnected with the car's battery terminal. I don't know if that would bleed the battery very much or if it would nullify the reason for disconnecting to begin with.

I recently bought this unit and connected it to my battery as suggested. As well as replaced my factory speakers with new 6" infinity kappa speakers. I am experiencing a slight static sound when I use bluetooth, usb, or the other options given. Even when the music is paused it still occurs, although it's only noticable when the unit is turned up it still bothers me. Any ideas on what this could be and how I could fix. Is it possible it could be my speakers?

Hi, I purchased this stereo and am using the Subwoofer Direct mode, but I have a (hopefully simple) question... What is the difference between the "modes" under Subwoofer Direct? NOT the slope, but the actual "modes." There is 1, 2, 3, and off. I can hear an audible difference between the three, but I dont know what the modes actually do, and it doesnt say anywhere in the manual or on Sony's own website...

My stereo stopped working last week about 14 months after I bought it. I replaced it with a cheaper pioneer and it sounds so much better. I wouldn't recommend the Sony MEX - hard to use controls, poor sound, poor display. Remote is good for volume; that's about it.

    Q
I currently have the Sony MEX-XB100BT BLUE TOOTH AUDIO SYSTEM, that I am installing in my 2011 Ford F150 XLT EcoBoost Extended cab. The Stereo has a class D amplifier with it. I am going to run the 12 Gauge power directly to the battery, along with installing an inline fuse with a 15A fuse in it to match the fuse in the amplifier. I'm going to ground the ground wire in a spot some where behind the dash. My question is this: I bought a PAC radio installation smart harness, and I'm wanting to know since there is no power or ground wire coming off the Sony harness itself, do I just leave the power and ground alone coming from my PAC harness, and tape them off? The power and ground on the sony is attached to the class D amplifier only, and not the harness itself so that why I ask. It might be a dumb question, but I just didn't know if it would cause the pac harness to not work properly without the ground and power wire being in use. I dont have any where to run them to. Also, the class D amp has a 15A fuse in it. So when doing an inline fuse, I would want to run a 15A fuse to match it right? Or does it need to be a different size fuse. Any answer would be greatly appreciated. I just want to make sure I have everything right when going to install this that way I don't run into a bunch of re-work. Thank you!!! Derrick T.

can you run the internal amp and rca outs at the same time? For a total of 8 speakers using the 4 channels in the stereo to run 4 speakers and the rca outs to run 4 more speakers?
    tracy  Mar 18, 2017
    1 answer
    A
No unfortunately you can't. It's a great head unit if your short on space and don't want a separate 4 channel amp. I have this and a mono amp with sub and it sounds really good but in another vehicle I went with a basic head unit, separate 4 channel amp, and a mono amp and it sounds amazing. If you've got 8 speakers to run I believe JL audio has an 8 channel amp or get 2 4 channel amps and set each amp for 2 channel input so 1 amp will control your 4 left speakers and the other amp your 4 right speakers. Hope this helps.

    Q
Can the front and rear channels be bridged to power a front left and front right at 80w 4 ohm each?
    christian  Feb 06, 2017
    2 answers
    A
I'm not completely sure but I believe only the rear channels are bridgeable. When you do bridge the rear channels you do get 80 rms watts but a low pass filter is used so you'll have little or no high's coming from the rear speakers, all bass. So if I had to guess I'd say no you can't. It's a great head unit but I should have gone with a regular cheaper head unit and added a 4 channel amp. A 40 watt 4 channel external amp will sound better than the Sony xb100bt by itself. Hope this helps

First off this radio has a very good amplifier in it 100x4 @ 4OHM or 40wRMSx4. I'm using a 12g power wire and ground to power the unit. I have two 8in 2OHM (Sony only supports 4OHM speakers) in the doors. I have My local stereo show metered the unit at 2OHMs @ 60wRMSx4 (possibly 125wx4 max watts) and the sound was clean and stable. I think this possibly voids the warranty. Be sure you have a proper sized power and ground. You cannot get 100x4 watts with the standard small wire in you're dash. I hope this helps at all. Stay safe and use a digital multimeter.

What cables do I need to extend the power and ground cables??
    casey  Nov 15, 2016
    4 answers
    A
Minimum of 12 AWG recommended for this, fused for 15 amps.
    michael  May 04, 2017
    A
Since the power and ground cables come with bare ends to tap into your vehicle's power, I would think that wire equal to the gauge of the supplied wires, color coded for reference and with appropriate wire connectors would be all that's needed.
    mary  Nov 16, 2016
    A
If you are planning on extending any cables just make sure to use the same gauge wire and use proper scotch locks or a terminal strip properly mounted.
    jose m  Nov 16, 2016
    A
No special cables, just match the size of the wires you want to extend. Size meaning match the wire gage (AWG). You dont want to use a small wire where more power is going to be used, the wire will fry and cause a fire if too small. This is why its important to match the wire size. For example if you have a 12AWG wire you'll want to use a 12 AWG wire for the extension.

I see the USB signal logo on the front, but I don't see the connector exposed in any of the pictures. Can you provide a photo of the exposed USB connector and how the head unit looks with a thumb drive plugged into it please? Also, this radio seems to be the only radio in your fleet with Hi-power outputs. Why did crutchfield do away with the drop down filter which allows customers to easily find radios that meets their power requirement? Im disappointed that crutchfield thinks too much data in the drop down filters is a bad thing.

The Sony MEX-XB100BT features a front-panel USB (type-A) port hidden behind a slide-out cover located on the right hand side of the face plate, next to the seek up/down buttons. You can see it on our site by clicking the picture of the front panel to zoom-in. You are also correct in that this is the only high-wattage amplifier offered from a head unit alone--every other model produces somewhere around 15-20 watts RMS per channel. I will pass along your feedback regarding the filter options offered on our website; but until other manufacturer's start producing high powered head units, the only result that will come up is this Sony MEX-XB100BT. If you would like to discuss further, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. I hope that helps!

How can you wire 6 speakers to this radio?
    christopher  Oct 17, 2016
    2 answers
    A
There are a couple of ways to add speakers. Depending on what you want to accomplish you can use a cross-over to add multiple speakers per output. For example you could split the bass and midrange/treble with two speakers. Combos of this kind can be found ready made as component speakers and will include the cross-over. If you prefer you can always make them yourself. The second approach is to hook up two speakers to each output but you MUST preserve the correct output impedance for the radio or bad things can happen from distorting the sound to burning something out. In order to match the correct impedance you need to understand how this works. Connecting speakers in series will result in their impedance adding up so if you have two speakers rated at 4 ohms each their connection in series will result to 8 ohms total impedance. If you connect them in parallel the impedance will be (I1 x I2)/(I1+I2). So if you are using 4 ohm speakers you will have 4 x 4/4+4 = 16/8 = 2 ohm. If all this appears too complicated you should buy the ready made component speakers or get someone with some basic electronic understanding to help you. Hope this helps.

Not on separate channels. It has 4 speaker terminals. You could wire more in series/ parallel.

It says this stereo "can't be used with an active outboard factory amplifier." Can I add a non factory amp later if I want to upgrade power or add say a subwoofer with an integrated amplifier? The provided amplifier compliments the factory speakers very well. The installation was very similar to installing an aftermarket amp. I had to run power and a ground including an inline fuse through the firewall to the battery. I don't know of a reason that you couldn't use an aftermarket amp with this stereo, of course by first removing the provided Sony amp. This is a very nice stereo with a robust sound for the price. How does the illumination dimmer function on this unit? Does it tie in with the factory dimmer and adjust with instrument panel or does it have stand alone settings. Most importantly does it dim so dark as to not have a super bright dash worm hole thing? When your on a long nights drive, away from the city lights.

This unit has 3 settings for the dimmer. On, off, and auto. The auto just uses the signal from the cars harness to switch from on to off with the headlights/running lights. The dimmed setting is dim enough it shouldn't bother you on long drives. Dims down quite a bit.

You can adjust the brightness manually , or illumination circuit can be hooked up correctly and the stereo will dim automatically when the headlights are turned on, even with illumination circuit hooked up you can turn auto dimming off in the stereo to keep it at full brightness in the daytime if your headlights are on for any reason. Mine is hooked up to the illumination circuit correctly, auto dim is turned on, and honestly I love the look and brightness of the stereo, have never had a problem seeing anything, day or night. I have all the buttons red and the display light blue, it looks awesome.

How can you wire High level inputs to a sub, and still use the HPF to your speakers? Will the RCA pre's not be HPF? IE my sub is small, and is 50-250hz. The LPF of the radios' sub output ends at 120hz. I would like to get the full range to the sub, but still use the HPF to the other speakers.

You can only use the filters if you hook to an external amp for the sub, or you can set the stereo to run rear speakers as subs allowing use of the filters for the rear speakers only, i am not sure if you can use the rca outputs and use the rear speaker sub option at the same time. Front speakers will always be full range either way. I have a truck, so taking up space with a sub wasn't something i wanted to do, so i put good speakers in the front and back that could handle all the volume and thump i wanted to throw at them, i am very happy with the system, it flat out rocks, almost makes my ears bleed!

I used the factory settings for LPF/HPF/RBE and didn't get into it further as I have a factory rear sub. Nevertheless, RBE should be adjusting your rear speakers more for bass if you wired front and rear correctly. When I was playing around with the RBE function, I could definitely hear a difference trying out the different settings - 1,2,3. I'll be no no extra help, as I'm novice at best.

The head unit feature a front-panel USB (type-A) port hidden behind a slide-out cover. The receiver's USB port can be used for plugging in a (MSC) Mass Storage Class USB device; such as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only) or USB thumbdrives. The head unit can play MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC, and WAV music files stored on compatible USB device. USB portable devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (5V/1.5A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

The info on this unit talks about running a sub off the rear channels by only wiring one channel to the sub and changing the setting in the headunit. I'm wondering if this bridges the back two channels and what the output would be? The unit has been bench tested at 43w/ch x 4 but curious what the output would be to the sub when configured. 80+ watts would drive some lightweight 10's and provide a simple system.

Limited knowledge of using the unit for that purpose here. I would think 2 10s would be a bit much. I have this in my ranger and it drives 4 6x9s. For the money and speaker set up it is no slouch. If you haven't ever had adequately powered speakers before they provide much more bass when powered properly and stay more clear at higher volumes. Personal opinion here but I would try 4 speakers first, see how you like it, and maybe add an amp sub combo down the road. You are really not back tracking either since the head unit needs its own power source and is in the dash vs most amps being in the rear/trunk of the vehicle. Just my two cents. Hope this helps. PS I love this head unit A+ and have installed many units and been disappointed with the coalst to get reasonable sound. Worth ever cent.

Then I thought maybe I can use the amp in the back for a sub. So I unhooked the amp, And the Sony played the Bose speakers fine. not near the advantage of with the amp but it did play them fine .....this also may answer a second question you have the answer would be yes you can run this amplified head unit into an amplifier
    leon  Jun 15, 2015

It will, but it all depends on what you want out of your sound system. I'm using a set of components with a 5-80 watt rms range and I think it sounds great in my 2 seater. I chose this headunit because it has the extra power over others. I don't plan on installing an external amp or subwoofer, so this fit my wants perfectly. If you're going to install an external amplifier I personally don't see a reason to spend the extra bucks on this headunit. Also, The shop that installed it also had to run a wire to the battery because the stock wiring could not carry the power needed for this headunit... Or something like that. Hope this helps!

You can add a 4 channel amplifier to this has unit. I don't believe you will need any more power to your speakers than the head unit offers, 4x100. I can roll all of my windows down and everything is still clear on higher volumes.

I'm guessing you meant 4-channel "amp" (not "sub"), so yes you can use the rca pre-outs that are on the head unit. You don't have to use the speaker output leads from the internal amp if you want to use external amps for your system.

It has a 6-channel pre-amp output (2 pairs R/L and one pair for subs), which might be what you're thinking of. The deck itself is wired for 4 speakers with its built-in amp. To use more than four speakers, you will need to use external amplifiers alone or in addition to the built in amp.

    daniel  May 10, 2015

I don't believe so. The manual's diagram shows four speakers and two tweeters. I think that if you tried, you'd need a custom harness. This stereo also comes with a mini amplifier that connects directly to the battery so I assume that redirecting that (power) to more than six speakers, would be a challenge.

Do you know what the "normal" power draw of this unit is? 12v amps?
