Our take on the Sony XBA-2iP

by David Brown

Deep bass in a small headphone

Looking for powerful bass response in a comfortable in-ear headphone? Sony's XBA-2iP headphones not only combine detailed, balanced sound with an in-line remote, but give your music an extra bass boost that your old headphones might be missing.

Dual balanced armatures for crisp highs and powerful lows

How does Sony deliver clear sound with deep bass in such a small headphone? By utilizing balanced armature technology. Unlike dynamic drivers in typical headphones, the XBA-2iP's drivers employ a pivoting magnetic arm to generate crystal clear sound. Each earbud of the XBA-2iP includes two micro drivers: one full-range driver and one dedicated woofer, precision-tuned to make vocals sparkle, guitars shine and bass rumble.

Size is everything

When you're on the go, a compact, in-ear headphone won't slow you down. That's another advantage of balanced armature technology. Each driver is fine-tuned by Sony engineers to ensure that small size equals robust sound, while fitting comfortably in your ear. An assortment of interchangeable ear tips ensures a snug fit that keeps noise out and your music in.

Remotely control your iPod® or iPhone®

Control your iPod or iPhone without even touching it. The XBA-2iP's cord features a built-in remote, giving you easy volume and track control. The remote's built-in microphone lets you seamlessly make and answer calls while your iPhone remains safely nestled in your pocket or bag. The remote also supports Apple VoiceOver, allowing compatible iPods to tell you title and artist info for the current track.

Dual Balanced Armature Drivers: The Sony XBA Series in-ear headphones (XBA-2iP) are outfitted with Sony's newly developed Balanced Armature driver units engineered for crisp, balanced sound of incredible depth and precision. Infused with premium audio technology, even the most subtle musical nuances are delivered with tremendous clarity and detail. Compared to conventional dynamic drivers, two Balanced Armature drivers (full-range and woofer) deliver crystal-clear vocals and profound bass. Plus, these micro-sized drivers are meticulously pre-tuned by Sony engineers to reproduce a balanced high to low frequency response and emphasize key sound characteristics to enhance your music.

Double Layer Housing: A specially made inner housing constructed of liquid crystal polymer holds the driver units rigidly in place for super smooth frequency response. Enclosed in an ABS outer housing that suppresses unwanted vibrations, this innovative double layer design delivers crystal-clear mid to high range sound and overall crisp, rich audio.

Noise Isolation Design: Because Balanced Armature drivers sport an ultra compact design for a smaller overall form factor, they slip easily inside the ear for a snug, more natural-feeling fit. The result is reduced ambient noise and limited sound leakage.

Multiple Ear Tips: The Sony XBA Series in-ear headphones come with 4 sizes of silicone ear tips (ss/s/m/l) and 3 size of silicone/foam ear tips (s/m/l) to ensure a tailored fit that further maximizes overall sound quality and comfort.

In-Line Remote + Mic: The in-line remote gives you volume and track controls (Play, Stop, Next/Previous) for your iPod, iPhone, or iPad; and the built-in microphone makes it easy to take calls from your iPhone. A simple press of a button activates VoiceOver mode, allowing your Apple device to state the name of the currently playing song or playlist. Apple device compatibility as of 8/16/2012:

Better than the Beats Tour

Written By Derick H., Pittsburgh, PA on Wednesday, March 13, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I bought these headphones to replace a pair of Beats tour that I accidentally damaged. These are much better than the Beats on several fronts. 1: comfort. Anytime I used the Beats it felt like I had inserted a q-tip too far into my ear canal. No issues with ear fatigue or discomfort with these Sony headphones and they create a great seal inside my ear that helps block outside noise (and yes I tried multiple ear pieces to obtain a better fit, no luck). 2: function. These ear-buds actually stay in my ears where as the Beats required constant re-adjustment, a trait that I found extremely annoying. 3: sound quality. I always found the sound of the Beats to be just average, especially for their price. These Sony headphones have allowed me the opportunity to hear subtle nuances in music that I've listened to 100's of times before. The bass isn't mind-blowing but it's clear and doesn't sound over-driven. Cons. The cord. The Beats Tour has a flat, tangle-free cord that I really liked. It felt sturdy and the right angle 1/8" jack has a lower profile to it. The Sony XBA's have not given me any issues in terms of reliability or tangles but I liked the heavier cord of the Beats and lower profile jack ( I try to keep my headphones away from situations that might stress their cables and cause premature failure hence why such matters to me ) Cool factor: Beats by Dre headphones are easily recognizable. If you need attention for what you buy, you won't want these.
Fit, function, sound quality
Will the cord handle normal wear and tear without shorting out? Lacks the same "cool factor" as Beats
