Enjoy the clean, digital sound of HD Radio as well as standard AM and FM broadcasts with the Sony XDR-S3HD. This handsome tabletop radio receives the new, free digital programming many stations now transmit along with their regular AM and FM signals. HD Radio signals offer a significant improvement in sound quality — FM can approach CD-quality sound, while AM nears current FM sound fidelity. And the 'S3HD lets you access the additional digital channels some stations broadcast — channels you can only receive with an HD Radio tuner.

The XDR-S3HD comes with 40 presets so you can quickly jump to your favorite AM and FM stations. The built-in stereo speaker system features two full-range drivers in a ported enclosure for warm rich sound.

Poorest reception - Not Good at all

Written by: Kit from Milford, CT on October 12, 2008

I have purchased several HD radios, five to be exact, and this Sony is the
worst. It was the only one bad enough to return. Both the AM and FM
sensitivity are horrible, the equivalent of a cheap radio. Who cares if the
sound is nice and the radio looks nice if it only picks up a few strong
stations? I am surprised by the other reviewers. I think the one who rate
this radio high must be right inside a metro area and / or must not have
anything better to which to compare. With HD you must have a super-
sensitive tuner (and a good antenna).
About a year ago I bought the Sangean from here, and to date that radio
has the best performance.
I would "guess" that the newer Sony model, the one with the IPod thing
can't be any better.

Not bad, butnot great either

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The reception is good when using the T antenna. The sound is not quite as good as the old Bose clock radios, specifically the low end. There is also no snooze feature so its use is better for a kitchen as opposed to a bedroom.
However for the price it is a good deal. If you are not in a hurry for an HD radio, I'd wait to see what other models come out later on.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound! My first experience with HD radio. Bought it on the basis of
the thorough specs you offered in your comparison feature, and viewing
the users' manual on line. The unit was very easy to set up to receive the
HD stations in our area. I consider the XDR-S3HD a very good buy for the
money. I have not explored all the other features yet, such as
alarm/snooze, etc; have been enjoying the HD stations too much!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good sound - especially with the HD surround-sound. Remote works well. I am hoping we will have more HD channels in the future - right now there are only 2 on AM and 2 on FM in my area. Very happy with the sound and appearance of the unit.
