Bored with your vehicle's sound system? Sony's XM-N502 2-channel amplifier will add clarity and power to your system, delivering 65 watts RMS to each of your speakers, so you'll have more fun listening to music on the road. To add some low-frequency fun, you can bridge the MX-N502 amp into 1-channel mode and drive a subwoofer with 175 watts.

A low-pass filter helps your sub sound its best. Sony placed all of the MX-N502's connections and controls on the front of the amp, for a cleaner installation with easier access to adjustments. To protect the amp from overheating and shutting down, an Auto Thermal Control lowers the power output slightly during those moments of extreme, hard driving play. Sony shows its commitment to high quality by gold-plating this amp's connectors for reliable conductivity.

Features

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement methods for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured into a 4Ω load, with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N), and over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz (for full range amplifiers). Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4Ω. CEA-2006 standards allow consumers to compare amplifiers on an equal basis. Using CEA-2006 criteria, the Sony XM-N502 is rated at 65 watts RMS x 2 channels, with a 93 dBA signal to noise ratio.

Pulse Power Supply: The amplifier utilizes a Pulse Power Supply system to regulate the fluctuating voltage received from the car's electrical system.

LPF: A two position switch turns the low pass filter (LPF) on/off, the crossover point is fixed at 80 Hz and the slope is 18 dB/octave.

Power Connections: The power, ground, and remote turn-on screw terminals are 0.35" wide. A Phillips-head or flat blade screw driver (not included) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals. A protective cover is included for the power/ground/remote terminal block.

Speaker Connections: The speaker screw terminals are 0.35" wide. A Phillips-head or flat blade screw driver (not included) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

RCA Input: The amplifier features one pair of stereo RCA line level inputs (left/right).

Fuse: The amp is protected by a single 25-amp ATO blade fuse.

Q
Does this amp require a remote connection or will it power up with the speaker level line in detection?

A
The Sony XM-N502 does require a remote turn-on lead for installation. If you would like to discuss further, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. I hope that helps!

Q
Can this amp run Mixed-mono? Meaning power twospeakers.in stereo as.well as "bridged " (I believe is the term) for using both channels to power a sub at the same time?
dana  Nov 14, 2016

A
From my understanding, it is designed to run the left and right channel in stereo (2-channel) or bridged mono (1-channel), not both modes at the same time. If you had a dual voice coil subwoofer, you could run the left and right channel to the sub instead of running in bridges mode. I think this is what you are implying. Either way, make sure you match the ohms of how you wire to your speaker impedance.

I checked the manual and it does allow it. You need to install a cap inline with the main speakers and a coil inline with the sub. Depending on the crossover freq you want will depend on the values of the cap and coil. It shows the connections in the manual.
j gregory  Nov 15, 2016
A
No. This amp isn't made to do that.
joseph  Nov 15, 2016

Since this is a 2 channel amp, you can run 2 speakers in stereo mode OR bridge the 2 channels to run 1 mono channel. You can't do both. You would need a 4 channel amp to do that.

Q
Help me understand this. It says it's a 500W amp, but it only has 65 watts per channel and only a 2 channel amp. So that only adds up to 130 watts, so where does the 500W come from?

Tom, I hope this answer your question. MAX. CHANNEL CONFIGURATION AT 4 OHM (W) / THD (%) 65 W x 2 / 1.0% MAX. CHANNEL CONFIGURATION AT 2 OHM (W) / THD (%) 85 W x 2 / 1.0% Maximum Output Power (1 kHz) MAX. CHANNEL POWER CONFIGURATION AT 4 OHM 2 x 150 W MAX. CHANNEL CONFIGURATION AT 4 OHM BTL 1 x 500 W MAX. CHANNEL POWER CONFIGURATION AT 2 OHM 2 x 210 W

A lot of company's list their amps with power levels that really are not realistic but they still do it. If you drill down in the specs it does list 1x500watts at 4ohms BTL all done at 1khz. So yes it will give 500 watts but it's at one frequency level and probably more distortion than you could handle. Look at RMS power at 1% THD. That's the true power that is meaningful. It took me awhile to find the "500" listed as well. With that said the amp works great for my 2 10" subs in my 66 mustang. One thing that sold it for me was all connections are on one side of the amp so all cables come from one location.

The 500W power that they mention is peak power into a 1 ohm load in bridged configuration. However, it's more than just peak, but is actually peak-to-peak, which takes into consideration the entire voltage/current waveform of a sinewave from the highest positive-going voltage to the lowest negative-going voltage. Their specs mention a bridged RMS power of 175W into a 1 ohm load. To get the peak power, simply multiply this figure by 1.414 (the square root of 2). So 175 X 1.414 = 247.45Wpk. To get peak-to-peak, multiply by 2, which gives 247.45 X 2 = 494.9Wpk-pk. Round up the answer, and you've got an attractive advertisement. Frankly, RMS power gives a better indication of what to expect in performance.

Probably at max distortion, not totally horrid on sub duty, but not realistic of course.... Perhaps right before the fuse is blown. Into 2 ohm, dipping lower? Anyway 165 bridged at 4 ohms is probably about the max clean power
kenneth  Sep 12, 2016
A
The 65 watts per channel is the rms rated power @ 4 ohms which means that the amp can put out 65 continuous watts per channel at a Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of 1% or less. This amp can accept a 2 ohm load and put out higher wattage. It can also be bridged (combining both channels to make a single channel). In this configuration, the amp puts out 175 watts rms @ 2ohms. The 500 watt figure is the peak power output in bridged mode. Peak power output on any amp will sound very distorted when the wattage exceeds rms rated output as THD increases exponentially above it. The difference is max or peak power vs. RMS. When shopping for head units or amps, I only pay attention to RMS specs. RMS specs are the best ones to use when comparing different products and matching watts to your speakers. When considering speakers, you must pay attention to ohm specs also.

Can I use this with 4 gauge wire kit instead of 10 gauge wire kit that's recommended? Will use this amp to power my pioneer ts a1605c speakers

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: There is no need to use wire that big with this amp, but you can use it as long as you put a terminal on the end of the wire. I don't expect the amp's inputs to take wire that big. By the way, that's a good match on this amp with those speakers! If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
