Our take on the Sony XR-CA350X

Let Sony's XR-CA350X receiver pull tremendous detail out of your cassettes with its 4-way high power! Switch on one of the seven EQ3 preset tone curves to modify the overall sound of your vehicle's acoustics. If it needs more adjustment, use the 3-band equalizer to fill out the bottom end, add clarity to the mids, or sharpen the highs.

Sony's SSIR-EX tuner captures any station within reach, whether you're on the road or cruising the town. Get access to a road trip's worth of tunes when you add a Sony CD changer or the optional XM satellite radio tuner.

Note

Features

EQ3: You may select one of the following EQ presets: Xplod, Vocal, Club, Jazz, New Age, Rock, or Custom. For each preset, you can adjust the following frequencies: 60Hz (Low), 1kHz (Mid), and 10kHz (High). The level of each frequency can be adjusted from +10dB to -10dB in 1dB increments. The preset EQ3 settings are:

  • Xplod: Low = +10, Mid = +4, High = +4
  • Vocal: Low = +5, Mid = +7, High = +3
  • Club: Low = +8, Mid = 0 High = +2
  • Jazz: Low = +3, Mid = -4, High = +3
  • New Age: Low = +4, Mid = 0, High = +6
  • Rock: Low = +7, Mid =  0, High = +3
  • Custom: Low = 0, Mid = 0, High = 0

Source Tone Memory: Each source (AM/FM/Cassette/CD changer) can store its own EQ3 levels.

Tuner: This model is equipped with Sony's proprietary SSIR-EX tuner. You can choose automatic tuning (seek) to choose a radio station, or, if the automatic tuning stops too frequently, you can change the sensitivity of the tuner to the Local Seek mode. This allows you to tune in only relatively strong stations. You can also switch from FM Stereo to FM Mono if the stereo reception is poor.

Automatic Tuner Activation (ATA): When fast-forwarding or rewinding, the radio will turn on automatically. This feature can be turned on or off.

External Device Controls

Changer Controls: This unit has the following CD/MD changer controls: track repeat, disc repeat, disc random, changer random and all disc random (if connecting more than one changer). In addition, the unit features the following CD-changer functions.

  • CD Text/MD Memo Display: When used with a compatible CD changer and a CD Text encoded CD, this unit will display the CD Text information. When using a compatible Sony MD changer, this receiver can display disc and track names that have been prerecorded on MDs.
  • Auto Scroll: If the disc name, artist name, or track name on a CD Text disc or MiniDisc exceeds 8 characters and the Auto Scroll function is on, the information will automatically scroll across the screen.

XM Satellite Radio: To receive XM Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional CNP2000UC XM Mini Tuner (220CNP20UC) and the Sony CNP-SON1 adapter cable (package item number 700XMSON1).

Note

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display and face/button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds. Note: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you must turn the radio completely off (this defeats keyed operation), or you may wire the accessory power wire of this radio to an alternate source of accessory power to retain keyed clock and face/button illumination operation.

Nice, simple, affordable head unit

Written By gregb, Baton Rouge, LA on Wednesday, February 13, 2008

I recently purchased this unit on clearance to replace my 12 year old sony head unit after the tuner went out. I don't listen to tapes all that much, but it works perfectly with my old 10 disc changer and the sound is great even on my car's factory speakers. It looks great and is easy to use. The display is much easier to read than my old unit, but you may need to study the buttons with a magnifying glass to memorize what they are for. They can be a little difficult to read, especially while driving. The main drawback for me is that it doesn't support the custom file funtion on my cd changer, but it does actually display the titles I had programmed into it using my old head unit. This is an excellent deal if you are trying to avoid spending a small fortune on a new CD controller.

Low Cost Sony Tape player

Written By Bryan, Austin, Texas on Saturday, September 23, 2006

This unit is pleasing to the eye both on or off. There is plenty of power, and well thought out instructions from Sony make install a breeze, as well as operation. My unit sometimes powers off when you adjust the volume. The buttons are really small. The cassette funtions buttons are manual, and if feels hard to fingers to (eject) rew or ff. I like the BTM function, where you hit one button, and all (strongest FM) stations auto populate to the direct station numbers buttons, really neat for fast setup. The AM and FM stations come in really well. Rewind and Fastforward is not the correct direction from one side to the reverse side. If the tape is playing side two, you have to think o.k. FF to rewind the tape.

Sony XR-CA350X

Written By Kevin, LA, CA on Friday, May 13, 2005

It makes a great bottom-end head unit, but It's hard on tapes. If you listen to tapes a lot you'll be much happier with the XR-F5100X
