About the Sony XS-GS80L

John Pollard

Built for big bass

Sony created their GS Series subwoofers with performance in mind. Their XS-GS80L 8" subwoofer features a mica-reinforced cellular glass-fiber cone that's extremely light and rigid — it's able to move faster and more accurately, giving every kick drum hit or bass guitar lick in your music much more impact.

Ready to rock (for a long, long time)

A large ferrite magnet and a big rubber surround help this Sony handle up to 280 watts RMS. This small sub fits into places where space is at a premium, and it's equally at home in a ported or sealed enclosure. And best of all, Sony backs up these workhorse subs with a cool 3-year warranty.

Product Research

Features

Cone Design: The XS-GS80L uses an MRC cone (Mica Reinforced Cellular glass fiber composite) to reduce weight and increase rigidity, delivering deep bass response.

Surround: To improve cone motion control, the surround is made of ThermoPlastic Olefin (TPO), a combination of rubber, polypropylene, polyethylene, and a reinforcing filler.

Spring Posts: The spring post wire terminals will accept pin connectors, single banana plugs, and bare wire up to 10 gauge. The binding posts are spaced too far apart to accept dual banana plugs.

Enclosure Compatibility: This woofer can provide extended bass in sealed and ported enclosures:

  • Sealed Enclosure Volume: 0.32 cubic feet
  • Ported Enclosure Volume: 0.41 cubic feet using one 2-3/8" diameter x 6-3/4" long port

Specification Note: Sony's rated power spec for the XS-GS80L is 220 watts (derived using IEC 60268-5 standards). They also list the CEA 2031 compliant RMS power as 280 watts. We've adopted the 220 watt rating simply because it's the more conservative figure.

For my application I already had a pre-existing sub woofer box mounted in the back left side of my Tahoe. This 8" sub fit right in the box where the old one came out. I powered it with a Sound Ordnance 200watt Amp, and it sounds great.

Can either buy a premade box or build one. Best to build a sealed box around. 34cf in volume. I built a custom version to fit original sub location.
