What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Sony XS-L122P5

I have two of these subwoofers in my 2001 ranger hooked up to a 920 watt kenwood amp. I think for the price these speakers sound really good. I get loud clear bass. I would recomend these subwoofers to any body that has a budget but wants good sound.

I just got a pair of these for Christmas, and at first i didnt think they would be that loud, espiecally in a sealed box, but once i got it tuned just right these babies will blow you away!!!! This is the first time since i've had subs that i was worried about my rear window blowing out. Great subs for the price!!

Well i bought 2 of these to match my car since everything else on the car is red and black. I must admit the subs look great and match my car perfectly, the sound quality is descent but the power of the subs suck. 1300 watts each?....theres no possible way. I give them about 500 watts each MAX. I was running a kx850.2 for a while and it was ok, but one of them blew the first day i really pushed them to the edge, and shortly after the other one blew. So i got a jbl 15" gti series sub and it sounds better and has way more power than you could get out of a couple of these subs strapped together. If you just want a sub with a little bump sure this is a great sub for you, but for 110 bucks each you would expect a little bit more than that.

[Editor's Note: The XS-L122P5 is rated at 1300 watts peak power, but only 380 watts RMS continuous power.]

These subs a great for any car with almost any box. I have 2 in my car and they provide great thump. I always wanted to beat for the block, but now I can thanx to these sony's. It is the best sound u can get for this price.

Great sub

I bought one of these to compliment my system in my 1992
Honda Civic DX. It was more than I expected. I had a Pioneer 12" before, but this is tighter and clearer than that sub. I don't want to wake the neighborhood in my car, but one of these subs will.

I have the Sony 2200 Amp powering this one 12...and it is just too loud. I have it at about 20% of its maximum.

i bought 2 of theese and hooked them up to a cheap amplifier and the sound great.

wicked subs

Written By Aj, Houston TX, BLZ on Wednesday, May 25, 2005

I purchased two of these subs and the bass is clean and deep. these subs really pump hard. I was advised that they are not for bandpass boxes. i hav mine in a bandpass box and the bass is perfect. I can be heard from blocks away. i hav them hooked up to a BOSS audio 1200 watt amp and they pump hard. I would definitely advise people to get these subs, the amount of low frequency response is wicked. So if you want performance for a reasonable price go ahead and get these subs.

great subs

i have a 1996 chevy beretta. i have dynamatted the whole car. anyways i have 1 12" and 1 10" in my car. it's a weird combo, but hey it works. i have a 1500 watt lanzar vibe amp hooked up to them and they pound. on some songs when i turn it up you cant even sit inside the car. but they dont need a lot of watts to be very loud because my friend has a ford focus, he has 2 12"S in there and they are only hooked up to a duel 460 watt amp. so they only have 85 watts into each sub and they still pound!!!!!. and they say they arn't supposed to be used in a bandpass box but taks my word for it, give it a try. you will be absolutely amazed. it sounds like it adds 2 more subs in your car but your only running 2. so in short GREAT SUBS!!!!!!!!!!

Probably that worst subwoofer ever made!

Written By Devin, Chattahoochee, FL on Sunday, May 08, 2005

I bought 2 of these and installed them in a sealed enclosure and hooked each up to a Scosche 550 amplifier. After maybe 5 hours of riding around listening to my new system, I was quite impressed! Nice sound, good bass......then about an hour after that I went to check out the rear and I saw that one subwoofer had a small crack in the cone! I took it like any person would, and just built another box for the one left and took an amp out. Then after a week of listening to my system, never pushing it (As I do not recommend for any subwoofer or amplifier, audio system setup) I was surprised to find that the cone was coming apart at the surrounding.
After this I went and bought 2 other 12's and there was such a difference, almost like heaven opened up! I would not recommend ANYONE buy these subwoofers, personally I wouldn't buy any Sony object for car audio except a head unit, I have been running my Sony AM/FM/CD head unit for close to 3-4 years with absolutely NO problems!

Great Subs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought two of these subs and hooked them up to a Sony Xplod 1600GXD mono amp and MAN do they sound great. They hit the lows and the mids hard. I have them in a bandpass in my 86 Cutlass and they sound awesome. GOOD JOB Sony!!!

Not worth it

Written By Ultimate, Somewhere on Wednesday, April 20, 2005

Sony is good with home electronics but they blow with car audio. They should just stick with home electronics. I had 2 of these. They both were powered by a Alpine MRD-M501. One connected to each sub. And these amps blew these subs. So then I had to buy some Alpine SWR-1221D subs. These subs hit alot harder then the Sony's did. Just one of these Alpine subs, out powered both of these Sony subs I had.

not bad

Written By Elliott44, tc mi on Tuesday, April 19, 2005

the subs are good for small systems or to enter into SPL comps if you want to buy a few with a couple nice amps but the sound quality isnt great nor is the responce, if your looking to expand your system try Alpine, maybe even rockford but for some modest thump these will do fine

These subs are great, the bass is really deep and if you wanna pound your system really good get two 1200watts amp = 1000RMS from sony xplod...they have small magnets on the subs but for that size the bass really bumps! great quailty, great price!

Sony Explode XS-L122P5

Written By Mr. P, Las Vegas, NV on Tuesday, March 22, 2005

I've got 2 of them in a ported enclosure, hooked up to a Sony Xplod 2200 amp in the trunk of my 96 Buick Regal GS and all I can say is DAMN!!!! They hit VERY hard and the bass is real tight, not sloppy. The first CD I played was Aerosmith's "Honkin on Bobo" and I was very impressed. It made the bottom end sound real nice but was a bit overpowering at lower volume levels until I adjusted the settings on my amp. Once that was done, I had crisp, clear bass that I could feel in my bones. For the price, Sony has hit the top and knocked off the competitors.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These subs are some of the best I've ever heard.. I know the old Sony Xplode subs used to suck, but Sony really got their act together. I have mine powered by a MTX Thunder amp with 500 watts RMS, and they hit hard.. they are clear and crisp at loud volumes, and even at low volumes they thump hard enough to give you a headache and let the neighbors down the street hear you.. highly recommended.

simply deep!

Written By h***razer!, n/a on Friday, February 04, 2005

i've just purchased this baby, and yet i've got nothing but good things to say about it .the bass is extremely deep, and it pounds even at the highest volume levels, with beautiful's hooked up with a top-notch sony amp xs-d1000p5, give it 500w rms.
it really attracts alot of attention, and it's too loud for ma ears. sony had done it before and again this's a big challenge for the competitors around. it's a 'worth try' and a 'must have'for the true car audio enthusiasts out there. hope this helps.

Product Research

P5 Cone: This woofer has a five-sided polypropylene cone. This design stiffens the cone, resulting in lower distortion and higher power handling. The five-sided cone also cuts down on standing waves on its surface because none of the five sides is parallel to another.

P5 Center Cap: The five-sided dust cap also adds strength to the cone assembly.

Foamed Rubber Surround: The foamed rubber surround provides enhanced cone control and flexibility, as well as durability. "Hash Marks" in the surround provide added stability.

Four-layer Voice Coil: The four-layer, edge-wound voice coil provides plenty of copper to pass the current necessary for high power reliability. The voice coil former is aluminum for superior heat dissipation.

Inner Cap: The inner cap at the top of the voice coil former stabilizes the coil's shape and strengthens the connection between the cone and voice coil.

Spider: Dual three-layer woven spiders provide enhanced cone control. The lead wires are woven into the top spider to prevent shorting to the frame.

Binding Posts: The gold-plated binding posts will accept bare wire up to 8 Gauge, pin connectors, spade lugs and banana plugs. The binding posts are spaced too far apart to accept dual banana plugs.

Enclosure Compatibility: This woofer can provide extended bass in sealed and ported enclosures (please see the "Enclosure" section for more information on the recommended enclosures).

Sealed Box Volume: Sony recommends mounting this woofer in a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 1.15 cu/ft.

Ported Box Volume: Sony recommends mounting this woofer in a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 0.82 cu/ft with one 3" Diameter x 12" Long port.
