Our take on the Sony XS-L124P5B

Sony's made a sub that sounds as interesting as it looks. The five-sided design of the XS-L124P5B 12" sub keeps the polypropylene cone stiff and helps to reduce standing waves found in round subs that can negatively affect bass output and cause distortion. A thick rubber surround keeps the cone properly centered to create the kind of bass that'll draw a crowd.

The XS-L124P5B also draws attention for its exceptional power-handling ability — it'll devour up to 380 watts RMS, without taking a serious bite out of your savings. Place this bruiser in a sealed or ported box for dynamic lows, or pick up a pair for twice the thunder in your vehicle.

Features

P5 One Piece, Cap-less Cone: This woofer has a five-sided polypropylene one-piece, cap-less cone. This design stiffens the cone and increases rigidity, resulting in lower distortion and higher power handling. The five-sided cone also cuts down on standing waves on its surface because none of the five sides is parallel to another.

Stroke Stabilizer Rubber Surround: The rubber surround provides enhanced cone control and flexibility, as well as durability. "Hash Marks" in the surround provide added stability.

Voice Coil: The Sony xs-L124P5B features a single 4-ohm voice coil.

Power Handling: The Sony subwoofer can handle up to 380 Watts RMS and 1,300 Watt Peak with a sensitivity rating of 89 dB.

Frequency Response: The woofer can produce frequencies between 18 and 2,000 Hz.

Binding Posts: The gold-plated binding posts will accept bare wire up to 12 Gauge, pin connectors, spade lugs and banana plugs. The binding posts are spaced too far apart to accept dual banana plugs.

Enclosure Compatibility: This woofer can provide extended bass in sealed and ported enclosures (please see the "Enclosure" section for more information on the recommended enclosures).

Enclosure

Sealed Box Volume: Sony recommends mounting this woofer in a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 0.96 cu/ft.

Ported Box Volume: Sony recommends mounting this woofer in a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 1.20 cu/ft with one 3" Diameter x 10.875" Long port.

Amazing!!

Written By Ben, Lexington,SC on Thursday, December 10, 2009

I just installed these bad boys last night and they are amazing!! I was a little skeptical to buy these considering they were sonys but they had some great reviews and I decided to go for it. I have two of them. I had thunder mtx 5500s before these and they were good but these are a good bit louder. The lows from these subs are amazing and really pound compared to the MTXs which only vibrated on the lows and made noise with no thump. I did love the MTXs but I got them used and they blew. I already had bought a sony xplod amp, headunit, and 6 1/2s so I decided to go ahead and get some xplod subs. I also run my music off of my SONY PSP so I thought it would be pretty awesome to have all sony products. I love these subs and hope they don't end up disappointing me in the future, being a sony I doubt it.

Written By donny, poconos, pa on Saturday, May 23, 2009

i have 2 of these in a sealed box hooked up to a 1200 watt xplod amp in my 97 grand cherokee, and all i have to say is wow! the bass hits so hard my rear view mirror drops down to the point where i cant see out of it and the windshield wipers skip across the window. i have had these in my jeep for almost a year now, and i constantly have the music cranked up and they show no signs of stopping anytime soon. if u want amazing, competition quality bass that wont break the bank, GET THESE SUBS!!! i cant praise these speakers enough.

Written By , sideny, OH on Wednesday, December 10, 2008

i got these about 9 months ago, and they are amazing. they kick like a mofo, sound amazing with techno, and their very weather resistant like other people have said. i got two of these hooked up to a 1500w amp in a double vented box, i got that and a nice wire kick. i would recommend getting it all from crutchfield. everything about this site is amazing, from costumer service, to the master sheet. im goina get some dynamat for my trunk, cuz i can make chocolate milk it shake so much.

Sony XS-L124P5B

Written By BG, Dallas, TX on Monday, August 11, 2008

I got two of these and yeah they were Sweet!!! I have had them for a little over a year now. I have two of the sony 800w amps running 2 of these 12in subs. Now the subs are terrible, i cant turn up the bass at all with out the subs popping. Yeah it was worth the money, but now i gotta go get new subs. I dont want to go get new subs. You pay for what you get, dont buy these, pay for something that will last.

Alive and still kicking

Written By Danngree, Plano Tx on Tuesday, July 22, 2008

I bought two of these subs a closed box, a 800 watt amp, and a Pioneer deck with direct ipod control over a year ago. anybody who says that these subs blow out fast, or have reliability problems are completely wrong. Not only do I blast these EVERY day, the sun-roof of my car was left open and they got rained on. And guess what? They still work lol. They sound better than any of my friends, and at this price you cant beat them. I totally recommend them to anybody who can fit them in their car. I am also ordering new JL door speakers and tweeters right now.

Wow

Written By t, Troy, New York on Tuesday, May 27, 2008

First off, this subwoofer is absolutely amazing. Definitely worth 110 bucks and I couldn't ask for a better sounding 12" for the money. I'm a newbie with the whole "Audio system for your car" scene, but I have just one of these hooked up to a MTX amp in a sealed box completely made by hand and it hits harder than 90% of my friends who have been doing this stuff for a few years now. I have soon to get a capacitor to really see what it can do. On top of how good it sounded after I got it hooked up installment was cake. I didn't have a single problem or question about hooking this up instructions that came with everything was straight to the point. I am very pleased with what I got out of my purchase. I would and will reccommend it to anybody getting their first system.
