Sony's made a sub that sounds as interesting as it looks. The five-sided design of the XS-L124P5B 12" sub keeps the polypropylene cone stiff and helps to reduce standing waves found in round subs that can negatively affect bass output and cause distortion. A thick rubber surround keeps the cone properly centered to create the kind of bass that'll draw a crowd.

The XS-L124P5B also draws attention for its exceptional power-handling ability — it'll devour up to 380 watts RMS, without taking a serious bite out of your savings. Place this bruiser in a sealed or ported box for dynamic lows, or pick up a pair for twice the thunder in your vehicle.

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

I bought these back in 06. Its now 2015 and these still pound. Ive had anything from 500 wats up to 1100 wats rms pushing these and they still never cease to amaze me. I can literally feal the bass in my body. Not just vibrations but the actual sound waves.. A good 75% or more of the people talking trash on these are running a trash amp that cant even run their real ratings. I now have a apcl15001d pusing these wired down to 2 ohms. At 13.9v im still getting over 900 wats rms so 450 each. Still in the same sealed box i bought back then. Over all. I love these speakers and if i could i would recommend them.

Pros: 9 years old and still running strong. Sq is great. These hit lower then most twelves that are comparable. With the right amp/box these can these will surprise you

Cons: Most people power them with crap amps and blame the subs for the sq. They got discontinued

I love my new sub! Great quality and price for it!!

Amazing!!

Written By Ben, Lexington,SC on Thursday, December 10, 2009

I just installed these bad boys last night and they are amazing!! I was a little skeptical to buy these considering they were sonys but they had some great reviews and I decided to go for it. I have two of them. I had thunder mtx 5500s before these and they were good but these are a good bit louder. The lows from these subs are amazing and really pound compared to the MTXs which only vibrated on the lows and made noise with no thump. I did love the MTXs but I got them used and they blew. I already had bought a sony xplod amp, headunit, and 6 1/2s so I decided to go ahead and get some xplod subs. I also run my music off of my SONY PSP so I thought it would be pretty awesome to have all sony products. I love these subs and hope they don't end up disappointing me in the future, being a sony I doubt it.

awesome speaker on a budget

Written By donny, poconos, pa on Saturday, May 23, 2009

i have 2 of these in a sealed box hooked up to a 1200 watt xplod amp in my 97 grand cherokee, and all i have to say is wow! the bass hits so hard my rear view mirror drops down to the point where i cant see out of it and the windshield wipers skip across the window. i have had these in my jeep for almost a year now, and i constantly have the music cranked up and they show no signs of stopping anytime soon. if u want amazing, competition quality bass that wont break the bank, GET THESE SUBS!!! i cant praise these speakers enough.

i got these about 9 months ago, and they are amazing. they kick like a mofo, sound amazing with techno, and their very weather resistant like other people have said. i got two of these hooked up to a 1500w amp in a double vented box, i got that and a nice wire kick. i would recommend getting it all from crutchfield. everything about this site is amazing, from costumer service, to the master sheet. im goina get some dynamat for my trunk, cuz i can make chocolate milk it shake so much.

I got two of these and yeah they were Sweet!!! I have had them for a little over a year now. I have two of the sony 800w amps running 2 of these 12in subs. Now the subs are terrible, i cant turn up the bass at all with out the subs popping. Yeah it was worth the money, but now i gotta go get new subs. I dont want to go get new subs. You pay for what you get, dont buy these, pay for something that will last.

Alive and still kicking

Written By Danngree, Plano Tx on Tuesday, July 22, 2008

I bought two of these subs a closed box, a 800 watt amp, and a Pioneer deck with direct ipod control over a year ago. anybody who says that these subs blow out fast, or have reliability problems are completely wrong. Not only do I blast these EVERY day, the sun-roof of my car was left open and they got rained on. And guess what? They still work lol. They sound better than any of my friends, and at this price you cant beat them. I totally recommend them to anybody who can fit them in their car. I am also ordering new JL door speakers and tweeters right now.

Wow

Written By t, Troy, New York on Tuesday, May 27, 2008

First off, this subwoofer is absolutely amazing. Definitely worth 110 bucks and I couldn't ask for a better sounding 12" for the money. I'm a newbie with the whole "Audio system for your car" scene, but I have just one of these hooked up to a MTX amp in a sealed box completely made by hand and it hits harder than 90% of my friends who have been doing this stuff for a few years now. I have soon to get a capacitor to really see what it can do. On top of how good it sounded after I got it hooked up installment was cake. I didn't have a single problem or question about hooking this up instructions that came with everything was straight to the point. I am very pleased with what I got out of my purchase. I would and will reccommend it to anybody getting their first system.

these subs are awesome, i was a lil skeptical at first just cuz they were sony and i had heard some bad things about them but i decided to give them a try anyway cuz they were cheap and had really great reviews, i have two of them in a ported box hooked up to a 1000w kenwood amp (don't buy the 1000w sony amp) in the trunk of my '00 cavalier and it rattles my car, my rearview even rattles off of the mount! they blow away my buddies truck and his two 12'' kickers...i would recommend these to anyone

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I must admit off the bat that I've never heard any of my friends really push their systems to the limit, so I have nothing with which to compare my experience. But, holy cow! I never knew that just one 12 would slam that hard, and I haven't even cranked it yet (still 'breaking it in'). I love this sub. I'm glad I got exactly what I got. The rubber surround gives me a little more security than the Rockford that I was considering, and with the sealed box I put it in, the bass is tighter than I expected for a larger woofer. Again, this thing slams in the back of my Cherokee!

Thumping 69 Camaro conv.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchaced a pair of these subs about 3 months ago and installed them in my 69 Camaro convertible. They really take the abuse. I have a Kicker ZX1000.1 amp driving them. With the money I saved I can afford to buy higher watt rated woofers if my Sony subs get fried.

I have to say that i have an awesome setup and sound for 1 12" !! I have a 2006 Mercury Montego and with the trunk space i got i was able to get an incredible sound. Ihave a 3.0 cuft Square ported box and this 12". My pioneer 760 watt amp is amazing and with the bass i get i think this a great speaker for the price!! I killed a 800 watt max 12" pioneer sub and also a 12" kicker cvr. The sony sub shines. recommend to any and all who want awesome clean bass at a fair price!!

I got two of these bad boys about 3 weeks ago. Right from the get go I was very impressed. I have them in a ported box in the back of my 2002 jeep grand cherokee hooked up to a Kenwood KAC-9103D amp and they slam like mad. For the first two weeks the bass was pretty good, but a little muddy. Now that these subs have been broken in they sound amazing, and hit soo hard. My rear view mirror broke off from the vibration, and my friends can hear me coming from about 3 blocks away. Especially for the price, these subs are bomb. If you want to feel your hair move and your heart skip without paying outrageous amounts of money, you gotta go with the xplod's.

Great!

Written By Adam, Campbellsville, KY on Monday, July 16, 2007

I have bought all of the newer SONY's products (CDX-GT710) CD Player, (GT6935A) Rear Deck Speakers, (GT1325A) Front Door Speakers (custom install), (XS-L124P5B) Sub, and the (XMD-9001GTR) Amp. All together these sound great. The service and support were awsome and I loved the quick 2-3 Day shipping. The Subs hit realy hard and considering I've only had them two or three weeks, most of the time on a old 150watt 2 channel amp these hit hard with the right setup. Great install on my 1986 Cadillac DeVille.

Dissapointment

Written By VWMAN, San Louis Obispo, CA on Tuesday, May 15, 2007

I bought the unit in thanksgiveing 2006 and used it pretty much every day on my ten mile drive to work, and it always gave a decent performance. I had it paired with the suggested enclosure and amp from this website, but it never sounded better than cheeper models I have had in the past. Moreover this month, May 2007, something came unglued inside of the speaker and now it sounds as if there are a couple of tacks bounceing on top of it. for a $100 + speaker this was a supreme dissapointment. I would not buy it again, and would caution you not to as well. Try something else...

Decent Bass

Written By Kishor, Boca Raton, Florida on Tuesday, March 06, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I JUST GOT THESE IN THE OTHER DAY AND JUST INSTALLED THEM. THEY HIT PRETTY HARD, I MEAN THEY ARE BETTER THAN MOST SONY'S. I JUST NEED TO MESS AROUND WITH MY AMP SO I CAN GET MORE BASS AND I THINK THAT BECAUSE THEY ARE BRAND NEW, I STILL NEED TO BREAK THEM IN. I THINK ANOTHER LIKE 2-3 WEEKS SHOULD BREAK THEM IN AND THEY WILL HIT MUCH HARDER. THEY ARE DEFINATLEY A GOOD BUY FOR THE PRICE. :)

Features

P5 One Piece, Cap-less Cone: This woofer has a five-sided polypropylene one-piece, cap-less cone. This design stiffens the cone and increases rigidity, resulting in lower distortion and higher power handling. The five-sided cone also cuts down on standing waves on its surface because none of the five sides is parallel to another.

Stroke Stabilizer Rubber Surround: The rubber surround provides enhanced cone control and flexibility, as well as durability. "Hash Marks" in the surround provide added stability.

Voice Coil: The Sony xs-L124P5B features a single 4-ohm voice coil.

Power Handling: The Sony subwoofer can handle up to 380 Watts RMS and 1,300 Watt Peak with a sensitivity rating of 89 dB.

Frequency Response: The woofer can produce frequencies between 18 and 2,000 Hz.

Binding Posts: The gold-plated binding posts will accept bare wire up to 12 Gauge, pin connectors, spade lugs and banana plugs. The binding posts are spaced too far apart to accept dual banana plugs.

Enclosure Compatibility: This woofer can provide extended bass in sealed and ported enclosures (please see the "Enclosure" section for more information on the recommended enclosures).

Enclosure

Sealed Box Volume: Sony recommends mounting this woofer in a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 0.96 cu/ft.

Ported Box Volume: Sony recommends mounting this woofer in a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 1.20 cu/ft with one 3" Diameter x 10.875" Long port.
