Ridiculous Large External Power Supply Box

Written by: Homan from Memphis, TN on April 28, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice Boombox. But not for on-the-go or construction site as it claims. It makes no sense to design a portable boombox stereo with a large external power supply box on the cord.

Pros: Nice sound and nice color

Cons: Large external power supply box on the AC cord.

No negatives....yet

I'll give this five stars but the big test for me is yet to come this summer on the Lake Michigan beach. Love the controls, the aux input location, and the nice bassy bottom in the sound. Durability hasn't been challenged yet. And I have not yet used cd's...mostly an iPod guy.

Pros: access to controls.....nice sound quality with wide dynamic range.....good am/fm reception

Cons: AC adapter is clunky

Sony ZS - H10CP

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this boombox. Contrary to other reviewers notes about it being heavy, it is NOT heavy. In fact the actual weight is perfect for stabilizing its broad base. The red and black two tone color is bold as it should be. It is easy to carry because of the stout textured cross bar on top. The octagon sides are stylish. The CD lid opens uniquely by lifting a release tab instead of having to find a small push button. The dials are large and smooth to operate. The sound is clear and crisp even at the lowest numbers. Each volume number is divided into thirds for more sensitive level settings. An over complex system is not the case with this practical straight forward music machine.

Pros: Very stable. Attractive. Easy to operate. Fits nicely into a duffel bag. Practical engineering. Long power cord with good storage compartment. Radio stations are steady and clear. Crafty inclement weather protection. Simple MP3 set - up. Nice crisp clear sound with ample bass at all volumes, even when bass booster is off. No detectable distortion at higher sound pressure levels. The digital read out is pronounced and informative. Affordable.

Cons: Rubber boots covering implement and power source connections may wear after heavy use. Radio antenna is metal and may bend or break if stressed to much.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well I am always concerned buying an open box/ discounted product but it was going to get roughed up at work so I figured "what the heck". Well it came nicely packaged and works OK. I live in the sticks and radio reception is not very good so I will need to try the radio in the city before I rate that. The CD sounds good, The display panel stopped working the second time I used it BUT later it reappeared. I bought it to keep me company on job sites not write me notes so I can deal with that too.

Pros: light weight

Cons: display stopped working second time I used it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was surprised at the size of the unit, expecting a much smaller radio. Definitely construction site material and the sound was awesome. The color of the radio was very appealing and you will definitely not forget where you put it, color and sound. CD compartment well sealed to provide protection for your CDs and the player itself. Bought this as a birthday present for my son and I almost decided to keep it for myself, I will order another one just for me.

Pros: Great sound, easy to operate, and priced way below other similar products out there.

Cons: None

Happy customer

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My husband and I have always had a "boombox" for the garage/patio that we used whenever we were outside. After about 15 years, our boombox finally died. We don't use MP3 players or IPODs (but may soon) so finding a boombox that played CDs and had an AM/FM radio in addition to the MP3 connection was important. I picked this one because it is meant for a harsher environment than inside of a home. I gave it to my husband for his birthday, and he couldn't be happier. The sound is great and there are very few cracks and crevices for dirt/dust to get in. Ordering from the website was easy and shipping was fast.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this boombox from Crutchfield. My main reasons for ordering it were 1) it received good reviews and 2) it was able to play mp3 files. I use this boombox at work. I make eight to twelve hour long CD's in the mp3 format at home and play them, at work, in shuffle mode, for nine hours a day, six days a week. I've used this boombox every work day for the last several years and at always works FLAWLESSLY!

Pros: I was impressed by the quality of construction. The CD door has an "O" ring seal to keep out dust and liquids. For me, that is an important feature. It also displays the rock group name and song name.

Cons: I have no complaints.

Good looking & durable

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Using it in the garage right now. Bought it primarily for camping. Sound quality is what you would expect from a Sony boombox- great. AUX input is a great feature, but iPod/USB input would make it perfect. AC adapter (laptop style) is very awkward for a boombox of this type- the radio is heavy enough that the transformer could have been mounted inside the unit. The shell seems like it will hold up nicely. All buttons are of the sealed rubber type, typical of the past Sony Sports boomboxes (from the 80's). The over-sized volume knob gives excellent control. Unit is quite large, so take note of the dimensions prior to ordering. All in all, it's a versatile boombox that I hope to have for a while.

As always, Crutchfield had super fast delivery & superb customer service. Thanks again Crutchfield.

displeasure,be it reception or quality..this radio is built better, reception is exceptional and i
payed less for it !!! so glad sony came back with base booster, had a radio many years ago
(sony) with hyper bass . only con i see with this is the cord. has a cord with transformer on
it , should have put port inside of cord storage bin so it could be plugged in and not have
transformer dangeling, this could be a problem, moving radio around..

Bought this thing to keep in the camper and use on float trips. After a couple trips it has held up good to the water and a bunch of drunks. Can't speak for the longevity, but I don't forsee any problems. Would definately recommend this one!

Good choice in an increasingly limited

Written by: Andy from Kensington, MD on September 21, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's really hard to find a good boombox these days. There are some really mediocre models made by - well, I won't mention any particular brands, but in some cases the 90 day warranty life is all too often just a little shorter than the functional life.

This model is reasonably sturdy. I wouldn't just toss it into the bed of a pick-up and go off-roading - I would expect that a fall off a picnic table might do some damage - but the controls and speakers are protected against the usual everyday "slings and arrows", such as switches rubbing against car door or cats sharpening their claws on speaker fabric (this unit uses metal grates which might dent a little but won't tear.)

But at the risk of repeating myself, a good boombox has become a rarity.

Most similar units are geared towards I-Pods these days. And you can plug in your I-Pod if you desire, as well as all manner of devices, given the proper adapter/cord(s). It works great with a laptop.

I only gave this unit four stars for two minor reasons.

(1) The radio reception is good, but not outstanding.

(2) Given that this is a largish unit, it would be nice if Sony had just given it a decent guage AC cord instead of the transformer-plug-with-a-flimsy-cord that is provided. All in all, I would recommend this unit as a portable or even a "bookshelf" surrogate.

Durable and sounds great.

Written by: richard from NW Indiana on June 3, 2008

Bought this unit to keep out by the pool as we tired of having to bring our old one in every night. Located the box under an overhang, still gets some rain on it during heavy downpours but has no affect with the operation of the box. MP3, CD and FM are all outstanding. The antenae never needs to be deployed for FM reception. Sound quality is very good for this type of unit and is capable of getting quite loud for those *party* nights.
Nice unit for rough use.

Great Boom Box

Written by: Patrice from Logan, UT on May 28, 2008

I bought this boom box for my PE class and I love it! I've had it for at least 2 years. I can transport it anywhere easily and it is very durable. It does not skip CD's which most boom boxes I've previously had do when kids jump by it. The sound is good and it has a bass booster. The only downside is that I wish the sound could go louder as a gym gets very noisy.

Good sounding, O.K. FM reception

Written by: Steve from Tucson AZ on February 17, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm using this in at my work (machine shop). The sound works great over the machine sounds, but the FM sensitivity for pulling in radio stations isn't anything special.
