Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great all around radio, cd player, iPod player, etc. It's the old boom box with the modern upgrade. Decent sound & portable. I was pretty happy with the price as well. Thank you Crutchfield...you beat all the other sites

Good for iPod & CD; Weak Radio

Written By IanWrong, Harrison, ME on Sunday, June 05, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit to keep at a summer cottage, wanting a "boom box" with iPod integration and an 'audio IN' jack for MP3 players. The iPod and CD work fine, but the FM radio reception is weak: the unit picks up approximately 20% of the available stations benchmarked against two other two radios in the cottage.

Sound is more than acceptable for a unit at this price point, with sufficient volume and quality for casual listening in a small house. Construction feels solid and the adjustable iPod tray works well.

My rating is based on my intended use for this unit - occasional use in a summer cottage - for which I probably would buy this unit again. If however I'd bought this for regular use at home I would have rated it lower and returned it for something with a better radio.

Great versatile compact player but poor sound quality

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great compact versatile player but I was very disappointed with the sound
quality. No base tones, I expected more from Sony. Other than sound it was a
nice unit. I did return it due to the poor sound quality.

Needed radio with a remote, CD player that has shuffle feature & Digit

Written By Troy, Charlottesville, VA on Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This item I needed for the main thing of replacing my old CD Player that didn'thave a shuffle function on it (I love to shuffle my music) and a digital radio tuner (forget about turning a dial to find local stations!). As a side note, You would not imagine how hard it is to find a small portable system that has a CD player anymore; everything seems to have an iPod dock these days! So this little boombox def. fit the bill - digital FM radio station tuner that allows up to 20 presets, radio comes with a nice handy remote (you can get about 6 ft decent signal coverage - it's not a long-range remote, CD player functionality with shuffle 1, shuffle all, repeat 1, repeat all, etc., audio in jack, line out jack, physical sleep mode button and one on the remote. The ipod function is handy if you really need it, but I do not and there are buttons on the remote to support basic ipod track play function. There is a megabass function on the unit, BUT it really does not produce the bass - really does not; it sounds tinny at best with the function on/off. What I did to modify this was to get a decent pair of portable computer speakers and plug into the audio output jack and now I have my bass. My setup was just for a bedroom so the sound produced is adequate for my needs and it won't be moved around much. The radio works for what I needed it for - small enough, portable, light & with the added speakers I get what I need.

iPod controls are very good, and are easy to use. Sound is good for a boombox.
Remote is intuitive and easy to use. The package works very well - so well that I have
two of them!

I purchased this CD Player for my husbands "Work Shop". He is very LOW TECH . I
thought this would be a good choice...and he just loves it .. works perfectly
for him and he gets a lot of pleasure from just relaxing to his tunes. Not the
greatest sound but for the price its the right choice.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This boombox is worth the money even though you are going to get better sound from most of the other iPod docking stations. It is hard to find something portable that has a CD player, radio, AND a docking station for an iPod/iPhone. The remote control is a big plus and the unit's portability makes it very convenient. Even though in the description it says that it will not charge an iPhone when placed in the equipped dock, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it did, which is another plus. I would recommend this product for its functionality and price.

Sony was good back in the day.

Written By Robert, Baltimore MD. on Wednesday, May 05, 2010

As far as sound quality goes it is poor. I own a Bose unit that sounds much better but its more than three times the price. I also own a unit called i Live, this piece of junk has a smoother sound than the Sony. The reason I got the Sony was because it also plays cd,s has a radio and is ac/dc. The Bose is AC only and just plays the iPod, same story with the iLive. If I spent full price on this unit I would return it because the sound quality is just poor and does no justice to the iPod. Its just a bit better than a tinny sounding unit. I think Sony could have made this thing sound richer and the iPod dock is like a cheep kids toy. Again If I had to get a unit in this price range and needed all the bells and whistles I would give the iLive line a try only because there low end unit sounds better than the Sony.

Worth the money

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit not for the iPod docking, but because it was the only reasonably priced boom box that accepted external audio input. I use it to stream music from Pandora on my Blackberry. It works very well for this and nicely remembers the last audio input setting (in my case: Aux In). The unit looks nice and doesn't sound "tinny". I would definitely recommend it.

Wish it had a cassette player...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this for my baby's room so he could have a little musical accompaniment when going to sleep. I originally couldn't decide whether to leave his music on cds or convert to mp3 format for the longest time, so this fits the bill perfectly. Size is good for my needs as it doesn't take up a huge footprint on my kid's nightstand. Sleek design - couldn't find the handle for the longest time ;). Sound is good. Radio tunes nicely and even my antiquated ipod mini fits and plays just fine once I adjusted the ipod tray. Note to reviewers who say the remote doesn't have full control of the ipod: I found that using the menu and 'forward' and 'reverse' buttons allowed me to toggle between menu selections/playlists albums/artists. Only thing is that unless you have superman vision, you still need to be within arms reach of the ipod to see what you're selecting anyway. Only giving this 4 stars, because it didn't suit my needs perfectly - or that, it would have also had an antiquated cassette tape player so I could play my son's hand-me-down kids tapes ;). Another con is that the iPod tray and cd door feel a little flimsy when opening/closing, but doesn't impact performance. We'll have to see how it holds up to little hands as my son gets more "interested" in it ;). Great little boom box otherwise.

Nice dock

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this for my wife's birthday. She has a 6th generation ipod Classic 120G. Works great. It charges the ipod too (at least for her 6th gen classic). CD player is nice to have as well. Also has an audio input so that she can play her MP3 as well using it with one of those cords that have an earphone jack on both sides.

Good for the money.

Does its job

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed an iPod dock that played CD's as well. Crutchfield had exactly what I needed. There are few manufacturers that make a simple CD player/iPod dock. The sound quality is not the greatest but is somewhat loud. It is perfect for background noise when working around the house. I ordered this while it was on back order, but I received it before the site said it would be back in stock. Thanks Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just wanted something to play an ipod, a CD once in a whlie, but also be able to pick up AM/FM from time to time, mostly in an outdoor situations...and sometimes on a small boat or at the beach....this seemed to be an inexpensive solution.
For the money (check scratch and dent deals and save a few bucks) you can't really beat it. I will say if you are looking for "great" sound and you are really particular about the quality of sound, you might be a bit disappointed.
Again, for the price (scratch & dent), I don't think there's much out there that can compare, and the sound quality is just fine for most people for a beater portable.

Would recommend - Good Value for $

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This boombox is everything it claims to be. It is easy to use, the sound is fine, the remote is handy, and it is very portable. The battery life is also very good! Do not expect this little box to put out BIG SOUND. It is great within it's comfort range, but turning it up will produce unpleasant distortion. I would highly recommend this for anyone who is looking for a simple iPod device that can produce nice sound in a smaller environment - like a bedroom, office, etc.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the money, this is a very good boom box. It would be nice to control selections from the unit as opposed to the iPod. Unless I am doing something wrong, you have to select the album or song from the iPod itself, then you can move forward, back or stop from the boom box. No big thing except I though you got full control from the boom box control. Otherwise the Sony sounds great and is easy to use.
