About the Sony Xplōd™ XM-ZZR3301

Buck Pomerantz
Sony's ZR Series XM-ZZR3301 amplifier features technology that'll help your music play cleanly, loudly, and without distortion. Active Thermal Control regulates the amp's internal temperature to prevent overheating, so your music won't shut down. The Dynamic Distortion Suppressor kicks in at higher volume levels to minimize harmonic distortions, so your bass stays clean.

This sharp-looking Sony delivers up to 600 watts RMS to your subs, so you will be feeling to your music. The low-pass filter optimizes your sub's performance, sending it the frequencies that make it sound its best in your enclosure. The bass boost adds extra kick to your bass-heavy tracks, while the subsonic filter blocks ultra-low frequencies that your subs struggle to reproduce.

Specifications

Features

Class D Amplifier: The XM-ZZR3301 amplifier is a Class D mono amp. Class D technology is a method to convert and amplify music signals with MOSFETs to high-speed pulse signals. Class D amps feature high efficiency and low heat generation.

Active Thermal Control: The ZZR3301 has an Active Thermal control which regulates the unit's operating temperature for stable, long-term playback at high volumes.

Protection Circuitry: This amplifier has 3-way protection circuitry which protects the amplifier in the following cases:

  • Thermal: Turns the amp off when the operating temperature is too high
  • Short Circuit: Turns the amp off when the speaker outputs are short-circuited
  • DC Offset: Turns the amp off when a DC current is generated

Dynamic Distortion Suppressor: The Dynamic Distortion Suppressor suppresses distortion that occurs at higher playback levels for clear bass reproduction.

LED: The amplifier has an LED strip on the top panel that glows blue when the amp is on. There is also an LED on the front panel that lights in green when the amp is on and red when the protection circuit is activated.

Low-pass Filter: The XM-ZZR3301 is equipped with a low-pass filter, continuously variable from 50-300 Hz, with a slope of 12 dB/octave. It is constantly active (cannot be switched off).

Subsonic Filter: The amp has a built-in subsonic filter, which eliminates extremely low frequencies which can rob power and cause damage to the speakers. The subsonic filter is variable between 6 and 70 Hz, with a slope of 12 dB per octave. Like the low-pass filter, the subsonic filter is constantly active.

Bass Boost: For added low frequency performance, the amplifier has a bass boost centered at 40 Hz, variable from 0 to 10 dB.

Terminal Cover: The XM-ZZR3301 comes with a rubber protective cap that slips over the power wire terminal strip to help prevent accidental short circuiting.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Speaker Outputs: Although this is a mono amplifier, there are screw terminals for two speakers (each terminal is 0.35" wide). They are not stereo outputs, but summed (L+R) mono, and internally wired in parallel. If you connect two 4-ohm speakers to the amp, the amplifier will see a 2-ohm load.

Power/Ground Terminals: The power and ground screw terminals are 0.54" wide to easily accommodate 4-gauge wire.

Remote Terminal: The remote turn on screw terminal is 0.35" wide. Note: If you are connecting the amplifier to a head unit that does not have a remote output, and the speaker-level input harness is used, the connection to the remote terminal does not need to be made. The amplifier will turn on when a high-level input signal is detected.

Speaker-level Input Harness: The amp comes with a speaker-level input harness with a 4-pin Molex plug. This allows you to easily connect the amplifier to a factory radio or a receiver without preamp outputs.

Preamp Output: This amplifier includes a stereo preamp output, which allows you to send an unfiltered signal to another amplifier. Note that you must be using the line level input, not the speaker-level input, in order to use the preamp output jacks.

Specifications

CEA-2006 Compliance: The specifications given by Sony for the XM-ZZR3301 amplifier comply with the new CEA-2006 Amplifier Power Standard from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

Minimum Impedance: The amplifier's minimum impedance is 2 Ohms.
