Our take on the AudioControl DQDX

by Bob Bihlmayer
AudioControl

Fine tuning your ride

An automobile poses some unique challenges when it comes to getting well-tuned, perfectly aligned sound. Road noise and poor speaker placement create problems that require equalization, your subwoofer needs to be tuned to your vehicle, and the sound from the left speakers reaches the driver before sound from the right speakers, making it difficult to obtain a clear stereo image. AudioControl designed the DQDX processor to solve these problems and more.

Time alignment

The DQDX allows you to delay the signal from the appropriate speakers so the sound from all speakers reaches the driver at the same time, creating a clear stereo image. 10ms of delay is available for L/R alignment, and 35ms for front/sub alignment, allowing you to fine-tune the speaker response to the driver's position.

Ins and outs

The DQDX includes six input and output channels, arranged in pairs for front, rear, and sub. Each input pair features a seven-band graphic EQ to help solve tonal problems. The outputs use a built-in line driver with a maximum output of 7.5Vrms to drive your amplifier to full power without having to crank the amp's input gain control. The result? More volume with less noise and distortion.

Even more control

The AudioControl DQDX features a 24 dB/octave Linkwitz-Riley alignment crossover. This sophisticated crossover offers a flat response without any peak or dip around the crossover frequency and avoids the phase irregularities of lesser crossovers. You can select from six crossover frequencies ranging from 50 to 500 Hz, or a Defeat setting that turns the crossover off.

The package also includes the ACR3 control knob. This remote control offers two modes: Program mode allows the user to adjust the speaker delay, while Music mode adjusts the subwoofer level. This gives you even more control over the sound, and allows you to adjust the settings without accessing the unit directly.

The AudioControl DQDX's capabilities give you a whole new level of control over your car's sound. See where it can take you.

Great Analog and Digital Processor

Written By Abraham Z., Kyle, TX on Saturday, March 22, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This processor is one of a kind. You get the best of both worlds, analog equalizer and digital signal delay. The remote controller is unique that it tunes the signal delay and then flips to control subwoofer volume. I love the fact that you can "shift" the sound to the center of the car. Now I can hear more instruments in different places along the front windshield. The sub now sounds up-front now instead of heavily in the rear of the vehicle. The equalizer is simple to use, but now you can adjust the sound differences if you are using different brand speakers in your ride. What Crutchfield failed to mention in its description is this: AudioControl added a Subsonic filter that is switchable from OFF, 20Hz and 30Hz. Works perfectly if you have a ported, sealed or free-air subwoofer. Helps to avoid blowing out your sub. The one drawback that I find is that the front/rear eq section is overlapped with the subwoofer eq. My opinion, it is worthless to have 125Hz in the sub section unless you are using 6.5" for woofers and not anything larger. If you are using 10" or larger, then 125Hz and 100Hz are an over adjustment since most subwoofers don't play very well above 80Hz. Other than that, I love this new processor. I am currently using it in my Subaru WRX withPioneer AVH-X5600BHS head unit, Focal PS165's up front (bi-amp'd), Focal AS165;s in the rear and JL Audio 10w3v3-2 in the trunk.
Pros:
7 band adjustment per front, rear and subwoofer section, 7.5v RMS line driver output, remote controller that allows you to adjust from the front of the vehicle.
Cons:
Over lapping lower eq frequencies in the sub section.

  • ty adrian and abraham. have installed the jl cleensweep with the oem radio, so i can keep all the factory phone and imid functions on my civic. i am really looking for a (pre-amp) equalizer. the factory hu has bass and treble and that b all. have jl jx500.1 (class D) for jl 10" sub. My jl xd400.4D is connected to 4 alpine type r 60 coaxials and two type r dome tweeters....sounds great but i want more control over the sq. any suggestions ? [ will r   Jun 03, 2014 ]
  • If you are using the factory radio, I would use the AudioControl DQ-61. It has speaker level inputs to eliminate knock down converters. Does the same as the DQDX. The AudioControl piece does not remove the factory eq curve, but fixes wasted bass with the Accubass function and signal processing. You are able to adjust the input signal as well as the output signal for a "hotter" signal to your amps. Be sure your amps can handle it or else it will cook the inputs. I adjusted my radio bass and treble to -6 and raised the AudioControl inputs to 1/2 way and outputs 3/4 open. This yielded the best clarity that I've had in a long time. [ ABRAHAM   Jun 03, 2014 ]
  • WR, I don't know that you can or would even want to use the CleanSweep with the DQDX, as the DQDX is a sound processor in and of itself. I installed mine in my 2013 Mustang GT and it greatly improved the SQ. The capability of the DQDX is amazing! I say remove the CleanSweep and install the DQDX. You won't be disappointed.
