About the AudioControl DQDX

Bob Bihlmayer

Fine tuning your ride

An automobile poses some unique challenges when it comes to getting well-tuned, perfectly aligned sound. Road noise and poor speaker placement create problems that require equalization, your subwoofer needs to be tuned to your vehicle, and the sound from the left speakers reaches the driver before sound from the right speakers, making it difficult to obtain a clear stereo image. AudioControl designed the DQDX processor to solve these problems and more.

Time alignment

The DQDX allows you to delay the signal from the appropriate speakers so the sound from all speakers reaches the driver at the same time, creating a clear stereo image. 10ms of delay is available for L/R alignment, and 35ms for front/sub alignment, allowing you to fine-tune the speaker response to the driver's position.

Ins and outs

The DQDX includes six input and output channels, arranged in pairs for front, rear, and sub. Each input pair features a seven-band graphic EQ to help solve tonal problems. The outputs use a built-in line driver with a maximum output of 7.5Vrms to drive your amplifier to full power without having to crank the amp's input gain control. The result? More volume with less noise and distortion.

Even more control

The AudioControl DQDX features a 24 dB/octave Linkwitz-Riley alignment crossover. This sophisticated crossover offers a flat response without any peak or dip around the crossover frequency and avoids the phase irregularities of lesser crossovers. You can select from six crossover frequencies ranging from 50 to 500 Hz, or a Defeat setting that turns the crossover off.

The package also includes the ACR3 control knob. This remote control offers two modes: Program mode allows the user to adjust the speaker delay, while Music mode adjusts the subwoofer level. This gives you even more control over the sound, and allows you to adjust the settings without accessing the unit directly.

The AudioControl DQDX's capabilities give you a whole new level of control over your car's sound. See where it can take you.

More details on the AudioControl DQDX

Product Research

Features

Overview: The DQDX is a 6-channel active DSP with built-in signal delay circuitry, equalizer, and electronic crossover.

Input Gain: The input gains for the front, rear, and subwoofer channels are set independently. A clipping indicator LED helps you match the input setting on the DQDX to the output of the source unit.

Output Level: There are also separate line level outputs for the front, rear, and subwoofer channels, and another LED helps you maximize the output level without clipping the signal.

Balanced/Unbalanced Input: This is typically left in the unbalanced (factory) position. If the source unit looks for a ground through the RCA cables, the ground loop will likely introduces noise into the system. Switching the input jumper to balanced might remove it.

Subsonic Filter: The PFM (Programmed Frequency Match) jumper sets the subsonic filter frequency on the subwoofer output; choose 20 Hz, 30 Hz, or Off (factory position).

Ground Isolation: The power supply ground is switchable, in case of ground loop noise. The factory position is fully isolated (typically the best choice), but can be changed to Ground or 200Ω.

Front to Sub Jumper: If the source unit has only front and rear RCA outputs, set the Front to Sub jumper to On to feed the subwoofer output from the front input.

Crossover: The crossover routs the high-pass signal to the front and rear outputs, and the low-pass signal to the subwoofer output. The crossover point options are 50 Hz, 60 Hz, 65 Hz, 70 Hz, 75 Hz, 80 Hz, 85 Hz, 90 Hz, 95 Hz, 100 Hz, 125 Hz, 150 Hz, 175 Hz, 200 Hz, 250 Hz, 300 Hz, 400 Hz, and 500 Hz.

Time Alignment: By delaying the left speaker output a few milliseconds, the Signal Delay feature lets you effectively center the listener (driver) between the left and right speakers, thus optimizing the sound stage. The Signal Delay feature also allows adjustment of the front speaker output relative to the subwoofer, to effectively bring the subwoofer forward in the car. AudioControl offers a free set-up app for iPhone and iPad, available at the AudioControl website.

Equalizer: The front, rear, and subwoofer outputs have independent 7-band equalizers. The front and rear EQ bands are centered at 125 Hz, 175 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, and 8 kHz. The subwoofer bands are centered at 31.5 Hz, 40 Hz, 50 Hz, 63 Hz, 80 Hz, 100 Hz, and 125 Hz. Each dial is continuously variable from -12 dB to +12 dB and there's a notch at the center position so it's easy to return to the flat setting.

Pink Noise Generator: A pink noise generator is built-in to help set the equalizer when using an RTA.

Remote: The included ACR-3 wired remote gives you easy access to the subwoofer output level. The remote is also used to program the Signal Delay circuit, and to bypass the signal processor, for an A/B comparison with and without the Signal Delay, equalizer, and crossover circuits. The remote is designed to be dash mounted, within reach of the driver; it can be mounted under the dash with the supplied bracket, or the bracket can be removed and the knob and LEDs can be custom mounted through the dash. Dimensions:

  • Width: 2.558"
  • Height: 1.477"
  • Depth: 1.811" (2.465" including knob)

Input/Output Level: The input gains and output levels are set independently for the front, rear, and sub channels. To help correctly set the input, a Maximized LED lights to indicate the input is just below clipping. The adjustable output level allows you to increase the source line voltage to the top of your amplifier's input range; up to 7.5 volts RMS.

Terminal Block: The power terminal is removable; the wiring is attached to the block, then the block is plugged into the DQDX. Each terminal block will accommodate wire up to 12 gauge.

The epicenter manual says to put the unit before eq/crossover, however in the dqdx manual the diagram show the epicenter after the dqdx(using front and year ipnuts only, with "front to sub on") Why is this contradictory, can you explain with way is correct.? And if it is infact o to put the unit after the dsp should you only uder front/rear inputs with the "front to sub" setting on.if

Q
I have a 2021 venza le with a stock radio- can i use this dsp unit ?
frank  Jul 28, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Frank, and thank you for your question. Yes, and no. By it self with a factory radio, no. What you also need to use this is a line converter. This DQDX only has RCA for the inputs side, but factory radios do not have RCA outputs. What you need is to convert the speaker wire outputs to RCA. Something that correct bass roll off like an LC7i would do the trick. www.crutchfield.com/p_161LC7IB/item.html

Does this have chime volume control?
victor  Apr 29, 2023

A
Greetings Victor, and thank you for your question. There is no volume control on the DQDX, but there are clipping indicator lights letting you know the signal is not as clean. Your volume will be controlled by the source unit.

Q
Factory radio bose system just need equalizer and keep bose amp 6 channel?
kenneth  Apr 16, 2020
1 answer
A
Not sure what Bose you have. I am running 2 amps, but if you can do 4 channels, front and rear, I am not sure if you can bridge the last set of channels for a sub. Also if your factory head unit has a dsp,it could be difficult to tune, unless you can disable the dsp. That's why I traded for the 6 channel eqs and it has been just what the doctor ordered. Take a peek at it because it's really sweet. It's got spkr level inputs and line driver.

ty adrian and abraham. have installed the jl cleensweep with the oem radio, so i can keep all the factory phone and imid functions on my civic. i am really looking for a (pre-amp) equalizer. the factory hu has bass and treble and that b all. have jl jx500.1 (class D) for jl 10" sub. My jl xd400.4D is connected to 4 alpine type r 60 coaxials and two type r dome tweeters....sounds great but i want more control over the sq. any suggestions ?

If you are using the factory radio, I would use the AudioControl DQ-61. It has speaker level inputs to eliminate knock down converters. Does the same as the DQDX. The AudioControl piece does not remove the factory eq curve, but fixes wasted bass with the Accubass function and signal processing. You are able to adjust the input signal as well as the output signal for a "hotter" signal to your amps. Be sure your amps can handle it or else it will cook the inputs. I adjusted my radio bass and treble to -6 and raised the AudioControl inputs to 1/2 way and outputs 3/4 open. This yielded the best clarity that I've had in a long time.

WR, I don't know that you can or would even want to use the CleanSweep with the DQDX, as the DQDX is a sound processor in and of itself. I installed mine in my 2013 Mustang GT and it greatly improved the SQ. The capability of the DQDX is amazing! I say remove the CleanSweep and install the DQDX. You won't be disappointed. Adrian

Q
How much amps can i hook up to this unit?
hitemup85  Mar 01, 2016

Honestly I'm not too sure. But the set up i had was two autotek mean machines for my highs, Front channel from the radio to the crossover and split between front and rear inputs. Front and rear going to separate amps. Then I had the sub line from the radio going to the crossover sub channel. I had that going to my sub amp powerbass xta 6000d. And worked fine but i started getting a weird noise from my highs. So the end result was that I took one highs amp out and disconnected the highs from the crossover and left the subs hooked up to get rid of the noise. In all I had 2 5 1/2's- 2 6 1/2's 2 6x9's 12 tweeters 4 PA's and 3 15's all in all i had 3 amps hooked up. . I hope this helps but as of right now I'll be purchasing the clarion mcd 360. Only because the dqdx might be a little too complex for different set ups. Remember it's a crossover and eq and bass processor all in one so there's always going to be short comings somewhere and mine was with the highs. Good luck bro.

You can hook up two amps to the DQDX unit. I have two hooked up to mine (one JL Audio 400/4 and one JL Audio 300/1). I'm very pleased with mine.
