About the AudioControl Epicenter® 1200

Buck Pomerantz

Bass power and processing

Can't get enough bass? AudioControl's Epicenter 1200 amplifier powers your subwoofer with up to 1200 watts RMS and features a bass processor that'll maximize the low-frequency punch in your music. Many sources of music such as satellite radio, downloads, and streaming services remove the deep bass when they compress the signal, so your subwoofer has nothing to work with. The Epicenter restores the low frequencies in your music, injecting deep bass into your classic rock or Tejano music, or kicking the beat up a couple notches for your hip hop or EDM.

The Epicenter restores the low frequencies in your music, injecting deep bass into your classic rock or Tejano music, or kicking the beat up a couple notches for your hip hop or EDM.

The Epicenter recreates the missing bass

AudioControl's patented bass restoration circuit analyzes the incoming signal and then restores low fundamental tones, increasing your bass response without stressing out your subwoofer. A selectable subsonic filter removes ultra-low bass from the signal so your subs will play louder and cleaner. The Epicenter will dramatically increase bass impact in your music. regardless of the source or style.

Versatile amplifier

The Epicenter 1200 can drive loads as low as 1 ohm, so it can work in a wide variety of subwoofer configurations. A variable low-pass filter helps keep your subs sounding clear and running efficiently. The amp comes with a wired remote control that lets you adjust your sub's volume and the "Epicenter effect" from the driver's seat.

Product Research

Features

Overview: This AudioControl Epicenter subwoofer amplifier is designed to deliver thunderous bass to your car audio system. It is equipped with the patented Epicenter Bass Restoration system, which restores the low frequency response that is affected by external factors. The Epicenter 1200 features a black brushed aluminum chassis, with black powder-coated cast alloy heat sinks and bottom panel in one piece. A black brushed aluminum cover is provided to protect the amp controls from tampering. A 2.5mm Allen wrench (supplied) is needed to remove the cover.

Power Output: The Epicenter 1200 is a highly-efficient Class D amplifier with a high-current design that is 1-ohm stable. The amplifier has the following output:

  • 400 watts RMS x 1 at 4Ω (at 14.4V)
  • 750 watts RMS x 1 at 2Ω
  • 1200 watts RMS x 1 at 1Ω

Maximum Input Level Control (MILC): The amplifier analyzes the input signal to detect any clipping. If the signal reaches the level of clipping, the MILC Source Clip LED glows red, prompting you to turn down the gain level. When the gain level is maximized, a green LED will glow to indicate the gain is set to the optimum level.

Epicenter Bass Restoration: The unique Epicenter Bass Restoration system features two controls, Sweep and Width, that helps restore bass frequencies that are lost due to vehicle acoustics, speaker and enclosure design and location, and the recording/playback process. The Sweep control lets you select a center frequency between 27Hz and 63Hz. The proper frequency is the one that's most affected. The Width control lets you control the shape of the filter centered on the chosen Sweep frequency. A 2-way switch lets you turn the Epicenter system on or off, as you desire. Once the Sweep and Width are set, the controls can be covered by the brushed aluminum panel.

ACR-3 Remote: The included ACR-3 remote lets you adjust the subwoofer level and the level of bass restoration from the driver's seat. The module has two modes and two LEDs to indicate which mode it's in. When the red LED is lit, the overall subwoofer level is controlled. Pressing the knob switches the mode to Epicenter Effect mode, and the amount of bass restoration is adjusted. The ACR-3 comes with a 20' cable.

System Expansion: The Epicenter 1200 features an Expansion Bus and switch that allows you to daisy-chain multiple amplifiers together using a single signal input and a single set of controls. This feature can be used to drive two subwoofers with two amplifiers, or drive a single sub with dual voice coils with separate amps on each voice coil. The Expansion Bus Mode switch can be set to Source (making it a "master" amp), or Link (making it a "slave" amp). The amp has In and Out Expansion Bus connections (single RCA jacks) for connecting between the amplifiers.

Controls: The Epicenter 1200's controls are located under a removable protective panel. The included 2.5mm Allen wrench is needed for removing the panel during setup. A flat-head screwdriver (not included) is needed to adjust the rotary controls. The amp's controls are as follows:

  • Gain: The rotary gain control lets you match the amplifier to the output of the source unit. With the patent-pending MILC level setting circuit (see above), you can adjust the gain to its optimum level. If clipping is detected on the input signal, a red LED will glow.
  • Crossover: The amp has a 24dB/octave Linkwitz-Riley low-pass crossover with an adjustable frequency of 30Hz to 250Hz. The low-pass crossover sets the upper frequency limit of the amplifier's output, and filters out the frequencies above the cutoff point for the best sound quality.
  • Epicenter Controls: The Sweep and Width rotary controls are used to restore lost bass frequencies via the Epicenter Bass Restoration system. The switch turns Epicenter on or off.
  • PFM Subsonic Filter: The PFM Subsonic Filter lets you eliminate super low frequencies that most speakers cannot handle cleanly. These frequencies waste power and cause damage to speakers. The PFM Subsonic Filter can be set to 16Hz or 32Hz, and has an 18dB/octave slope.
  • GTO Signal Sense: If you are connecting the amplifier to a factory stereo, or an aftermarket unit without preamp outputs and a remote turn-on lead, you can set the GTO Signal Sense to "On" and the amplifier will turn on when an audio signal is detected on the line-level or speaker-level inputs. After a period of time with no signal input, the amp will turn itself off.
  • Expansion Bus Mode: This 2-way switch lets you select the mode of the Expansion Bus. When set to Source, the amp becomes the Master source and controller, and the expansion bus RCA output will send a line-level signal to another amplifier, allowing you to daisy-chain multiple amps on a single input. When switched to Link, the amp becomes a slave amp, receiving signal and controls from a connected Master amp.
  • Output Polarity: The Output Polarity switch lets you select the polarity of the amplifier's output. When a subwoofer is "out-of-phase" with the rest of the sound system, bass response suffers. Switching the polarity of the output would likely improve bass response. The switch is also useful when using two amps to drive a single DVC subwoofer, designating one amp as in phase (0°) and the other out of phase (180°).

Connections: The Epicenter 1200's connections are aligned along one side of the amplifier for ease of installation. The amp's connections include:

  • Fuses: Three 40A ATO blade-type fuses are installed in the amplifier.
  • Power: Set-screw terminals are provided for connecting +12V Power, Ground, and Remote In. The set screws can be tightened/loosened with a Phillips-head screwdriver (not included). The Power and Ground terminals will accept up to 1/0-gauge wire, while the Remote In terminal accepts up to 8-gauge. A 150A fuse should be placed in-line on the power wire, no more than 18" from the battery.
  • Speaker Level Input: The 2-channel Speaker Level input has a Phoenix (or Euroblock) connector, with 4 screw terminals (L+/L-/R+/R-) for fastening the speaker wire from the source unit. The Phoenix connector can be removed for connecting the speaker wires, then plugged into the amplifier.
  • Line Level Input: Stereo RCA jacks are provided for connecting the amp to the source unit via RCA cables.
  • Expansion Bus In/Out: Separate In and Out RCA jacks are provided for sending the input signal to (out) or from (in) another daisy-chained Epicenter amplifier.
  • Remote Level Control: This RJ-14 telephone-type connection allows you to plug in the provided ACR-3 Remote. The ACR-3 controls the output level of the amplifier, as well as the level of the Epicenter Bass Restoration effect.
  • Subwoofer Output: Set-screw terminals are provided for connecting speaker wire up to 8 gauge. The amplifier will accept a load impedance of 1Ω or higher.
