Overview

Our take on the Niles GSS10

Try as they might, most outdoor speakers can't deliver the music's lowest tones. That's why Niles offers the GSS10 in-ground subwoofer. This 10" sub is designed to be buried 16"-18" under ground, leaving only its output port tube exposed. You'll get excellent bass performance over a broad area so your music system delivers full sound. The Niles GSS10 is made from industrial strength uPVC, the same type of material used in underground irrigation systems. The tube and its dome cover can be painted to match any environment. Its tough design is covered by Niles' limited lifetime warranty.

Separate amp required

The GSS10 has no built-in amplification or crossover, so it requires Niles' matching SWA500M amplifier. (The amp must be placed indoors.)

best outdoor subs on the market IMO. Running two of these in about one acre backyard with 4 RS5 Rock speakers and sounds as good as indoor system. Really impressive. Too bad they are being discontinued.

Pros: heavy deep bass

Cons: discontinued

Great subs for outdoors

So far I'm loving these. Paired a pair of these subs with the matching amp. I'm using for a outdoor movie theater at a park and work great. They add a real nice rumble giving a great movie experience. I only have 2 covering a area about 50' square probably would have hurt to have added another 1 or 2 but still make a noticeable difference. The vent sticking out of the ground is pretty good size not a problem for me just hid them under the bleachers but at home might be a bit more difficult to hide. Its probably a 3" pipe with a cap about 6-8" in diam. Seem built very well the only thing I wish could been a little different was the wire connections. It has a pigtail about 3' long with the wires pre-stripped and soldered not a problem for connecting to I am just not a fan of splicing a buried wire, always asking for trouble but we'll see.

Pros: Heavily built, good sound

Cons: wire connection could be better

Good product, but proper placement is vital

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These subs sound great, but it's important to understand how much ground you need to cover before you plan your layout. For example, I originally purchased (2) subwoofers to be powered by (2) 500w amps. I placed the subs about 45 feet apart in "logical" locations near the swimming pool so the 2 subs would add bass to anywhere around the pool and ideally beyond. Wrong! I ended up blowing the subs out twice because I had the sub-amp volume set to 10 and the SONOS amp (sub-rca out to niles sub amp) volume at 8 with the bass at 8. I realized that the 500w amp was too much for 1 500w subwoofer (maybe the SONOS sub out is hot and it was distorting). Anyways, the solution was to add MORE subs and space them much closer to one another. Final solution for my back yard of about 12,000 square feet was (10) Subwoofers powered by (5) Niles subwoofer amps which results in 250w/sub and I don't turn the sub-amp level higher than 7. You need to space the subs 20 feet apart so there is a little overlap. As a general rule, you are not going to hear a sub once you are more than 25 feet away unless it is in front of a concrete foundation (or inside a corner which really helps push the sound). In addition to the subs, I have 5 SONOS Amps powering 10 regular outdoor speakers consisting of 4 PSB, 4 Niles (little brown things which sound surprisingly good) and 2 Klipsche. I wish I knew when I started the project the general rule: 2 subs per 500w amp and subs need to be 20 feet apart max.

Pros: Good sound, fairly priced

Cons: Instructions should mention proper count and placement for a large backyard

Features

Overview: The Niles Audio GSS10 Garden In-Ground Subwoofer is designed to deliver powerful bass to extended outdoor listening areas. It is a natural complement to the Niles Audio GS4 Garden Satellite Speakers, or can enhance most any outdoor speaker system. The woofer enclosure is buried underground with only the bass port tube visible above ground. It is completely weatherproof, and comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

Construction: The GSS10 is constructed from industrial strength uPVC, which is used in modern underground plumbing and irrigation systems. The bandpass enclosure is cylindrical with the port tube extending from one end. The port tube is fully paintable to blend into your landscaping. It fastens to the enclosure with 8 Hex-head screws (supplied). In addition to being weatherproof, the enclosure and port tube can withstand temperature extremes of -50°F to 185°F.

Driver: The GSS10 features a passive 10" Mineral-filled Polypropylene cone woofer. It is designed to be used with a subwoofer amplifier, such as the Niles SWA-500M. Bass management should be applied to the speaker at the amplifier, as there is no crossover or other filters on the subwoofer. Other specifications include:

  • Recommended Amplifier Power: 50-500 watts
  • Frequency Response: 25 Hz to 110 Hz
  • Maximum SPL: 110dB
  • Impedance: 8 ohms nominal, 6 ohms minimum

In-Ground Installation: Once assembled, the subwoofer is ready for installation. The enclosure requires a hole approximately 14" wide, 30" long, and 16-18" deep. Placement near walls and corners will enhance the bass output. Burial-rated speaker wire should be run from the amplifier to the subwoofer location. Waterproof wire nuts are included for splicing on your own speaker wire. The recommended gauge of the speaker wire is determined by the maximum length needed:

Wire Gauge Maximum Distance
16 100 feet
14 150 feet
12 200 feet
