This is a really innovative and inexpensive solution for installation of Niles SD-8 series ceiling speakers. It provides optimum loading for the woofer while also protecting it from loose insulation, dust, etc. that could drop from above. No reason to try building your own when this is available.

Pros: Simple, effective design which can be used for either retrofit or new installations.

Overview: The Niles Audio RWE8C Rear Wave Enclosure is an accessory designed especially for the 8" Directed Soundfield series ceiling-mount loudspeakers. The enclosure provides superior-quality predictable sound for in-ceiling installations. It is manufactured to precise air volume specifications for the compatible speakers for deeper bass response. The enclosure also keeps sound waves from leaking into unwanted areas, such as adjacent rooms or spaces. It comes with 24" of speaker wire, connected internally to the enclosure's spring post terminals, and a batt of 100% Dacron insulation.

Compatible Speakers: The RWE8C is compatible with the DS8HD, DS8PR, and DS8FX Directed Soundfield speakers.

Installation: After connecting the enclosure's internal speaker wire to the speaker's terminals, the speaker and enclosure easily fit together with tabs and grooves. Once the speaker is in position, you can twist and lock it into place. The supplied set screw keeps the speaker from working loose. You will need an additional 2" of depth (on top of the required speaker mounting depth) and 10" of clearance to one side of the speaker opening for installing the enclosure.

Enclosure Terminals: The RWE8C is equipped with a pair of spring-loaded post terminals, which can accept up to 12-gauge speaker wire. For wire runs of less than 80 feet, 16-gauge wire is recommended. You should use 14-gauge wire for runs of 80-200 feet, and 12-gauge wire for runs over 200 feet.

Note: When running speaker wire inside walls or ceilings, special jacketed cable (CL-2 or CL-3) should be used to protect the wire and for fire prevention. If unsure, you should consult your local building inspectors about code compliance requirements.
