The Solo-6 IR in-wall keypad lets you control your Niles MultiZone audio system in one of your playback rooms. Its six-source capability makes it a perfect match for the Niles ZR-6 audio receiver.

This keypad features a built-in IR (infrared) sensor, so you can use a Niles R-8L remote to operate your system from across the room. One remote is provided with your MultiZone receiver, and extras are available through Niles for additional zones.

Six source buttons let you select and turn on the audio components in your system, while the cursor buttons provide basic playback control. You also get intuitive buttons for power, muting, and volume. White, bone, and almond color inserts let you match the keypad to your room's décor.

Standard "single-gang" junction box recommended for installation (available at most home improvement stores).

Features

Overview: The Niles Solo-6IR is a weather-resistant, single-gang accessory keypad designed to be used with the ZR-6 MultiZone receiver (connected via Cat-5 cable). In addition to the power, mute, and six master source keys, the Solo-6IR has a handy 5-way control for local volume and playback functions such as play, pause, previous, and next. It also has a plasma and LCD-proof infrared (IR) sensor for wireless remote control operation.

Functions: The Solo-6IR keypad gives you "One Touch To Entertainment" when your music or video source is activated via one of the six Master Keys. You can control basic playback functions and volume. Paired with the Numeric-6P keypad (item # 190NUM6P) you get numeric key access to playlists, discs, tracks, stations, or satellite/cable channels. The Numeric-6P also provides random, repeat, disc, and favorite keys.

Keys: The Solo-6IR features the following keys:

  • Master Keys: These six master keys can turn on and play the selected source device (radio, iPod, CD, satellite, TV, etc.). You can select from 16 laser-etched key covers with popular source names.
  • Control Keys: controls the zone volume up and down, plus appropriate playback functions
  • Off Key: press to turn off the zone; press and hold for 3 seconds to turn off the entire system
  • Mute Key: mutes the sound in the zone; press again to restore volume

Mounting: The Solo-6IR can be installed alone in a single-gang box using one of the supplied Decora faceplates in white, light almond, or bone. The Solo-6IR and the optional Numeric-6P keypad can be installed together in a dual-gang box. You will need to purchase a dual-width Decora faceplate to trim out the installation.

Weather-Resistant: When properly installed, the Solo-6IR can be used in moist indoor and sheltered outdoor environments such as patios, spas, bathrooms, and showers.

Solo-6 IR keypad works well

Written By Howard F, Santa Barbara, CA on Monday, March 12, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We have both Solo-6 IR and Solo-6 MD with LCD display controllers for ZR-6. The Solo-6 MD really shines if you are using a classic iPod to serve your music. The MD LCD display gives you metadata track selection and information from your iPod as well as radio channel info from the integrated ZR-6 radio. Also, admittedly the Solo-6MD units look nicer in the house. However we are almost exclusively streaming music from an internet radio source (Logitech duet) so we really don't use the iPod metadata display features all that much. For that the Solo-6 IR is actually easier, operates with a simple button selection, don't have to go through the LCD menu on the MD. We ended up putting the IR units on the outside of the house and the MD units on the inside for aesthetics. Both units work great and have served us well. I will add that if you have a large music collection on your iPod you may find the MD interface maddeningly tedious and slow since you can only page up or down 5 lines at a time. My wife can work both the MD and the IR units just fine which is the final litmus test in our household.

Pros: Easy to use, good if not using an iPod as your primary music source, good for low-traffic and guest areas of the house

Cons: If you are going to be selecting music from your iPod then spring for the MD (and the MD looks nicer in the house)

Spring for the Solo 6 MD

These things go great with my ZR-6!

I purchased 4 of these and 2 of the MD keypads and now I wish that I had purchased 6 of the MD's! If these are going into a "low traffic" area, this will be perfect for you!
