Our take on the Bazooka BT1214

by Dominic Devito

Enclosed Subwoofers 101

An enclosed subwoofer is a box with a subwoofer already installed. The advantage to buying an enclosed sub is that the manufacturer made the sub, then designed and built the box as a perfect match, so you'll get the best possible performance. Every enclosed sub has a maximum RMS power handling rating, so pair it with an amp with a similar RMS power rating to get the best performance.

A bass cannon

Bass makes up about 30% of your music, and it gives music its power and impact. A good subwoofer can make an average car audio system sound good, and a good car audio system sound great. Good bass is all about moving air, and a cylindrical tube translates the motion of its woofer into maximum air pressure so you hear and feel more bass. Bazooka designed the Bass Tube to act like a bass cannon, firing low frequencies throughout your vehicle.

Bass Tube efficiency

BT1214 12" Bass Tubes® enclosure

The BT1214 Bass Tube features a 12" polypropylene woofer with a twin-layer compressed foam surround for smooth excursion. The 4-layer voice coil ensures reliable power handling for plenty of punch, and its 4-ohm impedance allows you to power multiple tubes with a single amp. The tube design eliminates standing bass waves for accurate response and high efficiency. Find a good spot for a Bazooka Bass Tube in your vehicle and you'll still enjoy plenty of cargo room.

Big bass without losing space

Bass Tubes enclosures fit just about anywhere

A compact Bass Tubes enclosure will fit in almost any vehicle, and you can disconnect it in a snap if you need more cargo space. Since the tube's speaker and port are right next to each other, you can get amazing results by "corner loading" your tube — placing it in a corner of your trunk or cargo area so your vehicle's boundaries act as a natural amplifier, boosting bass production. Overview: The BT1214 features a water-resistant poly enclosure that houses a 12" poly woofer with a foam surround. The patented Bass Tube enclosure design eliminates bass standing waves for high accuracy, and superior efficiency.

5-Way Binding Posts: The 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade lugs, banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.

Installation: Each mounting strap has an attached mounting base that can be secured to your vehicle using the supplied self-tapping screws. Once the mounting bases are installed, the tube is held in place by the mounting straps. For best results, the tube should be mounted facing into a corner, and there should be 2" to 4" between the woofer and the corner into which the woofer is pointing.

Decent, but not great

Written By Sean, Omaha, NE on Thursday, May 31, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
This is a decent subwoofer, but I was surprised with the sound levels it was able to achieve. I purchased this unit to replace a single JBL GTO804 which had a torn rubber sound. I was looking for something that would play lower frequencies at higher levels. My vehicle has a trunk and I first tried the BT1214 positioned in the recommended location, next to the passenger side wheel well and pointed towards the rear of the vehicle. This took up a lot of room in the trunk so I repositioned it behind the rear seat and pointed at the passenger side wheel well. I could not hear any difference in sound quality or level between the two different locations, so that is where it was mounted.

I hooked up the Bazooka to the same amplifier I already had mounted for the GTO 804 and used the same settings for cutoff and gain, but was surprised that with 12 inch woofer in a vented enclosure, the sound levels were for the most part were no different than than the 8 inch GTO804 in a sealed enclosure. There was one notable exception, the BT1214 was able to play some seriously low frequencies at much higher levels than the JBL GTO804. Unfortunately when it came to sound quality, the BT1214 suffers the same limitation that is typical of almost all vented enclosures. Bass notes sound muddy compared to the tightness that comes from a sealed enclosure.

I did get what I wanted, higher output with low frequencies and I was expecting the degraded sound quality from the vented enclosure.
It will play low frequencies at high volumes. Installation is a breeze, find a spot to put it and secure the mounting straps with four screws, connect the leads and you are done.
The single biggest con is the price. For the price, even with Crutchfield's free shipping, I think it is too high for what you get. At $175 or lower I think it would be an better value.

Ever since I got my first bazooka 8" I'm hooked to improving my car audio. I've tried many boxes in my mustang convertible with its tiny trunk space but it seems that I've ended up with bazooka again. I've swaped the component subwoofer with a Kicker CVX 12" hooked to an amp and it was awesome! BUT I got married and now it's too much for my wife so I have to take it out. I've tried without the Bazooka but longing for the low end sound so after almost a month without it, I reinstalled it but with the original component sub for compromise. Now even thou I can't shake the neighbors window anymore but have the low end back that I've always wanted.
