Overview

Our take on the Kicker iKICK IK501

Get hard-hitting sound from your iPod

Let the Kicker iK501 crank out the tunes from your iPod or iPhone. The system's stereo speakers use 40 watts of total power and separate woofers and tweeters to slam out big, brawny sound. And the six-inch square passive radiator in the back reinforces low frequencies to give the bass real punch.

Kicker iKick IK501
Kicker iKick IK501 back

Grab the provided remote to control the system and operate basic functions on your iPod, such as play, pause, and track skip. Use the iK501's auxiliary input to hook up another audio source, such as a portable CD player or MP3 player. The system's composite video output lets you connect the iK501 to a TV and enjoy your iPod's videos "on the big screen."

And with the Kicker ZKPC1222 12-volt power converter, it's easy to keep the music going in your car or boat.

Excellent product. Great sound and bass response is wonderful. Controls are easy to use and the remote is nice. Interfaces well with my Ipod and I use the RCA Mini Phone plug to listen to music I have on my Samsung Galaxy. Great product.

Love this player! We were looking for something that had a better sound than the Bose but was still small. The iKick sounds great, with much less distortion than the Bose, especially for heavy base. We tried out the Zeppelin and like this one better, plus the cost is much lower.

Great product nice even sound. I have been wanting a nice stereo to listen to my iPod in the house and I wanted a quality yet inexpensive way to listen to my music. This product was recommended by a friend and it was the best electronic purchase in some time now.

Pros: Great price. Cheaper than the Bose system

Cons: No cons for me

We purchased a house with a small pool and wanted music by the pool. After going through the reviews on the Crutchfield web site, we purchased the iKick. We are using it with a 1st generation iPod Touch. The iKick works and sounds terrific. We were worried that it might not have enough volume but it has more than enough. We have never turned the volume up more than half way. Glad we got this instead of the Bose - which was $50 more at the time.

Pros: Works and sounds very good. Plenty of volume.

Cons: None

The soound is better than most for a box that size. The shape and carrying handle could have been given more thought. Care must be used in grabbing the box or the wooker may be famafed.

No bad .... not bad at all.

Dave from Pleasant Prairie, WI on 7/28/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased for residential garage tunes. For it's size, it does very well. Don't think you're going to feel a bass punch from a boom box, but you will hear the base just fine, even at louder volumes. It's worth the money.

Pros: Good sound. Not terribly expensive. Looks good.

Cons: One thing I noticed is the location of the carrying handle .... be careful when picking it up as it's possible to punch your fingers through the rear subwoofer if you grab it wrong. Secondly, I do wish these units would place their docking platforms so the iPod was facing up, not forward. These units usually sit on a table, which requires the operator to stoop down to use the iPod controls. It should lay flat on top of the unit which creates the "view of use" that feels more natural.

Kicker makes an outstanding product, so much so its surprising even startling once someone listens to its full capabilities. Kicker has a reputation for playing loud, but this device is equally adept at playing music in candle lit room. It is one of the most capable and durable units one could ever hope for in a portable device. From a style stand point, I have never been a big fan of the Darth Vader look, but the sound quality is good enough to be dynamic in any situation. This is a muscular device that has the spine to get it done no matter the background noise. You could be mechanic in a car garage or a school teacher, when you turn this player up it will can only be humbled by the roar of a plane taking off, close range outside at the airport. It is that dominant.

Pros: Quality sound, a durable shell for portability, an overall mighty companion to the one who is serious about their love for music.

Cons: None to report.

I bought the IK501 11 months ago at the beginning of my deployment for the sole purpose of having a speaker system in my room. I was a little startled by the size of the unit at first bc we have limited..very limited, space in our rooms. First time I turned it on i was blown away with the sound that came out of this thing, it is a MONSTER! and extremely clear. It eventually mad its way outdoors into the 130+ degree weather surviving extreme heat as well as unhealthy amounts of dust, in order to have some tunes while conducting position improvement or layouts of gear. It EASILY blasted music from one end of the firing point to the other with no distortion what so ever. Almost at the end of this rotation and it is still going strong...maybe I'll leave it behind for the new unit to enjoy.

The Kicker iKick sounds huge, easily filling large rooms with high quality sounds. The many positive reviews on this item are not overstated. I use it portable with my mp3 player or Blackberry, and at home it stays connected to my big screen and works great for concerts and movies.

Pros: Form factor, Sound, Simplicity

Mark R. from Bowling Green, OH on 2/4/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this device for our kitchen so my spouse and son could hook up their iPods and Jam. The bass is very good and overall sound quality good. It's tough to get tight bass out of a small package at this price point, but the 501 does a nice job. As with most digital players, if the source is over-compressed, this player will eccentuate that compression. I have not listened to it with an uncompressed source yet, but suspect the device will faithfully reproduce the material.

Pros: Price, quality of sound! Bass

Cons: Footprint

I could not ask for this product to work any better. Very satisfied with the sound quality, ability to adjust Bass & Treble. Sounds as good as the Bose I was considering. If a person is not satisfied with this player then they are just too hard to satisfy. Pleasure to deal with Crutchfield.

Pros: Sound is great & Bass & Treble adjustment & remote controlled.

Great Sound at a Great Price

soliver from Raleigh, NC on 1/24/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far I am enjoying listening to my I-pod on this speaker system. The sound is great at any volume. The only downside I have found (and there may be a way around it, I just haven't found it yet)is that I can not listen to the radio through the I-pod when it is docked, so I have to settle for whatever is uploaded to the I-pod. The Kicker iKICK IK501 may be a bit larger than some of the other products on the market, but it is light enough to move around and you can't really beat the price for the quality of music you get. The Crutchfield staff was also very helpful in answering our questions prior to our purchase. We are completely satisfied with our purchase!

Awesome

KoryR from New Hampshire on 12/6/2011

I have owned this dock for about 6 months now. Nothing but beautiful sound at every volume for every type of music I listen to. Bass is quite nice from such a small stereo system. I have used a variety of devices on it: a few different Ipod generations, and through the auxiliary have used various phones and laptops. Every time it works perfect! Crank the volume and you will be blown away by the quality from this small set up. Only issue is the size, it is a large and heavy unit for an Ipod Dock, this is probably due to the large speakers and mini sub woofer. If you want a small dock, this isn't it. If you want great sound...look no further.

Pros: Sound quality, bass, versatility

Cons: Size

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this system two yrs. now. First purchase for this type of setting, but found that it is awesome for all areas of the home. I take it from poolside to inside and prefer it over all my other systems. It has an awesome volume "carry" over my entire 4 acre backyard around pool, which is what it was initially purchased for, but have found its sound is great for wherever you want to take it. If you buy it you will not regret this purchase. Glad I did! Love Crutchfield! You can not go wrong with these guys!!!!!!!

WAY Better than Bose!

Brad from NC on 7/16/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for somethng to replace my old relinquished Bose Companion II speakers, for when I travel, and also wanted something I could hook my laptop or Blackberry in to for kitchen use. I had heard the Bose docks and was not impressed so I decided to try the iKick. At first I was a bit disappointed, I think due in part to the fact that I have Polk Audio in my living room and car and love them because of their warm, not too bright sound, and their kick due to high efficiency. So I took this unit on a weekend getaway and the more I trialed it, the more impressed I have become with it. Maybe it requires some break in, although not stated in the manual. Now I listen primarily to the iKick, and not my main system, at home. This thing is tight, good bass punch, very portable, and is way too loud for a hotel room, I must add. Love the remote and the blue display, the only thing I would add is a clock on the display. I hate ipods mainly because of the aac format and Itunes too. But the aux in is fine for my laptop or blackberry streaming Pandora. Highly recommend from a very discerning ear. The price is WELL worth it as well. Buy it, you won't be sorry you did!

I was looking into the Bose ipod system and, after reading the reviews and the recommendations for the kicker system, I decided to purchase this system. I have been blown away by the quality of the sound even at high volumes. I listen to a variety of music and the kicker has not yet disappointed. My only negative would be the remote--it becomes somewhat tedious navigating to a specific song, especially using the remote. Otherwise it is a great purchase!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As always, Crutchfield delivered the product timely. This unit sounds better than the Bose unit I recently returned. I was unhappy with the sound of the Bose. I am much happier with the sound of the IKICK 501. My only complaint is that when the unit was unplugged before turning it off, it would not turn back on. Perhaps it has an auto shutdown safety. I was thinking that I had to return the unit. I plugged it in about an hour later and it worked fine. I have not had any problems since by remembering to turn it off before unplugging.

I compared this to a Bose that cost a hundred dollars more that my friend had and this beat it hands down! Can't beat the sound this thing produces for the money. I listen to everything from Mozart to Metallica and this unit has no problem with the high horns of my classical and the low thumps of my hiphop. I would recommend this to anyone in the market.

Disappointing!!!!!!!!!!!

Stacey from Havertown, PA on 5/10/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After reading so many positive reviews from customers, I was very excited about purchasing this item. However, it arrived and I was sadly disappointed. It is very large and heavy with an awkward shape, and unlike the other reviewers I was very disappointed in the sound quality. I found the sound to be very heavy on bass and distorted the music from my iPod. The only pros I can offer are that its price is competitive to other products for the same purpose and it has the ability to adjust (manually, not from the remote) the bass and treble. It would be very awkward and I would be concerned of dropping the unit if I was going to pick it up and carry it to another room. This item was not for me and I am returning it.

very nice ipod speaker dock

Rodney H from Columbus,GA on 5/9/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all,I had a smaller speaker dock from another retailer,it sounded nice for its size but then I wanted something that sounded better and louder. So I started checking out the web looking at what other people said about other docks. There were good things said about the bose sounddock 10 cost too much for me.I already had heard the other series of bose, they sounded alright. Then you had the zeppelin that was rated higher then the bose but cost more.It was out of the picture then I ran across the ratings for this mostly 5 stars and half the price didn't know kicker made them. This thing sound nice, the highs are crisp and nice also good lows to.All the 5 stars you see are legit, the other sounddocks I mention can't sound that much better then this one.For a fact the other lower model bose don't. You would have to get sounddock 10 or the zeppelin to even compare to this one, 40 watts of amplified power and a passive 6by6 sub in the back and don't let passive fool you.It don't have to be amplified to bump.It is just like a ported box woofer loud. Kicker made this well,I like the price, this thing could easily be $300 and people would still buy it.Thanks kicker and crutchfield to all out there who want a nice speaker dock this is the one put on your favorite music invite some friends over have a party and this kicker sound dock will be the life of it.I'm listening to mine right now over and out.

Tom from New Jersey on 3/23/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you want the convenience of easy ipod playback, with big stereo sound- this is the one to get. Sounds as good as a bigger home system- clear mids & highs, tight bass. Throws sound very well outdoors as well. The only qualm I have is the remote- its really only good for skipping a song or adjusting the volume. If you have a lot of music on your ipod- will take forever to scroll through the menus. A track wheel like the one on the ipod would have been a nice feature for the remote. But, I can live with that!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was having a hard time finding a compatible a dock/speaker for a new ipod Touch 4g so I called Crutchfield for advice. The guy I spoke with recommended this Kicker. The reviews backed up his claims so I gave it a shot and ordered one. It is a compact, solid built little unit that puts out an amazing amount of quality sound for it's size. It is also less than 1/2 as much as a Bose and it has served our needs perfectly. The only con I can give it is that sometimes it's a little tricky when you dock the ipod, it has to be at just the right angle to make the connection. Other than that it's a great little unit, well worth the price.

Marco from Richmond, TX on 3/6/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me first start by thanking crutchfield for offering this product and for there excellent service and shipping. I bought this unit based only on the reviews thru crutchfield, I have never done that in the past without listening to the product first, but the consistant ratings of 5 couldn't be a mistake after reading 30 reviews. After listening to this product for a week from rock to classical, I've come to the conclusion that this unit is the benchmark to which all other units should be measured. The clarity and loundness is incredible. Just when you think that the music will distort after a certain volume, it doesn't, it just gets louder without distortion and this is what separates this unit from its rivals. I promise you that you will not be disappointed by this purchase.

I looked at all types and price ranges for portable boxes. I really was happy to buy from Crutchfield as I also got the 3 year warranty. I saw many reviews on different portables that said they sounded great yet didn't work after a period of time. The Kicker 501 sounded fantastic when I fired it up. Very clear and yet has the bass to really make a variety of music sound terrific. I liked the Bose unit yet it was a couple hundred dollars more than this box. So for me the sound and money spent was just perfect. Thanks again as I appreciate knowing I can play this for at least 3 more years and I have Crutchfield service behind me. Piece of mind.

I've been a long time fan of Kicker when it comes to car audio. I've had a few different L7 models and various Kicker amps in/out of my car over the years, so I know they make great products. When I saw that they offered an iPod speaker dock, I knew it had to be decent. This thing is amazing, at vol. 10 it's good listening level, at 20 you have to shout to have a conversation in my bedroom. This thing is loud, clear, and the bass is enough that my family said they heard it from outside the house. The thing cranks to a volume lvl. of 40, so I know it does all I can ask of it! I have all genres of music, rock, rap, pop, techno, and they all sound great. Kicker wins again!

I was pleasantly surprised on the bass and clarity of this unit, especially compared to the more expensive Bose units. The only feature missing is portability. You have to plug it into a 120V outlet. After owning this Kicker for !8 months now, I still find it nothing short of amazing. Sound is crisp, clear, and the bass response is exceptional. This is hands down the best sounding dock on the market IMO - yes better than the Bose. It's a bit larger than other units and does not have battery capabilities, but the sound is unequaled for an iPod dock. Livin Loud in a Small Package

Chevypower90 from MO on 1/17/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I only write reviews about products I feel are worth talking about, and this is one of them. I considered for a couple months before actually buying the unit. Finally I decided to try it. Upon buying the iKick, I was sure I wasn't going to get my money's worth. But I have been a Kicker fan for years now, and I have high expectations from them. So surely they wouldn't disappoint. The amount of sound this thing puts out is nothing short of impressive. And it gets LOUD without distortion. Almost up there in clarity with Bose and Klipsh units...almost. But it is louder. Something I noticed is the sub isn't powered by a separate amp. Why would Kicker do this? I can tell that it's underpowered. No biggie, but it would help. Only con I can see: the cardboard remote. No remote I have ever owned with those type of buttons last. The buttons will crack and break prematurely. Ease of navigation could be improved. Bottom line: It IS worth the money. For such a small and portable unit, you won't be disappointed. An upgrade to this would likely be: Slightly larger tweeters, 8" separately powered sub in the back, 40 watts for the speakers, with 80 watts to the sub. Possibly an LCD or LED display screen (to navigate easier at a distance). The unit would be bigger, but currently it is small enough to make a larger unit. Kicker should consider :)

Well compared this to the Dr. Dre Monster Beats. Well this one is equal at half the price. Buy this one or two and still walk away with coin in your pocket.

Great Speaker!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I usually don't write reviews, but thought this was worth talking about. I was seriously considering getting a Bose until I logged onto crutchfield and started reading reviews on this Kicker unit. I was a little skeptical but decided to take my chance on it. First impression on taking the unit out of the box was that it is a little smaller than I anticipated but overall I liked the looks of it. I plugged the unit in and went to put my iphone 3g w/otterbox onto the dock. Well, it wouldn't fit with the otterbox on it so I took it off and it fit. The remote controlled all of the ipod functions on my phone just fine. I was pretty amazed at how loud and clear the IK501 is. Now I wouldn't say the bass is wall shaking as some people describe it, but it is pretty darn good for a speaker system this size. I set the unit on my outdoor patio and with the volume at 20 I could hear it pretty much over my entire 1/2 acre yard. The volume goes all the way to 40 which is pretty loud yet still clear, hardly any distortion. It won't replace a home theater system, but it is comparable to most modern stereo systems that come in vehicles. I am completely happy with my purchase and for 1/2 the price of the Bose system it is a steal. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for speakers for their Ipod or Iphone.

BEST IPOD PLAYER TO DATE !!!

Dian from Philly, PA on 11/25/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This ipod player is absolutely amazing. I never knew that Kicker would make such high-quality "in-home" players and speakers since they're usually all about car stereos. But they have definitely raised the bar with this iKick player. The highs are extremely loud and crisp, and the bass is tight and sufficiently boomy for a 6-in. passive sub in the back. The volume control goes up to 40, but 10 or 11 was more than enough for me. The bass and treble settings go from 0 to +9, and I have mine at +5 for the treble and +3 for the bass, and again, that was quite enough for me. Kicker states that their bass frequency goes down to 50 hz on this one (which puts it right at the mid-bass area rather than the real low bass), but it sounded much lower than that (more like 35 hz), which means that the bass is really pronounced (for all us bass-heads out there). It is not window-shattering, but your ears can feel and enjoy it. The only minor gripe I have about this is that there's not much of a bass difference between +3 or +9. Anyway, I normally listen to EVERYTHING from hip-hop to rock to R&B to pop to jazz to classical, all in 3 different languages, and this player brings out the best from all those. Get it ! It will NOT disappoint !!

Awesome Speaker!

Brandon from San Luis Obispo , CA on 11/20/2010

Great speaker and great price! It awesome in a living room, but it also plays real well in my backyard. Lots of sound and bass for a small speaker. I bought an extended aux cord and use it to plug into the aux jack on my tv and it really works good for movies when you can't afford a surround sound system.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After my Bose soundwave died after over 20 yrs of use, I didn't think that I would be able to afford a unit with comparable sound and quality. When I looked on the Crutchfeild website and saw the Kicker IK501 ipod speakers, it looked great, the price was right, but I was skeptical. So, I checked out reviews online, and they were all good. I took a chance and ordered the Kicker IK501, and what a surprise I got. These speakers sound great. I use these speakers in a machine shop, and I can hear them loud and clear over the sound of the machinery. The people who I work with have commented on how good the system sounds. I am very happy with the system so far, and would recommend them to anyone.

Solid Sound

Slowe from Lexington, KY on 10/26/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Kicker ik501 puts out some serious sound out of a relatively small package. The other reviews stating that the sound is incredibly clear with no distortion at high volumes is completely accurate. The bass does not shake the windows but is more than adequate for an ipod dock. Overall, this is an excellent product and exceptional value. Highly recommended.

Kicker Kicks

Bill from Long Island NY on 10/7/2010

First off-I have a 2 year old M602 (BLK)-nice unit with remote with treble and bass adjustments-used with a 3rd Gen 4G IPOD NANO. I upgraded to a 16GB 5TH GEN NANO in August (to be able to add more songs)-and found out that the new IPOD will PLAY but NOT CHARGE. My IPOD consists of 1200 songs- mostly rock. I found this kicker unit online and did research-not only does it have a remote with treble/bass adjustments-but it is LOUD! AND CLEAR! The volume control goes up to 40- not necessary! The passive sub is GREAT! The spec says 40W-seems like more. It puts BOSE to shame-BOSE might have a more 'surround' sound-but the volume/treble/bass comes no where near that of the Kicker-and the adjustable remote is great. I was also looking for a unit that I could hook up to a receiver -I could do that with a headphone jack-but this Kicker unit has a audio LR output-in addition to a video output. And a AUX IN. There are no fancy items on this unit-no USB/no radio, just used for IPOD. The handle could be a little deeper to carry. I put a piece of velcro on the back of the remote and the back of the unit to be able to transport the remote easily. A definite buy!

The sound from this small package is very clean and loud. This unit has exceeded my expectations, and this from a former IASCA competitor. I do wish the carrying handle was a little bigger, but other than that worth the money.

Thought about the Bose unit but did not want to spring for the extra coin. I bought the Kicker without hearing it and happily was not dissappointed. I used this at a lake side birthday party last weekend and there was plenty of good quality bass and overall clarity filling the large area we were in. Would recommend this to a friend.

I had been looking at the Bose IPod dock for sometime but didn't want to part with that kind of money. I read several reviews on this Kicker and ordered it. I was not dissappointed whatsoever. The sound is awesome at any volume. Hard to believe so much bass from such a small package. I am very pleased with this and am thinking about ordering another.

Better than Harmon Kardon

L from Palm Coast, FL on 6/16/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you want deep bass and excellent sound quality throughout the volume spectrum including at crushing volume levels this product is for you. I have listened to my friends Harmon Kardon GO + Play unit and was seriously considering purchasing it, but this unit has better bass and you can play it really loud without any distortion. Also, the product smacks of quality with its blue digital display. If you desire quality sound, deep heart knocking bass, and concert level volume from a little box, buy this unit you will not be disappointed.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just got my ik501 and am very pleased with it. It has great bass especially due to the passive radiator. It sounds much better and stronger than my neighbor's Bose unit. A plus is that it has adjustable bass and treble plus and aux-in jack in the back. Music from the 1960's such as early Rolling Stones, etc. sound a little muddy but for music with good signal, you'll love it. I wish that it had an onboard battery though. And with the straight up mount for the ipod, the ipod screen is a little hard to see if the unit is below eye level.
