Customer Q&A

1 question already asked

Q
The 4 AWG power wire has a nice protective sleeve on the battery end (about 3'). However, most amps say to install the in-line fuse within 18" of the battery. So, my question is, should I cut the power cable within the area that has the protective at the correct point and then connect each end to the in-line fuse? Seems crazy to cut something put together so nicely. Or am I misunderstanding something? Thanks for any help.

I did. Its really not that bad and the ends are covered in the fuse holder. I ended up using the small zip ties to keep it from pulling away where it was cut. I agree. Seems nuts the way it was made. Hope that helps.

I had mine professionally done and that's what they did. I feel that's the only way to do it.

It doesn't really matter which end is where as long as the fuse is as close to the battery as possible. I myself cut the end with the protective sleeve so I had the protective sleeve on both sides of the fuse

Actually, I called Kicker. Their explanation was a good one. About 12-16" from the battery end of the power wire, you will find 2 shrink wrap pieces already "heated" to the protective loom (sleeve). There will be about 1.5 to 2 inches between them. There is also a yellow sticker between the 2 heat shrink pieces warning that the fuse must be placed within 18" of the battery. Simply cut the power wire in half right in the middle of those 2 pre-shrunk heat shrinks. Then, strip the wire loom and sheathing off the wire back to the heat shrinks. Place the 2 stripped ends of the power wire into the inline fuse holder. The stripped wire will go all the way into the fuse holder until the heat shrink pieces touch the fuse holder. Tighten the retaining bolts of the fuse holder down. What you're left with is a VERY professional looking power wire with an inline fuse holder built in - with the heat shrink right next to the fuse holder as if you put it there yourself. :) Really looks good. I'm really impressed with Kicker. They've got some well thought out, quality stuff!

I cut mine within the 18 inches. I was more concerned with having the in-line fuse close to the battery than the look of the cable. I LOVE the amp.

No matter how nice the wiring kit you always want to have an inline fuse within 3 feet of the battery. While I have seen people skip the fuse all together, if something shorts out, it's much cheaper to replace a fuse or 2 rather than a new amp. I have a fuse by the battery as well as before the amp, call me paranoid, however those are cheap fixes.

I took a razor blade and cut the protective sleeve and slid it back and installed the fuse. The sleeve frays a little but mine is still holding together just fine. The kit is worth the money that's for sure.

I did cut the wire close to the fuse holder. 8 inches. I got some heavy duty shrink tube and place it after cutting and removing the necessary insulation to instal the fuse holder. with a sharp blade cut the protective mesh, then the insulation and finally the wire. Then cut two 3 inch shrink tube and place over the the wire and the mesh. This will make the wire look perfect again.
