Our take on the Kicker 10CVR102

by Dominic Devito
Kicker

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Kicker CompVR subs let you kick out the jams without tearing a hole in your wallet. These subs handle plenty of power, and get their fierce sound from tough, injection-molded polypropylene cones with reliable Santoprene™ surrounds. The unique SoloKon™ cone with its 360-degree back bracing keeps going strong when the bass gets heavy, while perimeter venting in the strong steel basket keeps the voice coils cool for dependable performance.

The 10CVR102 10" sub sports dual 2-ohm voice coils that give you more wiring options when setting up your system. The sub's cool-looking black finish highlights the potent low end you'll hear and feel. Boat owners: Kicker certifies the CompVR subs for marine use, so you can generate some serious bass waves out on the water.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible. Most car amplifiers are stable down to 2 ohms in standard mode, or 4 ohms in bridged operation.

Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 2 ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 1 ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents a 4 ohm load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 2 ohm load.

Cone Design: The Comp VR's super-rigid injection-molded polypropylene cone features 360-degree back bracing to completely eliminate flex and distortion.

Surround: The optimized ribbed Santoprene surround allows extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL. The surround is double-stitched to the cone to add a mechanical fastener to the chemical adhesives. This prevents the cone and surround from separating in the harshest conditions.

Spiralead Tinsel Leads: The Comp VR features durable Spiralead tinsel leads, which are woven into the woofer's progressive-roll polycotton spider, for added strength and reliability.

Basket and Motor Assembly: The strong steel basket features perimeter venting to help cool the high-temperature voice coil wires and prevent breakdown. The overall motor structure design is based on technology found in Kicker's flagship Solo-Baric line of subwoofers, and allows the sub to handle more power and take more abuse. The high-mass solid pole piece removes potentially damaging heat.

Speaker Terminals: The spring loaded, nickel-plated terminals provide solid connections for speaker wire up to 8 gauge. Single banana plugs and pin connectors will also fit.

Break-in Period: Due to the complex nature of Kicker Comp VR speakers, they require a break-in period in order to produce optimum low-bass response. The high-performance suspension system makes the speaker very stiff out-of-the-box. Approximately 2 weeks of daily playing will allow the suspension to break-in and reach its optimum equilibrium. A broken-in subwoofer will exhibit stronger bass performance, smoother response, and greater low-bass extension.

Rubber Magnet Boot: A black rubber boot covers the outside edge of the magnet structure to improve the cosmetics of the woofer and protect the magnet during installation.

Enclosure Compatibility

Power Handling: The power handling specifications differ according to the type and size of the enclosure. The power handling specifications assume that both voice coils are in use. Note: Both voice coils in a dual voice coil speaker should always be connected.

Recommended Sealed Box Volume:

  • Compact (minimum enclosure volume): 0.8 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 400 watts RMS (200 watts per voice coil)
  • SQ (maximum enclosure volume): 3.0 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 300 watts RMS (150 watts per voice coil)

Recommended Vented Box Volume:

  • Compact: 1.25 cu/ft; 2" x 10.5" port opening; 20" port depth; the woofer can handle up to 300 watts RMS (150 watts per voice coil)
  • SQ: 1.75 cu/ft; 2.5" x 10.5" port opening; 20" port depth; the woofer can handle up to 300 watts RMS (150 watts per voice coil)

Great Sub

Written By Chase123, California on Sunday, March 02, 2014

This is a great sub for the price. It is not the most top of the line but it definately gets the job done. I have 1 of these hooked up with a Kenwood Kac-8105D 1000-Watt Class D Mono Amplifier in a ported box with 1 cubic feet of internal volume. It sounds great and can slap when I want it too. I mainly wanted to round out my system after replacing the stock speakers in my 2003 Honda Civic but I am pleasantly surprised that I can make my mirrors shake and turn heads. It is a very clean sound and worth every penny. Buy if you want to upgrade a stock system. If you want to rock competitions, you might want to get a higher quality sub. Make sure you give the sub the power it needs (300 rms- 400rms) or you will be lacking as with any sub. I would buy this sub again but they have a new model that looks interesting. I am just on a budget and this fit perfectly to what I was looking for. Hope this helps.
Pros:
Good Quality, Made well, slaps.
Cons:
Nothing as of yet.

RMS is KEY

Written By MagsWC, Minnesota on Sunday, December 22, 2013

I have this sub in a sealed box (fiber filled) and a 400 watt RMS crossfire amp. It sounds great and my girlfriend can hear it from in her room when I pull up. No one expects me to say, "it is one 10 inch sub." They think it is a couple 12's. You always want to overpower subs, especially a comp sub like this one. Don't run anything lower than 400 watt RMS. ALWAYS USE A CAPACITOR with a sub.
Pros:
If you know what you are doing it compliments any factory or aftermarket system.
Cons:
It isn't JL and it isn't high on WOW factor for looks and status.

they pound tha ground

Written By j13579, Charlotte, NC on Tuesday, August 06, 2013

Bad bass look at those people say they are not pounding well look at their amps they are under powering these woofers I run 2 CVR 10's on a kicker dx1000.1 amp and out rock 12's all day long with a small under the seat truck down fire box with barely enough air in a sealed box running on a 2 ohm load pounding the ground and every one around and setting off car alarms in an open parking lot with Sony 3 way 6.5 and 4x6 and a Sony head unit in 02 Chevy ext. Cab truck
Pros:
Lots of bass
Cons:
With the dx1000.1 amp need a cap as not enough power to keep lights from flashing when bass drops though I wouldn't need it with a 120 amp alternater but I was wrong before cap frad voltage would drop but now with cap bass is harder and louder and more voltage drop

Never again

Written By Nate, Logan,w.v. on Thursday, May 02, 2013

I bought this woofer in a factory ported kicker box from a local, but very well known, authorized dealer. Not Crutchfield! Alpine deck, 400rms pioneer amp, 4 awg wire kit, and 1 ferid cap. Where did I go wrong? I was and am still disappointed even though I left it in my truck when I traded it in. I have heard 8's sound better. However, failed attempt after failed attempt I could not burn them out.
Pros:
Sounds ok in the vehicle
Cons:
Some factory systems sound better

Kicker 10CVR102

Written By MattO, Maine on Thursday, July 19, 2012

i'll start out by saying this is my first experience with car audio. i bought this sub a few days ago and had no problems wiring it right into a box i already had. at first i thought it sounded terrible.. come to find out i turned down the subwoofer level to 1 on my head unit. but once i turned it back up it sounded pretty good. not the hard pounding i expected, but i'm assuming that's because it's not "broken in" yet. i'm giving it 300 watts at 4 ohms so it has plenty of head room. once it's broken in i'll come back here and give a better review.

UPDATE: 9/11/12 - so like i said, i'd be back when my sub was broken in. it's gotten a little better. no real problems with it still. it definitely sounds better after a couple weeks of break in time. but from what i've learned about subs is if you want a real loud, accurate bass sound, spend the money and get a nice one. for the price this things great. but don't expect a whole lot from it.

Hit Hard!

Written By Jason, Dunn, NC on Tuesday, February 22, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These subs hit extremely hard for 10's. People ask me all the time what do you have 12's?
Trust me they hit like 12's and great for the price. Crutchfield will continue to have my
business for many years to come.

Thanks again,
Jason

1 question already asked

what size amp do i need to power this sub? [ brian  Dec 05, 2013 ]
2 answers
  • Is this speaker a shallow mounting sub wondering cause i have a ported ten inch kicker box just it only peaks at 600 n i need one that peaker at 800 n the box is like a slanted truck style box. [ Rick   Mar 04, 2014 ]
  • Ideally you would want an amp that will provide at least 80% of the rated RMS power of the subwoofer. In this case you would want an amplifier that will provide 320+ watts of RMS power to the subwoofer. For help in selecting the best amp to match with this sub, please contact an Advisor by phone or chat. [ Jeff Staff  Dec 05, 2013 ]
