Our take on the Kicker Comp C8

The 8" Comp C8 (that's short for "competition") might be Kicker's smallest and most affordable subwoofer, but it'll rock your world with maximum bass for the buck!

The rigid polymineral cone and signature Inverted Structural Dome dustcap resist flexing and move lots of air for serious bass. An extended, vented pole piece minimizes built-up heat and distortion, while perimeter venting provides even more welcome cooling. The thoroughly up-to-date cosmetics are bound to catch your eye; grab one of Kicker's futuristic-looking grilles (optional — see "Accessories") for an even fiercer look.

Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Hemispherical Polymineral Cone: The cone is a hemispherical Polymineral design with an Inverted Structural Dome. It is very rigid with high internal damping and excellent resistance to sunlight, pollution and moisture.

Double-stitched Pleated Surround: This subwoofer uses a tough, flexible, highly tear-resistant polyester foam surround. The surround is pleated and double-stitched to the cone edge, making separation between them virtually impossible.

Inverted Structural Dome: The Inverted Structural Dome replaces a conventional dustcap and locks into the cone for unmatched structural integrity and greatly reduced cone flexing/resonance.

Voice Coil Former: The hi-temp Kapton voice coil former protects against warped, rubbing voice coils.

Extended Pole Piece: The extended pole piece creates a broad, symmetrical magnetic field for superior power handling, precise voice coil control, and very low deep bass distortion. Venting in the pole piece eliminates noise and distortion caused by huge amounts of airflow created by cone excursion.

Black Plating: A blackened pole piece provides effective heat transfer and cool operation for maximum power handling.

Bumped Back Plate: The deep bumped back plate lets the voice coil reach maximum excursion without bottoming-out.

Perimeter Venting: The perimeter venting cooling system continuously pumps hot air away from the voice coils, replacing it with cool outside air.

Gasket: A rubber gasket insures an airtight seal.

Enclosure Compatibility: This woofer can provide extended bass in sealed and vented enclosures (please see the "Enclosure Compatibility" section for more information on the recommended enclosures). In addition, the woofer can be used in free-air applications.

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: When mounted in a sealed enclosure, the woofer delivers very smooth bass response with good low-bass extension. The sealed box sizes recommended by Kicker range from 0.5 cu/ft to 1.2 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal enclosure size recommended by Kicker is 0.5 cu/ft.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: When mounted in a vented enclosure, the woofer can give you more output than it will in a sealed box, at certain frequencies. The vented box sizes recommended by Kicker range from 0.8 cu/ft to 1.2 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal enclosure size recommended by Kicker is 0.8 cu/ft. A vented enclosure with an internal volume of 0.8 cu/ft uses one 3" diameter x 7" long port.

Free-air Mounting: In addition to being compatible with sealed and vented enclosures, the woofer can be used in free-air applications. A free-air subwoofer is designed to be mounted on a baffle board, which separates two areas of the vehicle. For instance, you could mount this woofer to a board attached to the rear deck or placed in the trunk against the rear seat. The trunk acts as the enclosure housing the subwoofer.

The type of bass you get from your component subwoofer doesn't depend on the woofer alone. You'll need a strong, tightly constructed enclosure for optimum subwoofer performance.
