About the Kicker DXA250.1

Buck Pomerantz

Power for bass

Kicker's DXA250.1 amplifier will reliably produce great-sounding bass — the kind that makes listening to music in your car more fun. The DXA250.1 puts out up to 250 watts RMS from a very compact chassis that'll fit into most vehicles.

Works with a factory stereo

Kicker's Fail-Safe Integration Technology (FIT™) allows you to tap into your vehicle's factory speaker wiring for the amp's input signals without needing a converter. The "differential-balanced" inputs also help prevent audio interference and noise from entering the system.

Controls to help get the job done

The DXA250.1's low-pass filter adjusts the range of bass going to your subs so they can play more cleanly and efficiently, while a bass boost can add some extra foundation to the sound if you want. You can add an optional remote control to adjust your subwoofer's volume from the front seat.

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement methods for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for determining an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured over the full frequency range of the amp with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N). Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels at a reference of 1 watt. CEA-2006 allows consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers on equal footing. Measured under CEA-2006 conditions the Kicker DXA250.1 is rated at 125 watts RMS x 1 channel into a 4-ohm load and the signal to noise ratio is >95 dB. Additional specs listed in the manual (but not listed as CEA-2006 compliant) include 250 watts RMS x 1 channel into a 2-ohm load (measured using a 14.4 volt power supply with no more than 1% THD+N) and 95 dB signal-to-noise ratio (measured at the rated power output).

Auto Turn-On: There are two ways to automatically turn on the amplifier. Most aftermarket car stereo head units will have a remote turn-on lead, which can be extended to the amplifier location and connected to the amp's Remote terminal. If connecting the amplifier to a factory stereo, or a head unit without a remote turn-on lead, the amp can automatically turn on using the DC Offset mode. The amp detects a 6-volt DC surge on the signal inputs and turns the amplifier on. There is no switch on the amp to select the Turn-On method.

Protection Circuitry: The DXA250.1 has protection circuitry that will turn the amp off in the event of overheating, over voltage (over 16 volt input), under voltage (under 10 volt input), and short circuit (speaker output). If the Protection LED on the right side of the amp illuminates red, the protection circuit has engaged and the amp will not play until the problem is resolved.

Dual Input Sensitivity: The DXA250.1 can receive low- or high-level signals from your car stereo source unit at the amplifier's left and right RCA inputs. The low-level signal can be sent from the source unit's RCA line-level outputs. In this case, the Input Sensitivity switch on the amp should be set to "LO". A high-level signal can come from the source unit's speaker outputs, and connected to the amplifier using the Kicker KISL adapters. The Input Level switch should be set to "HI".

Fail-Safe Integration Technology (FIT): FIT utilizes isolated differential inputs, rejecting noise and electrical interference for the quietest operation possible. FIT also allows Kicker amps to accept output from nearly any factory or aftermarket head unit.

Controls

Input Level: The DXA250.1 has a two position (in/out) switch to set the input level type. It can be pressed in for High (for speaker level) or set to out for Low (for line level).

Gain: The input gain is continuously variable, labeled 0 to 11. The gain range is governed by the input level switch: 250mV to 10V for speaker level (HI) and 125mV to 5V for line level (LO). A small screwdriver is needed to adjust the gain.

Crossover Frequency: The internal low pass crossover is always active (it cannot be bypassed). The crossover point is continuously variable between 50 and 200 Hz. The slope is 12 dB/octave. A small screwdriver is needed to adjust the crossover frequency.

KickEQ Bass Boost: The KickEQ bass boost circuit provides a signal boost centered at 40 Hz. The bass boost is continuously variable between 0 and 12dB. A small screwdriver is needed to adjust the amount of bass boost.

Subsonic Filter: Frequencies that cannot be reproduced by the subwoofer do not become sound, but unnecessary oscillations causing distortion. These frequencies also waste amplifier power and can damage speakers. The subsonic filter removes inaudible frequencies to improve the performance of the speakers by eliminating this harmful distortion. The 24 dB/octave subsonic filter's crossover point is 25 Hz.

Optional CXARC Remote Bass Level Control: The DXA250.1 is compatible with the optional CXARC remote bass level control which allows you to remotely control the output level of the amplifier. The CXARC's control knob can be mounted near the driver's seat of your vehicle, while the control's 19.75' cable is extended to the amplifier location.

Installation

Wiring Recommendations: Kicker recommends that the amplifier be connected to the vehicle's battery using 8 Gauge power and ground wiring. An external 40 amp fuse should be installed on the power wire within 18" of the battery. There are no fuses included or built into the amplifier.

Kicker Extended Warranty Offer: Kicker will extend the amp's standard warranty by an additional year (for a total warranty of three years) when it is installed with a qualifying Kicker amplifier installation kit. Kicker recommends the PK8, CK8, and ZCK84 amp wiring kits for this amp. The amplifier and installation kit must be purchased from an authorized Kicker dealer.

Connections

Left Side of Amplifier:

  • GND (ground): screw terminal; accepts spade connector up to 0.5" wide
  • REM (remote turn-on): screw terminal; accepts spade connector up to 0.33" wide
  • +12V (power): screw terminal; accepts spade connector up to 0.5" wide
  • Speaker Outputs: screw terminals; accepts spade connectors up to 0.32" wide; there are terminals for two subwoofers, internally shorted together

Right Side of Amplifier:

  • RCA Inputs: one pair of RCA jacks, used for line level or speaker level inputs with KISL
  • RCA Outputs: one pair of RCA outputs; useful for adding another amp
  • Remote Bass: 3.5mm jack (mini-jack) for use with the optional CXARC remote bass level control

Customer Q&A

3 questions already asked

Q
Will this work with a solo svc 8 ohm sub ??
aaron  Apr 04, 2016
2 answers
A
It will, but I don't recommend. The amp is 250W at 2 ohm...125W at 4 ohm. Meaning about 62.5watts at 8 ohms. More importantly, ohms is resistance meaning an 8 ohm speaker has more resistance. This requires you to turn up the gain to get desired output...this over works the amp, amp get hot, amp may go poof!

Yes and gives a great sound

Q
Kicker dxa250.1 compatible with 1 svc 8ohm sub ??
aaron  Apr 04, 2016

A
Compatible? Sure. I mean; the 8 Ohm impedance definitely will not harm the amplifier but the wattage from the amp at that impedance (around 62.5 watts RMS) may not be enough to power the sub properly. Your sub will likely need more wattage than this so, check the manufacturer's recommended continuous (RMS) power range to be sure. I hope that helps!
