Overview

Our take on the Kicker 41DSC54

As if Kicker wasn't already stiff competition for any affordable car speaker, their DS-Series speakers once again raise the bar. In addition to providing excellent sound, these Kickers offer a thin profile that allows them to fit in more vehicles.

Kicker 41DSC54

Here's the Kicker

As if Kicker wasn't already stiff competition for any affordable car speaker, their DS-Series speakers once again raise the bar. In addition to providing excellent sound, these Kickers offer a thin profile that allows them to fit in more vehicles.

Solid sound

The 41DSC54 5-1/4" speakers will give you clarity like you've never had with your factory speakers. The 2-way design recreates a dynamic sound, dedicating the highs to the PEI domed tweeter while sending the midrange and lows to the 5-1/4" polypropylene woofer. The 41DSC54's highly sensitive design conjures hefty volume even from low-powered factory radios, so you can crank your tunes and keep 'em blasting the whole ride.

Scooped these up on special and glad I did. You can't beat it for the value. They look great once installed. Bass could use a little help, but as a midrange speaker don't get any better

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these Kicker speakers to replace a pair of already installed aftermarket speakers in my overhead soundbar that werent up to par. Couldnt be happier with how easily they were installed, literally 4 screws each speaker, and how amazing they sound. Great upgrade & even better price. I bought a set that were "open box" and was worried how they might look/sound. No need to worry, they arrived looking and sounding just like new. Dont hesitate to buy yourself a pair.

Pros: Price, Ease of installation

Cons: None

Disappointing

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my factory front speakers in my car with these to clear up the muddiness from my factory paper cones. These did cure the muddiness, but they just sounded off. When I replaced my head unit, due to unexpected technicalities, I was left to running sound through only my front two speakers (these) for about a week while parts shipped. It sounded like my music source was 64 kbps. There was a relatively full range of sound, but it just sounded hollow and really lacking in presence. I replace these with a set of Rockfords that I had previously shelved for being too bright, but the difference compared to these kickers was like the difference between listening to music on your phone vs. a decent boom box. I also purchased the 3.5" kicker D series, which I actually like; these sound nothing like those.

Pros: Better bass response than the several other 5 1/4 inchers I tried in this application.

Cons: Really hollow tinny sound.

Good Speakers...but not a direct replacement for OEM

Written by: Kerry from Farmington, MO on March 13, 2016

1999 Jeep Cherokee
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speakers are a marginal improvement over the Jeep Cherokee OEM speakers however they do require drilling new mounting holes in the front doors. In the rear overhead speaker pods they barely fit the mounting screw locations as the speaker mounting holes are much closer together than the OEM speaker mounts.. Had I known the front 5 1/4" speaker would require drilling...I would have gone with the 6 1/2" speakers for both front and rear. The description implied the 5 1/4" speakers would fit the front doors without modification and this is not true. Also...one of the speakers had a disconnected positive wire between the speaker coil and male connection which had to be re-soldered. The repair was successful but that does not speak well for Kicker's quality control, as that specific speaker was not working out of the box. A second speaker had the smaller negative terminal bent over 120 deg apparently due to rough handling. It was easily straightened...but again...the damage should have been caught by Kicker QC before shipment.

Pros: They sound better than OEM speakers. The open box option saved $10 / speaker

Cons: They require re-drilling mounting holes in Jeep Cherokee front doors as the mounting holes do NOT match up with the OEM mounting holes at all. The rear speaker mounting holes can be made to fit (barely)...buy they are not the same center to center distance as the OEM speakers. Quality control is lacking with two separate issues which had to be corrected out of four speakers.

These speakers have a plain basic look but when they are installed correctly they sound great after installing new wiring to bypass the original amp and tweeters that was in the factory system. After buying 4 new speakers with supplies and delivered in 3 days all under $90.00 I know where I will shop from now on.

Pros: Great sound, best price, and fast shipping.

Installed the speakers on my 2014 Wrangler Sport's Sound bar. Took a bit more than I'd like, basically because I lack general automotive skills. Could instantly hear the difference over the factory speakers. Couldn't be happier with the purchase. First speaker took about 45 mins but I got the hang of it and completed the job in 1 hour.

Pros: Easy to shop online and I knew which speakers would fit my vehicle Came with all necessary installation equipment to include wiring Sounds great Affordable Easy instructions/Installation Even contacted Crutchfield via online chat to ask a few general questions. Answered promptly and didn't persuade me to buy products that are unnecessary.

Cons: None right now. Will definitely purchase from Crutchfield.com in the future

Great Speakers. I used these to replace all four of my factory 1999 ford ranger speakers. These, paired with a new JVC head unit, resulted in an increadible improvement overall of the sound and quality of the system. These speakers lacked some of the bass I was looking for, however not much should be expected out of 5 inch speakers and I will be getting a sub to supplement.

Pros: Easy to install Clear Includes adapters Great Value

Cons: Lacks bass

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these kickers to put in the doors of an 03' freightliner. It had an extreme width restriction and the Crutchfield advisor that i spoke with suggested them. They are working nicely to replace old busted speakers in a truck that i don't own and will be driving for a relatively short time, like 3 to 4 months tops, just during harvest time. If i owned the truck and intended on driving it for years i would try to find better but for like the price you cant beat these speakers. They are line the old saying you get what you pay for. They are definately worth the money I paid. Am happy with them.

The material is too thick, so the metal sleeves that hold the screws don't go all the way in. But this is nothing that can't be solved, just use nuts that fit your screws and your speakers will be held even tighter.

Decent speakers for the budget price. Purchased to replace stock OEM Mid-Panel Speakers in a 2006 Honda Odyssey with stock head unit. Perfect fit with the Crutchfiled supplied adapter ring and wiring harness. Definitely a step up, with noticeable sound difference for the better. One minor complaint is the lack of bass, but I knew that was going to be the case when I purchased these with the current setup in the van.

Pros: +Very simple install - takes no more than 10 minutes if you don't goof around (just need a Philips screwdriver, and a prying tool to pop off the speaker cover; +Decent price, which includes the Crutchfield Installation Guide for Beginners's, wiring harness to plug in the new speakers, and adapter ring to match the Speaker to your existing speaker mouunt.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speakers were easy to install in my 2000 dodge ram, but they are disappointing, as they distort and have a bit of a crackle to them. I replaced my stock speakers to get better sound with the Windows down. The stock speakers sounded better

Pros: Easy to install with supplied brackets

Cons: Poor sound quality

Crutchfield response on June 23, 2015 That's a common reaction when replacing car speakers. In the case of these Kicker speakers, they're going to need more power than your factory speakers needed in order to sound their best. They likely won't sound good at all on a factory stereo. You'll either need to add an aftermarket stereo or an amplifier (a small, 40-50 watts, 4-channel amp can supply twice the power of an aftermarket stereo and three or four times the power of the typical factory radio) or return these and get speakers with a higher sensitivity. Either way, we'll be glad to help - just give us a call.

Great sound. Easy install. Came with the harnesses but I just bypassed it but cut and splice the og speaker wires, striping then applying them to these with electric tape. As long as you have a decent aftermarket head unit you can power these no problem with out an amp. These combined with my 2 12in kicker subs, you can hear my down the block. No distortion at high volume either. Little to no mid bass. Which if you run any sub set up is not a problem. Plan to grab another set. The 6x9s and tweeters to complete my car

Pros: Great mids Great highs Loud and crisp Little to no distortion at very high volume Great kicker quality at that low kicker price Great materials for the price as well.

Cons: Little to no mid bass

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these speakers and installed them in my 2011 Ford Fiesta this morning. I had to call customer service and a gentleman named Eli helped me determine which wires, using my car's wiring diagram and harness, to splice with the speakers. He made it quick and easy. Crutchfield's customer service is great and super helpful. As for the speakers, they sound great in my smaller vehicle. I'm wasn't looking for a serious upgrade. I simply wanted to replace one of the stock speakers in the front doors because one of them was buzzing at basically any volume level and driving me nuts during my commute. I went with these and they definitely sound better over stock. They seem to be very clear at higher volumes and they have plenty of bass for my needs. I just enjoy listening to my music without blowing out anyone's ear drums.

Pros: Excellent replacement for the stock speakers. Sound is quite clear at higher volume levels.

Cons: None as long as your expectations meet the specification of this product.

Great punch from A 5 1/4

Written by: Ron from Massachusetts on April 23, 2015

These little speaker replaced a stock sub and tweeter in my '03 Regal. Sound fantastic compared to the original. I have hooked to a 40 channel JVC head unit and it handles it great. I looked for a low frequency response speaker to handle some lows. Now don't get me wrong it's not going to have bass like a 10 inch woofer, but it holds it's own without distortion.

I give this 1 star only because I made the decision to buy on my own. I know they were inexpensive, but I felt these speakers would be a definite upgrade from the stock Saturn Outlook speakers. These replaced the rear door panel speakers, so requirements were minimal, but I expected more than the equivalent of tin cans. I would replace them but it's just easier to adjust the fade to zero. Call a Crutchfield advisor before making your decision.

Pros: Great sound and fit

Cons: The installation instructions said to reuse the original speaker grates. I assume because of a fitment issue in my Jeep. The Kicker grates fit nicely and are far more acoustically transparent. Throw your old ones out and use the ones in the box.

2003 Dodge Ram 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in a 2003 Ram 1500 Regular Cab...Installation was fine, just had to drill new holes like they said. The opening in the rear panels were larger than expected, looked like you could fit a larger round speaker but they installed fine. As for the speakers, they say "stock upgrade", but these sound amazing. Don't know what the next level of kickers sound like(more power range), but as far as sound and clarity goes, crystal. I have them crossed over with my CDX-GT640ui deck and no distortion at all. 17RMS and with a max volume of 50, my ears might bleed above 35. These may be just "stock upgrades" but they sound Great! I would recommend them for an aftermarket HU without an amp, but if you need them to be mind blowingly loud, maybe upgrade to the next level with an amp. I have been a Kicker fan when I was in high school back in the late 80"s and early 90's, and after 20 years, Kicker still gives you quality for a great price! Thank you Kicker and thank you Crutchfield.

Pros: Great sound and very clear. Look great. As most people should know, these are not bass speakers!! Just because it says woofer dosen't mean bass! They are quality MID's

Cons: Haven't found any yet, but have only had them for a week. Maybe, if you measured before purchase, you might be able to fit a larger round. I trusted Crutchfield and they told me 5.25 fits, 6.5 doesn't.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased these for a 1994 Ford Ranger. Power handling is perfect for lower powered amplifiers in head units, which make these great for drop in upgrades to factory speakers. The sound is superior to factory speakers, from the upper frequencies all the way down to the lower ones (keep in mind 5 1/4" 2-ways aren't capable of playing sub bass notes). The speaker's build quality is top notch. Everything from screws, clips, and connectors pre-installed on the speaker wire make installation a breeze. The free mounting adapters from Crutchfield just sweeten the deal!

Pros: Sound Lower power handling for easy factory integration Quality of product

Pros: Nice sound and a great value. Fit nicely in factory locations. No modifications to car.

Cons:

These were smaller than my factory installed, but I didn't realize that until I had the door off... sound excellent but even though they are rated for 50 watts, and my stereo is rated for 50 watts, these distorted badly when I cranked the stereo. I looked online and found that you need to buy Bass Blockers for smaller speakers

Pros: Sound great at low - med volume

Installed in 1998 Buick Regal - front doors, exact fit factory replacement. I'm not sure what the people complaining about lack of bass response were expecting, this is a shallow mount 5.25" speaker - it is NOT a subwoofer. That being said, this speaker does what it is supposed to do: provide good, clean midrange with crisp high end fills. Hard to beat it for the money.

Pros: Great price Shallow mounting depth, great for in-door installations Good sound quality

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are nice speakers which I bought for my 2003 BMW 325i. I got a set of four, my two back deck speakers were blown. I installed the two deck speakers first, and I have noticed that they don't perform nearly as well, bass wise, as the factory woofers in the front doors. I love that they have built in tweeters, but the bass just doesn't seem to be there. I'm not sure I will even install the other two in my front doors as it seems I'd lose all bass.

Pros: Built-in Tweeter.

Cons: Bass is lacking.

Get ready to turn your treble WAY back with these speakers. They have an extremely hot tweeter and boosting the base does little to overcome the 'sizzle' that overwhelms the mid-range. About equal to factory-original speakers but with less full-range sound.

Cons: These speakers can be almost painfully 'hot' at times.

Great dynamic range for a small speaker, where most speakers only give @60-20k Hz range this little 2 way gets down to 45hz adding a nice touch to your bass boost and clarity to boot!

Pros: Needed a replacements for the stock speakers in a 325i Convertible and anyone who has worked with this application knows there is not a lot of room to install anything different with out serious customization. Put these in my silverado 99' regular cab with the wiring harness and door fitment adapter Crutchfield sent free of charge and it fit perfectly. I don't have an aftermarket stereo receiver in yet, but I know it will sound better than they already do. The bass is still distorted slightly when turned past the middle on my oem stereo but it is no where near as distorted as the oem speakers. Once I get the stereo I know my speakers will be crystal clear. I unplugged the factory tweeters because they do not turn on since the speakers come with one. Overall it is a great speaker and am glad I purchased

Pros: Clarity and loud

Cons: distorted bass with factory radio in 99 silverado

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed these in the rear doors of a 2014 Tundra DC, came with the required adapter and a wiring harness. The adapter and cables made the installation very easy. To optimize performance I peeled off the foam seals from the factory speakers so that the new hardware would be properly sealed to the door and the speaker sealed to the adapter. This seems to make a significant difference in the sound quality. The speakers are small so you can't expect big bass, the sound quality is very good and they are much better than the factory speakers. The improvement was very noticeable even with the factory head unit.

Pros: Great sound for the money!

Cons: All these kits would benefit from having new sealing foam in the kits to ensure that the assemblies are sealed like the factory components.

Polypropylene Woofer Cones: The Kicker DS-series speakers feature durable polypropylene woofer cones for their rigidity and light weight. Polypropylene is also resistant to moisture and high temperature extremes found in automotive applications.

Ribbed Polyester Foam Surrounds: The ribbed polyester foam surrounds allow extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL.
