Kicker 40CS54

It's time for an upgrade

Upgrading the old factory speakers in your car will give you a huge bump in sound quality, and Kicker designed CS Series speakers to get your sound system rockin' without breaking the bank. You'll enjoy your music even more when you hear all the details that your muddy-sounding factory speakers couldn't begin to reproduce.

Built tough

Kicker's 40CS54 speaker set provides low-end from a tough 5-1/4" polypropylene woofer, with a polyester foam surround that will stay strong for years to come. The 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter takes care of the vocal and instrumental details that'll really bring your music to life. These speakers sound great powered by a factory radio or an aftermarket car stereo, and they'll really rock when connected to an external amplifier. Grilles are included.

Product Highlights:

  • 2-way 5-1/4" speakers (pair)
  • polypropylene woofer cone with polyester foam surround
  • 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter
  • power range: 2-75 watts RMS (225 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 45-20,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 90 dB
  • top-mount depth: 1-3/4"
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Needed to replace cheap factory speaker on my 2015 Harley Davidson. Can't beleive the difference especially for the price totally impressed.

Pros: Good highs clairity and a little more bass although for a speaker this size its not going to be like a sub. Went from 2 to 4 ohm didn't loose any volume very efficient.

Cons: None.

Bought these to replace the factory front door speakers on my niece's 2010 Chevy Cobalt. The master sheet perfectly explained what I needed to do and I had the job done in about 45 minutes. This made a huge difference in the sound quality! My niece couldn't be happier. Kicker rocks! You won't find better speakers than these for the price.

Pros: Great sound, major upgrade over factory speakers, and affordable!

Cons: None so far. Kicker is amazing!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got the Kicker 40CS54 speakers to go into the roll bar of my 1998 jeep, they installed right into the factory hole with no issues, using the extra adapter connector that came with the speaker. Got them to go with the new Sony CDX-G3100UP radio and Kicker 40CS464 front speakers. They sound great for the price.

Pros: Quick and easy fit into factory speaker location

Cons: The extra connector that came with the speaker, to mate to the factory connector, had too tight a fit on the small speaker terminal, and took a long time and patience to get on the speaker terminal

2000 Buick Regal
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have these installed in a 2000 Buick Regal with the same line 6x9s in the rear. Overall, I'm pretty impressed. Considering their small size they put out decent bass, but far from subwoofers or even their 6x9 cousins. I should actually say they put out a sound that lets you know what the bass line sounds like rather than what it feels like, which is fine with me, The highs don't come off as too bright and the mids are good too.

I should also mention that right now I only have them powered by the stock headunit, which is really why I'm impressed. If they can change my speakers from being the worst I've heard to one of the best being driven by a 16 year-old STOCK head unit, imagine what they can do with an amp! Or even just an aftermarket stereo!

Pros: Very good drop-in replacements. Don't expect God to manifest in audio form, but rather expect a pretty extraordinary improvement.

Cons: None really.

We replaced the blown out speakers in a 2004 Accent GL with 4 of these Kicker speakers and really got our money's worth. They sounded great even with the stock radio but then we paired them with a Sony CDX-GT570UP receiver and got an even better result. Excellent price, fantastic tech support by phone (we had no idea what we were doing but the online instructions and live tech help made it so easy).

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought 4 of these to replace the factory door speakers in my 2004 Toyota Tacoma 4-door pickup. The original speakers were toast and I had replaced the head unit with a decent JVC putting out 20 watts RMS about 2 years ago. These speakers put out really clear highs and mids but little bass. I was not expecting license plate vibrating thumps, but a little depth to the sound was expected despite the size of the speaker cone. I played with the internal EQ settings in the head unit, but at low volume levels it is still rather tinny. I'm upsizing the rear speakers to 6x8's and am considering a powered sub. A powered sub may be the perfect recipe, but these speakers alone, even with the aftermarket head unit, just don't cut it for full sound. All that being said they weren't that much per pair... and required no mods to the door panels to install.

Pros: Clean install, highs, mids

Cons: Sound fullness, bass quality especially at low-mid volume levels.

2003 Jeep Wrangler
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In the jeep the speakers seemed to give a richer sound definition than the old paper factory speakers. The fit was a little different but no modifications were needed using the existing factory speaker covers. I may need to get an amp to get the full potential from these speakers as I did not notice much of a difference when there were turned up loud. I figure it is just the poor quality aftermarket that was put in this jeep. Some day a full stereo mod will go down!

Pros: Fit well. Sound quality was improved.

Cons: Once cranked up they seemed to perform average. May be my stereo unit.

These speakers sound really amazing in my XJ Jeep. With Kenwood radio, 22w rms/speaker, there is very nice sound quality and surprising hear & feel of the bass for such small size. Loudness will go more than safe listening level and still beautifully clear, as long as you don't push the bass EQ level too hard.

Awesome Little Speakers

Written by: Skeptic68 from Speedway, IN on November 13, 2015

The paper speakers in my 1995 Mercury Tracer were blown so I ordered these based on a recommendation from a Crutchfield rep. When I installed the first one I tested it against the paper and I was pretty upset. The highs were tinny, the mids and lows were basically non-existant. I was ready to send them back but I was in a rush so I left it in for my commute.

During the commute I remembered that I had turned the bass and treble all the way down because the paper speakers were so distorted that it made them pop and rattle. Once I turned that back up it was night and day.

I finished putting in the other 3 speakers this morning and I have to say, even on a stock, awful ford head unit from the early 90s with no amp these little speakers rock. I am very happy with them for under 100 bucks.

The mounting tabs included leave a little to be desired and the bracket is plastic but you can't really complain when they're free. They get the job done.

Pros: Low price, Well rounded speaker

Cons: None after I played with the head unit adjustments.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Needed an inexpensive set of speakers to replace the spent OE door speaker in my old SUV. The Kicker speakers fit that description perfectly. Quality materials, solid frame and easy installation. Plus 20.00 off ! a no brainer. Sound is very good quality, not much base but then they are only 5 1/4 speakers. good high frequency dispersion form the tweeter... For a OE replacement, these are hard to beat.

Pros: Cheap, easy fit, look good, sound good

Cons: Bass response fair. Not a "direct" fit for my vehicle, had to drill new mounting holes as the OE flanges were larger

Not very happy with these speakers. I replaced my stock speakers with these. I'm still using my stock radio (8.4" dodge ram system) The highs are tingy and the mids and lows don't exist. I ended up putting my factory speakers back in and it sounds much better.

Pros:

Cons:

Crutchfield response on October 19, 2015 That's a common reaction when replacing car speakers. In the case of these Kicker speakers, they're going to need more power than your factory speakers needed in order to sound their best. They likely won't sound good at all on a factory stereo. You'll either need to add an aftermarket stereo or an amplifier (a small, 4-channel amp can supply twice the power of an aftermarket stereo and three or four times the power of the typical factory radio) or return these and get speakers with a higher sensitivity. Either way, we'll be glad to help - just give us a call.

For Size a Throaty Sound

Written by: BD from Ohio on September 12, 2015

For the size, it has a better sound than the Sony XPlods I had replaced, which would pop on the lows. These tend to hand the bass a little better for their small size and they have a pretty high power handling capability as well.

Speakers were for a Toyota Sequoia. Speakers work fine and sound great as long as the back speakers are on too. Alone they lack any bass at all. Hardest piece was figuring out how to reuse the brackets from the old speakers. It would have been easier if I had new brackets which fitted both speaker and car as the included hardware could never work.

Pros: Fits in car, sound good with back speakers

Cons: Needed to reuse brackets and provide own hardware to connect to bracket. No bass if run without back speakers.

The kicker speakers have always been recognized as a good brand and this is no different. They are small and powerful, but when you turn the volume to almost peak, they start to get scratchy and you need to turn the music back down. However, they were a cheap set of speakers and do what they advertise so I am happy with them.

Pros: Sound Quality Easy Installation Clean Look

Cons: Sound distorted when high volume

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered a pair of these for my 2000 Volvo S40 . I replaced the factory speakers in the rear deck . The factory speakers had lost their surrounds and sounded awful . I replaced the factory head unit with an inexpensive jvc which is too much for these 15 year old speakers . When I hooked in these kickers wow ! The difference was amazing . The tweeters absolutely scream and the woofer delivers a surprising low end . I've ran kicker subwòofers in the past so I am aware of the high quality to value ratio . I'm more than satisfied with this product and would definitely recommend you get these . I'm going to replace my door speakers with this same pair . The install took about 15 minutes . Super easy with equipment included . The Crutchfield staff made ordering a snap and were extremely friendly and gave direct answers to my questions . So in all I would recommend this product as well as Crutchfield . More than satisfied .

The bass response could have been better but I was able to compensate by maxing out the bass setting on the reciever. Otherwise the sound was good and clear. My problem is that after a summer of driving through very bumpy road construction both speakers started to buzz and rattle. One broke after a month and the other went a month later. They are now shot and I need new speakers again.

Installed in 2005 Honda Civic rear deck. That factory speakers had more volume. Disappointed in Kicker.

Pros: Decent highs.

Cons: No bass noticeable. Factory speakers sound way better. Do not buy.

Crutchfield response on April 7, 2015 It's not uncommon for people to report hearing less bass with new speakers. Factory speakers are often made of cheap, flimsy materials. When you replace that with a better quality speaker, it'll need a little more power than the cheap one did to produce the same amount of bass. But the bass (and all of the music, for that matter) that you do hear will be cleaner and more detailed.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to replace old warn out factory speakers for the rear doors in my daughter's 2002 Saturn L series. I did not have any set expectations based on the reviews already posted being across the board but I was very pleasantly surprised. For their size the do actually have decent bass. Their mid and high sections are very well rounded and do not come off as being overly bright. If and when I need to replace any speakers in my 8 year old Civic I just may end up using Kickers after all. I usually went with Kenwood, Sony or JVC (even Clarion and Pioneers) in years past but these were nicely made and look like they will hold up well. Overall, these 5 1/4's are a really nice replacement speakers for a great price.

Pros: Baskets were not too deep and will more than likely work in almost any car door. The materials in the speakers are great for longevity in the harsh "door environment" they will live in too.

Cons: The only negative that comes to mind is the single mounting pattern with virtually all 5 1/4 speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed 4 of these guys into my 2004 Jeep Wrangler about 2 weeks ago and couldn't be more pleased. I had reasonable expectations of what they would be able to do for me and they have matached/surpassed them! These speakers are installed in the stock overhead rollbar mount (two) and in dash-mounted speaker pods (two) purchased from Crutchfield as well. They are all being pushed by a 250W amp- all together they are giving me great sound in a Jeep- which is hard to do! As can be expected, there isn't much in the way of low-end with these guys, but I have an under-seat powered sub that covers that- these guys are doing a great job covering the mids and highs!

Pros: Happy with them! Great mids and highs and they look great to boot!

I installed these speakers on my wife's 2008 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4-door, into the boxes on the roll-bar. Had to use the wiring adapter, along with the bracket that was provided by Crutchfield. Although I could've used a larger speaker in the existing hole, the speakers sound great. Excellent highs and the mids sound great. I've got subwoofers so I've dialed down the bass on the speakers to keep them from distorting. These speakers are powered only by the stock radio, no amp, and they still put out great sound!! I'd buy these again for my wife's jeep any day.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not the absolute best, but for the money you can't beat them. This is my second set. First set were 6 1/2 in my Subaru and now 5 1/4 in my old BMW.

Pros: They fit! They can take a lot of power, decent lows, crisp highs, and they sound good.

Cons: This doesn't really matter if you're putting them in a door, but I wish the grill provided more protection and actually covered the tweeter.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in my 1997 BMW 318i sedan as what i thought would be a small upgrade. I guess i needed to upgrade my head unit / put in an amplifier because these speakers were half as good as the 16 year old factory speakers. They would probably be great but i would not recommend them unless you have a newer car or are willing to replace more than just the front (kick panel) speakers.

Pros: Looked cool and fairly inexpensive

Cons: Sounded scratchy, when bass hit you could just tell something was off. Not crisp sound.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good speakers for the price. Replacing blown factory door speakers in my 2008 altima. A little light on the lows but I was expecting that. Handles the factory head unit fine. I was worried about putting a 4 ohm speaker in there where the factory speakers were 2 ohm but I don't notice much of a volume decrease.

Pros: inexpensive Decent Sound

Put these in an 06 Wrangler. They fit the roll bar pods nicely, but the they don't fit well in the factory grilles and the accompanying grilles don't fit the Jeep rollbar housings. The sound quality is a great improvement over the factory speakers and installation was simple with the Crutchfield sheet and the pigtail adapters.

Pros: Great sound. Easy install. Price.

Cons: Neither the factory grilles, (split one of mine on the first one) nor the Kicker grilles fit for my application.

Installed 4 in a 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Was bummed when I saw I could have gone bigger!

Pros: great sound, work well with Kentwood DPX500BT tuner, could still install 75 watt amp in future.

Cons: Nothing with speaker. Was suprised to see stock front door speakers were 6x9. I could have ordered at least 6" round and probably a nice 6 x9, but I did not see that as an option on Crutchfield fitment database.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There's nothing else to say about Kicker products except they are the best speakers on the market hands down. If you are able to install these speakers you will be amazed with the quality. I have been listening to Kicker products since I was in high school and that was a long time ago. Kicker has been around a long time and they have cornered the market with their quality products. Every vehicle I own I always upgrade with Kicker and I'm always satisfied. If you need an adapter to install these speakers I'm sure Crutchfield has it. I know because I have ordered them on many occasions and Crutchfield always has what I need.

Pros: Best speakers on the market hands down. Crutchfield always has the adapters I need to install them no matter what vehicle I'm installing them in.

Cons: No cons!!!!!!

Chevy Silverado 5 1/4" Back Doors

Written by: Anonymous from Cedar City, UT on March 19, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently installed these in the back doors of my 08 Silverado extended cab. They do not come with brackets, or make any that I know of. I followed some suggestions I found online and used the existing bracket. I simply used a razor knife to cut the paper woofer away from the surround, then a small hand saw to cut through the plastic brackets on the back side. The speaker simply falls away from the frame. These Kickers fit "almost" perfectly into the existing bracket, except for the mounting screw slots which just barely overlap the edge of the bracket. This is easily fixed by placing the speaker where you want to mount it, use a sharpie to mark the edges of the overlap, and then take a sharp knife to cut away those spots and voila, it fits like a gem. Use some small screws to mount the speaker and you're done. These along with the 6 1/2" for the fronts have make a huge improvement in sound quality even without replacing the stock head unit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These sound great! Crisp, clear highs! I didn't expect to hear a lot of bass with them so I wasn't disappointed by that but they do have a little! If you're looking for an overall sound with decent bass look somewhere else. 5 1/4" coax speakers simply don't have the capacity! I'm running these off an alpine head unit for now but I'll eventually add an amp to give them a little more power. For now, they do the job and didn't cost me an arm and a leg! Great value!

Pros: Good sound at a good price!

Cons: None yet!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The car does not offer any opportunity to go bigger as far as fitment, but the selection to choose from balances that out, as I really thought about what type of music I would be plaing the majority of the time, and going with the specifics of each speaker, I made the best choice as all of the music is crystal clear and full of sound from the highs to the lows.

Pros: Simple and easy install

Cons: I had to do the work myself to get to install them.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In an era of "fiscal responsibility" I've been stuck with a 2002 Honda Civic. I've always had great stock stereo speakers. You can imagine my dismay at getting into the Civic and turning the radio on for the first time. It was like it wasn't stereo. So I was helped by a Crutchfield sales rep that told me these would liven things up. When I turned the new radio on with the speakers it was like Dorothy opening up the door for the first time when she landed on OZ, when it went from B&W to color. Tight base, nice sound separation. I am very pleased and would highly recommend especially if you're on a tight budget.

Pros: Great sound separation, tight base

Cons: None

These speakers were barely an improvement over the factory speakers, so given the effort of installation (which was not much), I can't rate them any higher than 2 stars. The moral of the story is that if you are going to go to the trouble of installing new speakers, spend some money and get some good ones.

Pros: Crutchfield made the installation easy, with the included speaker bracket and wiring adapter.

Cons:
