Our take on the Kicker 40CS54

by John Pollard
Kicker

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

It's time for an upgrade

Upgrading the old factory speakers in your car will give you a huge bump in sound quality, and Kicker designed CS Series speakers to get your sound system rockin' without breaking the bank. You'll enjoy your music even more when you hear all the details that your muddy-sounding factory speakers couldn't begin to reproduce.

Built tough

Kicker's 40CS54 speaker set provides low-end from a tough 5-1/4" polypropylene woofer, with a polyester foam surround that will stay strong for years to come. The 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter takes care of the vocal and instrumental details that'll really bring your music to life. These speakers sound great powered by a factory radio or an aftermarket car stereo, and they'll really rock when connected to an external amplifier. Grilles are included.

I install them to replace my factory speakers definitely an upgrade but bass are too weak for me, vocals are definitely clear. I was hoping for a better result. So, good enough for now.

Easy installation and perfect fit.

I installed these in my 2003 Dodge Stratus. Crutchfield made it extremely simple to install the speakers which was awesome. I replaced the stock speakers that were there, which were already pretty good but I just wanted a more trusted brand there. The sound is good.

easy installation good sound

Great Speakers for Rear Soundstage

Written By EROK14R, Renton, WA on Monday, June 30, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed some low profile speakers to fill in the rear sound stage of my Rav4. These fit the bill perfectly. They are affordable, easy to install, and sound surprisingly awesome for the price. They are getting 75w from an Infinity Reference Amp hooked up to a Pioneer deck with 4v preouts. I'm happy.
Pros:
Cheap, easy to install, low profile, sound great for the money.
Cons:
They aren't going to impress any audiophiles.

Clear sound

Written By Andrea, Western New York on Sunday, June 22, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Definite difference in sound quality verses factory Ford Escape speakers. The sound is so much clearer with these Kickers. It won't make any difference if you're looking to improve the base, but that goes for almost all speakers. The main difference is the clearness. I can pick out different instruments much easier with these. Great speakers for the price. Pair them with a sub and the sound will rock.
Pros:
Clear sound

Speakers

Written By Anonymous, Bridgewater, NJ on Tuesday, June 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speaker are low cost and so is the audio. I installed these on a 3008 Honda Civic and it took me no more than 30 minutes to do it. They will provide a way better quality audio than your factory speakers (unless you are driving a luxury car), but the sound is not exactly the best. My wife 2006 X3 with factory speakers have better sound.
Pros:
Price Good quality for the price
Cons:
Is not a top of the line sound quality, is ok but not super.

Used them with a Pioneer radio. Very good speakers. Price to quality ratio is awesome.
Pros:
- Cheap - Great speakers - Good quality
Cons:
- Bass could sound better, however I believe that purchasing a box for the truck would solve this issue.

fit just fine no issues
Pros:
good highs and mid range
Cons:
no bass response sounded almost like just a tweeter, would have sent them right back but did not want to loose the $10 for returning them, I put them in the rear door and still need fronts that are better then stock! I will find it hard to buy speakers again with out hearing them first! I find it hard to believe they had a 4+ rating

Great for the money

Written By Zach, Lafayette, CO on Monday, May 05, 2014

Not the absolute best, but for the money you can't beat them. This is my second set. First set were 6 1/2 in my Subaru and now 5 1/4 in my old BMW.
Pros:
They fit! They can take a lot of power, decent lows, crisp highs, and they sound good.
Cons:
This doesn't really matter if you're putting them in a door, but I wish the grill provided more protection and actually covered the tweeter.

Did not work for my car

Written By Nate H, Chester, VA on Wednesday, April 30, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in my 1997 BMW 318i sedan as what i thought would be a small upgrade. I guess i needed to upgrade my head unit / put in an amplifier because these speakers were half as good as the 16 year old factory speakers. They would probably be great but i would not recommend them unless you have a newer car or are willing to replace more than just the front (kick panel) speakers.
Pros:
Looked cool and fairly inexpensive
Cons:
Sounded scratchy, when bass hit you could just tell something was off. Not crisp sound.

Good speakers for the price. Replacing blown factory door speakers in my 2008 altima. A little light on the lows but I was expecting that. Handles the factory head unit fine. I was worried about putting a 4 ohm speaker in there where the factory speakers were 2 ohm but I don't notice much of a volume decrease.

inexpensive Decent Sound

Put these in an 06 Wrangler. They fit the roll bar pods nicely, but the they don't fit well in the factory grilles and the accompanying grilles don't fit the Jeep rollbar housings. The sound quality is a great improvement over the factory speakers and installation was simple with the Crutchfield sheet and the pigtail adapters.
Pros:
Great sound. Easy install. Price.
Cons:
Neither the factory grilles, (split one of mine on the first one) nor the Kicker grilles fit for my application.

Installed 4 in a 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Was bummed when I saw I could have gone bigger!
Pros:
great sound, work well with Kentwood DPX500BT tuner, could still install 75 watt amp in future.
Cons:
Nothing with speaker. Was suprised to see stock front door speakers were 6x9. I could have ordered at least 6" round and probably a nice 6 x9, but I did not see that as an option on Crutchfield fitment database.

There's nothing else to say about Kicker products except they are the best speakers on the market hands down. If you are able to install these speakers you will be amazed with the quality. I have been listening to Kicker products since I was in high school and that was a long time ago. Kicker has been around a long time and they have cornered the market with their quality products. Every vehicle I own I always upgrade with Kicker and I'm always satisfied. If you need an adapter to install these speakers I'm sure Crutchfield has it. I know because I have ordered them on many occasions and Crutchfield always has what I need.
Pros:

Chevy Silverado 5 1/4" Back Doors

Written By Anonymous, Cedar City, UT on Wednesday, March 19, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently installed these in the back doors of my 08 Silverado extended cab. They do not come with brackets, or make any that I know of. I followed some suggestions I found online and used the existing bracket. I simply used a razor knife to cut the paper woofer away from the surround, then a small hand saw to cut through the plastic brackets on the back side. The speaker simply falls away from the frame. These Kickers fit "almost" perfectly into the existing bracket, except for the mounting screw slots which just barely overlap the edge of the bracket. This is easily fixed by placing the speaker where you want to mount it, use a sharpie to mark the edges of the overlap, and then take a sharp knife to cut away those spots and voila, it fits like a gem. Use some small screws to mount the speaker and you're done. These along with the 6 1/2" for the fronts have make a huge improvement in sound quality even without replacing the stock head unit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These sound great! Crisp, clear highs! I didn't expect to hear a lot of bass with them so I wasn't disappointed by that but they do have a little! If you're looking for an overall sound with decent bass look somewhere else. 5 1/4" coax speakers simply don't have the capacity! I'm running these off an alpine head unit for now but I'll eventually add an amp to give them a little more power. For now, they do the job and didn't cost me an arm and a leg! Great value!
Pros:
Good sound at a good price!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The car does not offer any opportunity to go bigger as far as fitment, but the selection to choose from balances that out, as I really thought about what type of music I would be plaing the majority of the time, and going with the specifics of each speaker, I made the best choice as all of the music is crystal clear and full of sound from the highs to the lows.
Pros:
Simple and easy install
Cons:
I had to do the work myself to get to install them.

Kickers Breath New Life

Written By Sean K, New Lenox, IL on Tuesday, February 04, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In an era of "fiscal responsibility" I've been stuck with a 2002 Honda Civic. I've always had great stock stereo speakers. You can imagine my dismay at getting into the Civic and turning the radio on for the first time. It was like it wasn't stereo. So I was helped by a Crutchfield sales rep that told me these would liven things up. When I turned the new radio on with the speakers it was like Dorothy opening up the door for the first time when she landed on OZ, when it went from B&W to color. Tight base, nice sound separation. I am very pleased and would highly recommend especially if you're on a tight budget.
Pros:
Great sound separation, tight base

These speakers were barely an improvement over the factory speakers, so given the effort of installation (which was not much), I can't rate them any higher than 2 stars. The moral of the story is that if you are going to go to the trouble of installing new speakers, spend some money and get some good ones.
Pros:
Crutchfield made the installation easy, with the included speaker bracket and wiring adapter.

Written By niartseoj, Charlottesville, VA on Monday, January 13, 2014

A solid sounding speaker that is well balanced for size and money. I had them installed in the back of my mercedes 150e at same time that I installed a new stereo. My taste in music ranges from gospel to r&b to heavy metal. I found the range and quality of these speakers to be perfect match. They look nice an don't shout out BRAKE IN MY CAR and steal my expensive stuff.

Pros:
Great range of sound. Don't need super high power system to drive them. Easy and clean installation
Cons:
none that I have found so far

Clear, crisp and tight.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased these to replace a pair of tired MB Quart speakers. The Kickers have a much better sound that will only improve as they break-in. Clear mid-range, crisp high's and a tight low-end. If you are giving these a low rating because you cannot 'hear' the bass perhaps you've hooked them up incorrectly(I have done that a few times) or you have completely unrealistic expectations for a 5.25" speaker - this size will never 'hit' like a sub.
Pros:
Excellent all-around speakers.
Cons:
None that I can think of.

Amazing sound

Written By Anonymous, Denver, Co on Thursday, December 05, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was kind of worried when I purchased these speakers along with the 4x6 kickers. After the install, I was very surpised of the sound quality. I mostly listen to alternative, grunge style and rock. Before purchasing these speakers I was undecided and I was leaning toward Polk Audio and Infinity. I called Crutchfield and spoke with advisor Chad. I told him what speakers I was thinking about buying and he asked what type of music did I listen to, and then recommended the kicker 5.25 and 4x6. These are excellent speakers. I hear things now in my music I did not hear with my factory speakers. My next speaker purchase will be kicker and Crutchfield is where I will buy all of my audio equipment. The advice and customer service can't be beat. And no matter who you talk to everyone seems very willing to help you, Thank you Crutchfield
Pros:
Easy to install, perfect
Cons:
none

Unbelievable Clarity

Written By Gnome, Rochester, IN on Monday, December 02, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very clear and gets very loud but I wish it put more of the lows out. I'm not talking about the rattling bass that my subs put out because it's only 5.25" after all but the bass that the subs don't put out. I was expecting just a little bit more since they are powered by my Kenwood Kiv-BT901HD.
Pros:
High output, Clear mids and highs, Cool appearance
Cons:
Lows are almost non-existent, A lot of distortion over half volume

Have never owned anything from Kicker over the years of building my stereo systems, but I'm highly impressed with the sound! Especially out of a speaker of this price range. Replaced old, blown factory speakers, and paired with a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X597, I'm extremely happy with the sound quality I'm getting now! Love the clearity and bass response from these speakers

Great sound and great price!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My 2003 Rubicon's factory speakers were starting to give up the ghost so I need to replace them. Read a bunch of reviews and these seem to come up as a good option. Have been listening to them for a couple of weeks now and they have been a huge improvement over stock. My seven year old Kenwood deck sounds 100% better and I can now hear music over the drone of the 35" Super Swamper tires.
Pros:
Easy installation. Great sound without needing a lot of power to drive them.
Cons:
None really, although I need to add some bass to my system.

Clear sound in a small speaker. Of course low bass is not expected from this size speaker. These are in front doors paired with pair 40CS684 in rear doors. Pioneer head unit is ample power to drive these very efficient speakers. I will be adding a sub to fill out the bottom end. This should be a good match.
Pros:
efficient, moderate depth, low price, Crutchfield includes 6x8 adapters and wiring harness.
Cons:
Kicker screws and clips don't want to thread into each other.

Outperforms Other Speakers

Written By ADO, Powell, WY on Monday, September 16, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speaker value for the money. This was a Crutchfield recommendation to help me fit a tight space, and the speakers outperform those I ordered for the rear. although they were the same price. They are clear and responsive even at high volumes. I recommend them for anyone looking for a decent speaker at a lower price.
Pros:
Good sound even at higher volumes. Fit into a tight space in the front door. Noticeably better than my (new) rear speakers.
Cons:
Connections at the speaker were suspect but no problems in 2 weeks use so far. Test b4 you put the car back together.

clarity of tweeters and mids

I replaced my factory speakers with the Kicker 40CS54, thinking I would get better sound. I honestly can say that I noticed no difference between the two. I have always used kenwood or pioneer equipment on my stereo upgrades, but these were recommended. I am a little disappointed but not enough to take the time and take them back out and replace them.
Pros:

Cons:

I honestly wasn't expecting much from these as they are a rather cheap replacement for the stock speakers in my jeep, but wow! They are really, really good! The bass is way better than I had ever anticipated (not comparable to having a subwoofer tho) and the sound quality is spectacular. Crutchfield also did a great job getting it to me quickly and having all of the correct mounting brackets and cables.
Pros:
Great sound Great price Bass is good Sound quality is amazing
Cons:
Hard bass kicks can sometimes come out a little warped, but other than that there is nothing bad about them.

Great Valu

Written By Michele C, Longwood, FL on Saturday, August 17, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speaker prices are excellent. They arrived on time and in perfect condition with all the information and extras as promised. However, once installed I was somewhat disappointed in the the lack of mid range frequency output. I was told when I called customer service that I can have some low-end cross overs installed to minimize the over abundant hi range out put. They only cost a couple of bucks. Since I have not upgraded the factory head unit yet in the '09 Jetta Wolfsburg, there is not much power coming from the head unit to drive the speakers so that may also be part of the problem, I'm not sure. I have read reviews though where other people just replaced the speakers and were really happy with the sound. What I do know is it's a pain in the rear to get the door dismantled so I will have to wait until I get a new head unit and see what happens. The stock speakers had much better low end sound, and they were real crap. Although these are very clear, there is no low end coming through at all. I expected a much fuller sound. Not super impressed as factory replacements only.
Pros:
Price
Cons:
Very little Low end

These speakers rock more on the mid and highs, replaced from old Polk speakers. All I had to do and to others as well just turn fading control to more towards rear right and left sides and it all balances out just fine. Just using CD/radio for now 14 watts per channel. I'll add amp in awhile.
Pros:
Louder than old Polk s
Cons:
Had to adjust fade more towards back of car to Pioneer 6by9's.

Not as good as factory

Written By The Man Of Steel, Utah on Saturday, June 29, 2013

Fairly decent clarity on the high end, bass has distortion and rattle at the exact same volume where the stock speaker sounds deep and clear. My truck does have the Bose system stock, and I have replaced the head unit with a Pioneer. The new head unit made the Bose speaker system sound twice as good but one speaker in the front door was completely dead. I chose the Kicker to replace it because of what Kicker said about their own quality. I am an audiophile but you don't have to be one to plainly hear the cheapness compared to the factory Bose. Running the balance from right to left without changing the volume, I hear deep, clear bass on the factory speaker side, and I hear rattly, distorted noise on the Kicker side. I confirmed the Kicker is not defective. That is just the way it sounds when given a little volume from a head unit with no amplifier. I'm going to try a brand I have already known to sound good in the past, like Alpine or MTX. Kicker is outta there.
Pros:
Fit my vehicle.
Cons:
Crappy sound.
