Our take on the Kicker 40CS654

by John Pollard
Kicker

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

It's time for an upgrade

Upgrading the old factory speakers in your car will give you a huge bump in sound quality, and Kicker designed CS Series speakers to get your sound system rockin' without breaking the bank. You'll enjoy your music even more when you hear all the details that your muddy-sounding factory speakers couldn't begin to reproduce.

Built tough

Kicker's 40CS654 speaker set provides low-end from a tough 6-1/2" polypropylene woofer, with a polyester foam surround that will stay strong for years to come. The 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter takes care of the vocal and instrumental details that'll really bring your music to life. These speakers sound great powered by a factory radio or an aftermarket car stereo, and they'll really rock when connected to an external amplifier. Grilles are included.

Features

Polypropylene Woofer Cones: The Kicker CS-series speakers feature durable polypropylene woofer cones, resistant to moisture and temperature extremes found in automotive applications.

Ribbed Polyester Foam Surrounds: The ribbed polyester foam surrounds allow extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL.

1/2" PEI Balanced-dome Tweeters: The 1/2" PEI (polyetherimide) balanced-dome tweeters provide a smooth high frequency response with quick, detailed and spatially-correct imaging. The tweeters have strong neodymium magnets for higher power handling.

Mounting: In addition to fitting standard 6-1/2 and 4-hole 6-1/2 applications, the CS65 also has a standard 6-3/4 bolt pattern. However, if mounted in a 6-3/4 location the holes for the smaller pattern create an air leak, which must be sealed using a speaker baffle, or something similar.

Awesome speakers so far, about 2 weeks of use. Major upgrade from Toyotas foam speakers! It's Kicker, even their "low end" speakers are going to sound great
Pros:
Can handle the heaviest of metal music! Price was in my range, and no sacrifice in quality either.

Major upgrade

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put these in the front doors. Really nice upgrade from the crap stock. They have the best max handling of anything under $100 and really most similar door speakers were closer to $300. I liked them so much that I ordered another pair for the back doors. WOW. Now that made a MAJOR difference for less than $200. Pretty kickass. And I haven't even put a new deck in yet which should power them much better. Awesome upgrade. My friend who does tons of installs recommended them and he was 100% on point.
Pros:
Sound great. Affordable

2001 BMW 325i 4 Door Front and Rear E-46

Written By BennyR, Denver, CO on Monday, July 07, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to install in my daughter's BMW 325i after discovering that the foam surrounds on all 4 of her original woofers had disintegrated from old age! When putting my ear right up to the four factory tweeters and the two factory midranges, they all sounded fine. So off I went to find a cheap alternative to BMW's (inferior, yet more expensive) replacement woofers. After visiting my local "Quality Auto Sound" and "Car Toys" I was disgusted that both stores insisted I needed to replace the factory head unit and the factory amp because I would never be able to get a perfect match and that they were probably "STARTING TO GO" anyway! NONSENSE! After consulting with Crutchfield about more expensive models from Polk, Infinity and Alpine, their adviser actually recommended these cheaper Kickers since their bass output was relatively strong and our factory stereo wouldn't be sending any signal to their tweeters anyway. The factory stereo only sends bass frequencies to the woofers, so they would blend right in with the four factory tweeters and the two factory midrange drivers! I installed the rear pair VERY easily! Very straightforward and took less than an hour, even with the slow pace and the many breaks my old, fat body demands! The front pair took about two and a half hours, partially because the screws they included were about an eighth of an inch too short and it took me awhile to figure that out. But then it was an easy $2.50 fix at the local hardware store!
Pros:
Although the 5.25" speakers would have been easier to fit into the front doors, I'm so glad I got the larger 6.5" for the front! The system as a whole sounds so balanced and well worth the relatively easy installation work required!
Cons:
I probably would have shaved an hour off my installation on the front speakers if I would have realized sooner that the screws that were included for the front speakers were just a touch too short. An easy fix since I took the whole door panel in to the hardware store and it took about 2 minutes for the guy to find the perfect match! Six metric machine screws later and I was done!

Good, but could be better

Written By B.J, Greenville, SC on Sunday, July 06, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are extremely clear, to the point where you can definitely tell if your audio source isn't high enough quality. Pandora sounds noticeably worse than music that I've put on a USB stick because you can hear the difference in the bitrate. For best results, stick with a USB stick full of audio files.

Unfortunately, they're almost unusable with how sharp the high end is. Even with the treble turned way down, there are still songs that are physically painful to listen to at high volume. Despite how good it is over all, I'll probably not get another pair for the rear speakers in my car, simply because I don't think I could handle more treble.
Pros:
Crisp, clear sound. Lots of power. Decent Bass.
Cons:
Painful amounts of treble. Will require lots of tuning to balance the system.

Perfect front door speakers for a 1999 Silverado. Mated with Sony MEX-GS610BT. Incredible clear, powerful sound.
Pros:
15 minute install per door. Must drill four holes for adaptor, but mounts solid. Used old strip foam from original speaker outside diameter to install between adaptor mont and door sheet metal to eliminate any potential vibration issues down the road. May not be necessary, but I look ahead.
Cons:
None.

Perfect stock replacement, true plug-n-play. I've got a 98 zj limited 5.9. If you have one of these, these are a perfect fit. They include the wiring harness and the door adapters. Making the install a snap, and they rock. If you have the stock Infinity Gold system, these are best replacement for the money.
Pros:
Good bass, med and highs. Easy installation, four speaker took me an hour.
Cons:

Replaced blown out factory speakers in front door of 02 silverado. These fit perfect with the supplied adapters.they sound great with factory radio. Crutchfield made it easy and shipped fast.
Pros:
Seem well made. Of course they're imports but still well made. Sound good. Fit perfect.
Cons:
None really, they do say designed and engineered in USA but they are not MADE in usa, so a little mis-leading.

Nice product

Written By DaveP, New Jersey on Tuesday, June 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speakers sound impressive for being powered by stock HU. I got the scratch&dent option, and one of the speakers had a slightly dented cone, and the outer foam ring had a significant tear/hole. Also, one of the adapter mtg brackets had a tab broken off. Unfortunately, my impatience got the best of me and I attempted to re-seal the speaker with glue instead of return it, which only shriveled the foam in that area. Surprisingly, the speakers still sound very good. Clarity of mids and highs are impressive, bass is a big improvement from stock but not the smoothest.

Bottom line- excellent product, sounds great with stock HU. But, definitely worth it to pay the extra $10 for brand new vs scratch&dent. Would definitely recommend as an affordable way to compliment a woofer in the trunk!
Pros:
Decent mids and crisssp treble (might even be too much for some, but a pro for me!)
Cons:
Inconsistent bass response, but I'm not running these with an amp. Also, "scratch & dent" was more like "ripped and dent." With a broken mounting bracket as well, I think a little more quality control is needed. However, I am thoroughly impressed by the wealth of knowledge provided on the Crutchfield site, the ease/speed of ordering, and the fact that they include brackets and adapters in the first place!

Great Audio Quality

Written By Chris L., Tulare, CA on Saturday, June 07, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sounding speakers and big improvement from OEM speakers. These speakers have enough bass that I don't need an amp or sub. For those who say they have poor sound and no bass then you must have no equalizer or have a OEM receiver. I replaced mine with a Pioneer receiver and paired with these speakers and the sound quality is awesome. And that's only with the front speakers in my Nissan Versa hatchback. Will be replacing my rear speakers soon which will sound even better
Pros:
Great sound, worth the money, big improvement from OEM speakers
Cons:
Little tricky to install if you need the adapter and splice wiring

Big Difference

Written By KDizzle, Land O'Lakes, FL on Wednesday, June 04, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have only installed the rear speakers but so far they sound great, much better than the factory ones. I was horrified at the super-cheap paper speakers I pulled out of my Civic. I can now at least hear some bass coming out. I ran into a small problem during installation as the screwholes in the brackets that Crutchfield sent did not quite line up with the factory holes and it was a real pain to get them screwed in at an angle, even after the holes were drilled out some. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the doors will go smoother!
Pros:
Nice bass response without being too "muddy" sounding. Clear highs and mids. Much better than factory at a very reasonable price.
Cons:
None so far!

The speaker are low cost and so is the audio. I installed these on a 3008 Honda Civic and it took me no more than 30 minutes to do it. They will provide a way better quality audio than your factory speakers (unless you are driving a luxury car), but the sound is not exactly the best. My wife 2006 X3 with factory speakers have better sound.
Pros:
Price Price Price For the money the sound is not bad
Cons:
If you expect really quality audio, this is not for you.

I just replaced all 4 stock speakers in my 98 Cherokee with these and I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. They were easy to install, it took me no more than 30-45 minutes. The audio is fantastic for low cost speakers, good highs, and mids, and no lack of bass what so ever. I would say if you're looking to get good speakers but don't want to spend hundreds of $$$ on them, these are a great choice.
Pros:
low cost, easy install, great audio quality.

Amazing Audio Upgrade!

Written By JoshuaW, Broomfield, CO on Thursday, May 22, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are just starting to get broke in and are really settling in to producing great sound. The balance between high mid and low is great especially for speakers in this price range. They were definitely an upgrade over the stock speakers in my 2014 Subaru Impreza. They handle everything the stock deck can dish out and keep asking for more. They produce enough bass that I'm considering a Dynamat door kick now. The stock sound dampening does a decent job and my Boom Mat speaker forms keep the metal from vibrating, but they bump enough to get the door panels to vibrate. The highs are a little harsh out of the box, but now that they've had time to break in everything has evened out beautifully. I listen to a very wide variety of music from rap, metal, pop-rock, electronica, classical, jazz, motown, etc. I have yet to find a genre/style that these speakers don't do justice to. I especially enjoy them when listening to classical or electronica as these music styles tend to have a much fuller sound to them. When listening to either of these styles you are enveloped in sound with these speakers. I highly recommend them!
Pros:
See the review.
Cons:
My only qualm was with the mounting screws. The threads on a few of them collapsed instead of grabbing the metal in my car door. So, they're a little on the cheap side. Luckily I had some higher quality metal screws in my tool box, but you may want to consider going to the hardware store for some screws with a higher hardness rating.

Very easy to install, just unscrew old speaker and wire it up with the included wire harness, plug it in and you are all set. These speakers were an upgrade to my stock ford speakers in my '89 F250, and I can say these are a massive upgrade from them. They are very crisp and can get very loud before distorting. I have these paired with a kicker 10 inch woofer and have a great blend of highs to lows and great mids.
Pros:
Crisp sound. Easy install. Good mids and highs. Included wire clips
Cons:
Can distort and get a little muddy at very high volume.

Decent Upgrade from Stock

Written By Anonymous, Frankfort, IL on Friday, April 25, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a good replacement for my aged stock speakers with clearer highs and a little bit of punch. I called crutchfield and actually asked which ones were really recommended and these were. After they were installed I was pleased with the difference in sound compared to the stock speakers. Much more full sounding, clear highs, and a little more punch.
Pros:
- Clear highs - Distortion less apparent at higher volume levels - Nice grille - Different mounting holes
Cons:
- Little lack of bass from these, but I wasn't expecting much, I have subwoofers for that.

Awesome Replacement for Factory Speakers

Written By RussellK, Burnet, TX on Thursday, April 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Used these speakers to replace the 4 door speakers in a 2001 Chevy Tahoe (non-Bose, with factory sub). The front speakers fit like a glove using the supplied brackets and wire harness. The rear speakers fit even better, as they didn't require the supplied bracket, and mounted directly to the factory holes.
Pros:
Easy install, and factory upgrade with great sound!
Cons:
None to date...

Clears vocals but with a treat of bass

Written By Carl, Indiana on Thursday, April 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was quite undecided. I was torn between the JLs and the Polk 6.5s. I kept calling and calling and reviewing. I heard that the sound is great but everyone was complaining about the bass. So I decided to give these kickers a try seeming from reviews and Crutchfield that the bass wasn't muddy or lack there of. I can tell you I'm extremely happy with my decision. I'm not saying these will pound but I'm sure this will satisfy both sides of the spectrum. I put these inside a 2010 honda fit sport.
Pros:
Bass Clear sound at high levels Cheap in price
Cons:
None found yet.

Just Fine 6.5 Speakers

Written By ianlucky, Denver, CO on Wednesday, April 23, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers sound just fine. Though just 6.5 inches they have some decent punch. The highs are plenty sufficient... more than enough, that you may have to put your treble setting to flat.
Pros:
Super crisp highs... Some adequate low punch... variable mounting holes...
Cons:
none really

Quality at an affordable price

Written By Marc B, Omaha NE on Monday, April 21, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Obviously speaker quality is in the ear of the beholder and dependent on the type of music they listen to. My musical tastes vary but classic rock is my main driving music so I was looking for something with decent bass but clean mids and highs. After spending a day at multiple retailers listening to countless speakers, I kept coming back to these Kickers. Even compared to other pairs that were priced up to $200 (my max budget), these had the sound my ears were pleased with. The bass isn't muffled like others and I can hear the hi-hat and guitar riffs very clearly. I replaced all 4 speakers in my Honda CRV with these (and a new head unit) and I'm amazed by the overall quality.
Pros:
Clean bass without the muffled vibrations. Great price for quality.
Cons:
None

I installed these speakers in the rear doors of my 2011 Silverado crew cab. Wow! What a difference even with the OEM head unit. I could actually hear my music at a much lower volume compared to the garbled stock speakers. A much needed improvement.
Pros:
Easy, cost effective upgrade over the stock speakers.
Cons:

Not that impressive replacements for a Chevy HHR. They definitely give you more treble but the bass response is thumpy and not solid or deep. Too boomy on the verge of distortion.
Pros:
Gives more treble
Cons:
Poor bass, not impressive

Added 4 of these to replace stock speakers in my 2014 Jeep Wrangler unlimited. (non-Alpine unit) Very clear sounding with no distortion. Great speaker for the price. I also added the SO B-8PTD power sub. This brought in the extra bass and a solid punch to the stock head unit. Great set-up for a low cost.
Pros:
Clear sounding no distortion fits perfect with included brackets
Cons:
None

These easily fit in the rear doors of my 04 Ram Quad cab. All i had to do was get some drywall screws, hook up the wires, and that's basically it. Anything is better than OEM garbage.
Pros:
Decent sound for the price, fit like Crutchfield said the would.
Cons:
Not best 6 1/2" speaker I have ever heard, but not the worst, and not bad when having to worry about size & depth of the speaker

Great speakers!

Written By Aron S, Pa on Tuesday, April 08, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are very good! They are crisp on the highs, mids and lows. I upgraded my speakers on my 2006 Honda crv. These are 1 inch bigger than my old ones, but still fit perfectly. The grills look awesome, but I could not use them because then get covered by my door panels. I would recommend to a anyone who askes. The only drawback is that certain types of music (mainly metal) don't reproduce the fast bass drum sounds very good.
Pros:
Great sound. Nice look.

Solid factory replacement option

Written By BobW, St Paul, MN on Monday, April 07, 2014

These are a good and affordable choice for a factory replacement speaker in many systems. Mine is a 2011 Buick Regal, and while the Advisor said they were nor recommended. That is based in degree of difficulty in mounting, IMO, and not compatibility. I am a little surprised at the reviews that talk about how much bass these speakers provide. I really am not getting much increased base over factory, but it is a little cleaner bass, and the tweeter brightens things up over the paper cones by quite a bit. Overall a good and affordable option for factory replacement.
Pros:
Fair price Decent sound Conventional mounting size
Cons:
Not as much base as advertised

Written By Nick, Chicago on Saturday, April 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got these to replace my front speakers in my 2005 Honda Accord. They are way better than the factory speakers and so much more bass. The installation wasn't bad but Crutchfield didn't send a second set of screws on accident. Besides that the installation was a breeze and the speakers sound great. The only problem is they don't sound too well on very high volume but I assume it's either the factory amp or the speakers need to be broken in.
Pros:
Clean sound Good bass Easy install
Cons:
Bass isn't as good at really high volume (might need a better amp)

Better than stock BOSE

Written By Adam, Louisville, CO on Saturday, April 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Don't know much about speakers so don't know how this would stack up against other options - With that said, these speakers work great for me and are definitely a step above my 6.5" Bose speakers that came stock in my Acura. Would definitely recommend to anyone. Once again, I should probably give these 5 stars but w/out being the stereo affection-ado I simply can't say how they stack up against the competition.
Pros:
Look good, great price and performance and uber simple install
Cons:
None

Replacement speakers

Written By John, Honolulu, HI on Thursday, April 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to purchase Alpine or Polk speakers as replacement for the stock JBL factory system in my 2007 Toyota Tacoma. Unfortunately, both of my preferred brands had nothing in stock. The salesperson for Crutchfield recommended these Kicker speakers as an alternative. It seemed like a good enough deal and items were processed and shipped timely. The downside is that these speakers have very little bass response based on the salespersons description. A little disappointed by this.
Pros:
Decent price
Cons:
Weak on the bass response, fitment was only marginally off alignment with the install bracket. The wiring plug kit was very difficult to attach to speakers male leads.
