Our take on the Kicker 40CS654

by John Pollard
Kicker

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

It's time for an upgrade

Upgrading the old factory speakers in your car will give you a huge bump in sound quality, and Kicker designed CS Series speakers to get your sound system rockin' without breaking the bank. You'll enjoy your music even more when you hear all the details that your muddy-sounding factory speakers couldn't begin to reproduce.

Built tough

Kicker's 40CS654 speaker set provides low-end from a tough 6-1/2" polypropylene woofer, with a polyester foam surround that will stay strong for years to come. The 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter takes care of the vocal and instrumental details that'll really bring your music to life. These speakers sound great powered by a factory radio or an aftermarket car stereo, and they'll really rock when connected to an external amplifier. Grilles are included.

Features

Polypropylene Woofer Cones: The Kicker CS-series speakers feature durable polypropylene woofer cones, resistant to moisture and temperature extremes found in automotive applications.

Ribbed Polyester Foam Surrounds: The ribbed polyester foam surrounds allow extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL.

1/2" PEI Balanced-dome Tweeters: The 1/2" PEI (polyetherimide) balanced-dome tweeters provide a smooth high frequency response with quick, detailed and spatially-correct imaging. The tweeters have strong neodymium magnets for higher power handling.

Mounting: In addition to fitting standard 6-1/2 and 4-hole 6-1/2 applications, the CS65 also has a standard 6-3/4 bolt pattern. However, if mounted in a 6-3/4 location the holes for the smaller pattern create an air leak, which must be sealed using a speaker baffle, or something similar.

Add some power and these rock!

Written By Lonnie, Fayetteville, AR on Tuesday, October 21, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these as a replacement for the factory speakers. At first they did sound a little "tinny". Not much bass. After a month of break in they really started to sound good. I got some foam speaker baffles and that made a world of difference. The bass really came alive. Recently I got two more for the rear doors and went old school and bought a 200 watt 7 band EQ. These speakers really come to life with some extra juice powering them. I had just the factory head unit before. Now they will hurt your ears. I am amazed at how much power they can handle. And how good the sound and clarity is. Totally happy with these purchases!

Keep in mind these speakers need a break in period. The do sound better as time goes along. And I would recommend using the foam baffles. I got the boom mats. They really help with the bass. And if you can put some power to them, like an amp or amplified EQ. Its the only way to do these speakers justice.
Pros:
Great sound for a great price.
Cons:
None.

Super Nice

Written By JJ5484, Fort Collins, CO on Monday, October 06, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I picked up a beater 99 Durango from a lady at work -- quickly realized that it was a cremepuff. Invested some money into it (super low miles). After going through the car I fixed nearly everything, leaving the blown speakers as my last project. I was looking for a good sound at a reasonable cost. These puppies did the trick. Easy replacement (you have to use the factory spacers on the front door but not the back) to the factory Infinity 6 speakers that came with the car. Just replaced the 4 in the doors, leaving the infinity tweeters alone (FYI -- the tweeters were not working so taking the panel off I notice that the solder had failed on the black wire -- a quick fix and we were back in business on the high end). I also have retained the head end unit -- which, if I decide to keep the car, will be replaced. Back to the speakers, in short, I did a before and after comparison with different songs -- U2's "Beautiful Day", Cold Play's "Clocks", a guitar instrumental, and a bit of Eminem to check out the range. While not perfect, they were more than a slight upgrade to the factories that were in there. Further, the Kicker product line will easily allow me to match up an Amp and Sub if I decide to go that direction. Super replacements. For the money, these are about the best you are going to find.
Pros:
Sound great right out of the box. Strong range and excellent clarity. Flexible enough to allow me to add an AMP and Sub in the future without further investment in the speakers.
Cons:
None at this time.

These are overall good speakers for the money. I just installed a sub and thought that these might get overpowered while not hooked up to an amp, but they still hold their own! Once they get broken in, they are much clearer than my stock speakers.

kicker cs 6.5's

Written By D, Granville ny on Thursday, September 25, 2014

If you want real sound from these you need to put in an aftermarket deck with 3 track eq. they need proper break-in. For 70$ they will sound good. You just have to push them with quality audio. And 6.5 woofers will not bump rack city, you're an idiot if you expect bass from a 2 way speaker
Pros:
Great sound for the price. Instal is easy with proper equipment knowledge and brackets
Cons:
They aren't idiot proof.

Great product, the sound difference on my accourd 2012 LX is Day and Night. I still have stock unit, but buying on Crutchfield is a no-brainier, those guys really know what they are doing; and I will be honest, you may save a few pennies elsewhere online but its not worth it! I installed myself (with the instructions provided by them) and it was great, so easy, it makes you even feel like you are an expert LOL. Definitely, Crutchfield got a new customer with me; extremely and highly recommended if you want honest people who cares about the customer first .

Pros:
A much better sound than stock!
Cons:
So far none

2011 Honda Civic SI - Poor Performance

Written By JustRick, Dothan, AL on Thursday, September 11, 2014

I purchased these to replace the rear speakers in a 2011 Honda Civic SI which had the factory speakers and radio. I called tech support and chatted with product advice before placing the order and informed them that I wanted to add some bass to the unit, which currently has very little. At the tech's suggestion, I purchased these Kickers and installed with customization to the supplied adapter. Unfortunately, what little bass I did have in the two rear speakers are now gone. The overall sound is very low and weak. With the radio fader focused solely on the rear speakers they're just not producing quality sound. I didn't expect to rattle the windows or wake the neighbors but I did expect them to outperform the factory paper cone speakers. Granted there are many factors involved, car, head unit, etc. but that's why I called before purchasing, to get an opinion on what would work well for my car.
Pros:
None at the moment
Cons:
No bass, weak or low sound. Doesn't out perform factory speakers. Speaker adapters needed modifying and factory grilles no longer fit.

Kicker Speakers are Awsome

Written By GeorgeS, Barrigada, GU on Monday, September 01, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers really made a difference, when I replaced the factory speakers in my 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, sound bar.
Pros:
The clarity was noticeable right away, even from the weaker output of my existing factory radio. I've heard the highs that were non-existent or muffled, when the factory speakers were in the sound bar.
Cons:
Was not able to get a mounting bracket for my speakers so I had to use the existing bracket from the old factory speakers. Basically, I just removed the old speakers from their mounting frame and just placed the new Kicker speakers in and completed the install. You'll have to destroy your old paper cone speakers in order to get the mounting frame you need.

Great speaker upgrade.

Written By GStrobe31, Miami, FL on Wednesday, August 20, 2014

I bought these speakers as a factory speaker replacement in my 2009 Honda Civic Sedan LX.

Sound:

These speakers are much better than the factory speakers. They are very sharp at first but it just has to break in (Tip: do not reduce your treble to remove the sharp sounds, it needs to play sharp for a while for it to die down). These speakers are not at their full potential with the factory head unit. You will need to power them much more to see their true colors. I highly recommend to get a aftermarket head unit or even an amp, if you can, to power these speakers. Many people are wondering about the bass, well this speakers again with a factory head unit will not be able to produce much bass. It can produce very decent, different, good bass notes. I currently play high quality songs with an equalizer app on my android phone to push the speakers more. With this combo I can make my doors shake and rattle very easily. Still it won't give enough bass to make the other cars next to you hear it, that's what subwoofers are for.

Installation: If your not mechanically savvy with your vehicle leave it to the professionals.

For 8th gen civic owners: the MasterSheet does not clearly state how to remove the door easily. There are screws they didn't mention that I had to take out. Also the locking mechanism of the doors are fragile and again the MasterSheet does not say how to disconnect them. I found out how through trial and error.
Pros:
Much better than stock speakers. Everything sounds much better
Cons:
Very sharp in break in period It needs more power to bring out it's full potential.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good speakers for the price. A definite plus is that Crutchfield included the mounting brackets and the wiring harness free. Now I just need to upgrade my head unit to push some real power to these things.
Pros:
Price. Power rating
Cons:
None

Cheap but sound good

MUCH better than my oem ones, but they're in the rear doors and running off the factory head, so i can't use them to their full potential. . i have NO doubt that hooked up to an amp or used in the front - they would really rock.

again, great speakers, and you can't beat 'em for the price. def recommended.

Definite upgrade!

Written By DB, Texas on Friday, August 08, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 2014 Jeep Wrangler. I wanted to upgrade the sound and still stay as stock as possible. I asked an advisor for suggestions. Shane recommended four of the Kickers to replace stock speakers in the dash and roll bar. The speakers were fairly easy to change out. The only problem was the adapter ring doesn't quite match up, both in the roll bar and the dash. The longest of the three arms requires trimming and the screw hole requires extending inward, but not a big deal. The supplied wiring adapter is idiot-proof. I found that you really don't need to take the dash as apart as the instructions guide. I took the side panel off, and a couple of the screws in the knee panel, and I had enough room to get the speakers in and out without taking the other parts out. The speakers went in fairly smoothly. The volume and quality of sound over the stock speakers is nice. Crutchfield always has been, and hopefully will continue to be great. Great recommendation Shane. Very pleased with the result.
Pros:
Volume and quality difference in the sound.
Cons:
Adapter bracket requires some mods.

Outstanding Stock Upgrade!

Written By Shane, Layton, UT on Friday, August 01, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently upgraded the sound system in my wife's Dodge Ram Quad Cab. I purchased these 6.5's along with the matching 6x9 Kicker CS component system to provide mid-range and mid-bass to compensate for the two Fosgate 12's and dedicated amp that rounded out the system. The result was a great sounding truck and a very happy wife. I like how the Kickers lit up the sound stage and brought a level of clarity that I could only try to convince my wife actually existed. The construction of the Kicker units is solid and the sound is outstanding, especially for my budget build. As a "backyard" installer for many years, I've been privileged to work with some much higher end equipment. Bang for buck, these Kickers rival several systems costing considerably more. With a little EQ and crossover tweaking, and a little break in time, I've got the system far exceeding my expectations. Add the little adapters that Crutchfield throws in and presto, you couldn't ask for an easier install and an incomparable difference to the improvement of sound. Don't think I could ask for a better sounding stock speaker replacement at this price.
Pros:
Good quality construction, great rear fill sound with a little tweaking, and a price that makes these quite the bargain.
Cons:
Considering price, and expectations...no real cons. They're not a component set, and should not be compared as such...they sound pretty darn good for a set of coaxial 6.5's mounted in rear doors.

Excellent!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speaker overall! For just $35 each, produces great sound. I recently had factory Chrysler speakers and well, they sucked. The right front door speaker was blown and needed to be replaced. Only problem I had with this product was making the bracket work with the factory thing next to the door. (Not sure what it's called) Had to make a few modifications but not to major. Only reason why this gets 4 stars. Comparing sound quality, great bass for the price as well as treble. 5 stars for sound and 4 for assembly.
Pros:
Bass Treble RMS Value is great
Cons:
Installation was quite tricky if you don't have a clever mind ;) didn't even bother with the manual.

Still waiting for better sound...

After replacing a pair of Infinity Primus speakers that did not work in 2014 Honda CRV no matter what the research shows (needs to be all 4 speakers-2 cause the head to go into protection mode) I am just now starting to hear some bottom end..they have been used about an hour a day for 2 weeks. I realize there is a break in period and am hoping they surpass the pretty crappy stock speakers.
Pros:
Nothing concrete yet. Decent price, I guess (that is if they improve)
Cons:
Break in time seems to take forever. Still not as good as what Honda equipped the car with but am hopeful

Awesome speakers so far, about 2 weeks of use. Major upgrade from Toyotas foam speakers! It's Kicker, even their "low end" speakers are going to sound great
Pros:
Can handle the heaviest of metal music! Price was in my range, and no sacrifice in quality either.
Cons:
None
