Our take on the Kicker 40CS654

by John Pollard
Kicker

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

It's time for an upgrade

Upgrading the old factory speakers in your car will give you a huge bump in sound quality, and Kicker designed CS Series speakers to get your sound system rockin' without breaking the bank. You'll enjoy your music even more when you hear all the details that your muddy-sounding factory speakers couldn't begin to reproduce.

Built tough

Kicker's 40CS654 speaker set provides low-end from a tough 6-1/2" polypropylene woofer, with a polyester foam surround that will stay strong for years to come. The 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter takes care of the vocal and instrumental details that'll really bring your music to life. These speakers sound great powered by a factory radio or an aftermarket car stereo, and they'll really rock when connected to an external amplifier. Grilles are included.

Highlights:

  • 2-way 6-1/2" speakers (pair)
  • polypropylene woofer cone with polyester foam surround
  • 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter
  • power range: 2-100 watts RMS (300 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 40-20,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 90 dB
  • top-mount depth: 1-13/16"
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Features

Polypropylene Woofer Cones: The Kicker CS-series speakers feature durable polypropylene woofer cones, resistant to moisture and temperature extremes found in automotive applications.

Ribbed Polyester Foam Surrounds: The ribbed polyester foam surrounds allow extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL.

1/2" PEI Balanced-dome Tweeters: The 1/2" PEI (polyetherimide) balanced-dome tweeters provide a smooth high frequency response with quick, detailed and spatially-correct imaging. The tweeters have strong neodymium magnets for higher power handling.

Mounting: In addition to fitting standard 6-1/2 and 4-hole 6-1/2 applications, the CS65 also has a standard 6-3/4 bolt pattern. However, if mounted in a 6-3/4 location the holes for the smaller pattern create an air leak, which must be sealed using a speaker baffle, or something similar.

Great speaker for the money!

Added 4 of these to replace stock speakers in my 2014 Jeep Wrangler unlimited. (non-Alpine unit) Very clear sounding with no distortion. Great speaker for the price. I also added the SO B-8PTD power sub. This brought in the extra bass and a solid punch to the stock head unit. Great set-up for a low cost.
Pros:
Clear sounding no distortion fits perfect with included brackets
Cons:
None

Yep, as advertised, a solid choice

These easily fit in the rear doors of my 04 Ram Quad cab. All i had to do was get some drywall screws, hook up the wires, and that's basically it. Anything is better than OEM garbage.
Pros:
Decent sound for the price, fit like Crutchfield said the would.
Cons:
Not best 6 1/2" speaker I have ever heard, but not the worst, and not bad when having to worry about size & depth of the speaker

Great speakers!

Written By Aron S, Pa on Tuesday, April 08, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are very good! They are crisp on the highs, mids and lows. I upgraded my speakers on my 2006 Honda crv. These are 1 inch bigger than my old ones, but still fit perfectly. The grills look awesome, but I could not use them because then get covered by my door panels. I would recommend to a anyone who askes. The only drawback is that certain types of music (mainly metal) don't reproduce the fast bass drum sounds very good.
Pros:
Great sound. Nice look.

Solid factory replacement option

Written By BobW, St Paul, MN on Monday, April 07, 2014

These are a good and affordable choice for a factory replacement speaker in many systems. Mine is a 2011 Buick Regal, and while the Advisor said they were nor recommended. That is based in degree of difficulty in mounting, IMO, and not compatibility. I am a little surprised at the reviews that talk about how much bass these speakers provide. I really am not getting much increased base over factory, but it is a little cleaner bass, and the tweeter brightens things up over the paper cones by quite a bit. Overall a good and affordable option for factory replacement.
Pros:
Fair price Decent sound Conventional mounting size
Cons:
Not as much base as advertised

Written By Nick, Chicago on Saturday, April 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got these to replace my front speakers in my 2005 Honda Accord. They are way better than the factory speakers and so much more bass. The installation wasn't bad but Crutchfield didn't send a second set of screws on accident. Besides that the installation was a breeze and the speakers sound great. The only problem is they don't sound too well on very high volume but I assume it's either the factory amp or the speakers need to be broken in.
Pros:
Clean sound Good bass Easy install
Cons:
Bass isn't as good at really high volume (might need a better amp)

Better than stock BOSE

Written By Adam, Louisville, CO on Saturday, April 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Don't know much about speakers so don't know how this would stack up against other options - With that said, these speakers work great for me and are definitely a step above my 6.5" Bose speakers that came stock in my Acura. Would definitely recommend to anyone. Once again, I should probably give these 5 stars but w/out being the stereo affection-ado I simply can't say how they stack up against the competition.
Pros:
Look good, great price and performance and uber simple install
Cons:
None

Replacement speakers

Written By John, Honolulu, HI on Thursday, April 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to purchase Alpine or Polk speakers as replacement for the stock JBL factory system in my 2007 Toyota Tacoma. Unfortunately, both of my preferred brands had nothing in stock. The salesperson for Crutchfield recommended these Kicker speakers as an alternative. It seemed like a good enough deal and items were processed and shipped timely. The downside is that these speakers have very little bass response based on the salespersons description. A little disappointed by this.
Pros:
Decent price
Cons:
Weak on the bass response, fitment was only marginally off alignment with the install bracket. The wiring plug kit was very difficult to attach to speakers male leads.

Didn't spend a lot on my speakers but am happy with the product. I replaced some infinity speakers which were better quality but couldn't find anything comparable to them in my price range (not saying there wasn't any). Am happy with them overall
Pros:
Blew out my right side so anything was an improvement
Cons:
None, they installed easily. Since I had already replaced the factory speakers the kit wasn't necessary.

Go-To Spekaer

Written By Sam, Madison, WI on Sunday, March 30, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

You cannot beat this speaker for the price! I recommend these to anyone on a budget and have installed them in many vehicles. Kicker's slogan "Livin' Loud" really rings through with the CS series. They sound good powered by a head unit, and they sound great when given a little extra power.
Pros:
Inexpensive Loud Good Bass
Cons:
Tweeter wire soldered to speaker input tab always gets in the way of the spade connecting fully.

Great Speakers, A Little boomy

Written By umina323, Folsom, CA on Friday, March 28, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers sound GREAT, but are a little boomy. I'd recomment using ALL kicker speakers if you get these... I have some kenwoods in the back and put these in the front but can't seem to get a good balanced EQ that all of the speakers like. These have a TON of bass which is kinda boomy and not much treble. I love them, but they're kind of a pain at the same time. Also, BE CAREFUL where you mount these, they have so much bass that they will make any panel that's not glued or screwed down rattle like no tomorrow!! A couple of my door panel clips broke when I pulled them to install these... Have been listening to buzzes and rattling at any volume higher than a whisper.
Pros:
Great bass Great sound
Cons:
LOTS of bass (almost too much?) Makes everything rattle

A GREAT upgrade to factory blown front door speakers in an 07 Laredo, sound is crisp and loud with just the stock radio. Would normally listen at level 30 on the dial before but now im around 20. Would be 5 star if they had a bit more mids/bass without the distortion at high volume. All and all extremely pleased.

2000 Durango - Decent, not sure what I was expecting...

Written By Nick, Ohio on Monday, March 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Upon the advice of a Crutchfield Advisor, I purchased four of these to replace the OEM 6.5" found in each of my Durango's four doors. Leaving the rest of the truck stock, these were replacements for blown speakers. The sound is assuredly better than the nasty OEM speakers, which were damaged anyhow. Sound is not fantastic until the not-replaced-because-they're-still-fine OEM tweeters kick in, but this may be a limitation of the OEM's stereo and factory Infinity amp. Once the highs kick in, the entire system sounds great, but I think I was expecting more highs or mids out of the Kickers. As disclosure, you should take my advice or review with a grain of salt because I'm far from an audiophile.

Installation was straightforward, but even with all the included freebies, I had to resort to small brass tubing acting as 1.5" standoffs to get the speaker up out of the door panel. There was no clean way to mount it (as other Durango owners in the forums have expressed), but the standoffs were clean and simple and I had brass tube lying around from a separate project.

2011 Wrangler Unlimited Rollbar Install

Written By Steph, Southern PA on Sunday, March 23, 2014

The previous owner had installed some 5 1/4 JL Audio speakers. There was no bass whatsoever, so maybe he had a sub that he took with him when he sold the Jeep. I have only installed the rollbar, but I have another set of these Kickers to install in the dash. Even with just the rollbar installed, they sound amazing. They are being pushed by a Pioneer 2400BT, which peaks at 50W per channel.
Pros:
Sounds amazing, with plenty of bass for a box on wheels
Cons:
none so far

Excellent Sound!

These speakers sound excellent! I drive a 2010 Civic Sedan and have the component version of these in the front and the sound is great, but somewhat limited since I do not have an amp. I will be getting an amp to reach the high RMS rating of these. Bass is more than sufficient with a compact car. Awesome product! Highly recommended with no regrets.
Pros:
Great Mids, high-lows, and highs!
Cons:
A bit tinney at very loud volumes (no amp). Very minor.

These were the easiest speakers to install. Great product for the buck. I chose these 61/2 in. over stocked 51/4 in. for more range. Replaced front and rear, using them with stocked radio. Because I'm hearing impaired, I was a little scepticle about online purchase. But Crutchfield put my doubts to rest. High and low range are great. Thanks guys and gals, Next will be to replace the stocked radio.
Pros:
on time delivery/easy install

GMC Sierra 2006 Front Door Replacement

Written By Franko, Clemson, SC on Tuesday, March 18, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these speakers to replace the factory "Bo$$" front set that had failed. These were recommended by a Crutchfield rep. The installation went very smooth with the added mounting ring and wiring harness. The new speakers sound great and I believe the quality is better. The whole Crutchfield experience went very smooth and the shipping was fast.
Pros:
Heavy duty speakers. Easy install. Really great sound. Great Crutchfield support.
Cons:
The screws mounting the speaker to the adapter ring were a bit long and interfered with the door speaker hole. I just substituted shorter screws.

MINI Cooper S is a rockin', or uh, Kickin'...

Written By Ron, Cary, NC on Monday, March 17, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed the Kicker 40CS654 speakers in my MINI Cooper S Convertible, along with a Kenwood KDC-358U head unit, and a Clarion XC1410 amp to replace the factory Harman Kardon system. These speakers put the factory speakers to shame, and this system combination gives me harder driving sound that is also very clear and pure. I now do not need to run at full volume in order to hear the stereo effectively when the top is down at 70 mph! These speakers are a great value, and I am usually a Polk Audio fan, but these Kickers gave me everything I was looking for, and they had a great price tag as well. At first, I used these without a subwoofer, and they definitely had more punch than the HK system had, but I decided to add the Sound Ordnance B-8PTD powered subwoofer to the mix, and this MINI is now a rockin'!
Pros:
Great sound, good bass without subwoofer, and good overall value.
Cons:
None!

Written By craig, Arizona on Wednesday, March 12, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I added these to a Kenwood DNX570HD in my 2009 Frontier king cab. I haven't even put and amp in yet. Only throwing 20 watts to each speaker at the moment and with a little bit of equalizer adjustment, they are loud, clear, and give a little thumpiness to the back of the truck. I can only imagine what they would sound like adding and amp to these speakers. No buyer remorse here!!
Pros:
Loud, clear sound, and good bass. A nice all around speaker. Don't try to use these as a supplement for a sub though. Won't even compare in that aspect.
Cons:

I installed these speakers in my 2003 bmw 330xi on my own. Easy installation, Installed them in the rear deck against the back wind shield. I gotta say, that these speakers bang. It literally makes the lows sounds so much tighter and rich. Also Car seats vibrates in a good way. Something personally that i like. The speakers are worth the money. Cant go wrong nor complain.

Great Upgrade!

Written By Anonymous, Cedar City, UT on Wednesday, March 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these to replace my factory front door speakers in my 2008 Silverado Extended cab, without the Bose system. What a difference! These are a huge upgrade from the factory speakers. I'm still using my stock head unit and don't see a reason to replace it. I listen mostly to hard rock, so I don't need a lot of bass, but these little speakers actually put out a surprising amount of bass with just the stock unit. Installation was pretty easy, following the supplied instructions. I've already ordered the 5 1/4's for the back doors. I suppose you could add a replacement head unit, and small sub, but for what I listen to, just the speaker upgrade was a tremendous jump in sound quality.
Pros:
Great sound, good bass, easy install, great price/quality

09 Silverado

Written By Travis J., Blanchard, Ok on Tuesday, March 04, 2014

Ok this review is for the good ole people that doesn't understand the whole speakers and stereo lingo. I installed these kickers in my silverado all 4 doors. At first you can clearly tell they don't have near the bass as factory, but they do sound more clear at lower and higher volumes. The bass may be because I have a factory head unit and I'm staying optimistic and hoping that the new boss unit I've ordered will give them an extra kick in the bass! An if so these will be ten star speakers! Also speakers have a break in period like vehicles so hopefully that's gunna help to!
Pros:
Clearer at higher and lower volumes.
Cons:
Not even close to the factory speakers as far as bass...

An overwhelming upgrade from the factory speakers, obviously. The bass is surprisingly deep for smaller speakers and the mids and highs are full and exceptional! Great overall sound that flows thru the entire car effortlessly, even with the factory stereo supplying the power.

Overall, appear to be a good quality speaker, but my factory head unit didn't drive these well enough. Found designed stock speakers performed better on mids and lows. Highs were better though on these, but wasn't upgrading for better highs anyway.
Pros:
Quality
Cons:
Disappointing lows May need amp if keeping stock head unit to realize full potential.

5 STARS!!!

Written By Jared, Bartlesville, OK on Thursday, February 27, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put these speakers in the front doors of my 2001 extended cab Silverado about a week ago. Let me tell you... The bass is like no other. I have to keep my stereo volume at a max of 30/35 though. My S.O. 8-BP begins to make flutter sounds after that, but with these speakers in the front and the 4x6" ones in the back, that is my ONLY problem. I highly recommend these speakers.
Pros:
Loud, deep bass. Can withstand a lot Covers look VERY sexy
Cons:
The bass is really good, but that makes it a little hard to install at first. The magnet is VERY strong and it took me a while to get the speaker held in place where I want it to install. ONLY problem so far.

Awesome Speakers

Written By PurpleToxin, Albuquerque, NM on Thursday, February 27, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are awesome, WAY better than the stock stuff I had in my 99 Jeep Cherokee. I put them in all 4 corners and man does it sound good. Currently I only have 50w peak going to them from my head unit which is way underpowered. But still they create enough power to shake all my mirors. It was plug and play with the harness I got, about a 30 min job for all 4.
Pros:
Clean Sound Nice Bass Good Price
Cons:
None

Kicker Speakers came quick

Written By Allan, Syracuse, Utah on Wednesday, February 26, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had read that the stock speakers generally wore out and get "tired". So I thought I would install new ones in my 2003 Silverado. To be honest, I can't tell a big difference. In fact, I think these Kickers sound more "tin-ney" (if that's a word?). Maybe with time the will find their sweet-spot.
Pros:
Installation and fit was easy with the Crutchfield-supplied brackets and wiring harness.
Cons:
Driver's side door DIY instructions didn't match well as to where the screws were on the 2003 versus a 2004. They are different.

These are very good speakers at a great price. I replaced the factory speakers with these and they really sound good. They are an obvious improvement. The Website said I would have to trim the retaining rings to install these speakers. This was not true. I bolted them right in my Subaru Baja with no modifications at all.
Pros:
Very good sound- easy to install- great price
Cons:
could use a little more bass

Good Speakers

Written By JohnD, Las Vegas on Wednesday, February 19, 2014

Crisp clean highs full mids and for a speaker this size the bass notes are not too bad. Definitely a quality speaker. Not as good as the equivalent component speaker but for the price difference and ease of installation this is a good buy.
Pros:
Price, compactness
Cons:
The screws that came with the mounting kit (Metra 82-3412 for nissan versa) Crutchfield supplied were too short; the screws that came with the speakers were too long. I ended up hacksawing the Kicker screws down about an eighth of an inch to mount the basket to the bracket.

Great Upgrade On A Budget

Written By Bob H, Lancaster, Pa on Wednesday, February 19, 2014

Excellent sound quality for the size of the driver. Easy installation with a little mechanical knowhow and Crutchfield included the necessary wire adapters which made installation that much easier. I bought these as an upgrade for factory speakers and am very pleased with the sound quality. With the proper set up on a head unit the bass can kick and rumble a good bit even without an amp. I would highly recommend these, especially for the price and size.
Pros:
Good bass response, clear and loud mids and crisp high end. Easy installation.
Cons:
I just wish I had an amp to really let these sound to their full potential.

Great Quality and Price

Written By Tyler, Orlando, FL on Tuesday, February 18, 2014

I recently purchased and installed these in my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee and they are great. I did my research and decided to purchase these over some polk speakers. They came at a great price and overall I am very impressed. I installed these in the front doors and installed the '40cs674' model in the rear doors and its turned out great. As of now I only have the factory radio in the jeep and there is a noticeable difference in bass and quality in all four sides. I know when I put an indash receiver in later this month it'll only get better.

I will definitely continue to buy Kicker products and recommend them from now on. Crutchfield is also an amazing website, everyone was very helpful and made the whole process much easier
Pros:
-Price -I'm not exactly someone who wants a lot of bass, but for those of us that want an upgrade over the factory model for a cheap price, this does the trick and then some. -Easy install
Cons:
-none so far

These speakers were easy to install. They fit my Tacoma perfectly without using the adapters. They are much louder and cleaner sounding than the factory speakers, using the same JVC head unit. The highs are crystal clear and crisp. They dont produce as much bass as the factory speakers, but they produce a much tighter bass sound. Very satisfied.
Pros:
Loud, clean sound Very crisp highs Easy installation
Cons:
Less bass than expected

Giving 5 stars because I am pleased with these speakers. Running them straight off an Alpine XM head unit. Bass is strong and distorts at double the volume at the same radio settings as I had with factory Mitsubishi speakers. Was surprised at the increased treble as well as same settings as before speakers. Definitely worth the money. I suspect that adding an amp to run these would make them really sound good at higher volumes.
Pros:
Perform as advertised. Worth the price.
Cons:
Not really a con... But A LOT of additional treble that I wasn't expecting.

Kicker 6.5 inch speakers for my jeep wrangler soundbar

These small and easy upgrade speakers have made a huge difference in my jeep wrangler's soundbar. The factory speakers are really cheap, more cheap than I would have ever thought. These are very easy to install and provide a much better quality with my music. I highly recommend to someone who wants a little bit better sound but does not want to have too much.
Pros:
Easy to install, great sound, way better than factory speakers
Cons:
Not really a con but if you are not mechanically inclined you will have some trouble in getting the adapter bracket to work easily. I pulled out the factory speakers first which told me everything that I needed to know to replace them.

Bought two pair of these for my 05 Dodge Ram quad cab. The sound is impressive. These speakers sound best with an after market HU and amp. The highs are clear and the mids thump nicely with 300 watts. I also replaced my dash speakers with the 3 1/2 inch kickers from the CS line and put two 10" kicker comps in the back. By far the best set up I have ever had. These speakers can handle a lot of power and so far I can't get them to distort. I highly recommend kicker for quality sound reproduction. My Ram rocks!
Pros:
For the price you can't get a better 6 1/2 inch speaker. Shipping was fast and I got everything I needed for installation.
Cons:
Can't keep my kids out of my truck.

I had considered a higher end, more expensive, component speaker system but I based on the favorable reviews these speaker received on Crutchfield, I ended up choosing these Kickers and they sound great. Original speakers were worn out in Marilyn's 2000 VW Beetle, and the Kicker speakers were recommended to us by Tyler. They were easy to install with the included guide, wiring harness, and mounting brackets. From a sound quality standpoint, they blow the factory speakers I replaced away.
