It's time for an upgrade

Upgrading the old factory speakers in your car will give you a huge bump in sound quality, and Kicker designed CS Series speakers to get your sound system rockin' without breaking the bank. You'll enjoy your music even more when you hear all the details that your muddy-sounding factory speakers couldn't begin to reproduce.

Built tough

Kicker's 40CS654 speaker set provides low-end from a tough 6-1/2" polypropylene woofer, with a polyester foam surround that will stay strong for years to come. The 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter takes care of the vocal and instrumental details that'll really bring your music to life. These speakers sound great powered by a factory radio or an aftermarket car stereo, and they'll really rock when connected to an external amplifier. Grilles are included.

Sound great, and were easy to install

2006 Chevrolet Express
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these for my 2006 Chevy Express full sized van and they are awesome. After upgrading my headunit to a Pioneer Bluetooth enabled unit the stock speakers always rattled. These solved the problem and have a much wider response. Also, they bolted right in without the need of adapters. I literally swapped both front door speakers in less than 30 minutes. I found an online video on how to remove the door panels which was pretty easy.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very happy with everything. The speakers were an upgrade from factory speakers. What an improvement! They were easy to install after looking at the information Crutchfield sent me. The free speaker mounting adapter made mounting the speakers a snap. One reviewer said the screws were too long and he was right. I cut them off and they worked great. After all, they came with the speakers, not the adapter! I looked at a you tube video on how to remove my door panel but it was not right. The information Crutchfield sent was right in every way! Some reviewers said there was not much bass, but it was at least as good if not better. The highs were much better. I wish I had don't this a long time ago! I will do business with Crutchfield again, they make it easy.

Pros: easy, improved sound.

Cons: none

I was looking to just replace factory speakers, these do just fine with my after market HU. Bought another set to go in rear doors, that about rounds out the mids, just have to add my subs now. Other than that sound decent for their price, nothing fancy.

Pros: Price, sound decent after broke in. Probably sound even better amped.

Cons: Gotta have the fingers of a five year old to connect adapter wires to the speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fit and install was easy, it handles the factory power with ease, clean highs, punchy mid-high bass but like others, the cheap almost no magnet factory speaker had more low end bass. 4 of these to replace factory for mids and highs would be fine but then your going to need a sub woofer to replace the bass. Note: same speaker in 2 different vehicles gave a completely different bass response. car was poor and truck was great. it might be the head unit and other factors that gave this install a bad bass response.

Pros: Cheap, easy install, well built and will prob outlast the car.

Cons: No low bass

2000 GMC Sierra 1500

Just installed these in my 2000 GMC Sierra 1500. They fit perfect and have great sound, especially some good bass. I compared these to other 6.5's in a big box store, and for the price, these were best. The only mod I had to make was the mounting screws provided were way too long. They kept me from being able to snap in the bracket. Luckily I had some extra smaller screws sitting around that I could use.

Pros: Thump

Cons: Not 3-way

Should be in its own class

Written by: Bruce from Fairfax, VA on March 21, 2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ok, let me start by saying that this is not a high end speaker. Now let me continue by saying that it is a pretty good speaker, in fact, one that offers something that many (most) 6.5" high end speakers don't offer---acceptable mid-bass. I've read lots of reviews. Everyone gushes over the Focals and JLs adding that they will be fine when a sub is added (which it will, at this level of audio). Enter the Kicker CS coaxial speaker. It is a little powerhouse capable of filling out the mid-bass of non-subwoofer systems so they sound pretty darn good. I even read a Crutchfield review of the JL Evolution series speaker that noted the bass was a little weak but rescued by the Kicker CS in the rear doors. Having read this, and having heard the CS compared with the KS and other brands locally, my ears told me that this speaker somehow offers something special that the higher end speakers are not. Right off the bat it plays lower frequencies (down to 35 or 40 Hz) with a rigid cone that produces a tighter, more aggressive bass response. Its tweeters are bright, easy to distinguish above the bass, which is perfect for coaxials in the rear doors, but maybe a bit too bright to have blasting from the dash (in the CSS component speakers)...but it does the mid-bass so nicely that I am considering it for the front. VERDICT - The CS should be the first in a new class of speaker that I will call the "Mid-Sub Rear Door (MSRD)" speaker. No other speaker does what it does.

Pros: Durable quality construction, tight sound, probably the best mid-bass in its class

Cons: tweeters a tad bright for the silk-dome crowd

I replaced 2 out of 4 speakers on my Jeep XJ after one not working upfront...it was the wire that was bad but for this price i wanted to try two new ones....one on drivers side front and one on the rear...i know i know i should all match, but after doing some trials, they all sounded the same...i cannot tell which is stock or Kicker now...so i left the two stock ones alone...

Pros: Probably last longer that the stokers as seems good quality, easy fit...matches stock location on my 2000 Jeep XJ

Cons: Not any better than the 2000 jeep speakers....

2012 Honda Accord
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used these to replace the factory speakers in my Honda Accord and I couldn't be happier. They really bring out the mids and highs, although they're a little lacking on bass - to be expected from speakers this size. I will say that the bass they do produce is very clean with no distortion or humming that you typically get from cheaper speakers. As always, Crutchfield is on point with their installation materials and instructions, install went as smoothly as possible. I'd highly recommend these for anyone looking to build a sound system, they're a huge upgrade over most factory speakers, and will really shine when paired with subwoofers.

Pros: Great clarity on the highs and mids

Cons: Lacking on the low end, but the bass they do produce sounds very clean

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been looking for replacement speakers for my 2003 Escalade for sometime now. The Bose factory system sounded really good, but the speakers were 1-way and they were 13 years old so it was time to replace them. These kicker CS series were perfect because I do a lot of studio mixing and mastering, and every sound engineer knows that you need a great reference system to compare your mixes to. I highly recommend the speakers if you are looking for a balanced frequency response across the audible spectrum!

Pros: Awesome design, excellent frequency response, ample power handling capacity

Cons: None

I put these speakers in all 4 doors of a 2006 CR-V along with an Alpine head unit (Alpine CDE-152) and the inline Alpine 45X4 RMS amp (Alpine KTP-445A Power Pack) which fit in the dash behind the head unit. Highs are crisp and clean, as much as they can be as coax's behind door panels. However, when you turn on the "Bass Engine" on the head unit, you would swear there is a small sub hiding somewhere in the car. Very pleased with the overall package.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordered 2-pairs of these to replace the stock speakers in my '12 Silverado Crew Cab. I had been noticing that the stock speakers needed more volume to hear clearly as time went on. The installation was fairly simple, took between 2-3 hours to replace all four door speakers. It helped having the adapters and wiring harnesses included as they probably saved an hour over soldering and prepping the old speaker frames to accept the new Kickers. About the sound - these kickers are clearer and louder than stock by a pretty wide margin. I ran two of these in the back doors so I could compare against the stock speakers in the front doors and one thing really stood out - the bass. These Kickers don't have the deep, muddy bass that the stock speakers have. But the mid and high-range clarity that you gain in it's place makes up for it and that's what I really needed so that I could hear my music over the road noise. Crutchfield was great - quick, free shipping and lots of extras (plus instructions.) Nice deal. But I did order scratch and dents and one speaker cone was cracked. Sealed it up with some clear nail polish and it seems fine that way.

Pros: Clarity, mid-range and dB sensitivity.

Cons: A little short on the bass side.

These speakers sounded great. I had a terrible HU but they did their very best to pump out decent sound at a great price. Unfortunately, one of the speakers made it less than a year before blowing, bummer... But, luckily they came with a one year warranty and I'm sure they'll be replaced by the end of next week. Build quality looked legit, just didn't hold up for me.

Pros: Price, Sound

Cons: Speaker blew after less than a year after being run very gently on a low-output system.

So first off I just want to say that these speakers sound amazing, I am running them on my alpine head unit and nothing more and they give out clear sound all around and booming bass when I want it. I installed these in all 4 doors on my Toyota Tundra double cab (even though according to crutchfield they wouldn't fit in the front doors). It did take a little monkeying with the bracket to make it fit in the front (I believe if I had ordered the 6 3/4" size it would've fit in a lot easier) but in all it was a very easy install and I would definitely recommend them to anyone who cares about the sound in their car/truck.

Pros: Good sound, powerful bass

Cons: Crutchfield was misinformed about the compatability of these speakers with my truck.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent sound - huge improvement over OEM speakers (even with OEM in-dash head unit outputs)! A little adventure adapting them to the cutouts in my 2013 Veloster (cutouts were larger than the speakers, and recommended adapters didn't help much), but in the final analysis I am very pleased and would definitely recommend them.

Pros: Excellent full range sound; efficient enough to use with OEM head unit - external amplifier not needed

Purchased these speakers hoping to upgrade the sound of my factory sound system in my 2015 Honda Accord. After installing, it's safe to say that the factory system put out wayyy more sound than these. Possibly because factory radio is under powered for the speakers, not sure. Regardless, I would have been better off leaving everything factory.

Pros: Nice highs, look good

Cons: Low sound, low powered mids, overall disappointed by the sound.

Great Speakers

Written by: Roscoe from North Carolina on January 14, 2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speakers definitely do what they are designed to do. They are a small cone size to begin with so don't expect amazing mid-range punch. However, the woofer working with the integrated tweeter produces an overall very good sound quality in the mid-high range. Excellent clarity and very crisp sound. I installed these to replace factory BOSE speakers in a cadillac SRX. So even over a premium factory sound system it was an improvement. And these things are cheap too so its a win win. I am very satisfied. My only disappointment with the product is that it did not come with a Kicker sticker which I think looks really cool.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought two pairs of these speakers for my daughter's car when one of the front speakers start rattling. I replaced the front speakers immediately and noticed they didn't have nearly the bass as the original factory speakers. I was a little disappointed at first because there was way too much ear-piercing treble. I adjusted the EQ to where it was tolerable. But that's not where the story ends. The factory unit only put out about 8 to 10 watts per channel. For a graduation gift I decided I would install a premium stereo in her car, two pairs of these Kickers, along with a sub and amp. I installed a Pioneer 80PRS head unit, these speakers, a 12" Digital Designs sub, and a 5-channel JBL amp pushing 75 WPC on these, and 350 watts on the sub. After installing the HU and amp these speakers came to life! They sound absolutely amazing! As clear as can be in 60 hertz range and up. These speakers can handle power flawlessly, and sound extremely good doing it. The point is, if your just replacing factory speakers, these speakers may or may not be what your looking for. If your looking to add to your stereo later, these speakers will most definitely fit the bill. With the low power that most factory units put out these won't "wow" you, but if you add a little power they will.

Pros: Clean sound, good staging, and excellent power handling.

Cons: Don't really sound very good with a low wattage head unit.

Terrible sound and experience

Written by: BrianB from Oklahoma on January 7, 2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers to replace the factory front door speakers on my 2008 Trailblazer SS Bose with Nav. I installed the the drivers side speaker, then tested it. The passenger, factory speaker was much louder at a given volume, and the sound was much better. Called Crutchfield support was told that Bose has some kind of crossover filter that blocks high frequencies, preventing the Kicker (2-way) speaker from getting the full range of sound. Also, the Kicker speaker requires much more power than the factory speaker, so at any volume the factory speaker sounded louder. I bought both the front and rear Kickers, but was told by the sales person not to replace the factory tweeters in the dash. Because the kicker speaker takes more power, the tweeter is blasting you out when you turn up the volume. Bottom line, these speaker would not work with the rest of my factory components. The sales person should have known that, and directed me to other products. I returned them.

2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After doing the research I decided to order speakers from Crutchfield rather than get the same kickers from an ebay source, because I thought the extra accessories would be helpful, and they were. The package arrived literally the next afternoon, less than 48 hours. I bought the foam speaker enclosures and cut an inch diameter hole in the back of them for the wire to go through and "breathing" air for the speaker. When clamping the foam into the OEM replacement plastic clip-ons it's a tight fit but the idea is to not have something in the door buzz... which would drive me crazy. Others have discussed the bass response as lacking but I found the bass from my stock head unit set to "jazz" was more distinct, not louder but "better" than the OEM speakers. Which were both broken lol. Look at your OEM speaker, it weighs half of what these kickers weigh, with cheap paper cone and flimsy foam surround, it's a wonder they lasted this long. Now it sounds like I'm standing next to a drum kit when Phil hits the toms. I only replaced the door speakers, and now due to some serious turning up the volume the back door speakers are crackling and I'll probably have to replace those also since they are ruining the sound from the new speakers.

Pros: Installing the speaker is easier than removing the door panel.

Cons: The instructions were a little lacking, but I figured it out intuitively. At first it appeared there were no screws to attach the speaker to the supplied plastic snap-in bezel. I bought some nuts and bolts from the hardware store, then discovered the screws were in the plastic wrap of the second speaker I had not completely unwrapped yet. For this installation you don't use the grill cover that comes with the speaker.

I decided to try to replace the old cracked speakers in my 2002 Tahoe myself after getting a bid for $850 from a local shop. I'm not very handy and figured I'd end up taking a big mess to an installer to finish after attempting to do it myself. These Kicker speakers fit perfectly without any retrofitting and sound fantastic. The only challenging part was removing all the interior panels necessary to access the speakers. Crutchfield's instructions were very specific and made it doable. Even for me. Installing 4 speakers and a subwoofer took me about 5 hours but I did it and it sounds vastly better than the factory speakers ever did.

Great factory upgrade on a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab

Written by: AKJeeper from Kodiak, Alaska on December 22, 2015

2006 Dodge Ram 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers did exactly what I hoped they would do - clean up the sound from my factory stereo, and utilize it to the fullest potential. I upgraded the front door speakers on my truck ('06 Ram Quad Cab) first, with the 6x9 version of these speakers. If I were to do it again, I'd replace all 4 speakers at the same time. These 6.5" speakers fit in the factory opening in the door, but I had to drill some holes as the factory screw locations did not match these new speakers. Another note - my truck was wired with the rear speakers out of phase with the front, so I had to swap the polarity on the rear speaker wires. A pretty common thing to happen on the 02-08 Rams, I hear. I elected to swap the polarity on the Crutchfield-supplied speaker wire adapters, as that was much easier to access and modify than the wiring in the door pillars. As for the sound of these speakers - the high notes are a little bright with the factory stereo, just like with the 6x9s. I suspect the factory stereo uses an exaggerated treble curve to compensate for the factory paper woofer's lack of high frequency response. The sound from these speakers are what you can expect out of a 6.5" speaker - not very deep bass, but the bass that's there is clear and tight. Mid tones are great, too. Not muddy at all. These speakers complement the 6x9s up front very well. Good balanced sound and it no longer feels like you've got cotton in your ears with these speakers. I was amazed at the difference!

Pros: Great clear sound for the money. Makes good use of the factory stereo's power output. Crisp highs, clear mid tones, tight mid-bass. Crutchfield supplies wire adapters to fit the factory wiring. Would sound even better with a good aftermarket deck - a great incremental upgrade for those of us who have to upgrade in stages.

Cons: Had to drill holes to mount in my '06 Ram's rear doors - not a big deal in my opinion. The sound out of these speakers was so good that I finally realized that my truck had the rear speakers wired out-of-phase from the front. Once switched, all 4 speakers worked together instead against each other. Odd, because I never noticed the out-of-phase problem with the factory speakers - probably because I couldn't hear them very well.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Kicker 40CS654 speakers sounds very good. They beat the factory speakers hands-down and came with the wires that hooked into the factory connector. They are not going to thump, but I can feel the base. These were factory replacements in my 2004 C240 which is going to my daughter. I was disappointed in the free mounting brackets (Crutchfield) as I was forced to drill holes to get them to line up with the mounts in the doors, but it was possible without too much trouble and... they were free. Note: I have separate tweeters in the doors. These definitely do the job of upgrading the factory speakers on a budget. Also please note that I am not an audiophile, if I was, my budget would have been 10x.

Pros: Price... seriously, if you pay any less, you're going to get a tin can.

Cons: Don't expect to feel the bass in your chest.. but they can rattle the sunglasses in the map pocket.

Got these hooked up to a 60RMS x 4 for 240 RMS full. I Listen to hip hop. That's about it. No bass. Absolutely none. I had a pair of Alpines2 a JVC DVD player. They hit bass like subwoofers. Mid played perfect. Highs just as good as the subs. I'm not really sure what these Kickers are. The paper door speakers advertised as 15W 4 ohms had better base. There wasn't much but it did sound better. The highs not so much. These Kickers sound like there's a fork in them. All of the rave reviews leave me to question. I only purchased them because of the reviews. I would've spent more for Alpines. I'm disappointed.

Pros: There loud I guess? Maybe for country and rock and roll. I don't know? Vocals are alright.

Cons: >No bass. None. >Mids. Where?

These speakers produce a clean, well-balanced sound are are a great price. With an aftermarket head unit to provide the power they need (as opposed to a factory head unit) they are wonderful and responsive. I highly recommend these.

Pros: Great price, excellent sound quality.

Cons: Outer ring tabs cause some fitting issues in Civics, but fit well in most Hondas.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently installed four of these in my 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with factory head unit and they made a huge difference. Now, that being said, if you're looking for bass that is going to blow out your back window, you're going to need a powered sub and aftermarket head unit, in my opinion. As far as getting decent quality sound, these definitely work well.

Pros: Good sound at a decent price.

Cons: None that actually pertain to this particular product. The adapter brackets that Crutchfield included were a little finicky though.

Speakers are great and last very well. Bought a set for my truck and the sounds quality is dramatically better than stock speakers. Pros: Nice sound, very durable, and easy to install and fit in many models.

I had to replace the OEM rear side panel speakers in my 2004 GTO because one of them was blown. I decided on the Kicker 40CS654s because of the price and solid reviews on Crutchfield's site. The instructions to remove and install my new speakers were spot on for the most part. It took me about an hour and half to do both sides. The wiring harness fit great as well as new Kicker speakers. These speakers look and sound great. Much better sounding and looking than the OEM ones. Although I still have a stock radio and stock speakers, except for these new Kickers, they definitely add more of a punch when listening to my music. Overall these were a great value and definitely will be buying from Crutchfield again.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Recommended by Crutchfield staff after I sent an email asking for assistance in choosing speakers for my truck, '02 Chevy Avalanche Z66. Good fit and I didn't need the speaker brackets. The factory speakers were blown; these were installed in the rear door. I wasn't able to buy the front component speakers and the rear at the same time so I ordered these first. These speakers sound great through the factory radio; I could play the radio with these speakers alone so I can't wait to get the front speakers. Music sounds clean, has a good bass level, and can turn it up without distortion. So if your looking for better sound or are upgrading your factory speakers and not trying to out do the 16 year old kid next door, these are perfect.

Pros: Great sound, good fit, reasonably priced.

Cons: None yet.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was going to give these 4 stars, because they didn't quite live up to my expectations. I was hoping to get a little more bass out of them, but honestly my expectations were a little high, and misguided, especially for the little amount of money I was spending for these speakers. They really are a good bang for your buck. I've had them installed for a week now to replace my stock speakers in my 2000 Tacoma. Obviously the sound quality is significantly improved, and if I want that "bump" I was initially hoping for I can just add a little sub in the mix and be good to go. Very happy with my purchase.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good choice if you're trying to do a cheap upgrade as I was. The Kickers provide more clarity than my factory speakers especially in the higher ranges. They do provide less bass than I was expecting but I don't have an amp hooked to them (yet), I'm using an aftermarket pioneer receiver. Overall a pretty good value for the price. The instructions provided with the free brackets were slightly confusing and it turns out I did not need them, the quick connect adapters were nice though.

Pros: Cheap, decent sound.

Cons: Less bass than expected.

Kicker 40CS654 Install 2009 Jeep Wrangler with Infinity system

2009 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Install went well, supplied brackets fit with minor modification. Previous posts were correct regarding these being a small 6.5 inch speaker. While lows are somewhat lacking, mid and highs are clearer than stock infinity speakers. The mix of stock in dash and the kickers in the roll bar area take away the muffled sound for the upper tonal ranges. Factory sub was replaced with a pioneer, which provided a thighter punch.

Pros: Clean sound, easy install. Bought on sale happy with the mix as noted above.

Cons: Lows lacking but might pick up a little with some more exercise.

'06 Highlander. Was it worth it? Things to consider.

Written by: GM37 from Pennsylvania on November 15, 2015

2006 Toyota Highlander
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A little background first. As a lifelong audiophile, I've been blessed with owning some of the finest audio components, both home and (factory) car systems, though this was my first stab at what was hopefully a quick upgrade for my Highlander (base). My gold standard in factory systems was the Mark Levinson system in my Lexus GS430, so my mark is admittedly high. My issue with the Toyota was the deplorable FM radio. CD's, pretty decent, and we all know the source makes a huge difference in most any system. In hindsight, I knew it was a sensitivity issue with the HU (and in Crutchfield's defense, that tech rep brought the issue up), but I could not find a reasonably priced HU that matched the look and button color scheme. Can't stand the obvious aftermarket look. The vehicle specific installation sheet was invaluable. Upon removing the door panels and speakers, I was surprised to find the factory speakers to be Pioneer. Polypropylene cones and respectable magnet weights. Overall weight difference between the OE and the new Kickers was negligible (even with the OE's being in a plastic basket molded enclosure). My gut was immediately saying this is probably not worth it. The brackets included were hit and miss. One fit using all three OE screws, the other needed one new screw drilled out. Bottom line; Little to no sound improvement. Not worth the money to replace the rears coax's. It's the HU. Moral of my story: see what you have first!

Pros: Appears to be a well made speaker.

Cons: Unless your factory speakers (base grade) are blown or truly pure junk, this project resulted in a near zero sonic improvement. This is not a diss on Kicker. Just make sure (in advance) you are upgrading a system component that is worth doing. In my case, speakers provided no silver bullet. Will continue to search for a new HD radio head unit that matches/complements my interior, without breaking the bank. Lesson learned.
