Our take on the Kicker 40CS654

by John Pollard
Kicker

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

It's time for an upgrade

Upgrading the old factory speakers in your car will give you a huge bump in sound quality, and Kicker designed CS Series speakers to get your sound system rockin' without breaking the bank. You'll enjoy your music even more when you hear all the details that your muddy-sounding factory speakers couldn't begin to reproduce.

Built tough

Kicker's 40CS654 speaker set provides low-end from a tough 6-1/2" polypropylene woofer, with a polyester foam surround that will stay strong for years to come. The 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter takes care of the vocal and instrumental details that'll really bring your music to life. These speakers sound great powered by a factory radio or an aftermarket car stereo, and they'll really rock when connected to an external amplifier. Grilles are included.

Features

Polypropylene Woofer Cones: The Kicker CS-series speakers feature durable polypropylene woofer cones, resistant to moisture and temperature extremes found in automotive applications.

Ribbed Polyester Foam Surrounds: The ribbed polyester foam surrounds allow extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL.

1/2" PEI Balanced-dome Tweeters: The 1/2" PEI (polyetherimide) balanced-dome tweeters provide a smooth high frequency response with quick, detailed and spatially-correct imaging. The tweeters have strong neodymium magnets for higher power handling.

Mounting: In addition to fitting standard 6-1/2 and 4-hole 6-1/2 applications, the CS65 also has a standard 6-3/4 bolt pattern. However, if mounted in a 6-3/4 location the holes for the smaller pattern create an air leak, which must be sealed using a speaker baffle, or something similar.

Written By georgeL, Northern Virginia on Friday, September 19, 2014

I recently replaced my original equipment speakers with this set. Wow, its like night and day. I am so happy with the sound that, soon I will be adding an amp. They work great for me in my long daily commute. I would recommend a set to anyone. $ stares.
Pros:
Crutchfield price was great. Nothing else to buy. install was quick n eazy requiring only 2 small holes to be drilled. ( 2 factory holes lighned up the other 2 were drilled.0
Cons:
NONE, really dint even need to cut any wires. The Crutchfield provided connectors snapped into the factory harness and snapped into the speakers. Really eazy....... no cons

Great product, the sound difference on my accourd 2012 LX is Day and Night. I still have stock unit, but buying on Crutchfield is a no-brainier, those guys really know what they are doing; and I will be honest, you may save a few pennies elsewhere online but its not worth it! I installed myself (with the instructions provided by them) and it was great, so easy, it makes you even feel like you are an expert LOL. Definitely, Crutchfield got a new customer with me; extremely and highly recommended if you want honest people who cares about the customer first .

Pros:
A much better sound than stock!
Cons:
So far none

2011 Honda Civic SI - Poor Performance

Written By JustRick, Dothan, AL on Thursday, September 11, 2014

I purchased these to replace the rear speakers in a 2011 Honda Civic SI which had the factory speakers and radio. I called tech support and chatted with product advice before placing the order and informed them that I wanted to add some bass to the unit, which currently has very little. At the tech's suggestion, I purchased these Kickers and installed with customization to the supplied adapter. Unfortunately, what little bass I did have in the two rear speakers are now gone. The overall sound is very low and weak. With the radio fader focused solely on the rear speakers they're just not producing quality sound. I didn't expect to rattle the windows or wake the neighbors but I did expect them to outperform the factory paper cone speakers. Granted there are many factors involved, car, head unit, etc. but that's why I called before purchasing, to get an opinion on what would work well for my car.
Pros:
None at the moment
Cons:
No bass, weak or low sound. Doesn't out perform factory speakers. Speaker adapters needed modifying and factory grilles no longer fit.

Works ok with my stock head unit. Has a good performance over the full range. However, after I installed the foam baffles, most bass is gone. I tried cut bigger hole underneath the baffles and then cut the entire lower half. does help a little bit but not much.

Kicker Speakers are Awsome

Written By GeorgeS, Barrigada, GU on Monday, September 01, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers really made a difference, when I replaced the factory speakers in my 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, sound bar.
Pros:
The clarity was noticeable right away, even from the weaker output of my existing factory radio. I've heard the highs that were non-existent or muffled, when the factory speakers were in the sound bar.
Cons:
Was not able to get a mounting bracket for my speakers so I had to use the existing bracket from the old factory speakers. Basically, I just removed the old speakers from their mounting frame and just placed the new Kicker speakers in and completed the install. You'll have to destroy your old paper cone speakers in order to get the mounting frame you need.

Pros:
Crisp and clean with decent bass. I've seen some complaints about bass response but no 6" speaker mounted in a door cavity is going to do much better. Get real people..

I purchased these speakers to upgrade my truck from it's original factory speakers which was long overdue. I also had installed a Kenwood HD458U deck to go along with these. The speakers are nice and clear and can still pump out some sound for not being on an amp and just wired in to the deck. Great purchase for the money was a great upgrade for my truck.
Pros:
Nice Sound, Easy Install
Cons:
None.

Great speaker upgrade.

Written By GStrobe31, Miami, FL on Wednesday, August 20, 2014

I bought these speakers as a factory speaker replacement in my 2009 Honda Civic Sedan LX.

Sound:

These speakers are much better than the factory speakers. They are very sharp at first but it just has to break in (Tip: do not reduce your treble to remove the sharp sounds, it needs to play sharp for a while for it to die down). These speakers are not at their full potential with the factory head unit. You will need to power them much more to see their true colors. I highly recommend to get a aftermarket head unit or even an amp, if you can, to power these speakers. Many people are wondering about the bass, well this speakers again with a factory head unit will not be able to produce much bass. It can produce very decent, different, good bass notes. I currently play high quality songs with an equalizer app on my android phone to push the speakers more. With this combo I can make my doors shake and rattle very easily. Still it won't give enough bass to make the other cars next to you hear it, that's what subwoofers are for.

Installation: If your not mechanically savvy with your vehicle leave it to the professionals.

For 8th gen civic owners: the MasterSheet does not clearly state how to remove the door easily. There are screws they didn't mention that I had to take out. Also the locking mechanism of the doors are fragile and again the MasterSheet does not say how to disconnect them. I found out how through trial and error.
Pros:
Much better than stock speakers. Everything sounds much better
Cons:
Very sharp in break in period It needs more power to bring out it's full potential.

Definite upgrade!

Written By DB, Texas on Friday, August 08, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 2014 Jeep Wrangler. I wanted to upgrade the sound and still stay as stock as possible. I asked an advisor for suggestions. Shane recommended four of the Kickers to replace stock speakers in the dash and roll bar. The speakers were fairly easy to change out. The only problem was the adapter ring doesn't quite match up, both in the roll bar and the dash. The longest of the three arms requires trimming and the screw hole requires extending inward, but not a big deal. The supplied wiring adapter is idiot-proof. I found that you really don't need to take the dash as apart as the instructions guide. I took the side panel off, and a couple of the screws in the knee panel, and I had enough room to get the speakers in and out without taking the other parts out. The speakers went in fairly smoothly. The volume and quality of sound over the stock speakers is nice. Crutchfield always has been, and hopefully will continue to be great. Great recommendation Shane. Very pleased with the result.
Pros:
Volume and quality difference in the sound.
Cons:
Adapter bracket requires some mods.

Outstanding Stock Upgrade!

Written By Shane, Layton, UT on Friday, August 01, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently upgraded the sound system in my wife's Dodge Ram Quad Cab. I purchased these 6.5's along with the matching 6x9 Kicker CS component system to provide mid-range and mid-bass to compensate for the two Fosgate 12's and dedicated amp that rounded out the system. The result was a great sounding truck and a very happy wife. I like how the Kickers lit up the sound stage and brought a level of clarity that I could only try to convince my wife actually existed. The construction of the Kicker units is solid and the sound is outstanding, especially for my budget build. As a "backyard" installer for many years, I've been privileged to work with some much higher end equipment. Bang for buck, these Kickers rival several systems costing considerably more. With a little EQ and crossover tweaking, and a little break in time, I've got the system far exceeding my expectations. Add the little adapters that Crutchfield throws in and presto, you couldn't ask for an easier install and an incomparable difference to the improvement of sound. Don't think I could ask for a better sounding stock speaker replacement at this price.
Pros:
Good quality construction, great rear fill sound with a little tweaking, and a price that makes these quite the bargain.
Cons:
Considering price, and expectations...no real cons. They're not a component set, and should not be compared as such...they sound pretty darn good for a set of coaxial 6.5's mounted in rear doors.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speaker overall! For just $35 each, produces great sound. I recently had factory Chrysler speakers and well, they sucked. The right front door speaker was blown and needed to be replaced. Only problem I had with this product was making the bracket work with the factory thing next to the door. (Not sure what it's called) Had to make a few modifications but not to major. Only reason why this gets 4 stars. Comparing sound quality, great bass for the price as well as treble. 5 stars for sound and 4 for assembly.
Pros:
Bass Treble RMS Value is great
Cons:
Installation was quite tricky if you don't have a clever mind ;) didn't even bother with the manual.

After replacing a pair of Infinity Primus speakers that did not work in 2014 Honda CRV no matter what the research shows (needs to be all 4 speakers-2 cause the head to go into protection mode) I am just now starting to hear some bottom end..they have been used about an hour a day for 2 weeks. I realize there is a break in period and am hoping they surpass the pretty crappy stock speakers.
Pros:
Nothing concrete yet. Decent price, I guess (that is if they improve)

Break in time seems to take forever. Still not as good as what Honda equipped the car with but am hopeful

I put these in the front doors. Really nice upgrade from the crap stock. They have the best max handling of anything under $100 and really most similar door speakers were closer to $300. I liked them so much that I ordered another pair for the back doors. WOW. Now that made a MAJOR difference for less than $200. Pretty kickass. And I haven't even put a new deck in yet which should power them much better. Awesome upgrade. My friend who does tons of installs recommended them and he was 100% on point.

2001 BMW 325i 4 Door Front and Rear E-46

Written By BennyR, Denver, CO on Monday, July 07, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to install in my daughter's BMW 325i after discovering that the foam surrounds on all 4 of her original woofers had disintegrated from old age! When putting my ear right up to the four factory tweeters and the two factory midranges, they all sounded fine. So off I went to find a cheap alternative to BMW's (inferior, yet more expensive) replacement woofers. After visiting my local "Quality Auto Sound" and "Car Toys" I was disgusted that both stores insisted I needed to replace the factory head unit and the factory amp because I would never be able to get a perfect match and that they were probably "STARTING TO GO" anyway! NONSENSE! After consulting with Crutchfield about more expensive models from Polk, Infinity and Alpine, their adviser actually recommended these cheaper Kickers since their bass output was relatively strong and our factory stereo wouldn't be sending any signal to their tweeters anyway. The factory stereo only sends bass frequencies to the woofers, so they would blend right in with the four factory tweeters and the two factory midrange drivers! I installed the rear pair VERY easily! Very straightforward and took less than an hour, even with the slow pace and the many breaks my old, fat body demands! The front pair took about two and a half hours, partially because the screws they included were about an eighth of an inch too short and it took me awhile to figure that out. But then it was an easy $2.50 fix at the local hardware store!
Pros:
Although the 5.25" speakers would have been easier to fit into the front doors, I'm so glad I got the larger 6.5" for the front! The system as a whole sounds so balanced and well worth the relatively easy installation work required!
Cons:
I probably would have shaved an hour off my installation on the front speakers if I would have realized sooner that the screws that were included for the front speakers were just a touch too short. An easy fix since I took the whole door panel in to the hardware store and it took about 2 minutes for the guy to find the perfect match! Six metric machine screws later and I was done!

Good, but could be better

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are extremely clear, to the point where you can definitely tell if your audio source isn't high enough quality. Pandora sounds noticeably worse than music that I've put on a USB stick because you can hear the difference in the bitrate. For best results, stick with a USB stick full of audio files.

Unfortunately, they're almost unusable with how sharp the high end is. Even with the treble turned way down, there are still songs that are physically painful to listen to at high volume. Despite how good it is over all, I'll probably not get another pair for the rear speakers in my car, simply because I don't think I could handle more treble.
Pros:
Crisp, clear sound. Lots of power. Decent Bass.
Cons:
Painful amounts of treble. Will require lots of tuning to balance the system.

Perfect match

Perfect front door speakers for a 1999 Silverado. Mated with Sony MEX-GS610BT. Incredible clear, powerful sound.
Pros:
15 minute install per door. Must drill four holes for adaptor, but mounts solid. Used old strip foam from original speaker outside diameter to install between adaptor mont and door sheet metal to eliminate any potential vibration issues down the road. May not be necessary, but I look ahead.
Cons:
None.

Perfect stock replacement, true plug-n-play. I've got a 98 zj limited 5.9. If you have one of these, these are a perfect fit. They include the wiring harness and the door adapters. Making the install a snap, and they rock. If you have the stock Infinity Gold system, these are best replacement for the money.
Pros:
Good bass, med and highs. Easy installation, four speaker took me an hour.
Cons:
Don't know yet.

Replaced blown out factory speakers in front door of 02 silverado. These fit perfect with the supplied adapters.they sound great with factory radio. Crutchfield made it easy and shipped fast.
Pros:
Seem well made. Of course they're imports but still well made. Sound good. Fit perfect.
Cons:
None really, they do say designed and engineered in USA but they are not MADE in usa, so a little mis-leading.

Nice product

Written By DaveP, New Jersey on Tuesday, June 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speakers sound impressive for being powered by stock HU. I got the scratch&dent option, and one of the speakers had a slightly dented cone, and the outer foam ring had a significant tear/hole. Also, one of the adapter mtg brackets had a tab broken off. Unfortunately, my impatience got the best of me and I attempted to re-seal the speaker with glue instead of return it, which only shriveled the foam in that area. Surprisingly, the speakers still sound very good. Clarity of mids and highs are impressive, bass is a big improvement from stock but not the smoothest.

Bottom line- excellent product, sounds great with stock HU. But, definitely worth it to pay the extra $10 for brand new vs scratch&dent. Would definitely recommend as an affordable way to compliment a woofer in the trunk!
Pros:
Decent mids and crisssp treble (might even be too much for some, but a pro for me!)
Cons:
Inconsistent bass response, but I'm not running these with an amp. Also, "scratch & dent" was more like "ripped and dent." With a broken mounting bracket as well, I think a little more quality control is needed. However, I am thoroughly impressed by the wealth of knowledge provided on the Crutchfield site, the ease/speed of ordering, and the fact that they include brackets and adapters in the first place!

Great Audio Quality

Written By Chris L., Tulare, CA on Saturday, June 07, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sounding speakers and big improvement from OEM speakers. These speakers have enough bass that I don't need an amp or sub. For those who say they have poor sound and no bass then you must have no equalizer or have a OEM receiver. I replaced mine with a Pioneer receiver and paired with these speakers and the sound quality is awesome. And that's only with the front speakers in my Nissan Versa hatchback. Will be replacing my rear speakers soon which will sound even better
Pros:
Great sound, worth the money, big improvement from OEM speakers
Cons:
Little tricky to install if you need the adapter and splice wiring

Big Difference

Written By KDizzle, Land O'Lakes, FL on Wednesday, June 04, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have only installed the rear speakers but so far they sound great, much better than the factory ones. I was horrified at the super-cheap paper speakers I pulled out of my Civic. I can now at least hear some bass coming out. I ran into a small problem during installation as the screwholes in the brackets that Crutchfield sent did not quite line up with the factory holes and it was a real pain to get them screwed in at an angle, even after the holes were drilled out some. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the doors will go smoother!
Pros:
Nice bass response without being too "muddy" sounding. Clear highs and mids. Much better than factory at a very reasonable price.
Cons:
None so far!

Speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speaker are low cost and so is the audio. I installed these on a 3008 Honda Civic and it took me no more than 30 minutes to do it. They will provide a way better quality audio than your factory speakers (unless you are driving a luxury car), but the sound is not exactly the best. My wife 2006 X3 with factory speakers have better sound.
Pros:
Price Price Price For the money the sound is not bad
Cons:
If you expect really quality audio, this is not for you.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just replaced all 4 stock speakers in my 98 Cherokee with these and I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. They were easy to install, it took me no more than 30-45 minutes. The audio is fantastic for low cost speakers, good highs, and mids, and no lack of bass what so ever. I would say if you're looking to get good speakers but don't want to spend hundreds of $$$ on them, these are a great choice.
Pros:
low cost, easy install, great audio quality.
