Kicker 40CS654

It's time for an upgrade

Upgrading the old factory speakers in your car will give you a huge bump in sound quality, and Kicker designed CS Series speakers to get your sound system rockin' without breaking the bank. You'll enjoy your music even more when you hear all the details that your muddy-sounding factory speakers couldn't begin to reproduce.

Built tough

Kicker's 40CS654 speaker set provides low-end from a tough 6-1/2" polypropylene woofer, with a polyester foam surround that will stay strong for years to come. The 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter takes care of the vocal and instrumental details that'll really bring your music to life. These speakers sound great powered by a factory radio or an aftermarket car stereo, and they'll really rock when connected to an external amplifier. Grilles are included.

Product Highlights:

  • 2-way 6-1/2" speakers (pair)
  • polypropylene woofer cone with polyester foam surround
  • 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter
  • power range: 2-100 watts RMS (300 watts peak power)

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Easy to install and sounds great

Pros: Great fit

Cons: None so far

Sounds Good!!!

Written By krittah, New Orleans on Sunday, August 30, 2015

These speakers sound great. Low end bass could be better, but I think a added sub is really all these need to complete the full range. Install was very simple in the rear of my 2001 Xterra. Not so simple installing the component version of these in the front doors.

Pros: Good, clear speakers

Cons: Low end bass is lacking.

Nice Upgrade

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These Kickers are a nice upgrade from the factory speakers in my 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Mids and tweeters sound really good. Bass is decent. I have a subwoofer going in next so I don't need a lot of bass out of these. Overall a good value for the money.

Pros: Kicker brand, good quality at a reasonable price

Cons: none

Awesome speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

They are awesome. They were easy to install and they sound as if I had an amp and subwoofers in there. I do not need them cuz the sound is crisp and clear and bass is bumpin. Awesome

Pros: Bass treble everything good

Cons: No cons

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'll start off with an overview of my setup so you know what I am working with. I recently purchased a 04' Dakota quad cab and the stock speakers in it were awful. I was sick of having a vehicle with a poor stereo system so I decided to go "all-out" on this one. Yes, that is a very relative term. Anywho...

I purchased and installed a Kenwood eXcelon X799 head unit (from Crutchfield, of course) to be the brains behind the operation. I chose this unit because I had a Kenwood eXcelon in the past that served me well. Also, the 4v rca outputs are great for feeding the amp. I ran 14ga speaker wire to all 4 doors to send a decent signal to these Kickers. The powerhouse I have to drive the speakers is a Hifonics BRX-640.4, which puts out 80Wrms x4 @ 4O.

I did run these speakers briefly just through the Kenwood, which puts out 22Wrms x4. They sounded alright, but were a little lackluster after knowing I just dropped $140 on the two pairs. They were starved for power. I immediately went on craigslist and found the Hifonics amp for a great deal because I knew that I needed more power to do these speakers (and my ears) justice.

After wiring them up to the amp it made a world of difference! After playing with the gain, bass boost, HPF, EQ settings (Kenwood), etc.., they sound awesome. There is so much more body to the sound. They are very well-rounded. I was worried that I might still need a sub, but that is not the case! I'm used to a 10" L7 in my old vehicle, but these do(see below)

Pros: ^^^^ well enough to keep me from throwing that in the truck and taking up the back seat. Pros: Great bass response. Very well-rounded. I am very happy with them after spending $70/pair. Sound great with all types of music.

Cons: Ran out of characters for the review... lol, kidding aside.. PLEASE don't expect to get amazing top-notch sound quality out of them if you don't set them up correctly. If you buy a speaker that can handle 100Wrms then you should supply power somewhat close to the rating. If you hook them up to your factory head unit with no amp and crappy speaker wire then they will probably sound a little better than stock, but nowhere near as good as with an amp and proper head unit.

Good Quality

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A great improvemet over the stock speakers. I would recomend a head unit upgrade as the factory unit won't allow much adjustment to Eq to get the best sound for various of music. You won't need the Mounting rings if putting in a 99-06 GMC/Chevy pickup.

Pros: Good materials, expect longivity

Cons: none

Almost NEED an amp to drive em

Written By Jeremy, Oklahoma on Sunday, August 16, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

They're ok. I don't know why my Bose amp that's in my truck doesn't drive these at all. They're ok as long as I don't turn them up halfway. Which kind of stinks when I play a favorite song because the factory speakers I had did better in that regard.

Pros: Fit. Didn't even need the brackets that Crutchfield sent for the rear door speakers. Heck I couldn't have used them if I needed them because there was nothing to drill into because of the design of the door. Install took a whole 45 minutes. A tad bit more bass

Cons: You'll definitely want and need an amp to drive these. Very distorted when you get close to the middle of your volume knob. The little amount of bass gets really distorted when I turn it up a little. Checked my wiring there wasn't an issue.

Great Direct Replacement Fit Speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I don't know how anyone can say these speakers have no bass. They must either not have these mounted correctly, or are expecting them to sound like a subwoofer. Some people even say they don't sound good with a factory head unit, and that you must use an aftermarket unit and/or amplifier. To the contrary, not only did these speakers perfectly in my 2000 Suburban rear doors, without even needing to use the speaker adapter brackets, they sound great with my factory head unit and they're not even broken in yet. I installed my left rear door first, then got in the car and spent some time comparing the sound to the factory speaker still in my right door. I can affirm that the Kicker was louder right off the bat, so it must be more sensitive than the factory speaker. I ended up playing different kinds of music while adjusting volume, balance, fader, and the "bass" and "treble" controls in my factory head unit. I did this parked as well as while driving. I then had someone else drive while I sat in the back. Under ALL circumstances, the Kicker speaker sounded better than the factory speaker. After installing the right rear, I even turned up the volume to the point where my ears hurt and the factory front speakers and sub woofer distorted. The Kickers didn't break up at all and sounded great. I chose them specifically because their frequency response range went lower than other comparable speakers, and they didn't disappoint!
