Our take on the Kicker 40CS674

by John Pollard
Kicker

Why replace your factory speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

It's time for an upgrade

Upgrading the old factory speakers in your car will give you a huge bump in sound quality, and Kicker designed CS Series speakers to get your sound system rockin' without breaking the bank. You'll enjoy your music even more when you hear all the details that your muddy-sounding factory speakers couldn't begin to reproduce.

Built tough

Kicker's 40CS674 speaker set provides low-end from a tough 6-3/4" polypropylene woofer, with a polyester foam surround that will stay strong for years to come. The 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter takes care of the vocal and instrumental details that'll really bring your music to life. These speakers sound great powered by a factory radio or an aftermarket car stereo, and they'll really rock when connected to an external amplifier. Grilles are included.

Highlights:

  • 2-way 6-3/4" speakers (pair)
  • polypropylene woofer cone with polyester foam surround
  • 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter
  • power range: 2-100 watts RMS (300 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 40-20,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 90 dB
  • top-mount depth: 1-7/8"
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Not bad....expected better bass quality out of Kicker

Written By lkydog8469, charlotte nc on Thursday, April 17, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these along with a set of 6x9 kickers to match for my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. All around i would say the speakers sound great! Alot better than the stock Infinity Gold Speakers but coming from Kicker i am a little dissapointed in the bass quality. Could be the size but the bass isnt very crisp and more of a loud buzz. However coupled with the 6x9's and new dash tweeters they do sound good as long as you play with your settings, just cant max out your bass.
Pros:
Easy install Great overall sound
Cons:
Bass quality not impressive

Great speaker. Install was very easy. Speakers went right in my door. The speakers sounds great! The bass is Okay, I'm running a sub as well, so the bass on the door speakers doesn't matter much, these are very clear even at loud volumes, good little speaker. Would definitely recommend.
Pros:
Good sound. Easy installation. Loud.
Cons:
Bass is Okay.

Kicker 40CS674

Written By Hawkeye, Lemmon,SD on Tuesday, April 08, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm pleasantly surprised by the sound and quality of these low priced speakers. They are a noticeable improvement over my factory 2-way speakers. The clarity is much better, the overall sound is better, from low, to high volumes and everything in between. The bass is not as good as I expected from reading the reviews, but they do alright in that department. The tweeters are good, not too harsh. Mids are good. Overall, I'm quite pleased. I really want to add an amp, I'm certain more power will really bring these things to life.
Pros:
Great speaker for a low price. Good looking too. For dollar spent, you can't go wrong.
Cons:
The speaker terminals are a bit tricky to get connected, had to tweak them slightly with a pliers. Not much of a complaint!

Kicker speakers sound and install.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I truly enjoy the sound quality of the speakers and the easy install. It has made the new reciever that I purchased, sound's so much better than the factory equipment. Every product that I have ever purchased from Crutchfield has been the best. I just wish that a rear deck spearkers that Kicker makes would fit. I have an odd size mount in the rear deck on my model of car. All in all its a great sounding set of speakers as is the price. I am on fixed income and I recieved true quality from the amount that I spent. The technician that I talked with was very helpful and friendly. I will always shop at Crutchfield for the quaility products that I want. Thank You Crutchfield!
Pros:
Very easy to install, great sound and the price was fantastic. I recieved a lot more than what I paid for.
Cons:
I have none to speak or can think of any.

Price is good and sound is adequate

Written By DWWRX, Lexington Park, MD on Tuesday, April 01, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound is clear at lower volumes and at higher volumes is not bad but definitely need a sub with these puppies if you want base. Good for acoustic songs and other non-bass intensive type music. As others stated, the connectors on the speaker felt as if it was going to snap when attaching wire leads.
Pros:
Price. Decent performance(for the price). Crutchfield service is unrivaled.
Cons:
Weak connectors. Lows are weak.

Good Sounds - Easy Install

The speakers sound great. I replaced the original speakers (completely busted) in my 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The entire job took me about an hour to replace 2 front and 2 rear door speakers. The hardest part was drilling 12 new holes for the speakers, but overall was pretty easy even for a noob.
Pros:
- Easy Install -Cheap -Good Sound -Okay Bass
Cons:
-For the price no real cons

Decent, Affordable Speakers

Written By Lance7489, Lancaster, NY on Saturday, March 15, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these for my wife's 2014 Malibu, rear doors. While they sound very good, overall better than the factory speakers, a little disappointed in the low end. Maybe I was expecting too much but all the previous reviews stated very good bass output. Because of this, I'm having 2nd thoughts about a 2nd pair for the front doors.
Pros:
Good overall sound, reasonable price.
Cons:
Screws which came with speakers did not fit mounting adapter, so had to dig through all my hardware to find some. Not as good bass as I expected

Great Speakers

Written By Al O., Virginia Beach, VA on Friday, February 21, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speakers sound great. I have them in the back doors of my 2002 Tahoe. They are clear and have great highs and mids. The bass is respectable for the speaker size. I am currently running a Kenwood deck, with these speakers in the rear doors and another set of kickers that are components in the front doors. Nice sound but will be better when I add a 5 channel amp and a sub. These replaced the factory speakers and there is no comparison. They rock.
Pros:
Sound great now. Can take even more power. Will sound amazing after amp is added.
Cons:
At the very top end of the volume the bass can get a little distorted, but only at 27-30 on the volume. I rarely have it that loud.

These speakers offer excellent base. They replaced some speakers I previously upgraded, but I was never happy with the base. These Kickers are much better and less costly. These fit perfect in my Saturn Sky doors, no modifications needed. My wife actually says her ears are no longer bothered by the sound. She likes them alot and she is very picky. I already had a Kicker subwoofer. From now on it is Kickers all the way.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent speakers. Great mids and highs! If your looking for a lot of bass out of these, they are the wrong speakers for you. The small amount of bass they do give out is crisp and clear. No distortion at all, and I listen to my music very loud. These speakers will perfectly compliment a system that already has subwoofers. If you're looking for good highs/mids, these are the speakers you want.
Pros:
Loud and crisp sound.
Cons:
Price seems a little high for what they do, but kicker puts out a reliable product.

Hooked up to factory radio in front doors on 2013 Silverado. Cleaned up the sound for sure. no more distortion to mids from the bass. Can't really say how great they would be with a lot of power to them being they are still on the factory radio, but better than stock for sure.
Pros:
easy fit with adapters. cleaner sound than stock.

Awesome upgrade from OEM -- absolutely priced right
Pros:
Great sound - plays loud with no distortion
Cons:
A little bigger than the receiver in my doors so I had to shave the door receiver all the way around to make them fit. Once I did this, they fit great

Just installed these speakers into my 1997 Pontiac Firebird. These speakers were a direct plug and play. The most hassle I had was getting the door panels off. These sound amazing and I'll be ordering my back two speakers tomorrow.
Pros:
Direct plug and play, amazing sound, great for the price
Cons:
Have to be careful with the plugs on the back, ((not sure what their actually called)) they bend easily.

disappointed

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had high hopes for these, even though there were very few reviews when I got them for my kids 2001 Altima (few months ago). I see now there are mostly 5star reviews, but that hasn't been my experience. They're not terrible, but I was expecting more. They don't sound near as good as the similarly priced Kenwood 6x8s in my other kids car. The Kickers are running off a decent 4x50W Alpine amp, while the Kenwoods are running off a cheap Walmart Sony 4x50w amp. Both cars have a single 10" sub, (JL 10W3v3 in the other car, Infinity Perfect 10 in this one, both on decent amps, Rockford and Alpine). But try as I might with the gains, the x-overs, the levels and x-overs in the HU (JVC with 5v outs), I can't get a really nice full sound. they get loud, but it's too thin, no bass, and little mid - mostly loud treble. I would write it off as "shoulda got more expensive gear" but I know that a very similar setup, at similar prices is sounding a lot better in another car we own. It could be the amp, but I doubt it, Alpine makes a reasonable product, and it should take much power to drive 6.75" coaxials that are High Passed at 100hz. Ive tried running them straight through, no filter, and that doesn't help either. Maybe I'll try something different one day, see if it's the speakers. First thing I ever bought from Crutchfield that I haven't been delighted by.
Pros:
easy fit, reasonable price, (not that cheap though)
Cons:
thin sound, no bass little mids

Replaced my factory with these and what a difference! Amazingly good highs, and pretty good mids too. The bass isn't very deep, but it does have a pretty good kick to it. I'd recommend a subwoofer if you're looking for bass. You can crank these guys pretty loud and it'll sound pretty clean. Highly recommend them for the price and quality!

Much better sound over stock!

Written By Grayson, 21791 on Wednesday, September 04, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, these speakers sound great for the price. The stock speakers in my truck were pretty pathetic; making it sound like all of my music was ripped from a poor quality YouTube video. I believe I ordered the wrong speakers for my vehicle (I ordered the non-OnStar version even thought my vehicle has OnStar) but I figured there wasn't any difference- apparently there was. I had to modify the stock speaker mount quite a bit to accommodate these speakers.
Pros:
-Clear, crisp highs -More prominent mid-bass (my doors actually rattle now) -Great price
Cons:
-Didn't quite fit my Trailblazer, but that is probably my fault for ordering the non-OnStar version

better then stock

Written By colorado pickup, nj on Sunday, August 25, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced stock 07 chevy colorado pickup speakers of four. Rated a four, instead of a five star, because of the lack of any dampening effect. Mounted direct, vibrated metal door. No real complaint about it, only minor issue I can add. Speakers are so much better, so much more mid range, high tones, and base sound. Equalizer changes are really heard now! Bought these over the next cheaper level, because of the base frequency gain, believe it does matter. Never had this much base with stock speakers. Mounted right in place, with just four screw holes to drill, for screws. Have high end oem speakers in other vehicles, and this sound makes me wonder if the stock really are as good or equal to these kickers? Very very happy with kicker speakers.
Pros:
All sound levels, high/mid/base range come out to clear.
Cons:
vibration mounting on door metal, but my itty bitty view point. Vibration is not a noise issue, speaker vibrates full sound through door mount. Only noticable when volume is cranked up LOUD.

Just installed these in my 2008 Sierra Crew Cab and they sound great. The rear doors were an easy swap using the free bracket and connectors from Crutchfield. The front doors were more of a pain because of having to run the wires to the tweeters in the pillars. I used velcro to stick the crossover to the inner door skin at Crutchfield's suggestion and it worked perfectly.
Pros:
Great sound, no sub required.
Cons:
Had to make minor modifications to the brackets to make the 6.75 speakers fit but it was easily done.

I'm on my hour lunch break about to head back. I came home and the speakers were on my doorstep. I changed from my monkey suit, did a full stock speaker/these speakers swap, and am making a sandwich to head back to work jammin' out. These speakers are just what I was looking for. Perfect drop-in factory upgrade. The bass quality is outstanding. Definitely doesn't hit like a sole purpose sub, but makes the bass hit perfectly for what it is. I'm not looking for a city thumper, just something that is super clean and well rounded. I have 3way kenwoods in my front doors and now these in my rear. Perfect combo for tight all-around sounding system. Now to start saving for a headunit and small sub :)
Pros:
Easy to install

These speakers are precisely what I was looking for. They have enough low end to satisfy and crisp highs. Mostly listen to rock and metal so these fit the bill nicely. Am pushing these with just a kenwood deck so I am sure once I add an amp these will open up even more.

Right amount of bass and clean highs. No distortion period. Great sound simply using kenwood deck.

These are great 6 3/4" speakers. I bought 2 pair of these for my front and back doors in my 2013 Tundra Double Cab. I ended up returning one pair because we discovered the Kicker CS 6x9 speakers fit in the front door when you use the factory speaker bracket. The 6 3/4" speaker have a great range response and sound great in the rear doors. I'm running both the 6 3/4" and 6x9 speakers off the head unit with a Rockford 4 channel 300 watt amp. Extremely happy with the sound quality of these speakers. Installed them in my 2002 Silverado to replace my factory speakers and theres no comparison, these speakers "Kick".
Pros:
Clear and Crisp sound.
Cons:
Fasteners clips that are provided are low grade quality and when you try to bend them together the clips just break in half. Even thought this is not a big deal, it would still be nice to have clips that don't break in half.

nice sound

Written By tom, Folson, CA on Tuesday, June 25, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speaks sound very nice. They are better sounding than the upgraded premium sound system that the original owner of my car paid a couple extra thousand for when the car was new. These speakers have surprisingly good bass but like any speaker they have to be mounted solid with somewhat enclosed backspace. These speakers were not recommended for fitment in my my 2003 Infinity G35 but because of the size, price and reviews I wanted to give them I try. I was not disappointed because they realy do sound nice. I made a 1" thick MDF ring and mounted this between the door and the speaker. The speakers would have fit fine in the door by drilling one add'l hole but without the ring there would have been a 1" gap between the ring and the stock speaker grill. I now have these 6 3/4 speakers in the front doors and a 12" alpine sub in the trunk ; all power by a 4 channal S/O 75w/channel amp. All from Crutchfield scratch and dent for a total of about $225. The sound is unbelievable way better than I hoped for. My advise is never pay thousands for a new car premium optional sound system that may sound ok; when, for a few hundred $$ and a little work you can have a crutchfield system that sound phenomenal? great speakers....great company
Pros:
Price, sound quality
Cons:
Speaker covers could be considered ugly and may not fit the interior design of more refined cars. I used my stock covers with no problem

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound quality is awesome, it was simple to install especially with the Manual and master sheet sent from Crutchfield. The difference from the original speakers made of paper and the speakers from Kicker are worlds apart!
Pros:
sound quality, price, installation and compatability
