Our take on the Kicker 40CS684

by John Pollard
Kicker

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

It's time for an upgrade

Upgrading the old factory speakers in your car will give you a huge bump in sound quality, and Kicker designed CS Series speakers to get your sound system rockin' without breaking the bank. You'll enjoy your music even more when you hear all the details that your muddy-sounding factory speakers couldn't begin to reproduce.

Built tough

Kicker's 40CS684 speaker set provides low-end from a tough 6"x8" polypropylene woofer, with a polyester foam surround that will stay strong for years to come. The 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter takes care of the vocal and instrumental details that'll really bring your music to life. These speakers sound great powered by a factory radio or an aftermarket car stereo, and they'll really rock when connected to an external amplifier.

Cleaner sound than factory speakers!

Written By Scarpace, Austin, Texas on Friday, September 12, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speaker for the price. I am a big fan of Kicker from the 90's when their sub-woofers were the bomb! My Ford Excursion had the original Made in China factory speakers that were rattling and just sounded worn. I decided to give these Kicker speakers a try and YES... they sound much better all around. I am using 6 of these that fit right into the stock door panels and the mid panel between seat row two and three. Clean high's, good mid's, and noticeable lows. For the price, I think this is a great choice. I added the foam baffles as well!
Pros:
Clean high's, good mid's, and noticeable lows! Better than Factory speakers! No noticeable distortion at all levels! Sounds great with just 20 Watts per speaker!
Cons:
None

Excellent OEM replacements

Written By JamesW, St. Louis, MO on Thursday, August 28, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speakers for the money. Definitely better than the OEM speakers that came in the car. I was actually a little surprised at the OEM speakers because when I removed them they were actually made by Pioneer and said "Made for Mazda by Pioneer". I really expected better from Pioneer...but you can't expect OEM to be top quality when they're mainly concerned about the bottom line $$$. The audio from these is crisp, clear, good midrange, not so much on the low end (but maybe that's just the setup...no AMP - just powered from a Kenwood Navigation head unit and the speaker baffles might have something to do with it.). Very pleased as there is absolutely no distortion when really cranking the volume when the convertible top is down at highway speeds. Loud and clear enough to hear with the top down and passing a semi on the highway.
Pros:
Perfect fit. Super easy to install. Sound great. No distortion even at high levels with the convertible top down.
Cons:
None so far...other than they weren't free!

Good upgrade

Written By JoeS, DFW on Wednesday, August 27, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These units went in my sons 2003 Ranger 4 door truck. With the supplied pigtail we had them in at under an hour. This was a definite upgrade over the stock speaker, immediately noticed were that the highs came through much better with mids being fine. Since we had already installed a self contained sub/amp unit I wasn't concerned about the bass of these speakers, one look at them tells you lows are not where they shine. Overall for the price and the performance my son was very satisfied. On the side, I have in my F350 Boston Acoustics replacements for OEM and four Boston Acoustics tweeters mounted for and aft with a Pro Box sub behind my rear seat, for the money I wouldn't complain to have my sons setup at all.
Pros:
Definite upgrade
Cons:
None

Great upgrade for my trucks original factory speakers wired directly into my head unit with no amp and these still produce great sound very happy with my purchase.
Pros:
Great Sound, Easy Install
Cons:
Only thing I had to do was cut off the bracket edges on the sides because it lines up with my factory mounting hardware. Other than that no problems.

I am very pleased with the performance of the kicker 40CS684 speakers. The quality for the price is very good, however the best thing was the (free) wire harnesses that made instalation an absolute 5 minute breeze in my 2002 Ranger XLT super cab. It was fantastic no soldering, no sad electrical tape connections, just plug and play. Definet repeat customer.

The speakers were close to, but not quite a drop in fit. A little die grinder work to expand the oval about 1/16 inch and the fit nicely. The wiring harness connectors made the connections a breeze. The speakers give a very nice sound even with an old factory radio ......well worth the effort to remove the rear seat to get access to the rear deck.
Pros:
Price, fast delivery, sound quality
Cons:
none

Requires Amp - No Bass Either

Written By Dan, Danville, VA on Tuesday, May 06, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Decided to experiment and Installed these in my front door of a mazda. Installed Kenwood 6x9s in the back. Powered with a Kenwood headunit (no amp). Had to adjust the fader 4 notches toward the front before I could even hear the kickers over the kenwoods.

Left it like that for a month and eventually began to notice the tweeters distorting on the kickers at listening volume (kenwoods still doing fine). Called Crutchfield to replace and they said it was because the kickers were not getting enough juice and that they are really meant to be powered by and an amp - which explains why they are distorting at low volumes (because they are not getting enough power). Returning and swapping out for the MTX TDX52's.
Pros:
Sturdy design.
Cons:
RMS rating is lie. Requires minimum 60W RMS for decent power. No bass response at all. Factory speakers had put out more mid/bass.

Very good replacement for rear speakers. The shaker 500 is a modest sound system at best. This speaker helped the mids and highs. Not much in the lows, but that is what a sub woofer in the trunk is for. Overall I'm very happy with this purchase.

Paired these speakers with an Alpine deck (CDE143BT) installed in the front of my 01 Expedition, much better than factory. Bass and low tones sound good, get some distortion on high end sounds though, not sure what the issue is but haven't had a chance to trouble shoot it yet. Overall what I expected, was looking for an upgrade from stock and that's what I got.
Pros:
Easy install
Cons:
Speaker wire connections are flimsy be careful sliding connectors on tabs

Why did I wait so long??

Written By PeteW, Louisville, KY on Saturday, March 22, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed a new head unit from Crutchfield right away upon purchasing a new (used) 2002 Explorer Sport, but waited over 4 years to install speakers, I wasn't sure about taking door panels off. With the free master sheets I had my door apart in minutes, replaced both front door speakers in less than 45 minutes. The rears on mine were super easy too, and now I have great sound. Thanks Crutchfield!! Can't believe I listened to muddy factory speakers for 4 years. Used the wiring adapters, and door trim tool, from Crutchfield.
Pros:
Great sound, good bass for a 6 x 8 speaker. Perfect fit for Fords, wiring adapter makes install a breeze
Cons:
None

Nice Speakers

Written By GregM, Seville, OH on Wednesday, February 12, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers were suggested to me by a Crutchfield advisor to go with my Alpine CDE-235BT radio that was also suggested for my 2002 Toyota Tacoma P/U. Both were to replace stock items. It was noted but there was a lot of custom work on the plastic speaker holders to make these speakers install flat on the speaker holders. After cutting away the necessary plastic the speakers fit fine. It took me longer to install the speakers than it did the radio. The speakers sound good for both music and the blue tooth phone hook up with the radio. So far I am very happy with the sound. It is just a small basic truck but I like to listen to good sounding music and the stock system definitely was not that. These speakers make a huge difference.
Pros:
Nice crisp sound
Cons:
None for the speaker just the install. They did not just fit right into the door without modification to the stock speaker holder.

Perfect fit/replacement for 2005 mustang door. These speakers are a big difference over the stock door speakers. Just running off a high power alpine deck. They added a lot of clarity to the high range. I already have a sub and had replaced the rear deck speakers. The low end was already taken care of. I was hopping for a little more in the mid range. I have an amp I have not put in yet. maybe that will wake them up. I noticed some reviews say they don't put out as much bass as expected. I agree, the 6X8's I put in the rear deck produce more bass and punch. However, that could be do to the enclosure of the rear deck v.s. the door. Can't remember what speakers I put in the rear deck. The cars not hear at the moment.
Pros:
perfect fit. clean clear sound. You can get pretty loud without distortion as long as you adjust the bass down or filter out low frequencies
Cons:
maybe weak in the mid range, not sure yet, adding an amp to see any difference. Bass is not as good as others.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

IN car stereo speakers you do get what you pay for, and every once in a while you get a little more. These speakers hooked-up to a stock radio replaced 25 watt paper cone stock speakers. Asking non-component speakers to give bass, mid-range and be awesome tweeters too all in one unit is asking alot. At 69.00 a pair these speakers do a nice job at all three. I am thrilled at the improvement over the stock speakers. - Adjustments with the radio controls: cranking the bass muddies the mid-range, cranking the treble to compensate helps but its really just loud at that point. The plus is these speakers are rated at 225 watts. I can crank up the volume, bass, and treble to their max and these speakers do not distort, wow! My ears can't take much of that so I'll never know how long you could leave it cranked before they do crack - lets not find out ;0) - With a stock radio they perform nicely, with an amplifier I'm sure everything would be that much better. - at normal listening and a bit louder for your favorite songs these are really clean nice sounding speakers, reproducing cymbals and high-hat as cleanly as the vocals and guitar leads - adding just a touch of bass adds the lows you need to round out the sound (drums, bass) *but they will not produce (on their own) the bass kick most are looking for these days.
Pros:
They do everything they claim They handle being cranked up easily Simple install with Crutchfield adapters Sound is clean and crisp at normal listening and above levels OMG, their only sixty-nine dollars a pair - sweet!
Cons:
You just can't get them to perform like three hundred dollars a pair speakers - If thats what you want spend Three Hundred dollars

Easy Install / Adequate sound

Written By Stryder, Los Angeles on Wednesday, December 11, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Mostly easy install.. I needed to use my rotozip to remove some plastic housing in the door panels to get the new speakers to lay flat.. ..and splice the pigtails provided to the factory harness.. . other than than it was plug and play. The sound quality is good.. however I would have liked to adapt larger speakers for the rear pair to get more low end response.. the result is adequate for now.
Pros:
easy install, good price, fast shipping
Cons:
low frequency response ( Bass ) is moderate... and when the bass output is increased by the head unit... the sound gets muddy... really needs a sub or larger woofs in the rear..

Installed these speakers in my F-250. Sound much better than the original speakers. Sound good at low to moderate volumes, at high volumes the bass is distorted, will have to put in a sub in the near future so I can decrease the bass to the speakers.
Pros:
Easy install, much better then orginal speakers
Cons:
bass not as good as I was hoping from Kicker

Written By Chris M, Janesville, WI on Thursday, December 05, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got two sets of these speakers to replace the mushy-sounding stock speakers in my 2002 Mustang. They were simple enough to install, and the improvement over the original speakers was immediately noticeable. They have nice, crisp, mids and high range. There's not a lot of bass, but that's to be expected, and they sound great when paired with a decent subwoofer.
Pros:
Crisp mids and high range
Cons:
Not much bass on their own, but sounds great when paired with a subwoofer.

Bought these because I wanted better bass in my F150, Don't buy them! Minor upgrade from factory but, when it comes to bass, its a down grade.
Pros:
Decent sounding
Cons:
Bass sucks, pricey for performance

good solid efficient speakers

Written By ajef7885, IL on Sunday, September 22, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good sound from inexpensive speaker. Very efficient so Pioneer head unit is ample power to drive them. Bass is not as good or tight as I would have expected. I have had other 6x8's that had better response. Overall good match in rear doors of a Ford Focus sedan. A sub will be added to fill out bottom end.
Pros:
efficient, good midrange and upper frequency response.
Cons:
not as good bass response as some other speakers in this price range.

Great upgrade from stock speakers

Written By RB, Chamopaign, IL on Thursday, September 12, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great improvement over stock speakers. I paired these up with some 6x8 alpines and a clarion 4 channel amp. way stronger in the mid range over the stockers and I would say more than the alpines too. I wish they had some more low-end to them, I figure my 6x9's in my other vehicle have more bass on a similar set up.
Pros:
Install doesn't get any easier
Cons:
would be nice if they could do more with the lower frequencies.

Sounds quality is lacking

Written By timn1, Jacksonville fl on Monday, August 12, 2013

I bought these speakers based on several good reviews I've read. Sound quality is not very clear. The more I listen to them the more I hate them. They are slightly better than the factory speakers i had. But I wish I would have just spent a little more money and got a better quality speaker. Soon I will be ordering me a better set from Crutchfield. I've had three way or four way speakers in the past and I miss the clarity.
Pros:
A cheap upgrade from factory .
Cons:
Sound is lacking clarity and depth.

I put these in the rear of my 2002 Mustang GT to replace my stock speakers. (I put the component versions up front.) These things do an awesome job of filling the rear of the car with sound. Tight and crisp. They would easily be great in the front of my car, as well, if I had not wanted to do a component setup.
Pros:
Excellent upgrade
Cons:
Uh..........thinking............thinking............uh............

Kicker 40CS684

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used these speakers in an attempt to upgrade the sound of the original equipment speakers in my 2013 F150. I found the original equipment speakers quite lacking. I didn't want to spend a lot of money. I didn't think that I would need to in order to get a noticeable improvement over the stock speakers. Short version: I didn't feel that there was any improvement at all with these speakers, and, I have a very good ear for these things. I frequently notice many nuances that other people do not. My main issue with these speakers is that they are very "loose" sounding, slightly dark and with flabby lows. Very much like the stock ones minus the darkness. Sound is a subjective and some people seem to love kickers. However if you do I would suggest a higher grade ones.
Pros:
None
Cons:
"Loose" undefined lows. Slightly dark and inefficient.
