It's time for an upgrade

Upgrading the old factory speakers in your car will give you a huge bump in sound quality, and Kicker designed CS Series speakers to get your sound system rockin' without breaking the bank. You'll enjoy your music even more when you hear all the details that your muddy-sounding factory speakers couldn't begin to reproduce.

Built tough

Kicker's 40CS684 speaker set provides low-end from a tough 6"x8" polypropylene woofer, with a polyester foam surround that will stay strong for years to come. The 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter takes care of the vocal and instrumental details that'll really bring your music to life. These speakers sound great powered by a factory radio or an aftermarket car stereo, and they'll really rock when connected to an external amplifier.

Sound was definitely a lot clearer and way better sound quality than factory

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice speakers and sound really well! No matter how much you turn that volume up or how high you turn the bass up, I haven't had it muffle the words at all and i like to play my music loud with a lot of different bass tones and sounds. I recommend buying these for price and sound quality you pretty much stealing them! They are perfect starter speakers!

Pros: Great sound quality, doesn't muffle sound, easy to put in, built very nice, sturdy speakers feel like they were built with craftsmanship, and doesn't seem like build quality is cheap for price!

Cons: Can't name a single con for these speakers!

Great speakers for the money

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought 2 pair of these speakers to replace the front and rear speakers in my Crown Victoria (Note to Crutchfield: Ford did make Crown Victoria's in 2010 and 2011). Currently using the factory head unit, but will be replacing that soon. The factory speakers were very muddy, with poor lows and only decent highs. The Kickers are fantastic. Well defined highs and mids with better lows than I expected from a 6x8 speaker. Well worth the money. Note for anyone else installing speakers in the stock front door location of a 2010/11 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis. This data is not included in the Crutchfield speaker install steps as it appears that the front door speaker install procedure changed in the last 2-3 years of the panther chassis. The stock speaker has a hard plastic cover over it which is then screwed into a plastic adapter plate. The adapter plate is easy to remove. The hard plastic cover is part of the speaker and is not removable. The stock install does not use the standard 4 screw method. It only uses 3 screws, in non-standard locations. You will need to remove the adapter plate from the factory speaker and either find shorter screws for mounting to the new speaker or use nuts as spacers to make up for the depth of the hard plastic speaker cover. You can then use the 3 factory screws to attach the speaker/adapter plate to the door frame in the stock location.

Pros: Very good and clear highs and mids. Surprisingly good lows from such a small speaker.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the old factory speakers on the rear deck in my mustang. Nice highs, good low end sound. Ive got them run to a double din kenwood stero. They sound great up till about lvl 25 volume, then they start to get distorted. But thats better than the factory units. They are built like a mini subwoofer, so im sure they sound better when hooked to an amp. Good speakers for the price. Better ones are available, but your gonna pay more for those.

Pros: Good all around sound. Built tough.

Cons: Needs an amp to get the most out of them, but thats really not a con, just my problem lol.

I replaced the upgraded Sony system front speakers in my truck. When I took the old ones out I didn't think there would be much difference based on the look of the Sony speakers. Boy was I wrong the sound is so much better I get way more sound at a lot lower power output from the head unit. The install took 30 mins and the free wire connectors made it so easy. I am going to replace the back ones next. Totally worth it.

Pros: Great sound

Cons: none

Much better than the stock speakers

Written by: Ronald from Sacramento, CA on February 7, 2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the stock speakers (front and rear) in a 2006 F-150 SuperCrew. Perfect fit replacements. Much better than the stock speakers. Bass has more punch and is cleaner. Highs are actually present due to the separate tweeters (stock speakers have no tweeters). For the fronts, just pop the existing speaker cover panel off, replace the speakers (you have to fold up two speaker bracket tabs to get the new ones to fit), and replace the covers. Super easy. For the rears, follow the instructions provided by Crutchfield for removing the door panels but you don't actually have to disconnect the door lock cable. Just roll down the window and use a bungie to hold the panel up (looped around the top of the door frame) or have someone hold it up for a few minutes. No folding of mounting tabs required for rear speaker installation. Then re-install the door panel on the door. My 12-year old did much of the speaker installation work to help out - it isn't that difficult! Using the speaker wire adapters by Crutchfield made installation a snap. A friend listened to them after installation and immediately went to order the same speakers for his truck. I replaced the stock stereo with a Pioneer double-DIN unit a while back when the CD player died and it drives these just fine with no amp. Recommended!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to upgrade the factory speakers in my daily driver because let's face it, the 15 year old factory speakers had seen way better days. I bought two pairs of these Kickers and after the install (which was super simple) I was blown away by the clarity in sound. All my music sounds great (especially rock). I do agree with some of the other reviews about not enough bass, but hey, these are 6x8 mids, not subs. I do have an aftermarket JVC receiver (also from Crutchfield) and that also makes a huge difference. These are a great buy for anyone looking at upgrading their worn out speakers.

Pros: Value; sound clarity; and as always, the instructions and adapters you provide are awesome

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these speakers to replace factory rear door speakers in a Ford Fusion. I've powering them with a Sony WX-GT90BT head unit. Although I haven't personally heard a lot of other brand speakers in identical applications, I can't imagine how a 6 x 8 2 way speaker could sound better. I have the Kicker KS series component speakers in front doors clarity and imaging and these in the back doors to provide volume and bass. These speakers had everything I was looking for; full size 6 x 8, rated 75 watts, and polypropylene woofer. I am impressed with how much punch with speakers have with only 18 watts running to them. These Kickers are an Excellent replacement for factory speakers! I highly recommend them.

Pros: Price. Sound. Quality.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these speakers as a replacement for the stock base speakers in my mustang. Every one in different forums said you would notice a huge difference in sound when replacing stock speakers with any aftermarket speaker. Not true for me, these sounded almost identical to my stocks. There not bad, just didn't notice a difference. Not sure if it's because I'm still running the stock stereo (more than likely) but honestly if you don't plan on changing out your stereo like me don't waste your money changing speakers. I might eventually add an amp to them to see if it makes a difference. I gave it a 3 star review because the speaker itself isn't bad but it isn't great. I honestly was expecting more when I turned the stereo on.

Pros: Easy installation, came with free speaker wire harness that made installation easy.

Cons: Did not notice a difference in sound from base speakers to these.

These were a vast improvement over the factory speakers in my F150. Great clarity and detail in the highs and mids. The bass response is very good considering they are 6x8's. I have them with a new JVC HU w/ 22watts RMS and it's plenty loud with overall great performance. The detail was so good it sounds almost close to having components but again consider I am coming from stock. I imagine these with a hidden small sub would a great setup for those looking for very good daily listening. The sub's next on the item list...

Pros: Clarity, detail, mid/bass response.

Cons: None yet.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent speakers for the money. Noticeable improvement over factory. This was my 4th install and was by far the fastest ever. Very clear instructions supplied by Crutchfield. Took about an hour to put 2 pairs into my '04 F150 Super Cab. Glad I did the deal.

Pros: Excellent mid-range and upper range: vocals, horns, strings, chimes, etc. A lot of speaker for the money.

Cons: A little soft on bass but plenty good for me--I really don't need a lot of low end, I prefer mid- & upper range and these speakers have it. Had to bend a couple of tabs to fit the front doors but that was very minor.

Just buy them.

Replaced the stock speakers in my 97 Ranger with these. Already had a Sony head unit but lived with the stock speakers for almost 2 years. What a difference in sound! Not much of an increase in bass but that could be deceiving because of the improvement in mid-range and treble. I hear sounds in my music that I never heard before, all without an amp. I choose these because of the reviews and I wasn't disappointed.

Pros: Great sound, easy install with the provided harness and vehicle specific instructions.

Cons: None.

Good improvement over stock speakers feel so much better build quality wise. First set ok Kicker speakers I've ever had an have to say I'm impressed. I still have the stock head unit but can still tell worlds of difference but could really benefit from more power via better head unit or 4-channel amp. With the power I'm getting I get zero distortion when cranked up over half way all in all I'm a satisfied customer.

Pros: Price, easy installation, good sound, good quality.

With the install instructions from Crutchfield, it took me about 4 hours to install since this was my first time. There might be better speakers out there, but these speakers sounded great. I paired these speakers with a new Pioneer Bluetooth receiver and haven't looked back. In fact, I've been amazed at the detail and clarity of the music (and phone calls) these speakers make. Cymbals crash and ring clearly, drums thunder like they should and I've even noticed hearing singers' breathing between lines. Awesome!

Pros: Full range of clear, fat sound which doesn't shrink or become muddled at high volume (they're about to blow the panels off my doors!).

There are the stock replacements for my Expedition. Almost perfect drop in replacement. Had to bend 2 mounding tabs out of the way. No biggie. At first instal I was like "meh, better than stock" These Need break in time. Break in= playing at half volume for about a week to relax the suspension) Very stiff spiders. After about a week the sound warms up and the bass kicks in. Sounds great running off of my head unit. They are shaking my mirrors at 14watts. You want more? Throw a 50-100 watt amp on them (clean power= no clipping, and a highpass filter is a must for that much power) These are fine for stock replacement/entry level mids.

Pros: Sharp highs. Clear voice. Good midbass.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Upgrading front doors of 2002 Ford F350 XLT with stock head unit. As compared to the stock speakers (which I left in back), these have bright tweeters, and tight bass. Stock appears to have better bass than these, but it is muddy. Honestly, stock speakers I could not hear ANY symbols...plop these units in and holy cow...there they are again!!! These may perform better at the low end with an upgraded head unit and an amp, but with stock head unit, don't expect huge improvements in bass. Overall, these speakers are clearly geared toward bright highs, and tight bass, but are lacking the mid-range...which can be OK, especially if you tend to boost those two ranges anyhow.

Pros: Clear tweeter, tight (albeit limited) bass, great price, perfect fit!

Cons: Limited Bass, tweeter little on the bright side, no midrange.

01This is my first acquaintance with Kicker. I was told I would not be disappointed. I replaced the OEM ones on my 2012 Ford Fusion. I was shocked to see the ones that came with the car. Even though they worked decent, I was in the mood to spend money and get the most out of the XM and cd player. I have the bass and treble set at mid, and even then they just blow me out of the car. With the door speakers I can feel the air moving on my legs as I crank up Ms Turner and her Simply the Best. The bass and treble are outstanding and with this upgrade I am sure to knock my head on the steering wheel. I have no reason to default on the Kickers and will be very unhappy when I sell this car.

Pros: easy to install great bass and treble.

I bought these speakers to replace the factory speakers in my 2014 F150,stock speakers were lacking, poor clarity and no bass.I installed the kickers and the clarity was better, but still lacking, and zero improvement in bass.I am using the stock HU,don't want to give up Sync,I don't know that an amp would make them any better. If you are looking to upgrade,I would research more.

Pros: Direct replacement for factory speakers, easy to install with the supplied harness.

Cons: a marginal upgrade over the factory speakers,no bass improvement over factory speakers.clarity is so so.

Crutchfield response on October 28, 2014 That's a common reaction when replacing car speakers. What you can expect to hear from a new speaker is better clarity and definition in the mids and highs. So your music will sound better and more lifelike, but you might not hear more bass. The only way to get more bass is to add more power, and if you want to keep the factory radio, that means adding an amplifier. A small (40-50 watts), 4-channel amp can supply twice the power of an aftermarket stereo and three or four times the power of the typical factory radio. That'll improve all the sound, but you'll especially hear it in the fullness of the bass.

Great speaker for the price. I am a big fan of Kicker from the 90's when their sub-woofers were the bomb! My Ford Excursion had the original Made in China factory speakers that were rattling and just sounded worn. I decided to give these Kicker speakers a try and YES... they sound much better all around. I am using 6 of these that fit right into the stock door panels and the mid panel between seat row two and three. Clean high's, good mid's, and noticeable lows. Great speakers for the money. Definitely better than the OEM speakers that came in the car. I was actually a little surprised at the OEM speakers because when I removed them they were actually made by Pioneer and said "Made for Mazda by Pioneer". I really expected better from Pioneer...but you can't expect OEM to be top quality when they're mainly concerned about the bottom line $$$. The audio from these is crisp, clear, good midrange, not so much on the low end (but maybe that's just the setup...no AMP - just powered from a Kenwood Navigation head unit and the speaker baffles might have something to do with it.). Very pleased as there is absolutely no distortion when really cranking the volume when the convertible top is down at highway speeds. Loud and clear enough to hear with the top down and passing a semi on the highway.

Pros: Perfect fit. Super easy to install. Sound great. No distortion even at high levels with the convertible top down.

This was a definite upgrade over the stock speaker, immediately noticed were that the highs came through much better with mids being fine. Overall for the price and the performance my son was very satisfied. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Decided to experiment and Installed these in my front door of a mazda. Installed Kenwood 6x9s in the back. Powered with a Kenwood headunit (no amp). Had to adjust the fader 4 notches toward the front before I could even hear the kickers over the kenwoods. Left it like that for a month and eventually began to notice the tweeters distorting on the kickers at listening volume (kenwoods still doing fine). Called Crutchfield to replace and they said it was because the kickers were not getting enough juice and that they are really meant to be powered by and an amp - which explains why they are distorting at low volumes (because they are not getting enough power). Returning and swapping out for the MTX TDX52's.

Pros: Sturdy design.

Cons: RMS rating is lie. Requires minimum 60W RMS for decent power. No bass response at all. Factory speakers had put out more mid/bass.

2002 Ford Explorer Sport
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed a new head unit from Crutchfield right away upon purchasing a new (used) 2002 Explorer Sport, but waited over 4 years to install speakers, I wasn't sure about taking door panels off. With the free master sheets I had my door apart in minutes, replaced both front door speakers in less than 45 minutes. The rears on mine were super easy too, and now I have great sound. Thanks Crutchfield!! Can't believe I listened to muddy factory speakers for 4 years. Used the wiring adapters, and door trim tool, from Crutchfield.

Pros: Great sound, good bass for a 6 x 8 speaker. Perfect fit for Fords, wiring adapter makes install a breeze

Cons: None

Nice Speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers were suggested to me by a Crutchfield advisor to go with my Alpine CDE-235BT radio that was also suggested for my 2002 Toyota Tacoma P/U. Both were to replace stock items. It was noted but there was a lot of custom work on the plastic speaker holders to make these speakers install flat on the speaker holders. After cutting away the necessary plastic the speakers fit fine. It took me longer to install the speakers than it did the radio. The speakers sound good for both music and the blue tooth phone hook up with the radio. So far I am very happy with the sound. It is just a small basic truck but I like to listen to good sounding music and the stock system definitely was not that. These speakers make a huge difference.

Pros: Nice crisp sound

Cons: None for the speaker just the install. They did not just fit right into the door without modification to the stock speaker holder.

These Kicker speakers are several steps up from your plain, horrible sounding factory speakers that Ford uses. The quality is great; as expected from Kicker. The sound is much better than the factories.

Pros: Exact factory fit, great quality, good sound.

2005 Ford Mustang
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Perfect fit/replacement for 2005 mustang door. These speakers are a big difference over the stock door speakers. Just running off a high power alpine deck. They added a lot of clarity to the high range. I already have a sub and had replaced the rear deck speakers. The low end was already taken care of. I was hopping for a little more in the mid range. I have an amp I have not put in yet. maybe that will wake them up. I noticed some reviews say they don't put out as much bass as expected. I agree, the 6X8's I put in the rear deck produce more bass and punch. However, that could be do to the enclosure of the rear deck v.s. the door. Can't remember what speakers I put in the rear deck. The cars not hear at the moment.

Pros: perfect fit. clean clear sound. You can get pretty loud without distortion as long as you adjust the bass down or filter out low frequencies

Cons: maybe weak in the mid range, not sure yet, adding an amp to see any difference. Bass is not as good as others.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

IN car stereo speakers you do get what you pay for, and every once in a while you get a little more. These speakers hooked-up to a stock radio replaced 25 watt paper cone stock speakers. Asking non-component speakers to give bass, mid-range and be awesome tweeters too all in one unit is asking alot. At 69.00 a pair these speakers do a nice job at all three. I am thrilled at the improvement over the stock speakers. - Adjustments with the radio controls: cranking the bass muddies the mid-range, cranking the treble to compensate helps but its really just loud at that point. The plus is these speakers are rated at 225 watts. I can crank up the volume, bass, and treble to their max and these speakers do not distort, wow! My ears can't take much of that so I'll never know how long you could leave it cranked before they do crack - lets not find out ;0) - With a stock radio they perform nicely, with an amplifier I'm sure everything would be that much better. - at normal listening and a bit louder for your favorite songs these are really clean nice sounding speakers, reproducing cymbals and high-hat as cleanly as the vocals and guitar leads - adding just a touch of bass adds the lows you need to round out the sound (drums, bass) *but they will not produce (on their own) the bass kick most are looking for these days.

Pros: They do everything they claim They handle being cranked up easily Simple install with Crutchfield adapters Sound is clean and crisp at normal listening and above levels OMG, their only sixty-nine dollars a pair - sweet!

Cons: You just can't get them to perform like three hundred dollars a pair speakers - If thats what you want spend Three Hundred dollars

I installed 4 of these 6x8 in my sons old pickup along with a new head unit and they sound fantasic! An amazing difference form the old factory paper cone nightmares that he had. He now has some bass and the highs and mids are MUCH improved over the factory speakers. Installation was simple and straightforward and the factory connectors provided by Crutchfield worked well.

Easy Install / Adequate sound

Written by: Stryder from Los Angeles on December 11, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Mostly easy install.. I needed to use my rotozip to remove some plastic housing in the door panels to get the new speakers to lay flat.. ..and splice the pigtails provided to the factory harness.. . other than than it was plug and play. The sound quality is good.. however I would have liked to adapt larger speakers for the rear pair to get more low end response.. the result is adequate for now.

Pros: easy install, good price, fast shipping

Cons: low frequency response ( Bass ) is moderate... and when the bass output is increased by the head unit... the sound gets muddy... really needs a sub or larger woofs in the rear..

Installed these speakers in my F-250. Sound much better than the original speakers. Sound good at low to moderate volumes, at high volumes the bass is distorted, will have to put in a sub in the near future so I can decrease the bass to the speakers.

Pros: Easy install, much better then orginal speakers

Cons: bass not as good as I was hoping from Kicker

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got two sets of these speakers to replace the mushy-sounding stock speakers in my 2002 Mustang. They were simple enough to install, and the improvement over the original speakers was immediately noticeable. They have nice, crisp, mids and high range. There's not a lot of bass, but that's to be expected, and they sound great when paired with a decent subwoofer.

Pros: Crisp mids and high range

Cons: Not much bass on their own, but sounds great when paired with a subwoofer.

Good sound from inexpensive speaker. Very efficient so Pioneer head unit is ample power to drive them. Bass is not as good or tight as I would have expected. I have had other 6x8's that had better response. Overall good match in rear doors of a Ford Focus sedan. A sub will be added to fill out bottom end.

Pros: efficient, good midrange and upper frequency response.

Cons: not as good bass response as some other speakers in this price range.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great improvement over stock speakers. I paired these up with some 6x8 alpines and a clarion 4 channel amp. way stronger in the mid range over the stockers and I would say more than the alpines too. I wish they had some more low-end to them, I figure my 6x9's in my other vehicle have more bass on a similar set up.

Pros: Install doesn't get any easier

Cons: would be nice if they could do more with the lower frequencies.

Sounds quality is lacking

Written by: timn1 from Jacksonville fl on August 12, 2013

I bought these speakers based on several good reviews I've read. Sound quality is not very clear. The more I listen to them the more I hate them. They are slightly better than the factory speakers i had. But I wish I would have just spent a little more money and got a better quality speaker. Soon I will be ordering me a better set from Crutchfield. I've had three way or four way speakers in the past and I miss the clarity.
