Kicker 40CS684

It's time for an upgrade

Upgrading the old factory speakers in your car will give you a huge bump in sound quality, and Kicker designed CS Series speakers to get your sound system rockin' without breaking the bank. You'll enjoy your music even more when you hear all the details that your muddy-sounding factory speakers couldn't begin to reproduce.

Built tough

Kicker's 40CS684 speaker set provides low-end from a tough 6"x8" polypropylene woofer, with a polyester foam surround that will stay strong for years to come. The 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter takes care of the vocal and instrumental details that'll really bring your music to life. These speakers sound great powered by a factory radio or an aftermarket car stereo, and they'll really rock when connected to an external amplifier.

Product Highlights:

  • 2-way 6"x8" speakers (pair)
  • polypropylene woofer cone with polyester foam surround
  • 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter
  • power range: 2-75 watts RMS (225 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 45-20,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 90 dB
  • top-mount depth: 2-5/16"
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in my 2014 f 150. Wow i was pretty impressed, the clarity is better the sound is louder. Took about 20 minutes to install both front doors. I just have them powered by my factory deck so no amp and its a world of difference.

Pros: Everything

Cons: None

This speaker is more like it! Of the three sets I ordered based on recommendation from Crutchfield this one hit it on the money. I used this as a 2nd row option in the doors and it does not disappoint "the front components did". Hits the range I was looking for quite well and sound quality is there.

Pros: Sound quality is great and fit the need perfectly.

Cons: none on this one. Im happy with it

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought a Kenwood x498 and decided it was time to up grade my factory speakers and WOW, what a difference. I didn't know what I was missing out. I know my way around my truck so I had these speakers in in less that a half an hour. I used the factory screws and the harness' made the wiring a snap. I may have to upgrade the back speakers now. These speakers sound amazing and they are perfect for what I wanted and that was a great sound. I'd buy them again. Crutchfield is a great company. The shipping is fast and they are there for you the whole way. I won't shop anywhere else. A+++

Ithe sound quality compared to the factory speakers is no comparison. Clarity in each range of sound, and power up to maximum volume.

Pros: Installation was super easy, actually the Cruthfield installation sheet clearly walks you through the process.

Cons: Wish they had a little more Bass, might need to add a sub and amplifier.

Major Improvement!

Written By JHF150, California on Thursday, June 11, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These were a vast improvement over the factory speakers in my F150. Great clarity and detail in the highs and mids. The bass response is very good considering they are 6x8's. I have them with a new JVC HU w/ 22watts RMS and it's plenty loud with overall great performance. The detail was so good it sounds almost close to having components but again consider I am coming from stock. I imagine these with a hidden small sub would a great setup for those looking for very good daily listening. The sub's next on the item list...

Pros: Clarity, detail, mid/bass response.

Cons: None yet.

Great speaker for the $$

Written By Steve F., Iowa on Wednesday, June 03, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent speakers for the money. Noticeable improvement over factory. This was my 4th install and was by far the fastest ever. Very clear instructions supplied by Crutchfield. Took about an hour to put 2 pairs into my '04 F150 Super Cab. Glad I did the deal.

Pros: Excellent mid-range and upper range: vocals, horns, strings, chimes, etc. A lot of speaker for the money.

Cons: A little soft on bass but plenty good for me--I really don't need a lot of low end, I prefer mid- & upper range and these speakers have it. Had to bend a couple of tabs to fit the front doors but that was very minor.

Just buy them.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the stock speakers in my 97 Ranger with these. Already had a Sony head unit but lived with the stock speakers for almost 2 years. What a difference in sound! Not much of an increase in bass but that could be deceiving because of the improvement in mid-range and treble. I hear sounds in my music that I never heard before, all without an amp. I choose these because of the reviews and I wasn't disappointed.

Pros: Great sound, easy install with the provided harness and vehicle specific instructions.

Cons: None.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good improvement over stock speakers feel so much better build quality wise. First set ok Kicker speakers I've ever had an have to say I'm impressed. I still have the stock head unit but can still tell worlds of difference but could really benefit from more power via better head unit or 4-channel amp. With the power I'm getting I get zero distortion when cranked up over half way all in all I'm a satisfied customer.

Pros: Price, easy installation, good sound, good quality.

Cons: None as of yet.

Happy with the speakers

Written By Arnold, Nevada on Thursday, May 21, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the speakers to replace it my Toyota Tacoma factory speakers and was very happy with the purchase. I paired it with a Pioneer AVH-X3600 BHS and they both worked great together. With the install instructions from Crutchfield, it took me about 4 hours to install since this was my first time. There might be better speakers out there, but these speakers sounded great. I would like to thank Chad for the recommendation.

Pros: good sound, and value.

Cons: Nothing to report.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I paired these speakers with a new Pioneer Bluetooth receiver and haven't looked back. In fact, I've been amazed at the detail and clarity of the music (and phone calls) these speakers make. Cymbals crash and ring clearly, drums thunder like they should and I've even noticed hearing singers' breathing between lines. Awesome!

Pros: Full range of clear, fat sound which doesn't shrink or become muddled at high volume (they're about to blow the panels off my doors!).

Cons: "Cons"? I can't think of one.

Initially was a good speaker and replacement to my front stock 2011 mustang speakers. Fit well and the sound was better than stock. However, one month out of the warranty period the driver's side speaker begins to blow out. Decent, speaker overall, but if you take the risk, get an extended warranty.

06 Expedition

Written By LD, Florida on Wednesday, April 01, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There are the stock replacements for my Expedition. Almost perfect drop in replacement. Had to bend 2 mounding tabs out of the way. No biggie. At first instal I was like "meh, better than stock" These Need break in time. Break in= playing at half volume for about a week to relax the suspension) Very stiff spiders. After about a week the sound warms up and the bass kicks in. Sounds great running off of my head unit. They are shaking my mirrors at 14watts. You want more? Throw a 50-100 watt amp on them (clean power= no clipping, and a highpass filter is a must for that much power) These are fine for stock replacement/entry level mids.

Pros: Sharp highs. Clear voice. Good midbass.

Cons: None yet.

Bright highs, OK Bass, No midrange

Written By Lee, Denver, Colorado on Friday, March 20, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Upgrading front doors of 2002 Ford F350 XLT with stock head unit. As compared to the stock speakers (which I left in back), these have bright tweeters, and tight bass. Stock appears to have better bass than these, but it is muddy. Honestly, stock speakers I could not hear ANY symbols...plop these units in and holy cow...there they are again!!! These may perform better at the low end with an upgraded head unit and an amp, but with stock head unit, don't expect huge improvements in bass. Overall, these speakers are clearly geared toward bright highs, and tight bass, but are lacking the mid-range...which can be OK, especially if you tend to boost those two ranges anyhow.

Pros: Clear tweeter, tight (albeit limited) bass, great price, perfect fit!

Cons: Limited Bass, tweeter little on the bright side, no midrange.

I found the whole process to be great, from ordering to install it was great and I called to make sure I had all the items. The connectors that where included fit perfectly along with the actual speakers. The kicker speakers I had ordered where perfect they sound amazing. It wasn't hard to install myself, because crutchfield sent me instruction on how to remove the door panels and they where easy to follow! Overall I had a great experience on buying my first speakers ever with this company.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

01This is my first acquaintance with Kicker. I was told I would not be disappointed. I replaced the OEM ones on my 2012 Ford Fusion. I was shocked to see the ones that came with the car. Even though they worked decent, I was in the mood to spend money and get the most out of the XM and cd player. I have the bass and treble set at mid, and even then they just blow me out of the car. With the door speakers I can feel the air moving on my legs as I crank up Ms Turner and her Simply the Best. The bass and treble are outstanding and with this upgrade I am sure to knock my head on the steering wheel. I have no reason to default on the Kickers and will be very unhappy when I sell this car.

Pros: easy to install great bass and treble.

Cons: none at this time

These speakers are very well balanced for 2 way speakers. The JVC head unit I am using to power them is more than adequate. The speaker wiring harness included was a perfect fit also. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these speakers to replace the "cracking" factory 6x8's that are in the rear doors my 08 Ford Fusion. I wasn't expecting anything dramatic since I was just replacing the rear door speakers with the audiophile system. I must say the difference is noticeable! Tighter bass and crisper highs! I will be orordering two more of these speakers for the front doors!

Pros: Quality workmanship, exact fit, simple install.

Cons: N/A

Marginal Upgrade

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers to replace the factory speakers in my 2014 F150,stock speakers were lacking, poor clarity and no bass.I installed the kickers and the clarity was better, but still lacking, and zero improvement in bass.I am using the stock HU,don't want to give up Sync,I don't know that an amp would make them any better. If you are looking to upgrade,I would research more.

Pros: Direct replacement for factory speakers, easy to install with the supplied harness.

Cons: a marginal upgrade over the factory speakers,no bass improvement over factory speakers.clarity is so so.

Crutchfield response on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 That's a common reaction when replacing car speakers. What you can expect to hear from a new speaker is better clarity and definition in the mids and highs. So your music will sound better and more lifelike, but you might not hear more bass. The only way to get more bass is to add more power, and if you want to keep the factory radio, that means adding an amplifier. A small (40-50 watts), 4-channel amp can supply twice the power of an aftermarket stereo and three or four times the power of the typical factory radio. That'll improve all the sound, but you'll especially hear it in the fullness of the bass.

Cleaner sound than factory speakers!

Written By Scarpace, Austin, Texas on Friday, September 12, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speaker for the price. I am a big fan of Kicker from the 90's when their sub-woofers were the bomb! My Ford Excursion had the original Made in China factory speakers that were rattling and just sounded worn. I decided to give these Kicker speakers a try and YES... they sound much better all around. I am using 6 of these that fit right into the stock door panels and the mid panel between seat row two and three. Clean high's, good mid's, and noticeable lows. For the price, I think this is a great choice. I added the foam baffles as well!

Pros: Clean high's, good mid's, and noticeable lows! Better than Factory speakers! No noticeable distortion at all levels! Sounds great with just 20 Watts per speaker!

Cons: None

Excellent OEM replacements

Written By JamesW, St. Louis, MO on Thursday, August 28, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speakers for the money. Definitely better than the OEM speakers that came in the car. I was actually a little surprised at the OEM speakers because when I removed them they were actually made by Pioneer and said "Made for Mazda by Pioneer". I really expected better from Pioneer...but you can't expect OEM to be top quality when they're mainly concerned about the bottom line $$$. The audio from these is crisp, clear, good midrange, not so much on the low end (but maybe that's just the AMP - just powered from a Kenwood Navigation head unit and the speaker baffles might have something to do with it.). Very pleased as there is absolutely no distortion when really cranking the volume when the convertible top is down at highway speeds. Loud and clear enough to hear with the top down and passing a semi on the highway.

Pros: Perfect fit. Super easy to install. Sound great. No distortion even at high levels with the convertible top down.

Cons: None so far...other than they weren't free!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These units went in my sons 2003 Ranger 4 door truck. With the supplied pigtail we had them in at under an hour. This was a definite upgrade over the stock speaker, immediately noticed were that the highs came through much better with mids being fine. Since we had already installed a self contained sub/amp unit I wasn't concerned about the bass of these speakers, one look at them tells you lows are not where they shine. Overall for the price and the performance my son was very satisfied. On the side, I have in my F350 Boston Acoustics replacements for OEM and four Boston Acoustics tweeters mounted for and aft with a Pro Box sub behind my rear seat, for the money I wouldn't complain to have my sons setup at all.

Great upgrade for my trucks original factory speakers wired directly into my head unit with no amp and these still produce great sound very happy with my purchase.

Pros: Great Sound, Easy Install

Cons: Only thing I had to do was cut off the bracket edges on the sides because it lines up with my factory mounting hardware. Other than that no problems.

Great addition to the stock stereo. Highs and lows sound like they should. Stock speakers were 25 watt mac.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very pleased with the performance of the kicker 40CS684 speakers. The quality for the price is very good, however the best thing was the (free) wire harnesses that made instalation an absolute 5 minute breeze in my 2002 Ranger XLT super cab. It was fantastic no soldering, no sad electrical tape connections, just plug and play. Definet repeat customer.

Excellent purchase

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speakers were close to, but not quite a drop in fit. A little die grinder work to expand the oval about 1/16 inch and the fit nicely. The wiring harness connectors made the connections a breeze. The speakers give a very nice sound even with an old factory radio ......well worth the effort to remove the rear seat to get access to the rear deck.

Pros: Price, fast delivery, sound quality

Cons: none

Requires Amp - No Bass Either

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Decided to experiment and Installed these in my front door of a mazda. Installed Kenwood 6x9s in the back. Powered with a Kenwood headunit (no amp). Had to adjust the fader 4 notches toward the front before I could even hear the kickers over the kenwoods.

Left it like that for a month and eventually began to notice the tweeters distorting on the kickers at listening volume (kenwoods still doing fine). Called Crutchfield to replace and they said it was because the kickers were not getting enough juice and that they are really meant to be powered by and an amp - which explains why they are distorting at low volumes (because they are not getting enough power). Returning and swapping out for the MTX TDX52's.

Pros: Sturdy design.

Cons: RMS rating is lie. Requires minimum 60W RMS for decent power. No bass response at all. Factory speakers had put out more mid/bass.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good replacement for rear speakers. The shaker 500 is a modest sound system at best. This speaker helped the mids and highs. Not much in the lows, but that is what a sub woofer in the trunk is for. Overall I'm very happy with this purchase.

Pros: Very good mids and highs. Excellent replacement for shaker 500.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Paired these speakers with an Alpine deck (CDE143BT) installed in the front of my 01 Expedition, much better than factory. Bass and low tones sound good, get some distortion on high end sounds though, not sure what the issue is but haven't had a chance to trouble shoot it yet. Overall what I expected, was looking for an upgrade from stock and that's what I got.

Pros: Easy install

Cons: Speaker wire connections are flimsy be careful sliding connectors on tabs

Why did I wait so long??

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed a new head unit from Crutchfield right away upon purchasing a new (used) 2002 Explorer Sport, but waited over 4 years to install speakers, I wasn't sure about taking door panels off. With the free master sheets I had my door apart in minutes, replaced both front door speakers in less than 45 minutes. The rears on mine were super easy too, and now I have great sound. Thanks Crutchfield!! Can't believe I listened to muddy factory speakers for 4 years. Used the wiring adapters, and door trim tool, from Crutchfield.

Pros: Great sound, good bass for a 6 x 8 speaker. Perfect fit for Fords, wiring adapter makes install a breeze

Cons: None
