It's time for an upgrade

Upgrading the old factory speakers in your car will give you a huge bump in sound quality, and Kicker designed CS Series speakers to get your sound system rockin' without breaking the bank. You'll enjoy your music even more when you hear all the details that your muddy-sounding factory speakers couldn't begin to reproduce.

Bring on the treble and the bass

Kicker's 40CSS654 component speaker set provides low end from a tough 6-1/2" polypropylene woofer, with a polyester foam surround that will stay strong for years to come. The separate 3/4" titanium dome tweeter takes care of the vocal and instrumental details that'll really bring your music to life. The outboard crossover network allows you to pick from three different tweeter level settings so you'll get balanced sound wherever you're sitting. Grilles are included.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Great product that produces a great sound and look to the car

They fit seemlessly in my vehicle and make a major difference in sound. I have them connected to a 4 channel JL Audio amp. The speakers give clear highs and lows simultaneously, and even push out some surprising bass. I highly recommend these speakers.

Pros: Clear sound and easy install (at least for Chevy Blazers).

Cons: They are a bit pricy but are worth it.

kicker component speaker upgrade

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Changed out the factory speakers to these from Kicker . Had not considered the component speakers until my cructhfeild advisor recommended them. Unbelieveable how much better the sound quality is. I used to have to turn the sound up to moderatly high levels to hear the full range of the music?lyrics because the front speakers are low in the doors. My new speakers have a much better mid range in the door and a 3/4" tweeter on top of the door near the pillar. Do not need the volume levels I used to use. Now it is an option to turn it up!

Pros: Two speakers replace one. Everything fits nicely inside the door with the new tweeter on top. Excellent sound quality. Crossover included....

Cons: The hardest part was drilling the rivets out of the old speakers to get the new parts mounted. I used 1/4-20 x 1" bolts with nylon lock nuts instead of the included sheet metal screws so the new kit wouldn't vibrate out of the door!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this system for my Fiesta 4 months ago. It sounded great when it was put in, and now, the front driver side tweeter is cutting in and out very badly and it ruins the sound completely. I'm not the kind of person who listens to there music so loud that it hurts your ears, and I didn't push them to there limits at any time. I am very disappointed with the reliability of the tweeters.

Pros: Great bass

Cons: Terrible treble

These Kicker component speakers were just what I needed. The install was easy and the sound quality is outstanding. Great product at a great price. This is the second set of Kickers that I have put into this car (different locations) and I;m seriously thinking that I might go for Kickers for my subs and after being a Rockford guy for many years that is saying something for sure.

Amazing sound quality and bass. Easy to install especially with the instructions sent along with them.

Pros: -Amazing sound quality -speaker adapter for perfectly in my Chevy -Extremely easy to install of you are familiar with removing your car's door panel and are familiar with how to connect wires

Cons: The tweeters came with a lot of different mounting brackets and it was rather difficult to choose which one was the correct and appropriate option for my vehicle.

Needs power to drive them.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed these Kicker component speakers on my daily commute car, a 2013 Toyota Corolla S. These components were installed in the front, along with a pair of Kicker 6x9's (40CS6934) on the rear. The deck I installed is a Kenwood Excelon DNX892 with Nav. Although this deck is rated at 22-watts rms per channel, it's simply not enough to power these sets of Kickers, and truly bring out the highs and the lows. The mid frequencies are superb, but the treble and bass are just satisfactory. I'm going to purchase a 75-watt rms per channel, Kenwood Excelon amp (XR400-4) next and so, hopefully, that will bring these speakers to life.

Pros: (I will provide an update once I get an amp hooked up as well)

Cons: Needs an amp.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just upgraded the speakers in my 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. These are a vast improvement in sound and the harnesses supplied made it a breeze to install. The tweeters are an exact fit for the stock location. The harnesses do not account for the crossover and tweeter though so you do have to do some work on that end. The speaker brackets supplied were not an exact fit but definitely helped. The product itself was 5 stars but the only thing making my review 4 stars was the install stuff supplied that was helpful but only got you so far.

Pros: Great improvement in sound Wiring harnesses make it easy Tweeters are a perfect fit just to slide in the factory location

Cons: There is no harness for the tweeter and crossover so you have to do some work in cutting the harness to make it all work

This is my first time ordering a speaker sound system for my car and i have to say these are definitely a great improvement over my stock system. I own a 2013 Honda Accord coupe and i could not be any happier with the outcome. I am not a sound system expert, nor was i looking for something crazy, and i am happy to say that i love these speakers. The sound is clear and there is a bass improvement over the stock system. I cannot say whether the installation was easy or not, since i had a shop install them for me, but i will definitely not regret buying these speakers.

First time car speaker installer

2001 Nissan Xterra
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speakers sound really good. I do believe I still need a sub to fully round out the sound, but it's a good start from the blown speakers that came with the 2001 Xterra I just bought. I had some trouble, it's my first car stereo speaker install. The mounting brackets that Crutchfield sold with the speakers didn't fit. However I found I didn't need them and was able to screw the speakers directly into the factory mount with the holes only being about 1mm off from perfect. But I made it happen! The tweeters had me baffled for awhile, until I realized I could remove the factory tweeters and their mounting bracket. I was then able to pop the kicker tweeter into the backside of the plastic tweeter cover of the door panel. It fit almost perfectly and I added a little super glue to help secure it, however I don't think that was really needed. I left some extra length to the tweeters wiring so I could move the door panel around while reinstalling it. Sounds great!!!!

Pros: Sounds great!

Cons: Not so easy to install.

How to use factory tweeter mounts, and where to mount crossovers

Written by: MisterLeadFoot from California on August 23, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Description says you need to make custom mounts for tweeters, but you can use factory mounts with a less-than-5-minute modification: Remove door panel. Remove factory speaker grill. Unscrew retaining nuts from factory tweeter mount screws. Screws are plastic so don't torque on them - ask me how I know! Remove tweeter mount from door panel. So can later use factory wire connectors to connect Kicker crossover to factory wire connector at woofer location in the door, unscrew wire retainer on factory tweeter, and snip wires close to tweeter. Factory tweeter is slid down onto retaining pins and epoxied to mount. Pop tweeter off mount by prying up With small srewdriver at tweeter base where it meets mount. Use a 1 - 3/4" hole saw to cut a hole for Kicker tweeter. Factory mount has a "crosshair" type tweeter "grill", and on back side of mount, crosshair is indented, which the hole saw drill bit fits perfectly into, so use that as a guide for your hole saw. This will cut a hole, and get rid of everything else you don't need on mount in one-fell-swoop! Unscrew retaining collar on Kicker tweeter and slide tweeter into mount from front. Since factory mount is thin, flip tweeter collar over and reinstall it on tweeter from back side of mount to secure tweeter to mount. Re-attach tweeter mount to door panel. Note that mount fits onto door panel only one way. Remember, screws are plastic. Voila, new tweeter in factory location!

Pros: Speakers sound great. Attached crossovers to back side of door panels in front of lower door pockets with 3M double-sided tape, so I could later adjust tweeter levels w/o having to remove door panels. Loosen screw and bottom of door panel, door pocket lifts out, and I can reach crossover switches. I later did the factory crossover bypass mod, and they sound even better.

2005 Acura RSX
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had these components installed in my 2 door coupe for a few months now, which is known to have lots of road noise. Both the tweeters and woofers are in the factory locations, the very front dash and the bottom front doors. I first tried them with a 50 watt rms per channel amp, and honestly my first impression was that they were mediocre. They distorted at high volume and the mids and bass weren't there. Didn't think they were any better than factory. That was until I installed a more powerful amp. With 100-125 watt rms to each side, THIS SET CAME ALIVE!!! The tweets rang through the freeway noise and the woofers gave that punchy distortion-free bass expected from Kicker. Response was even better after sound deadening. I don't have a subwoofer yet, but now I am considering not getting one. The only gripe I had left were the 3/4 inch tweeters. The music I played brought out some harsh highs that my ears couldn't handle at high volume, even after reducing the treble all the way down from my headunit. I figured the harshness was a signature of the metallic tweeter material. I didn't want to go through the hassle of starting over, so I bought a separate set Alpine's Type S silk tweeters. I had to widen the dash opening and cut/changed connectors to accommodate the new tweeters, but they worked PERFECTLY with the Kicker crossovers. Now I have natural sounding highs and punchy lows, still all for less than Kickers KS series components!

Pros: Having the right powered amplifier will really bring this set to life! Tuned correctly and with some sound deadening, the midbass from the woofers provide a nice low punch and the mids and highs cut through the road noise. I really recommend this set for the price.

Cons: Some don't prefer the harsh sounding highs from the metallic tweeters like this set provides and I am one of those people. Not enough to knock off a star though. I would recommend Kickers KS series components for a little more, or buying a separate set of silk tweeters on sale (which I personally did).

I replaced the front stock speakers with these. I am now getting good sound separation. Distortion has reduced and the sound is cleaner. Highs are crisp and clear, but I feel they lack some mids/bass. I probably need to replace my deck, but that's the next chapter

Pros: - Good highs. Clean/crisp sound

Cons: Mids/Bass. They probably need a good amp to drive the sound

Cons:

poor quality

Written by: dp from Alabama on July 1, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

the sound quality is very poor when used with an amp. I have purchased 2 sets of these speakers, thinking the first set must have been a bad set. Both sets have the same problem, when used with an amp the high tones (tweeters) fade out to a flat sound at higher volumes. Kicker tech says that the gain is not set to match the head unit, but no matter how the gain is set the high tones still fade out at high volume. I am using an amp that is 80 watts rms X 4, these speakers should be able to handle that power but they do not. Beware not for upgraded aftermarket systems!

Pros: good factory upgrades

Cons: not for amp powered systems

These speakers are really great! I'm using them with my new Pioneer FH-X820BS stereo. I used the new stereo with the factory Chevy Colorado speakers for over a month. Finally put my new Kicker speakers in yesterday, and Wow! What a difference they make. Crisp, clear, music with plenty of bass. Took some time fooling with the Pioneer audio setting to get the speakers sounding just right, but well worth the time. I'm also using a Kicker 40CSS654 Hideaway powered sub with power range: 2-100 watts RMS (300 watts peak power). Just an awesome system in my opinion.

Pros: They sound really awesome!

Cons: None!

Great, clear sound. Especially (obviously) when sufficiently powered. Note that these are not going to produce too much on the low-end. But the highs, mid-highs, and some mid-lows are extremely clear. Especially on the higher notes, you can really feel the sound... it is really a great experience. I just replaced factory front-door speakers with these. Extremely easy to do.

Pros: Clear Highs, Clear Mids, Easy Setup, Great Value

Cons: Very little low end (but that's what subs are for)

Pros: Wifee happy. Nice bass. Nice tweets.

Cons: Not really a con, but would have wished the tweets were the same size as the old ones so that I wouldn't have to epoxy them in.

Kicker CS 6.5 Components

Written by: Br3ntl3y from Worcester, MA on April 15, 2015

We all know you can't go wrong with Kickers. But I was impressed enuff with these to buy the matching DVC sub. I've had every speaker there is or was @ one time or another. These were just for my RV so I wanted cheaper not slamming. I originally bought Alpine Type Rs but couldn't justify the cost for the sound since I was only pushing them with 18 watts. So I exchanged them for these Kickers... Way better sound off a head unit I was impressed for the $. My only complaint is a humming feedback occasionally, it may be the old wiring in my RV no big deal.

Pros: Price/Sound

Cons: The 6 & 3/4 were supposed to fit in a 6.5. I had to enlarge the hole in my case? The tweeter mounts are stupid I made my own.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have never been a big fan of Kicker products, but since I had the Kicker 4x200 watt amp installed at the dealership I have noticed it is quite the sound monster. I decided to upgrade the factory speakers and though I would have preferred a different brand I am GLAD I listened to the advisors at Crutchfield and spent the extra cash on these! They are INCREDIBLY Clear and even added more bass than I would have imagined. I have yet to change out the factory tweeter as I have not found an access to removal of the A-Pillars, but the lower components are just GREAT sounding!! Could the price be a bit lower? Yeah, I still think Kicker is a bit proud of themselves when it comes to price-point, but they are TOP NOTCH in my book!

Pros: Easy fit with the FREE mounting brackets (provided by Crutchfield) and DYNAMIC yet ultra clear sound!

Cons: Have not found a way to replace factory tweeters and when I do I fear the crossovers are gonna be a bit large. Price could be a tad better.

One of the easiest installs I have ever done. The kit and instructions provided worked well. I did have to do a little modifications but nothing that was difficult.

Pros: Sound great, not quite as deep of bass as I wanted but there is plenty of sound. It is a huge improvement over my factory speakers.

Cons:

Great sound and easy to install into my 2002 Silverado HD2500 Crew Cab. I was also able to put the new tweeters in the front door panels where the originals were for a factory look. This was an easy upgrade and would recommend them for the ease of assembly and the great sound.

Pros: Great sound, easy to install, perfect fit in the factory locations and reaonably priced.

Great speakers for the price

Written by: Jeff from Petersburg, IL on December 27, 2014

I bought these for my son's 2000 Toyota Tacoma for Christmas to replace his factory back speakers. We had previously put Kickers in the doors, replaced the factory head with a media player, and had a 12" sub installed, so all that was remaining was the back speakers. We installed these in a few hours. We wanted to mount the tweeters flush mount, which meant drilling 1-5/8" holes. Installation was really very simple and the end result was a professional looking installation with virtually no exposed wires. We noticed an immediate improvement to the overall sound of his system with the component tweeters now in the mix. Everything was crisp, clear and punchy. My son now has the most complete sound system of all of our vehicles.

Pros: Quality, easy of installation.

Cons: None.

Great speaker for the money. Clips a bit early at full range off head unit power. Best when crossed over with a high pass filter while powering a separate sub. Great fit in Ford Mustang convertible and bolted right in without even having to drill different hole locations. Tweeter gain switch was unnecessary so I left it at 0. Too harsh otherwise.

Pros: Price, plenty of speaker wire, smallish x-over module

Cons: Time will tell how foam woofer-surrounds hold up. Would prefer poly or rubber but these are still worlds better than the stock paper/foam units

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just want to confess that I'm giving these speakers 4 stars because I haven't had them long enough to really break them in. I chose them for several reasons: Sensitivity rating, frequency response range and customer rating. Definitely notice the higher sensitivity rating. They overpower my rear speakers. They have nice highs. I can't say that I find them to be super clear like some reviewers have mentioned. I do appreciate great speakers (my last vehicle had Infinity Kappas), Can't say that these match that quality, but I'm not disappointed. As far as other ratings, people like what they like. These are good for the money and were fairly simple to install. I was able to fit the tweeters in the door using the old bracket but I'm hearing a little vibration so i will have to cut out holes and use the parts included in the box. The woofers actually will fit using the bracket for the stock speakers, you just have to be a bit creative. I left the bracket riveted in and used my dremel to cut out the old speaker. These woofers fit right in and you just need to pre-drill some small holes to screw into the plastic edge. Since we're talking about woofers, I'll add that the low frequencies aren't that impressive. I can't wait to put my sub in. I don't set my amp/subwoofer up to a ridiculous level - just enough to totally round out the low end. It's definitely needed with these speakers.

Pros: Great price. Frequency response is pretty good for this class of speaker and is noticeable. Nice looking.

Cons: Weak low end. Nothing else, really.

These speakers sound excellent! I drive a 2010 Civic Sedan and have the coaxial version of these in the back and the sound is great, but somewhat limited since I do not have an amp. I will be getting an amp to reach the high RMS rating of these. Bass is more than sufficient with a compact car. Installation was difficult for me... But if you have some electrical experience, it should be no problem.

Pros: Great sound, great price, high RMS.

Cons: Had to make my own mount for the tweeter. Complicated install for a novice, even with help from Crutchfield.

Just finished putting these in my 03 4runner today and man at the sound quality difference. You have to improvise a little when installing the tweeters but that is half the fun! They are running off of a pionner avh-x5500bhs head unit and they compliment each other nicely. They dont really handle the low end bass to well at high volumes but that can probably be fixed by adding an amp wich i will be doing later. My factory speakers, i thought they sounded ok, were really muddy sounding compared to these speakers. i also have the two way kickers installed in the back doors and they arent as loud but compliment one another pretty nicely. It is a highly recommended purchase!!!!

Pros: Good quality, superb sound, straight forward install

Cons: alot of wires that you have to tuck away and secure :)

2000 Honda Accord
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These match my rear 6x9's perfectly. Just enough punch. No distortion until higher levels (OEM HU). The Crossovers have enough amplification that 6db is too much and 3 might be a bit much. I set mine at 3db. The tweeters are mounted in my doors, in fact, that was the most difficult part of the install. The crossovers come with zipties, I wish they'd come with 3m double sided to stick under the panel, or the door. something. I ziptied jt to a harness for the time being. The woofer fit EXACTLY inside my OEM bracket, no cutting required( so no rattle). As for the Sound It hits every note from even a low range, stuff that a dedicated sub should be taking care of. I'll be using the HPF and LPF in a new HU later to isolate it. Running off a low power OEM HU they take care of everything AND more. I'll be doing a speaker amp later. Might take care of the high end distortion. Would I buy them again? Yes.

Pros: OEM install, Price, Distortion free

Cons: Lack of undersurface mount for tweeter, weatherproofing could be improved on tweeter/crossover connection.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have the Kicker 40CSS684 and the Kicker 40CSS654 in my car. I cant hear the difference between them so this review stands for both.

Pros: Easy to install. The wires from the crossover to the speakers have different connections so there is no way to mix them up. They put out a surprising amount of bass for their size. I still will put in subs anyway because im sure heavy bass through these will decrease their life. I listen to metal, rock, country, rap and electronic or dubstep and these speakers perform flawlessly in my opinion.

Cons: The tweeters are a little loud even on the +0 setting on the crossover. There is no need for the other settings. Buy other crimp connections to connect to the input wire, the ones they give are useless. Needed to adjust the higher frequencies down in my equalizer because they were too high. That may just be my specific application though.

Front door panel install. The speakers installed right into the existing speaker locations with no adjustments required including the tweeters. I originally set the tweeter level too high but once I lowered it, it sounded fantastic. Not real low bass response but I have these paired with the Kicker KS69 speakers and they more than take care of bass response. Paired together is fabulous. Couldn't be happier.

Pros: Fantastic sound, easy install.

Cons: Unfortunately Crutchfield did not send the bracket that was supposed to be needed for the install. Turns out that I didn't need it but would have been disappointed if I had.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great upgrade to factory speakers in 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Freedom Edition (really, cheap speakers in a $35k car?!). Sound better even than the matching 2 way 6.5" Kickers from the same CS series but which are half the price. Paired it with a small Alpine 45 x4 watt RMS amp so can't hear how loud they can go but no complaints here. Seem to have a little better low end that Polks which I have used in the past, which seem to have a high bias. The Crutchfield speaker adapter brackets are exactly what I needed, and the Mastersheets are SO useful!

Pros: worth it unless you're willing to spend the money for competition level gear, like I once did back in 1996

Cons: the only con I had was how relatively hard it is to get to the front dash speakers in my Jeep compared to most cars I've worked on; I'm not a super fan of tweeters up high as I don't like too much treble but that's the factory location - but the Kickers have a 3 position gain for the tweeters right on the crossover module!

Features

Polypropylene Woofer Cones: The Kicker CS-series speakers feature durable polypropylene woofer cones, resistant to the moisture and temperature extremes found in automotive applications.

Ribbed Polyester Foam Surrounds: The ribbed polyester foam surrounds allow extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL.

Tweeter Mounting Options: The tweeters come with brackets to allow multiple mounting configurations: flush-mounted, angled flush-mounted (approximately 10°), and angled surface-mounted (approximately 15°).

Tweeter Dimensions:

Flush Mount Angled Flush Mount Angled Surface Mount
Mounting Height 0.238" 0.563" 1.272"
Depth 0.532" 0.612" 0.554" (screw depth)
Frame Diameter 1.976" 1.976" N/A
Cutout Diameter 1.57" 1.587" N/A
Frame Width N/A N/A 1.688"
Frame Length N/A N/A 1.897"

Crossovers: The component system includes passive 2-way crossover networks for a seamless transition between the woofers and tweeters. The slope is 12dB per octave (both high pass and low pass) and the crossover point is 4000 Hz. A switch on each crossover allows you to set the tweeter output; 0 dB, +3 dB, or +6 dB. The crossovers' input and output wires are attached; the woofer output has quick slide terminals that connect directly to the woofer and the tweeter output has bullet terminals that mate to the terminals on the tweeter wires. The crossovers' dimensions are:

  • Length: 4.595"
  • Width: 2.463"
  • Height: 1.004"

Woofer Mounting: In addition to fitting standard 6-1/2 and 4-hole 6-1/2 applications, the woofer also has a standard 6-3/4 bolt pattern. However, if mounted in a 6-3/4 location the holes for the smaller pattern create an air leak, which must be sealed using a speaker baffle, or something similar.

Yes, the tweeters come out and can be mounted separate. This is what I did in my car. I have the tweeters mounted in the dash. The only downside is the wiring gets more complicated as you have to run the tweeter wires to the same box the speaker wires come from. [ Walter  Aug 11, 2015 ]
I didn't look at them close enough to be able to say for sure (and it's been a year and a half since I installed them). But I don't think they can feasibly be taken apart. [ James  Aug 08, 2015 ]
Yes the tweeter is a separate component that slips into the housing [ JEFF  Aug 07, 2015 ]
Yes, you can remove the housings. I have a 1999 Honda Civic with Factory Tweeters. They are built into the door panels but I was able to pull them out from the rear of the panel and install the new ones in their place. The Kicker tweeters fit perfectly with no issues. Be careful with the tweeter levels, I had to make sure they were turned all the way down because at head level they highs were a little too much. Great speakers though, have had great success with them. [ CHRISTOPHER  Aug 06, 2015 ]
Yes the tweeters are separate. [ STEPHEN  Aug 06, 2015 ]

RMS is usually per speaker. I wouldn't use an amp and push to max though. Usually half RMS coming from amp to speaker is plenty of juice and you won't fry anything [ JIM  Apr 03, 2015 ]
RMS rating should be per speaker. I would not reccomend pushing the max rms rating though. Usually an amp pushing half the RMS is plenty [ JIM  Apr 03, 2015 ]
For each set. Each door has their own rms. hope that helps [ AARON  Apr 03, 2015 ]
RMS is for each channel. [ Joseph  Apr 03, 2015 ]
They are 100 watts each RMS for a total of 200 watts. Very quality speakers but I wouldn't go higher than 90 watts each when powering them, or at least subtract gain. You will be very happy with them. Install baffle behind them for added midbass. [ thanks  Apr 03, 2015 ]
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you. [ Jeff  Dec 09, 2014 ]  Staff
I would call Crutchfield and ask them. [ MICHAEL  Nov 15, 2015 ]
I installed it on a 2007 subaru impreza. I didn't need any sort of converter. Utilize Crutchfields will it fit my car tool. They usually give you everything you need for the install of your specific vehicle [ CALEB  Jul 19, 2014 ]
Here's how I used factory mounts in 2000 Suburban with a less-than-5-minute modification: Remove door panel. Pop tweeter off mount by prying up With small screwdriver at tweeter base where it meets mount. [ MisterLeadFoot  Aug 23, 2015 ]
