Kicker

Our take on the Kicker Solo-Baric L5 Series 06S10L54

From top to bottom, Kicker builds the Solo-Baric L5 subs for powerhouse bass. The 06S10L54 10" subwoofer features Kicker's trademark square woofer cone, crafted from composites and treated with aluminum — it's rigid, responsive, and ready for hard-hitting, accurate playback at extreme sound pressure levels. The tough, tear-resistant Santoprene surround includes reinforcement at the edge of the cone for added durability.

A sturdy steel basket holds these elements in place, while air vents around the sub's perimeter pump the hot air away from the interior. Kicker's UniPlate pole piece and backplate allow extended cone travel, so the sub won't distort when the lows start bumping. The two 4-ohm voice coils offer the wiring flexibility you'll need to use your sub in either high output or multiple woofer configurations.

Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 4 ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel the woofer presents a 2 ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series the woofer presents an 8 ohm load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 4 ohm load.

Square Design: By making the Solo-Baric square, Kicker is giving you the most possible cone area (Sd) for a given size baffle, 16% to 20% more area than a conventional round subwoofer. More cone area means the Solo-Baric L5 moves more air, resulting in louder, deeper bass.

Cone Materials: The square cone is made of SoloKon, an ultra high performance composite, which remains rigid, minimizes cone flex and lowers harmonic distortion. SoloKon consists of a unique one-piece, aluminum vapor-deposit material that moves as a lightweight piston, exhibiting power and control. A rear cone brace integrates into the SoloKon with a continuous contact perimeter weld, which offers unmatched strength and resistance to deformation under pressure.

Surround: The tough, flexible Santoprene rubber surround has a long-throw, positive-roll design, which controls extreme cone excursion and is highly tear-resistant. The corners of the surround are ribbed to ensure linear cone motion. The surround is stitched to the reinforced cone edge, making separation between them virtually impossible, even in the harshest conditions.

Spider: The woofer is equipped with a wide poly-cotton spider which easily handles high cone excursions due to its increased diameter and unique shape.

Enhanced BAM (Basket And Motor) Assembly: The Solo-Baric L5 utilizes a high strength stamped steel basket which features a low-profile open design and provides a solid foundation for the precision-aligned motor assembly. Perimeter venting in the BAM relieves pressure from under the spider, supports linear excursion, and helps dissipate heat from the voice coil and motor structure.

UniPlate Construction: The Solo-Baric L5 features a one-piece UniPlate construction with a vented hyper-extended pole piece and backplate. This unique design provides the following benefits:

  • Optimizes heat transfer efficiency for cooler operation and maximum power handling ability
  • Eliminates erratic magnetic flux from the voice coil gap
  • Releases pressure under the suspension for uniform cone movement and responsive low bass
  • Prevents the voice coil from bottoming out and corresponding damage

Tinsel Lead Wires: The sleeved, high-power tinsel lead wires eliminate broken leads and power loss due to the common use of insufficient-gauge lead wires. The lead wires are stitched to the spider to relieve stress on the connections.

Rubber Magnet Boot: A black rubber boot covers the outside edge of the magnet structure to improve the cosmetics of the woofer and protect the magnet from chipping or breaking during installation.

Speaker Terminals: The terminals are spring loaded and nickel-plated for solid connections with heavy gauge speaker wire, up to 11 gauge.

Break-in Period: Due to the complex nature of Kicker Solo-Baric L5 woofers, they require a break-in period in order to produce optimum low-bass response. The high-performance suspension system makes the speakers very stiff "out-of-the-box". Approximately 2 weeks of daily playing will allow the suspension to break-in and reach its optimum equilibrium. A "broken-in" subwoofer will exhibit stronger bass performance, smoother response, and greater low-bass extension.

Enclosure Compatibility

Power Handling: The power handling specifications differ according to the type and size of the enclosure. The power handling specifications assume that both voice coils are in use. Note: Both voice coils in a dual voice coil speaker should always be connected.

Recommended Sealed Box Volume:

  • Compact (minimum enclosure volume): 0.66 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 450 watts RMS
  • SQ (maximum enclosure volume): 1.0 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 450 watts RMS

Recommended Vented Box Volume:

  • Compact: 1.25 cu/ft; 2.5" x 11.25" port opening; 19.75" port length; the woofer can handle up to 450 watts RMS
  • SPL/Deep Bass: 2.25 cu/ft; 3" x 11.25" port opening; 18" port length; the woofer can handle up to 450 watts RMS

Note: The power handling specifications listed with the vented enclosure recommendations apply only when a 25Hz, 24dB/octave subsonic filter (sold separately) is used with this woofer. If no subsonic filter is used, power handling may decrease, excessive port noise can occur, and the life of the woofer may be shortened.

Cutout: The woofer will not mount in a standard enclosure with a round cutout. Instead, the woofer must be mounted in an enclosure with a 9.25" x 9.25" square opening.

Great sub for a jeep

Written By jjduck13, Columbia, MO on Wednesday, April 23, 2008

I only have one of these right now in the solobaric truck box powered by a kicker 400 watt amp. This sub really does pound and I have not had any trouble with it. I have had it for 1.5 years now and it is still pounding away. In a jeep wrangler with a soft top you still are feeling the thump at 80 on the highway. This is impressive as you know if you have been in a jeep as the sounds from the air can be very very loud. None of my friends can believe I only have one as it is more powerful than their 2. they had 2 alpine type s's. I have been very impressed and would definetly buy another!!!

Get 2 while you're at it.

Written By Josh, Cloudcroft, NM on Saturday, September 08, 2007

Have 2 of these in the back of my Bmw 325is, with the Kenwood Excelon KAC-X1R at 1,200 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms pushing them... Its enough Decibels to make your head hurt. :) The one problem I have is that they are both in the Kicker original box.. very nice box so I thought, but when you open my trunk you can hear this popping noise, at first I thought I was overdriving them and the cone was bottoming out or something, but its the box it does it at very low volumes too. =S When I put pressure on the box physically it lessens....

In conclusion, these subs have broken the box with their immense power.

Kicker Fan Disapponted

Written By Nate, Amarillo, TX on Sunday, August 19, 2007

To start things off, I'll say that I'm a HUGE Kicker fan. I won't use any other subs or sub amps in my install jobs. I bought this speaker for my 04 extended cab Chevy, as the small enclosure volume lended itself to installation under the rear seat. I was and am very impressed with the speaker's performance. It gave very crisp bass - not to mention the rear view mirror rattle I enjoy every now and then. However, I was very disappointed when one of the stranded leads broke off the basket. I was not overdriving the speaker, just using a 300W Kicker amp with a cap for a little extra kick. I was able to fix it once, soldering the lead back on and siliconing the connection for strength. However, this lasted less than a year, and it is now a lost cause.

Still a Kicker fan, will probably buy another one of these subs as the box fits so well in the truck without taking up too much space. However, if you start using the speaker hard, get ready to replace it every few years.

great

Written By smilinbob, Owatonna, MN on Tuesday, May 29, 2007

I shopped around for a month before I decieded to get 2 of these L5's. The original plan was to buy some comps with a nice amp but the squares really appealed to me. I bought 2 of these and a Profile AP2000 2ch in a sealed box, I have around 320RMS going to each sub which is well over what I probably should have gotton. (my lights dim like its the 4th of July) You will be blown away with these, the second day I had them I put a bass tester cd in and it knocked my center mirror right off the windshield. They make the inner part of my ear rattle and especially with the 10in they keep up with fast bass with ease. My only problem is I don't want to ruin my alternator so I can't turn them up to where they want to be, these L5's only have 2 settings, off and loud. I'm a classic rock guy myself and I didn't realize how much my music would benefit from some subwoofers, but it gives it a concert feel. I would reccommend these to anyone looking for some subs but are weary of which to purchase.

Hit Hard

Written By Cristian, Turlock, California on Wednesday, January 17, 2007

WOW. I just got these hooked up. They are powered by a rockford amp pushing about 450 watts to each of the subs. Barely the minimum rms watts! I have them in a small ported box that barely meets the minimum ported volume specs. With the amps gain only at about 60% these subs pound my whole car and I drive a big cougar! I was really impressed with the sound! I dont have them cranked all the way either cuz they are new and i dont want to blow them! They are easily hitting as hard or harder them most 12in subs out their! My next plan is to make a bigger box to the max ported volumes specs and that should also make a big difference. I also cant wait till the break in point is over so i can crank these subs hard and annoy my neighbors. Also a bigger amp would also make a difference since i am only feeding them the minimum amount of power but it they are already hitting incredible hard for them just imagine what more power and a bigger box will do! Buy them and only use rockford and kicker products. They are the best in car audio!

Written By Anonymous, Cumming, Ga on Monday, August 21, 2006

I have two of these in my GMC Sonoma and they hit like crazy! Its alright to run a little bit more juice to them. I have a 1000 watt amp running to them and thats not enough. They make my whole truck raddle. If your looking for a good sounding, hard hitting sub that'll last a while go for this one
