Our take on the Kicker Solo-Baric L7 06S10L74

Kicker's Solo-Baric L7 subwoofers deliver gutbusting performance that will separate your system from the rest of the pack. And you'll appreciate the dual voice coil design that allows you to wire your sub to get the most out of your system.

The 06S10L74 10" subwoofer begins with a square cone crafted from aluminum-treated composites and suspended in a tough Santoprene rubber surround. This combination of an ultra-rigid cone and excellent cone excursion moves lots of air, for bass you can hear and feel.

It takes more than a cone to make a great sub, and Kicker's got the whole package. A cast-aluminum basket minimizes resonance that affects accuracy at higher levels, while Kicker's UniPlate construction virtually eliminates "bottoming out" — the evil sound that a sub makes when it's overextended.

Perimeter cooling vents help the L7 sub run hard and long without distortion. This versatile sub works great in a sealed or vented box — whether you prefer tight, punchy bass or big, booming bottom, the Solo-Baric L7 subwoofer delivers.

Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 4 ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 2 ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents an 8 ohm load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 4 ohm load.

Square Design: By making the Solo-Baric square, Kicker is giving you the most possible cone area (Sd) for a given size baffle, 16% to 20% more area than a conventional round subwoofer. More cone area means the Solo-Baric L7 moves more air, resulting in louder, deeper bass.

Cone Materials: An injection molded and reinforced, one-piece SoloKon cone is used resulting in greater rigidity for less cone flex and less distortion. In addition, the cone is very resistant to environmental extremes. A rear cone brace provides added strength and reduces cone flex under stress.

Surround: The tough, flexible Santoprene rubber surround has a long-throw, positive-roll design, which controls extreme cone excursion and is highly tear-resistant. The corners of the surround are ribbed to ensure linear cone motion. The surround is stitched to the reinforced cone edge, making separation between them virtually impossible.

Inverted Structural Dome: The Inverted Structural Dome replaces a conventional dust cap and locks into the cone for unmatched structural integrity and greatly reduced cone flexing/resonance.

Patented Enhanced BAM (Basket And Motor) Assembly: The cast aluminum basket features a low profile, open design to provide a solid anti-resonant foundation for the motor assembly.

Spider: The durable poly-cotton semi-progressive spider provides precise coil alignment and critical cone motion control.

Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around an aluminum former with a flared bottom to effectively dissipate heat. The result is a 220° Celsius (428° Fahrenheit) rating to increase durability.

Chromed UniPlate Construction: The UniPlate construction combines the backplate and extended pole piece into a single unit to maximize magnetic efficiency and minimize alignment problems often caused by two-piece construction. The bottom of the UniPlate is chromed to provide enhanced heat transfer for cool operation and maximum power handling.

Bumped Back Plate: The deep bumped back plate lets the voice coil reach maximum excursion without bottoming-out.

Perimeter Venting: The perimeter venting cooling system continuously pumps hot air away from the voice coil, replacing it with cool outside air.

Gaskets: The one-piece rear gasket insures an airtight seal. The shielding front gasket enhances the cosmetics and helps protect the wide surround.

Rubber Magnet Boot: A black rubber boot covers the outside edge of the magnet structure to improve the cosmetics of the woofer and protect the magnet from chipping or breaking during installation.

Tinsel Leads: The tinsel lead wires are silver coated flat braided ribbon cables with soft rubber jackets. They are glued and stitched to the spider and the connections are offset at the terminal to align with the cone brace indentation and support extended excursion.

Speaker Terminals: The terminals are spring loaded and nickel-plated for solid connections with speaker wire up to 11 gauge.

Break-in Period: Due to the complex nature of Kicker Solo-Baric L7 speakers, they require a break-in period in order to produce optimum low-bass response. The high-performance suspension system makes the speakers very stiff "out-of-the-box". Approximately 2 weeks of daily playing will allow the suspension to break-in and reach its optimum equilibrium. A "broken-in" subwoofer will exhibit stronger bass performance, smoother response, and greater low-bass extension.

Enclosure Compatibility

Power Handling: Power handling varies depending upon the enclosure, as listed below. The power handling specifications listed with the vented enclosure recommendations apply only when a 25Hz, 24dB/octave subsonic filter is used with this woofer; if no subsonic filter is used, the power rating will decrease and excessive port noise can occur.

Recommended Sealed Box Volume:

  • Compact (minimum enclosure volume): 0.66 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 600 watts RMS
  • SQ (maximum enclosure volume): 1.0 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 600 watts RMS

Recommended Vented Box Volume:

  • Compact: 1.25 cu/ft; 2.5" x 11.25" port opening; 19.75" port depth; the woofer can handle up to 450 watts RMS
  • SPL/Deep Bass: 2.25 cu/ft; 3" x 11.25" port opening; 18" port depth; the woofer can handle up to 450 watts RMS

Cutout: The woofer will not mount in a standard enclosure with a round cutout. Instead, the woofer must be mounted in an enclosure with a 9.5" x 9.5" square opening.

Deep, Musical, and LOUD

Written By Matt, Hutchinson, MN on Wednesday, June 11, 2008

This sub is absolutely insane. I have a single 10" getting 600RMS from a bridged profile 1200 Amp. My mirrors shake and even the doors rattle. I have it in a ported box i custom made to fit perfectly in the back of my S10. This thing hits insanely hard, yet amazingly accurate. I can listen to the hardest hitting rap and be heard for blocks, yet this thing cranks out every Bass note to any Metal or Rock i throw at it perfectly. Easy 5 stars. I plan on purchasing a second one and another amp to put in the back of my truck. Just make sure you break it in a bit first.
Kicker #1. Livin loud.

Great Sound Quality

Written By Kirk, Albuquerque, NM on Tuesday, February 20, 2007

I have one of these in a sealed enclosure powered by a Rockford Fosgate mono amp. It plays all my music with ease. I listen to classical, jazz, country, pop, rap, and Metal. I keep a steep crossover setting of either 18db or 24db slope. Lightning quick bass that is smooth, deep, clean, and musical. I bought it for me, to enhance my driving experience. This subwoofer easlily fills the cab of my truck with great bass. Although, I ocassionally roll down my windows and "blast" country or death metal back at annoying subpar bass mobiles that drive down the streets. This sub kicks like a mule when called upon to do so.

Any subwoofer can produce "noise" to rattle the trunk and annoy the next car or neighbor hood. But, it takes a Great subwoofer to produce real bass. Kicker Solo Barics can be very musical to satisfy a more critical listener and provide enough punch to satisfy a bass head, hip hop/rap listener.

Adequate amplifier power and a proper break in period are required to make these subs sound great.

MAD BASS

Written By Julio, CHICAGO, IL on Sunday, November 26, 2006

Kicker is the best. This 10" L7 will blow any 12's anyday. Nobody can compete with these subs. They are 600 RMS each and I have 2 of them. That means I have 1200RMS and you need a pretty good amp to pick them up. I have a amp wired at 2 ohms and it pushes 1100RMS to the speakers. This is a perfect match for the subs. Everyone can hear these subs from blocks away. Dont be scared about buying this. You will not regret it. They have alot of deep bass and will kill any other subs. Kicker is the best. Just make sure you play the subs for low volumes for around 24 hours before wanging the speakers all the way. Try not to crack your windows. Buy them!

awesome pounding sub

Written By ahhman, nys on Saturday, September 23, 2006

this sub is awesome, i made a 1.0 cubic sealed for 2 l7 10in box(each box have a seperate 1.0 cubic foot enclosure, and these sub rocks, deep low end and has alot of power, just remember to get a strong enough amp for these, the price seems out of wack, on this site, for 10's these thing slam because they act like 12's, (because of the square design). if you have a small car compact, 1 sub is sufficent, the bass out of that one sub, is incredicle, espcially in a sealed 1.0 cubic foot box , for a big sedan 2 or 3 sub, 3 three being max, is very sufficent. just remember when using these sealed make a seperate chamber for each sub, the bass response will be alot better, when using 2 or more subs,

The type of bass you get from your component subwoofer doesn't depend on the woofer alone. You'll need a strong, tightly constructed enclosure for optimum subwoofer performance.
