Our take on the Kicker CompVR 07CVR122

by Dominic Devito
Kicker

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

It's a tough job but somebody's got to do it. Kicker builds the CompVR round subwoofers to endure the the harsh demands of producing big bass. Each sub houses an injected-molded polypropylene cone and Santoprene™ rubber surround in a high-strength steel basket with plenty of interior venting. Kicker's SoloKon™ cone design looks fantastic while it protects against flexing that can wreck your sub and your sound.

The 07CVR122 12" sub boasts dual 2-ohm voice coils that can manage a heavy power onslaught, while adding more options for wiring up your system. UniPlate construction molds parts of the sub's motor structure together as a single unit to optimize heat transfer, improve accuracy, and extend cone excursion.

Kicker CompVR subs can be used for marine applications, so make some waves with these stellar subwoofers.

Team this sub with a Kicker amp and save
Take away the worry of picking the right amp to power this sub and keep it an all-Kicker package too. This Kicker bass package adds a Kicker DX500.1 mono sub amp and lets you save money in the bargain.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible. Most car amplifiers are stable down to 2 ohms in standard mode, or 4 ohms in bridged operation.

Highlights:

  • 12" subwoofer with dual 2-ohm voice coils
  • injection-molded polypropylene cone
  • ribbed Santoprene rubber surround

Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 2 ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 1 ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents a 4 ohm load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 2 ohm load.

Cone Materials: The cone was developed using Kicker's SoloKon technology. The ultra high performance injection molded polypropylene cone remains rigid and minimizes cone flex, lowering harmonic distortion. Distortion in the cone is further reduced with new back bracing.

Surround: The optimized ribbed Santoprene surround allows extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL. The surround is double-stitched to the cone to add a mechanical fastener to the chemical adhesives. This prevents the cone and surround from separating in the harshest conditions.

Enhanced BAM (Basket And Motor) Assembly: The high-strength steel basket features a low-profile open design, and provides a solid foundation for the precision-aligned motor assembly. Perimeter venting in the BAM relieves pressure from under the spider, supports a linear excursion, and helps dissipate heat from the voice coil and motor structure.

UniPlate Construction: The woofer features a one-piece UniPlate construction with a vented hyper-extended pole piece and backplate. This unique design provides the following benefits:

  • Optimizes heat transfer efficiency for cooler operation and maximum power handling ability
  • Eliminates erratic magnetic flux from the voice coil gap
  • Releases pressure under the suspension for uniform cone movement and responsive low bass
  • Prevents the voice coil from bottoming out and corresponding damage

Tinsel Leads: The woofer features sleeved high-power tinsel lead wires to resist breakage and power-robbing resistance losses. The lead wires are terminated with polymer-based strain relieving mechanical fasteners.

Speaker Terminals: The spring loaded, nickel-plated terminals provide solid connections for speaker wire up to 8 gauge. Single banana plugs and pin connectors will also fit.

Break-in Period: Due to the complex nature of Kicker Comp VR speakers, they require a break-in period in order to produce optimum low-bass response. The high-performance suspension system makes the speaker very stiff out-of-the-box. Approximately 2 weeks of daily playing will allow the suspension to break-in and reach its optimum equilibrium. A broken-in subwoofer will exhibit stronger bass performance, smoother response, and greater low-bass extension.

Rubber Magnet Boot: A black rubber boot covers the outside edge of the magnet structure to improve the cosmetics of the woofer and protect the magnet during installation.

Marine Ready: This woofer is made with a powder coated, weather resistant basket and stainless steel hardware, so it can be used in marine and mobile applications.

Enclosure Compatibility

Power Handling: The power handling specifications differ according to the type and size of the enclosure. The power handling specifications assume that both voice coils are in use. Note: Both voice coils in a dual voice coil speaker should always be connected.

Recommended Sealed Box Volume:

  • Compact (minimum enclosure volume): 1 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 400 watts RMS (200 watts per voice coil)
  • SQ (maximum enclosure volume): 4.6 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 300 watts RMS (150 watts per voice coil)

Recommended Vented Box Volume:

  • Compact: 1.75 cu/ft; 2.5" x 12.5" port opening; 20" port depth; the woofer can handle up to 300 watts RMS (150 watts per voice coil)
  • SPL/Deep Bass: 2.25 cu/ft; 3" x 12.5" port opening; 20.5" port depth; the woofer can handle up to 300 watts RMS (150 watts per voice coil)

Note: The power handling specifications listed with the vented enclosure recommendations apply only when a 25Hz, 24dB/octave subsonic filter (sold separately) is used with this woofer. If a subsonic filter is not used, power handling may decrease, excessive port noise can occur, and the life of the woofer may be shortened.

Great sub, blew 2 months out of warranty

Written By Ryan, Herndon, VA on Saturday, December 29, 2012

This sub does indeed "kick." Great sound overall before tweaking it, perfect sound after some adjustments on the amp. I had 500W mono amp attached to this in a custom built box. I've owned it for just over a year and it died last week. It was great while it lasted but the ground wire fired on the speaker and caused quite a mess in my trunk.
Pros:
Great sound
Cons:
Blew just outside of warranty.

Kicker Lives Up To the Hype

CompVR 12's was my first Kicker purchase. I've owned MTX subs which perform well bit lack the impact the Kickers provide. Great buy! Everyone is impressed by them. They provide supreme bass in my ported enclosure. They set off car alarms with the sub setting on my head unit about 1/2 its maximum.
Pros:
Great impact. Pick up all low frequencies well
Cons:
None so far.

I recommend these kickers to my friends, family, and ANYONE interested in getting a subwoofer. Thumbs up KICKER! I am not really into stickers, but I will be proudly slapping the kicker sticker that my subs came with on my car! Dont waste your time add these to the cart and 'check out'
Pros:
These kickers are LOUD! They can hit the lows my kenwoods missed and my music sounds alot better now! Speaking of that the sound quality is great! I am so glad Pete pointed these out to me. instead of replacing ANOTHER kenwood (two total)
Cons:
The instruction manual is in black and white. No biggie. But reading a black and white wire diagram with black and white wires and the picture of the sub. Just not a great idea.

everybit of sound that I needed. from rock/metal/rap/blues etc.... it hits all of the
generes.. I will Say that you can only go to 8" inch min. on your box to be built.
Anything else and it wont have enough space to fit and produce a good sound..

Great subs so far, still breaking them in(so annoying, but necessary). I've played
them for about 6-7 hours now and set at a gain of 3 out of 11 on my kicker 300.1
amp and my headunit sub level at +1 or +3, depending on the day, they're still
surprisingly loud. Great low end bass. Lol I'm genuinely excited to fully break
them in and turn em up. As always, crutchfield is where I buy all of my car audio
equipment, fast, courteous and with great customer service, my subs were to me
within 2 days. I highly recommend these

Comp vr 12 are the best

Written By Jasper, atascadero ca on Saturday, October 09, 2010

so i got this sub last year and it blows apart the competition. i am running a Kenwood 910 d 1800 watt amp and a single kicker in a ported box and oh my gosh it hits so hard. there is no distortion or bottoming out. it makes music out side of my car sound so lame and lifeless. this sub is so loud it literally makes my throat and inside of my ear drums vibrate.

if you want a sub that wont break and can beat anyone else buy a kicker! end of story.

Bought this sub to replace my 2 Rockford Fosgate P1S415. It fits in less than 1/4 of those 2 and on its own in a closed box with a profile AP 1000 California series powering it hits clean and Blows my 15s out of the water.

P.S. I love having the DVC to get it to 2 ohms resistance.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My friend has at least 2 grand in his stereo and these hit the same as his. I am running them from a refurbished t5002 from Crutchfield and I've seen several birthsheets for those amps and they are double what they're rated for. Making them almost 2,000 watts peak. And I believe it. These subs are bridged and wired to a 2 ohm load. I have them in a Marquis and you can feel it all through out your body when they hit. They are very very impressive and never get warm or distort. I have 1/0 awg wire in my system (150 amp fuse) and am using 18 awg speaker wire and a sealed box. I do need to get a new battery that holds more reserved power though, because when they hit, you can see it in my headlights (depending on the song). But be careful when wiring them because the way kicker has their terminals spread out (which I like alot but you have to pay attention)can be confusing. Overall, they are amazing subs and I'm very impressed. .

Well I picked these up for one reason......the kicker name and the fact that they are buy one get one free. I was amazed at the response they have. I have 2 of them in a 3.5cu.ft. Slot-ported enclosure and run them with a kicker zx750.1 in a 1994 taurus. THE TRUNK LIFTS OFF OF THE SEALS!!!! THE SUNROOF AND ROOF FLEX !! So they are loud but......they are also very clean sounding which was unexpected. Great Bass On A Budget. BUY THEM NOW!!!!! LOL.

BOOM BOOM

Written By sam, Dana Point on Wednesday, April 29, 2009

This one sub is installed in a 02 accord 4dr with stock head unit and speakers (6 speakers). I use a Alpine MRP-M500, Rated at 500w at 2ohms and 1100w at peak, more than enough. Its in a ported box.

This thing pounds, with any type of music. (rock, rap, etc.) At a quarter of the volume on head unit, my trunk starts to rattle. I Have to tighten all the trunk lid bolts every month. Half way volume and this can be heard a block away.

Make sure you get your trunk sound deadening done.

Slammin Subs

Written By michael, Sidney, Oh on Monday, April 07, 2008

I have 2 of these wired to a 2 ohm load, powered by an 08zx750.1 certified @ 926 watts @ 14.4 volts. These things will take a beating. I have them in a ported box so that should lower the rms capabilities, but I can't tell. Even with the amp's gain setting @ abt 3/4 and the bass boost @ 1/2 they haven't blown. The door panels on a 96 cavalier flex tho =). Well worth the $ Thanx Crutchfield.

WHOA!

Written By no, New York, NY on Thursday, February 14, 2008

I got 2 of these in a Ported Box hooked up at 2ohms with an Alpine PDX 1.1000 (1000 watt amp) in my Toyota 4 Runner, and this thing is krazy!!! Extremely loud, especially when I have an equalizer controlling my highs lows and mids. You will feel the vibration in your neck when you rolling down the street. You also feel the air pushing out from the back of the truck to the front. My friends say when they are driving next to me, that they can feel the bass, even when they are 2-4 cars away. This is great! It'll break necks especially when you have the right Speakers and radio pushing out the power and the nice crisp sounds of a song.

If you're going to purchase these Subs, make sure you are not using a low-end AMP as well as a low-en after market radio. You want to get the full potential of these Subs. If you don't want to spend money and put these subs into use, save your money and buy something cheaper.

These hit so hard, I love them. This is the first system I've ever installed in my car and I'm completely satisfied with these subs. I've got two of these powered by a Kenwood Excelon KAC-X10D 600W amp and it can't even max these out. Bass hits hard, and they look so good. Couldn't be happier with these. Been in for about 3 months now.

Written By mrAC, louisville, ky on Friday, August 31, 2007

these subs are alright, i got them at a deal, an i always heard good things about kicker, so i went ahead an jumped on the deal, shortly after, i was pleasantly surprised by the base from ONE SUB alone, so i hooked both of them up to a mere 600 watt amp and blasted away, keep in mind i dont kno much about speakers an what not, but after a months abuse, one of them blew, so i replaced it, an 2 weeks later, both subs gave out, so i was sorely dissappointed, now ive had 2 used audibahns for almost 2 years! an they never once gave me any problem, but a brand new kicker goes out in less than 2 months? psssh.. personally all i want is some good trunk rattling, afordable speakers, i dont really need the namebrand or the bells an whistles
thanks

superb subwoofer

Written By cruiserdude, Edmonton, AB on Friday, August 24, 2007

after blowing my first sub, a JBL, i was looking for something that could handle a little more power, and hit each note with precision (something the JBL couldn't). so i read the reviews on this sub and decided to buy it. i must say that this sub is much better than the JBL, and MUCH louder. once again i am giving this sub 460 watts from my kenwood KAC-7202 amplifier, and this sub outperforms any single sub i've seen. if the JBL can be heard around my block, this one can be heard around my whole neighbourhood.

I got four of these hooked up to a Kicker KX1200.1 sub amp. Wired each sub in series to make a 4 ohm load and then all four in parallel to drop down to 1 ohm load. My amp is pushing out 1480 watts rms at 1 ohm, thats 370 watts per sub. Subs are ported with about 1.75 cubic ft each. This sub and amp set up slams hard in my extra cab truck.

Kicker CompVR 07CVR122

i upgraded the other day from two comp 10"'s in a sealed box to these in a vented box and they slam SO hard. but the thing is they still sound really solid and nice no matter how loud they get. i have an infinity amp on them now thats putting a little less than 300 watts to each sub. i cant even imagine how itd sound with the recomended 400 wats persub. its time to dynomat the trunk after these pound for a while. put a pack of cigs on the dash and they'll bounce right out the window during some songs. all in all, this is an awesome buy, you can spend $400-$500 on subs that aren't going to get anywhere close to the sound as these. awesome sub

I got 2 of these in a sealed enclosure running on a 1000 watt 4 channel amp that i bridged to 2 channels, im only at half volume and their only getting 225 rms to each sub and they hit hard and are loud, my whole car shakes to pieces, i have a jeep Cherokee and when i turn it up to half, i can barely breath because of the air pressure inside, it kills all my friends systems and this is my first system, great sound quality and they hit hard, and thats what i was looking for, did i mention their really loud

These babies rock! I've never been a big fan of anything but Alpine, JL, and Eclipse. I blew my Type R's showing off like usual. When I saw the price, this I had to try out. Have both subs on a series connection. Connected them parallel to an MRD-1000. It is a very old amp from Alpine, but it has never let me down since day one. It easily thumps out those low frequencies. On the other reviews people give complaints about these subs too much. In my opinion the sub will respond to the amplifier you have. Cheap amp = cheap bass that being said I'm extremely happy with the way Kicker made this sub.

Insanely low

I have two of the dual two ohms in my extended cab chevy powered by a Infinity 611a. I built a pretty large sealed box for them so they don't have a ton of kick, but the sustained low frequency is beasting for not being ported. On certain songs, it's so loud and low that I can clearly see the windows on my house moving. I think these subs are great for the money considering I have heard much quieter systems with much more expensive speakers. I would like to get more kick out of them but I'm sure that can be fixed with a smaller sealed box.

For the price, you would have a hard time beating these subs. I just got two of them and hooked them up to just a Rockford 325.1 amp in a sealed box with 1.0 cubic feet of space per sub and they are incredibly loud. I haven't even gone through the two week break in period yet, but the sound quality is great. Each sub is getting less then 170 watts RMS compared to the 400 watts RMS they can handle a piece.

Definitely worth the money. I can't imagine how loud they would be if I had a more powerful amp. I already get a horrible headache if I listen to it at full volume for more than fifteen minutes. You can really feel it in your seat.

If you are getting more then one just make sure you get a wiring diagram that's easy to follow off the net because the instructions only show how to wire up the dual voice coils for one sub. Rockford has good diagrams on their site that I used.
