Kicker

Our take on the Kicker CompVR 07CVR82

It's a tough job but somebody's got to do it. Kicker builds the CompVR round subwoofers to endure the the harsh demands of producing big bass. Each sub houses an injected-molded polypropylene cone and Santoprene™ rubber surround in a high-strength steel basket with plenty of interior venting. Kicker's SoloKon™ cone design looks fantastic while it protects against flexing that can wreck your sub and your sound.

The 07CVR82 8" sub boasts dual 2-ohm voice coils that can manage a heavy power onslaught, while adding more options for wiring up your system. UniPlate construction molds parts of the sub's motor structure together as a single unit to optimize heat transfer, improve accuracy, and extend cone excursion.

Kicker CompVR subs can be used for marine applications, so make some waves with these stellar subwoofers.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible. Most car amplifiers are stable down to 2 ohms in standard mode, or 4 ohms in bridged operation.

Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 2 ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 1 ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents a 4 ohm load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 2 ohm load.

Cone Materials: The cone was developed using Kicker's SoloKon technology. The ultra high performance injection molded polypropylene cone remains rigid and minimizes cone flex, lowering harmonic distortion. Distortion in the cone is further reduced with new back bracing.

Surround: The optimized ribbed Santoprene surround allows extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL. The surround is double-stitched to the cone to add a mechanical fastener to the chemical adhesives. This prevents the cone and surround from separating in the harshest conditions.

Enhanced BAM (Basket And Motor) Assembly: The high-strength steel basket features a low-profile open design, and provides a solid foundation for the precision-aligned motor assembly. Perimeter venting in the BAM relieves pressure from under the spider, supports a linear excursion, and helps dissipate heat from the voice coil and motor structure.

UniPlate Construction: The woofer features a one-piece UniPlate construction with a vented hyper-extended pole piece and backplate. This unique design provides the following benefits:

  • Optimizes heat transfer efficiency for cooler operation and maximum power handling ability
  • Eliminates erratic magnetic flux from the voice coil gap
  • Releases pressure under the suspension for uniform cone movement and responsive low bass
  • Prevents the voice coil from bottoming out and corresponding damage

Tinsel Leads: The woofer features sleeved high-power tinsel lead wires to resist breakage and power-robbing resistance losses. The lead wires are terminated with polymer-based strain relieving mechanical fasteners.

Speaker Terminals: The spring loaded, nickel-plated terminals provide solid connections for speaker wire up to 8 gauge. Single banana plugs and pin connectors will also fit.

Break-in Period: Due to the complex nature of Kicker Comp VR speakers, they require a break-in period in order to produce optimum low-bass response. The high-performance suspension system makes the speaker very stiff out-of-the-box. Approximately 2 weeks of daily playing will allow the suspension to break-in and reach its optimum equilibrium. A broken-in subwoofer will exhibit stronger bass performance, smoother response, and greater low-bass extension.

Rubber Magnet Boot: A black rubber boot covers the outside edge of the magnet structure to improve the cosmetics of the woofer and protect the magnet during installation.

Marine Ready: This woofer is made with a powder coated, weather resistant basket and stainless steel hardware, so it can be used in marine and mobile applications.

Enclosure Compatibility

Power Handling: The power handling specifications differ according to the type and size of the enclosure. The power handling specifications assume that both voice coils are in use. Note: Both voice coils in a dual voice coil speaker should always be connected.

Recommended Sealed Box Volume:

  • Compact (minimum enclosure volume): 0.4 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 200 watts RMS (100 watts per voice coil)
  • SQ (maximum enclosure volume): 1.8 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 140 watts RMS (70 watts per voice coil)

Recommended Vented Box Volume:

  • Compact: 0.8 cu/ft; 1.5" x 8" port opening; 20.75" port depth; the woofer can handle up to 75 watts RMS (37.5 watts per voice coil)
  • SPL/Deep Bass: 1.2 cu/ft; 2" x 8" port opening; 19.125" port depth; the woofer can handle up to 75 watts RMS (37.5 watts per voice coil)

Note: The power handling specifications listed with the vented enclosure recommendations apply only when a 25Hz, 24dB/octave subsonic filter (sold separately) is used with this woofer. If a subsonic filter is not used, power handling may decrease, excessive port noise can occur, and the life of the woofer may be shortened.

More Than Expected

Written By Riley, Dell Rapids, SD on Monday, March 01, 2010

I was just testing the location in my camaro for some other subs, and stuck 2 of these in
a box in the rear well, and they sounded even better than expected. You wouldn't have
thought they were only 2 8's in the back they were powered by a Kicker 2:150 amp at 4
ohms.

Decent

Written By cbigganz, Kelowna, BC on Tuesday, March 25, 2008

I purchased one of these for my 1988 MR2 and dropped it in a 1.2 cubic foot enclosure in my frunk. It is very quick and hits some decent lows, great for rock and metal but if you're into rap or techno you will be disappointed.

For an 8" sub it does a good job. I suggest a sealed enclosure, 75 watts rms just isnt enough for a ported sub.

Clean Bass

Written By Mary, Buffalo, NY on Monday, May 21, 2007

These little Kickers pack a punch for their size! I have the voice coils wired in series (for a 4ohm load) and they perform great! Even at relatively low volumes, these subs make their presence known. However, at very low frequencies, they seem to run out of breath. But, they are 8 inches after all. Overall, these are the nicest 8 inch subs I've seen, and I highly recommend them!

Great Subwoofers

Written By Red, Rhode Island on Friday, March 23, 2007

At first I was unsure about an 8" sub however, Kicker did a good job with these. I have 2 of them in a custom designed box for the back of my 2000 Ford Ranger (ext cab). I listen to a variety of music and these subs satisfy all. For rap (old school) they satisfy low notes and hard hits. Not as well as a larger sub but enough, and they make up for it. For Rock, Punk and Ska these subs are extremely tight and quick. They hit hard and fast which is what I was really looking for. The dual voice coils are nice and I have these hooked up to an Alpine MRP-M350 amp and each sub is recieving about 150 watts rms. The are rated for 200 rms which I will push with a Kicker kx400.1 amp, and I have no doubt that they can take it. Again great subs, and if you are looking for a tight quick sub these should be your pick.

The type of bass you get from your component subwoofer doesn't depend on the woofer alone. You'll need a strong, tightly constructed enclosure for optimum subwoofer performance.
