Enclosed Subwoofers 101

An enclosed subwoofer is a box with a subwoofer already installed. The advantage to buying an enclosed sub is that the manufacturer made the sub, then designed and built the box as a perfect match, so you'll get the best possible performance. Every enclosed sub has a maximum RMS power handling rating, so pair it with an amp with a similar RMS power rating to get the best performance.

This set up is just awesome! It is making Mince Meat outta my car. The bass is so clear, tight, loud, and a bass you can feel in your chest. Box is sturdy, nice looking, and to spec from the company. If you buy this set up, you will not be dissapointed. I am running a MTX Thunder Elite 600D amp with the gain all the way down, boost all the way down, and a 1/2 fared cap that is barely being drawn off of. My car will soon need extra nuts and bolts. :-)

Pros: Sturdy nice looking box, mean looking subs, spec built, will handle low wattage like a champ, and will handle high wattage like no ones business.

Cons: Non

I have owned a lot of different name brand subs and amps in my time & I must say if you are looking for a GR8 sounding, hard hitting with SUPER tight bass these 07 12" Comp VR's & there VERY SEXXXY vented Kicker box are for sure the ones you want & need!!!! They are the BEST I have ever had!!!! Keep up the GR8 work Kicker!!! HiFonics amps are AWESOME as well, like I said before I crank my stuff with HARD & HEAVY METAL for hours sometimes & Brutus will get a little warm NEVER HOT TO THE TOUCH & has never went into protect mode!!! Very happy with these items, also I would & do recommend these to everybody that wonders up in amazement & a lot of these people say they heard me & my HiFon Kicks coming for anywhere from 2 or 3 minuets to 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic!!!!!

Pros: I NEVER would have thought two 12's could sound SOOOOOOOO GOOD & HIT SOOOOOOOO HARD for SOOOOOOOO LONG, but they have for near one year now!!!!!!!!! I have them hooked to a 1200 watt HiFonics class D mono block amp which is also a GREAT PIECE!!! These 07 12" Comp VR's ROCK the ONLY prob I have is now I am chasing & TRYING to quieten vibrations that they cause on the outside of our Chevy Blazer!!! GREAT JOB AGAIN KICKER (& HiFonics)!!!!

Cons: The ONLY THING I DIDN'T like was waiting four days for the subs & box to arrive!!!!!! Haven't had any problems at all with the subs, Kicker box (which is also AWESOME) or the HiFonics, Brutus amp!!!!!

Amazing Sound

Written By Jake, Charlottesville, VA on Sunday, October 02, 2011

I have had the subwoofers about a year now. I wanted to wait to see the durabiltity of them. They have not changed since the day i got them! They hit so hard and super clear. I have them hooked up with an 1800 watt Kenwood Amp, (a little more than the subs can hold) but it's a great match. Dynamat is highly reccomended for these subs lol. People def. hear me before they see me and i have had many compliments on how nice, deep, and clear they sound. KICKER ALL THE WAY! Great subs, worth the money, and I am one happy customer.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me start out this review by saying that this is FREAKIN AWESOME! I've only had it for a few days, and for not being broken in yet, they kick so hard! It shakes my whole car, and even shook the entire shed that we installed it in! Match this up with a maybe a Kicker 750 amp and you will be golden! If you were on the fence about this item, dont be! It's fricken awesome!!! All my friends, guys and girls, are all super impress. GET THIS! The only downside is the size, and the break in period of about 2 weeks. IT is HUGE but it KICKS!

So I had purchased the next down lower end model of these subs first and I didnt
think it was loud enough I mean dont get me wrong they hit! but i needed more
lol so I returned them and picked these babies up.................. as soon as they
first hit I could hear that extra hundred dollars cha chinging out of the speaker but
it was actually low crisp clear bass. Def worth the extra hundred as they hold x2
the wattage. My neighbors do not know whats about to hit them haha. But on the
real tip i'm in the hole 400 bucks but it was totally worth it.

Just received them today and for not being broken in, WOW they kick! Can't
wait til they are broken in!

Written By james, Mount Vernon, WA on Tuesday, April 07, 2009

It's crazy how much of a difference you hear after the break in period. I had to set the gain, bass boost and xover on my amp about 4 different times but when i finally got it sounding good all i can say is wow! The roof of my gmc jimmy looks like its about to pop off when these things slam. gets very low and stays there. With the port tuning you don't get alot of frequencys you get with other ported and vented enclosures(like alot of the bass on T.Is Top Back) but what you do get it some raw bass! go get you some of these! def worth it

Great Subs!

Written By Zach, Lewisburg, OH on Wednesday, March 25, 2009

A great pair of subwoofers, I have them hooked up to a 750.1 Amp and those things Slap! They are so popular they went Out of stock when I ordered them And at first i was upset, but when i got them and hooked them up, It paid off within the day.

Only Disadvantage I'd have to say is that there pretty big, but if you have a fairly big trunk, no worries!

Overall Fantastic Subs.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I previously had 2 of these same sub in a sealed box before they were stolen(don't put the decals on the window unless you have a garage to hide your car in). The port on this box just makes it sound better and feel better. Since I got this new setup my airbag waring light comes on all the time if that tells you how hard these hit.

After frying the coil in my 12" L7 I wanted something a little cheaper for now. I bought these in the 2 ohm version and paired them with a Kicker ZX750.1 mono amp. All I can say is WOW!!!! granted I did not have my L7 in a large ported box, but I would prefer this package over one L7. They are no where near as muddy sounding and in fact on rock songs they still have a tight punch for a ported enclosure. Needless to say on any Hip Hop or Rap song they will go VERY LOW!!!!! I am more than pleased and will not be switching back anytime soon. VERY IMPRESSIVE for the money, and would highly recommend.

Kicker 07DCVR122 Works Hard For The Money

Written By Larry, Salem, IN on Saturday, August 16, 2008

I'm 56 years old and unlike many my age, I never grew out of listening to hard rock and having a good sound system in my vehicle. I've been a fan of Kicker products for several years and have just purchased the Kicker 07DCVR122. I'm not going to try to give you facts and figures about this unit to try to impress you. It simple blows you away and when you figure the (BANG For Your BUCK) that Crutchfields offers, this is a bargain in anybodys book. The bottom end on this set of speakers will give you a blow your mind, head banging effect or if you want it will produce the finest high quality sound to make any type of music a pleasure to listen too.

When I made the investment of bass in my car I knew I wanted to go big. It just so happens I got exactly what I wanted.

This enclosure is the best boom for your buck. The box is solid and lets these things go so low. When you put your hand up to the port it is like a powerful gust of air. Even before I bought an Alpine amp and I only had around 200 watts going to these things they still sounded amazing. You can hear them from down the block and when my car is outside my house, things shake inside. I have the 4 Ohm version and I could only imagine how much louder the 2 could go. I highly recommend this enclosure to anyone who wants amazing sound but doesn't feel like building a box.

Written By Richard, Snyder Texas on Tuesday, July 08, 2008

These subs pound, I have the zx750.1 amp to push them. Just installed them and cant believe the sound. I have the gain, bass boost and the crossover turned up to half. Cant wait untill they are broke in so I can crank it up. The best subs you can buy and crutchfield even gives you a break on the zx750.1 what a deal! Thanks to kicker for making a great product and thaks to crutchfield for the great pricing.

Unnecessarily Loud

Written By Behzad, Grafton, Massachussetts on Saturday, July 05, 2008

I put this box in My
Jeep Grand Cherokee
and it is the best
investment I have
put in this car. The
Subs put out so much
bass, and with the
port box there is no
comparison. This is
the loudest bass
system you can get.
I only have one
complaint with it
though. It is big.
Haha. I have enough
room in the back of
my jeep for me to
sit before I hit the
bass box. But it
makes it up with the
beautiful bass sound

Written By Mike, Richmond,VA on Saturday, March 22, 2008

I have this box in my '04 Dodge Intrepid. A little too much bass for a car. I
have it hooked to the Kicker zx750.1 amp. Perfect match. The bass
is loud and deep. I listen to rap, alternative, and hard rock and these subs
bring out the low end in them all. Unlike cheaper subs these acutally have a
different sound for each of these rather than just boom bam boom. The
bass is smooth and competition sounding. Now it is a little "boomier" than
tight bass but they are 12's and in a ported box. Its what you're going to
get with any subs like these. Dynamat is a must! Why I gave 4 stars
instead of
5? 1.The box is pretty large. If you have mid size car or smaller dont
expect to have much trunk space at all. 2.The box packs some weight.
Roughly 70 pounds. And 3.The break in period. You are supposed to play it
moderately for about 2 weeks to loosen up the speaker basket, too bad
because you wanna set off alarms and break your windows now:-). Lol.
Maybe not the window part. By not doing so for that time period you'll put a
strain on the subs and damage them including blowing them all together.
Other than that great subs and a must have in an audio set up. Oh and in
case you are wondering NO assembly required. It comes all put together
and wired. Just connect amp and go.

These subs beat down

Written By Phillip, Georgia on Wednesday, November 14, 2007

I put these subs in my 2002 Ranger super cab with the Kicker ZX1500.1 Class D amp and they hit soooo hard with no distortion at all.....these subs are so amazingly loud that they shattered my back glass (and my friends ear drums) but my only complaint is the box is HUGE! so dont plan on having too many passengers.

Written By Max, phoenix, az on Monday, November 12, 2007

These subs are amazing! I just purchased the 4-ohm version and they producing more than enough bass!!! your entire car will shake with a low note and you will definitely be heard from blocks away. they haven't even broken in yet and i can only turn it up half way without my brain rattling. BUY these subs!

Kicker 07DCVR122

Written By ray, Long Island on Friday, September 14, 2007

These subs definitely need to be broken in gently, with around 600watts I managed to fry a coil on one sub within the first week. Luckily I noticed something was off and tested the coils, finding one blown. When it was replaced and broken in, these make a ton of volume, but there is no power behind it, they don't hit or punch so much as make loads of deep loud bass. They distort around 800-900 watts, which was kind of disappointing, but for the money they are easily some of the loudest subs available.

Written By 426hemi, Pittsburgh, PA on Sunday, May 13, 2007

I have these in a hatchback and powered with a Profile California 350rms @ 2 ohms amp. These subs pound hard and are very loud. Never get any distortion even with rap/hip-hop music though I mostly listen to metal. You can feel the bass pounding in your chest and your seat!

Kicker is #1

I've got these two subs in the same ported box made by kicker in my Sentra and it just pounds!! I hooked it up to kickers 750.1 mono amp, I would highly recommend this package, you won't regret it. If you want to blow your friends or whoever away with your system, these are definately the way to go, and it looks awesome. I highly recommend this product

Cone Materials: The cone was developed using Kicker's SoloKon technology. The ultra high performance injection molded polypropylene cone remains rigid and minimizes cone flex, lowering harmonic distortion. Distortion in the cone is further reduced with new back bracing.

Surround: The optimized ribbed Santoprene surround allows extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL. The surround is double-stitched to the cone to add a mechanical fastener to the chemical adhesives. This prevents the cone and surround from separating in the harshest conditions.

Enhanced BAM (Basket And Motor) Assembly: The high-strength steel basket features a low-profile open design, and provides a solid foundation for the precision-aligned motor assembly. Perimeter venting in the BAM relieves pressure from under the spider, supports a linear excursion, and helps dissipate heat from the voice coil and motor structure.

UniPlate Construction: The woofer features a one-piece UniPlate construction with a vented hyper-extended pole piece and backplate. This unique design provides the following benefits:

  • Optimizes heat transfer efficiency for cooler operation and maximum power handling ability
  • Eliminates erratic magnetic flux from the voice coil gap
  • Releases pressure under the suspension for uniform cone movement and responsive low bass
  • Prevents the voice coil from bottoming out and corresponding damage

Tinsel Leads: The woofer features sleeved high-power tinsel lead wires to resist breakage and power-robbing resistance losses. The lead wires are terminated with polymer-based strain relieving mechanical fasteners.

Impedance: The two woofers are internally wired to present a 2 ohm load at the wire terminals.

Break-in Period: Due to the complex nature of Kicker Comp VR speakers, they require a break-in period in order to produce optimum low-bass response. The high-performance suspension system makes the speaker very stiff out-of-the-box. Approximately 2 weeks of daily playing will allow the suspension to break-in and reach its optimum equilibrium. A broken-in subwoofer will exhibit stronger bass performance, smoother response, and greater low-bass extension.

Subsonic Filter: The power handling specification listed for this enclosure was calculated using a 25Hz, 24dB/octave subsonic filter (sold separately). If a subsonic filter is not used, power handling may decrease, excessive port noise can occur, and the life of the woofer may be shortened

Human Fine-Tuned: Computer modeling and human fine-tuning allow Kicker CompVR subwoofer enclosures to offer perfectly matched bass performance.

Port Clearance: At some frequencies most of the bass is output from the vent so it needs at least four inches clearance to ensure adequate air flow.

Speaker Terminals: The spring loaded, nickel-plated terminals provide solid connections for speaker wire up to 8 gauge. Single banana plugs and pin connectors will also fit. The terminals are on the left side of the enclosure, beside the port.
